Dalai Lama inaugurates Buddha Smriti Park in Patna

Patna, May 27 (IANS) Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama Thursday inaugurated the Buddha Smriti Park, a sprawling 22 acre park dedicated to Lord Buddha in the heart of the city, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

The inauguration of the Buddha memorial park was an international event attended by delegations from four predominantly Buddhist countries — Sri Lanka, Burma, Japan and Thailand.

The Dalai Lama thanked Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for inviting him to inaugurate the memorial park built to commemorate the 2,554 th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha and described his visit to the state as a pleasant one.

The foreign delegations attended the prayer ceremony during the inaugural function. They brought consecrated Buddha urns and gifts, which were kept at the memorial park by the Dalai Lama.

The spiritual leader also planted a sapling of the tree under which Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. A branch of the original Mahabodhi tree is believed to have been taken to Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka by Emperor Ashok’s son Mahendra.

The Sri Lankan delegation had brought a sapling from this tree to be planted at the Buddha Smriti Park.

Bihar Governor D. Konwar and the chief minister, along with his cabinet colleagues and top officials, were present during the ceremony.

The park is located near the Patna railway junction and is spread over 22 acres of prime land located in the heart of the city. The project is estimated to have cost more than Rs.125 crore.

Chinmaya Mission organizes yajna for world peace

Hosur (Tamil Nadu), Apr 13 (ANI): Hundreds of people attended a special yajna (religious fire ritual) ceremony held here for world peace on the last weekend.

Organised by Chinmaya Mission at Hosur in Tamil Nadu, the religious ceremony witnessed an overwhelming participation of people irrespective of their person religious faith.

The yajna was performed along with the recitation of powerful ‘Gayatari Mantra’ for 108 times to promote harmony and seek relief for everyone suffering worldly troubles.

“Today, at Hosur, 108 recitation of Gayatari Omum recitation was organized. Swamiji Krishnaatmananda, Chinmaya mission conducted it for world peace. Children, women and men of different castes, without any discrimination participated in the prayer ceremony. A ceremony like this has held for the first time in Hosur,” said Sunita, a participant during the ceremony.

People appreciated the organization of such a ceremony.

Sri Sri Krishanaatmananda, the Chinmaya Mission head, on this occasion explained the essence of the mantra, saying one who chants the mantra will be protected by it. The real meaning of mantra is to seek knowledge. We pray to the sun god to give us bright intellect, sharp intellect and concentrated intellect and also beautiful knowledge for life. (ANI)

Tibetan exiles participate in special prayer in Dharamsala

Dharamsala, Mar 11 (ANI): Hundreds of Tibetans, including monks, nuns and officials of the Tibetan Government-in-exile, on Wednesday attended an annual special prayer ceremony that marked the 16th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar year here.

On the occasion, the Dalai Lama gave his annual spring speech at the main temple here.

“This is one of the most important prayer ceremonies in our traditions. On this day, we remember Buddha’s teachings, legacies and stuff,” said Thubten Thalgey, a Tibetan lawmaker.

All Tibetans were dressed in traditional colourful costumes.

“Where ever this ceremony takes place, the Dalai Lama teaches the way of living to the Tibetans. We are very fortunate that his Holiness is here and he gives these teachings every year,” Thalgey added.

Thousands of Tibetans, including the Dalai Lama, fled their homeland following an unsuccessful uprising against China in 1959.

About 1,35,000 Tibetan refugees are settled in different parts of India, with the Dalai Lama having his headquarters in Dharamsala. (ANI)

Environment activists in Rajkot mourn felling of trees

Rajkot, Mar 3 (ANI): Environment activists mourned rampant felling of trees by holding a condolence meeting in Rajkot.

The activists owed their allegiance to Rajkot Nature and Adventure Club. They assembled on the premises of a residential complex housing government employees. They held a condolence meeting to mourn the loss of trees in their city.

The activists also held a prayer ceremony and garlanded the cut trees playing devotional songs. They wanted the culprits to be brought to book.

“So many trees have been cut in Rajkot, but the culprits have not been punished so far. The miscreants should be dealt with severely,” said Bharat Bhai Sureja, President, Rajkot Nature and Adventure Club.

According to the activists, around 300 trees have been cut in Rajkot in past one year. (ANI)

Buddhist prayers for world peace concludes in Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya, Jan 12 (ANI): Hundreds of Tibetan Buddhist monks participated in a prayer ceremony for world peace that concluded here on Sunday.

The 17th Karmapa Lama, Ugyen Thrinley Dorje, led the prayer ceremony called ‘Kangu Monlam’ that began on January 4.

He is the only senior monk to be recognised by both Beijing and the Dalai Lama.

“This world peace prayer for eight days conducted under the leadership of Karamapa got over. More than 500 Buddhist monks have gathered here,” said Gempo Cherin, secretary to the Karmapa Lama.

The prayer was conducted under the Bodhi tree, where Lord Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment.

The Tibetan Buddhist monks also offered alms and food to hundreds of poor people on the concluding day of the prayers.

“These monks have gathered here to take part in this traditional ritual of seeking alms. This tradition was started by Lord Buddha himself,” said Gempo Cherin,

Residents and devouts offered ‘Bhiksha’ or alms as a part of the ritual in which monks beg with the purpose of self-effacement or ego-conquering.

Karmapa Lama escaped to India after an arduous 1,400 km journey through the Himalayas in January 2001.

Karmapa Lama, granted refugee status by India in 2005, is now settled in Dharamsala. (ANI)
