Sex-ban on US troops not working, 15 female soldiers get pregnant in Afghanistan

London, May 16 (ANI): The American Army’s ban on sex hardly seems to be working with over fifteen pregnant women soldiers being sent home from Afghanistan.

The army had launched a vigourous campaign to counter rising incidents of pregnancy among women soldiers in Afghanistan, and measures like posters urging use of contraception have been put up in the medical centre and free condoms are being supplied in army camouflage tins.

But it has clearly met with little success.

“There have been so many pregnancies and the Army is starting to worry,” the Daily Express quoted a source, as saying.

Pregnant soldiers cause operational problems because they have to be replaced and seldom return within six months of giving birth, the paper reports. (ANI)

Chinese farmer kills official for forcing wife’s abortion

Beijing, May 11 (IANS) A farmer allegedly killed a family planning official in China’s Jilin province and injured her two minor children, after she forced his wife to undergo an abortion.

The farmer, identified as Zhang Xuezhong, killed Jiang Xiaoling May 1 because he was angry she forced his wife to abort their baby, officials said Monday.

Jiang’s husband, Zhao Guogui, also a farmer in Xinhua village, said Monday the alleged killer rushed to his home with a stick and beat his wife to death. He also beat his son, 15, and daughter, 11, both of whom are now in hospital. The girl is in a comatose state in the intensive care unit, hospital officials said.

Zhang has been arrested.

Zhang was angry as Jiang had reported his wife’s pregnancy was in violation of the country’s family planning rules, Zhao said.

‘He is so ruthless. My wife reported to the superiors that his wife was unlawfully pregnant again,’ Zhao was quoted as saying by Global Times.

Jiang discovered in February 2010 that Zhang’s wife was pregnant and tried to make her undergo an abortion. The couple refused and Jiang reported them to higher officials.

After officials convinced her, Zhang’s wife underwent the operation, Zhao said.

Farmers in the countryside are allowed to have a second child if the first one is a girl or has a disability, according to the family planning policy.

Zhang had earlier served 13 years in prison for attempting to kill his father-in-law.

Eddie Murphy trying to mend relationship with ex Mel B?

New York, May 11 (ANI): Eddie Murphy is making efforts to get to know his daughter with ex-flame Melanie Brown, it has emerged.

“While promoting ”Shrek Forever After,” Eddie talked a lot about his kids,” the New York Daily News quoted a source, as saying.

“Ever since, he”s been making efforts with Mel to get to know their daughter.”

Murphy and Brown have feuded quite publicly since her pregnancy was revealed in 2006, with Murphy initially denying he was the dad.

Even though the actor has been repeatedly accused of wanting nothing to do with his child by the former Scary Spice, it seems he has had a change of heart lately.

The insider revealed Murphy hosted a party at his LA compound last week, and Brown, her hubby, Stephen Belafonte, and Angel, her 3-year-old daughter with Murphy, were present.

The snitch said: “They”ve both said some really nasty things about each other to the press.

“So needless to say, some guests were shocked.”

The informer added: “Eddie”s ex-wife Nicole helped them reconcile their issues, too.

“Angel is Eddie”s youngest child, and Nicole wanted her children to know her. That helped Eddie to come around and get past all the animosity he had toward Mel.

“All of the children were there for the party, and it appeared that they”re one big happy, blended family.” (ANI)

Obama signs executive order on abortion

US president Barack Obama has signed an executive order barring taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions, keeping a pledge he made to help push his health care reform through Congress.

The White House issued a photograph of Mr Obama signing the measure in the Oval Office, surrounded by pro-life Democrats, whose votes were crucial in the 216-212 passage of the historic health bill.

In negotiations before Sunday’s vote in the House, Mr Obama’s executive order won over the holdouts.

Mr Obama’s measure does not alter existing legislation on abortion, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs stressed, adding that the president maintained his support for a woman’s right to choose to terminate her pregnancy.

Mr Gibbs said the executive order “ensures that health care, the law the president signed, maintains the status quo of the federal law prohibiting the use of federal dollars for abortion”.

Infertile men at higher prostate cancer risk

Washington, March 22 (ANI): Infertility increases a man”s risk of prostate cancer, a new research has found.

The study showed that infertile men have an increased risk of developing high-grade prostate cancer, which is more likely to grow and spread quickly.

The study”s results suggest that because infertility may be an identifiable risk factor for prostate cancer, early screening may be warranted in infertile men.

Research focusing on the number of children a man has have pointed to male fertility”s potential associated with risk for prostate cancer.

However, studies on the topic have generated conflicting results: some have found that men with children had a higher risk than childless men; some have found that men with fewer children had a higher risk than men with more children; still others failed to identify any association between the number of children fathered and a man”s risk for prostate cancer.

Because the number of children a man has may not accurately reflect his ability to cause a pregnancy, Thomas Walsh, of the University of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues designed a more accurate study to evaluate the association between male infertility and prostate cancer.

They studied the risk for prostate cancer in a group of 22,562 men evaluated for infertility from 1967 to 1998 in 15 California infertility centers.

The incidence of prostate cancer in these men was compared with the incidence in a sample of men in the general population who were of similar ages and from similar geographic locations.

The researchers identified 168 cases of prostate cancer that developed in men who were evaluated for infertility.

That number not significantly different from the expected rate (185 cases), suggesting that overall, men evaluated for infertility were not at a higher risk of being diagnosed with any type of prostate cancer compared with men in the general population.

However, men who were evaluated and found to be infertile were 2.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with high-grade prostate cancer than men who were evaluated but were found not to be infertile.

The authors say if these results are confirmed in other studies, it may be appropriate for infertile men to be considered for early prostate cancer screening, given their elevated risk for aggressive disease.

They add that the results should stimulate research on possible common biological pathways underlying infertility and prostate cancer.

The study has been published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. (ANI)

Abortion goes live on Twitter

NEW YORK: A woman took to her Twitter page to tell all about the abortion she was going through — step by step.

Angie Jackson, 27, wanted to “demystify” abortion, and so shared it on Twitter, YouTube and her personal blog. “I’m doing this so other women know, ‘Hey, it’s not nearly as terrifying as I had myself worked up thinking it was.’ It’s just not that bad,” the New York Daily News quoted Jackson as saying on her YouTube video.

The whole incident had started on February 13, when she discovered that her IUD, a contraceptive device placed in the uterus, failed. According to ABCNews.com, Jackson, who has a four-year-old son with special needs, decided to terminate the pregnancy.

“I had made a decision when my son was born to try to not get pregnant again, and if that failed I’d planned that I would get an abortion if I needed one,” she revealed. She went to her local Planned Parenthood in Tampa, Florida, to get RU-486, commonly known as the abortion pill.

She started chronicling the experience on Twitter under the username “antitheistangie”.

“Cramps are getting a bit more persistent,” Jackson typed. A few hours later, her status changed to “Definitely bleeding now”.

Jackson’s following has doubled from 800 since she first tweeted the news of her pregnancy, but not everyone is happy with her openness. Not only has she been criticized for being a “whore” who “can’t keep her legs closed”, but Jackson and her family have received threats as well.

“No show in daytime or prime time, or anytime, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years as Guiding Light,” The BBC quoted Barbara as saying.

The show is reportedly set to be replaced by a new edition of game show ‘Let’s Make a Deal’. (ANI)
