Bharatiya Janata Party criticises austerity drive

New Delhi/Patna, Sept 16 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised the austerity measures mooted by the Central Government in view of the economic downturn and drought-like situation prevailing in the country.

Addressing the media persons here on Tuesday, spokesperson of the BJP, Rajeev Pratap Rudy, said the austerity drive would not impress the masses.

He said that the government has not cared to check the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.

“The euphoria of austerity is a suspect. The futile chest beating will not impress a common man who is faced with high prices for food and other essential commodities,” said Rudy.

The BJP was also critical of journeys undertaken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi’s travel by train to Punjab on Tuesday.

“We want the Congress family would undertake a journey on Shatabdi in future also. We welcome it. Sonia Gandhi undertook a journey in economy class and we welcome it. But somewhere this has to be studied as to what is the cost that the country is paying for her austerity,” added Rudy.

Meanwhile in Patna, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the Central Ministers ought to travel by the three-tier sleeper class.

“Journeys should be undertaken in a three-tier bogie of a train, which would lay an impact on the masses that our leaders are following the path of Mahatma Gandhi. They would see that the Congress is taking the austerity drive to meet the financial crisis. This is my advice,” said Lalu. (ANI)

Orissa victim of medical negligence gets monetary relief

New Delhi, Aug. 26 (ANI): The Government of Orissa has complied with the NHRC’s recommendations and paid a monetary relief of five lakh rupees to Mrs. Binapani Khatua of Orissa, a victim of medical negligence due to which she suffered severe pain for four years and now cannot bear children.

The Commission, on the basis of the material evidence provided by the State Government also recorded in its proceeding on August 24, 2009 that the departmental action against the two erring doctors is in the process of being finalized.

The NHRC took up the matter on June 15, 2007 on a complaint filed by B.K. Dash, Director, Collective Initiation for Social Solidarity (CISS) on June 4, 2007.

The complainant had then alleged that Binapani Khatua w/o Pratap Khatua of Radharamur Village under Athagarh Police limit in the District of Cuttack (Orissa) was admitted in Athagarh Hospital on June 15, 2003 in connection with the delivery of her first issue. She had to be operated upon for the safe delivery of her male child. But four days later he died. Post surgery, Mrs Binapani complained of severe pain in her abdomen and consulted several doctors, in government and private hospitals. But without bothering for proper medical investigations to ascertain the real cause of continued pain to the patient, they simply prescribed her some medicines.

Finally, after about four years, she got relief from her ordeal but not without two more surgeries; one leading to a futile exercise of imputing her uterus meaning that she could no more bear children and the other, in effect leading to the remedy by removal of a surgical scissor which an X-ray showed was lodged in her belly . The couple spent a lot of money on the treatment leading them to a stage of bankruptcy. The Complainant prayed for an inquiry in the matter, justice to the victim and action against the surgeon.

On the basis of the enquiry reports provided by the state government during the course of subsequent proceedings in the matter, the Commission found that Mrs. Binapani is a victim carelessness of the doctors who operated upon her for the first time during the course of her first delivery and left a surgical scissor inside her belly. On 18th December, 2008, it recommended that the State Government pay five lakh rupees as monetary relief to the victim. The Commission also called for the status of departmental proceedings drawn up against the two erring doctors in the matter. owever, it was only after sustained efforts of the Commission that finally the state government paid monetary relief to the victim and agreed to draw up disciplinary proceedings against the two Doctors, namely, Dr. Sarojini Sarangi, Professor, OSG and Dr. Kirtirekha Mohapatra, Assistant Professor, OSG, SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack found guilty of medical negligence in an enquiry for alleged lapses. Mumbai, Aug 26 (ANI): A case has been registered against two shop owners after a portion of a four-storey residential building collapsed in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, Yunus Kasam Memon and Irfan Yusuf Memon, who own a shop of mobile handset covers, had allegedly added a staircase without seeking permission from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

This led to collapse of the building ‘Yusuf Manzil’ at Lamington Road, they added.

Uttarakhand villagers marooned for over two years

Chai (Uttarakhand), Aug 21 (ANI): Residents of Chai village in Uttarakhand are still struggling to cope up with the predicament, which they encountered nearly two years ago when water from a tunnel of a powerhouse project gushed into their homes.

It was on October 25, 2007 that a massive leakage in the tunnel of the 400 MW powerhouse project constructed by the Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited, a subsidiary of Jaypee Group of Industries resulted in the entire Chai village being inundated.

Only couple of families out of 25 were compensated.

With no roof over their heads and facing Herculean task to travel to the nearby villages or other places for their work, these families have reached the limit of their patience.

“When the tunnel built by JP Company (Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited) poured out two years ago, our complete village was wiped out. Every day we are living under the fear of losing our lives. All our homes have been destroyed. We face a lot of problems while commuting from one place to another, as there are no roads,” said Yashoda Devi, a villager.

She also complained that many families are living in shacks and tents since the government has not rehabilitated them even after two years.

Despite repeated appeals, the government has rehabilitated just seven to eight families out of the 25 gravely affected households.

So much so, relief if any seems to have become a mirage for these families.

“We took our problem to the Chief Minister and the District Magistrate and every authority concerned, but so far they have provided houses to just seven to eight families. Those families who were severely affected by the leakage were promised a compensation of 365,000 rupees.

But the villagers were not in favour of the compensation but wished to move to some safer place,” said Pratap Lal, former Pradhan (headman) of Chai village.

Reacting to all the plight of the villagers, the government of Uttarakhand has contended that the grievances of the affected villagers are being looked into and that the District Magistrate is being instructed to address the problems of Chai village.

“This problem is now under consideration. We will be referring the matter to the District Magistrate and strict instructions will be issued to him. The problem is very grave in the village ever since the tunnel had leaked. After that commuting has been very dangerous for the villagers.

The District Magistrate will be looking into the matter at the earliest,” asserted Khajan Das, Minister of Disaster Management, Uttarakhand. (ANI)

Activists stage demonstration against irregularities in issuing social security cards

New Delhi, July 15(ANI): Activists of Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) held a demonstration in the national capital, on Wednesday over irregularities in the distribution of Below Poverty Line (BPL) social security cards.

Scores of SUCI activists marched to Delhi state secretariat, raising slogans against the government, alleging that Delhi government is laidback in issuing BPL cards.

“Today our main demand is that people of this (Delhi) region that are living Below Poverty Line (BPL) have not yet received BPL cards. Many people have applied for these cards but so many years have passed and they are yet to receive BPL cards,” said Pratap Samal, State Secretary of SUCI.

“People who have given cards for renewal have not received them back,” Samal added.

Meanwhile, a member of parliament belonging to SUCI alleged that BPL cards are being issued to people living above poverty line, which is a gross misuse of the facility.

“Taking the Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards there are lots of delay dealings, there are lots of corruption and there are nepotism. Those parties who are in power either in the state or the central government they are using these BPL cards for Above Poverty Line (APL).” said a member of parliament of SUCI.

“The real people are not getting the BPL facilities,” the member added.

BPL cardholders are entitled to get subsidised food grains from the government. (ANI)

CPI, SUCI activists protest against fuel price hike

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Activists of Communist party of India and Socialist Unity Centre of India staged demonstrations against the increase in prices of petrol and diesel here on Friday.

Shouting slogans against the ruling Congress party, protesters demanded the government to roll back the hike.

“The prices of essential commodities like vegetable, pulses, sugar, rice will increase due to hike in petrol and diesel prices as transportation will become expensive. This is a slap on the face of public who voted for Congress. We strongly condemn the fuel prices hike and ask the government to roll back the hike,” said Amarjeet Kaur, CPI’s state secretary.

The hike will aid margins for state-owned refiners forced to sell at government-set prices, and may be only a prelude to greater free-market price reforms in next week’s budget.

Activists of SUCI said that the fuel prices hike will increase the inflation rate.

“It is ironical that fuel prices have been hiked at a time when the government is announcing100 day agendas for the country. On one side the government is all set to come-up with packages to help capitalists overcome economic crisis and on the other hand it is increasing the inflation rate for the commoners,” said Pratap Samal, SUCI’s state secretary.

Fuel prices were last raised in June 2008, but they were cut in December and again in January as oil prices tumbled.

The crude oil prices have more than doubled since a February low, with second-quarter gains the highest since 1990.

Despite price increase, oil firms were likely to suffer a revenue loss of 560 billion rupees on sale of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene this fiscal. (ANI)

At least two injured during an anti-encroachment drive in Uttar Pradesh

Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh), June 28(ANI): At least two people were injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district, on Sunday, as an anti-encroachment drive in a slum locality in the area went haywire.

Locals alleged that the Ghaziabad Development Authority officials had arrived there to demolish their houses without any prior notice to them and the police were alleged to have baton-charged residents of the slums.

“The policemen beat us up. We were baton-charged by the police. Two to three women have received injuries on their heads,” said Ram Pratap, a slum dweller.

Meanwhile, the police contended that the policemen were forced to baton-charge as the people started pelting stones on them.

They also mentioned that the slum dwellers themselves set their huts on fire.

Consequently, a number of policemen have been deputed in the locality to control the situation. (ANI)

Fire destroys goods worth millions in Gwalior

Gwalior, May 18 (ANI): Goods worth millions of rupees were destroyed as massive fire burnt down a godown of power transformers, on the outskirts of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.

In the middle of the night, the godown caught fire and the blazes became quite fierce.

According to the fire brigade officials, the inferno spread due to lack of safety and preventive setups in the godown.

As the fire spreads, students from the nearby hostel of the Maharana Pratap College of Technology became panicky and vacated their hostel rooms along with their belongings.

They blamed the fire officials for being late in reaching the spot.

However, the officials of the fire brigade denied the accusations.

“The accusation on us regarding our late arrival is absolutely incorrect. Our fire brigade arrived and then unlocked the doors towards the godown. No one from the power transmission department informed us. They didn’t even have any safety arrangements. They have such a huge godown; security arrangements should have been there. When we arrived, we woke up the watchman and then opened the doors to control the fire,” said Devendra Sharma, officer of the Gwalior fire brigade.

Scores of fire tenders from the Air Force base at Maharajpur, the Border Security Force, and Municipal Corporation were rushed to the spot to control the fire.

Once the fire is completely extinguished, further investigations into the incident will ascertain the exact cause and overall losses and other damages. (ANI)

Angry Lalu may opt to skip cabinet meet

New Delhi, May 8 (ANI): An angry Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav is expected to skip today’s cabinet meeting in the capital in the wake of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi suggesting a possible political arrangement with Lalu’s rival in Bihar — Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The otherwise media-friendly and gregarious Lalu shunned the media on Thursday even as polling was held for three Bihar Lok Sabha seats, including Pataliputra, which he is contesting.

A sombre-looking Lalu turned up alongside wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi, son Tej Pratap and a daughter at the polling station on the Veterinary College campus where scores from the media were waiting for him since early morning.

Lalu pushed aside some reporters and cameramen of tv news channels.

A cameraman, who had managed to sneak into the room where the electronic voting machine was placed, was given a dressing-down by an angry RJD supremo. The man rushed out sheepishly. (ANI)

Sonia files nomination, Rae Bareli promises thumping win

Rae Bareli, April 6 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi Monday filed her nomination papers to contest the Lok Sabha election from this Gandhi family bastion in Uttar Pradesh, with roaring crowds promising to elect her by record margins.

People went delirious as the Congress president drove through the thickly populated parts of Rae Bareli town. Cries of ‘Sonia Gandhi, Zindabad’ and ‘Rajiv Gandhi Amar Rahen’ rent the air, as her small motorcade drove past the streets. Many showered rose petals on the cars.

The mass of Congress supporters vowed to send her back to the Lok Sabha by improving her victory margin of 417,000 votes of 2004.

‘Our endeavour is to see her creating yet another record by increasing her victory margin,’ said 70-year-old Shiv Pratap Misra, who has been wedded to the Congress and the Gandhi family since 1967 when Indira Gandhi, Sonia’s mother-in-law and prime minister for 16 long years, first entered the electoral fray from here.

Rae Bareli will go the polls April 30 in the third phase of India’s staggered elections. This is the third time Sonia Gandhi is contesting from Rae Bareli.

The only time Indira Gandhi lost this seat was in 1977, when the Janata Party crushed the Congress nationally, but she staged a dramatic comeback three years ago.

In 2004, all 15 opponents of Sonia Gandhi lost their security deposit. Her closest rival, Raj Kumar Chaudhary of the Samajwadi Party, polled only 57,600 votes while Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Vinay Katiyar secured a paltry 6,200 votes. Although the overall polling was only 42 percent, as many as 72 percent of the votes went to her kitty.

Posters on the walls of Rae Bareli reminded people about the constituency’s old links with the Gandhi family.

Read one: ‘Rishta bahut purana hai, Bahu ko bhari maton se jitana hai’ (Rae Bareli’s relationship is very old, we have to ensure a record win for the daughter-in-law.)

Adhering to the norms laid down by the Election Commission, Sonia Gandhi, dressed in a beige saree with a red and green print, and her son Rahul got off their vehicle outside the gates of the collectorate. Guarded by the Special Protection Group, they walked 100 metres to reach the returning officer’s chamber.

Four sets of nomination papers were filed by her. District Congress committee chief Uma Shankar Misra and party legislators Raja Ram Tyagi, Ashok Singh and Shiv Ganesh Lodhi were the proposers.

Walking down the roads in Rae Bareli or driving along its rural spread, the support for Sonia Gandhi was overwhelming and cut across economic, caste and religious divides.

Anyone who was asked had a common reply: ‘We are for Sonia Gandhi.’ Asked why, they would respond: ‘She has given us everything here.’

Many in Rae Bareli are not even aware who are Sonia Gandhi’s rivals.

The handicap of finding locals to oppose the Congress chief has probably led both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to import candidates from other districts.

While BJP president Raj Nath Singh handpicked Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activist Rakesh Bahadur Singh for the job, BSP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has named R.S. Kushwaha of Allahabad to take on the ‘bahu’ (daughter-in-law) of the Gandhi family.

Both before and after filing the nomination papers, Sonia Gandhi kept the family traditions going.

While a ‘havan’ at the local Congress office preceded the nomination, she drove down to Taklia village to pray at the tomb of scholar Maulana Ali Mian, who once headed the Lucknow-based Islamic University Nadwa-tul Ulema Darul-Uloom.

According to an affidavit filed along with the nomination papers, Sonia Gandhi owns neither a house or a car in India but she has an ancestral family home in Italy, the country of her birth.

Sonia Gandhi’s assets, according to the affidavit, totalled Rs.13.8 million (Rs.1.38 crore), nearly Rs.10 million less than what her son Rahul Gandhi reportedly has.

She has Rs.75,000 in cash and Rs.2.86 million (Rs.28.61 lakh) in bank deposits. She also owns mutual funds worth about Rs.2 million (Rs.20 lakh) and Rs.1.2 million (Rs.12 lakh) in government bonds.

A sum of Rs.199,000 was deposited in post offices and Rs.2.49 million (Rs.24.88 lakh) with the Public Provident Fund.

Sonia Gandhi’s jewellery, weighing about 2.5 kg, was valued at Rs.1.1 million (Rs.11 lakh) while 88 kg of silver possessed by her was stated to be worth about Rs.1.8 million (Rs.18 lakh).

She owns two plots of farm land totalling up to about 15 bighas and valued at Rs.219,000. Their location is not mentioned in the affidavit.

Before flying off to New Delhi from Lucknow, she stopped near Mohanlalganj to give a brief pep talk to party workers for about 15 minutes.

Protests continue against Tytler, Sajjan

NEW DELHI: The protests against the candidature of Congress party’s Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler for the Lok Sabha polls in view of the 1984
riots case are now becoming an everyday affair. The Delhi state unit of the Akali Dal on Saturday stepped up its agitation by burning effigies of the two candidates, who are also sitting MPs. The demonstrations were staged in Najafgarh and Maharana Pratap Bagh.

Protests against the two candidates have been mounting over the last few days and the Akali Dal state unit is very clear that it will continue to protest against the Congress party’s stand on selecting Kumar and Tytler. While Kumar, sitting MP from outer Delhi, is the party choice from South Delhi, Jagdish Tytler, who is the MP from Sadar Bazar, has been fielded from North East Delhi. Post-delimitation, the contours of their present constituencies have changed and stand merged with the new constituencies.

Delhi Akali Dal, along with other Sikh organizations, had earlier protested against the Congress party’s choice as far as Tytler and Kumar go outside UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s residence at 10 Janpath. They had also protested outside the Karkardooma courts on the date of hearing of the riot’s case recently.

On Saturday, Akali Dal organized a demonstration in Najafgarh that comes under South Delhi, from where Kumar is contesting, and near the Nanak Piau Gurudwara in Maharana Pratap Bagh in North East Delhi, which is Tytler’s battleground.

Akali Dal state president Manjeet Singh GK said they had burnt effigies of the two candidates to register their protest against the Congress’ decision and asserted that more protests would follow in the coming days.

Upcoming general elections affect inflow of tourists to Uttar Pradesh

Varanasi, Apr 2(ANI): The upcoming general elections have taken a toll on the tourism sector in Varanasi as tourists chose to stay away owing to security problems and other operating difficulties.

The river banks and the hotels which used to be buzzing with tourists at this time of year are now lying vacant.

The tourist operators and guides are all citing the hassles encountered during the elections as chief reason for the lack of tourists in the city.

“Due to elections, there are certain restrictions on the movement of the tourists. They cannot go everywhere and the tourists feel scared and confused in such a scenario. They don’t feel at ease and prefer to go to other locations,” said Neel Pratap, a tourist guide.

Despite majority of the tourists aborting their tours, there are few who have trickled into Varanasi.

These are economy tourists who have been forced to undertake the trip as rules and regulations of certain airlines and hotels prevent them from getting a refund on canceling their tours.

“The tourists who have come here are the people who had made their bookings in advance due to the certain policies and rules of the airlines. Hotels cannot get a refund on cancellation of their reservations.

In such a case, these people are forced to undertake their tours. They are all economy tourists who have come here at their own risk, but so far no untoward incident has been reported, so we are quite hopeful,” said Ronald Nadar, a travel assistant.

After the Mumbai terror attacks and the global recession, the general elections have emerged as new hurdle in the once booming tourism industry in the city.

Varanasi is a hot spot for foreigners visiting India. With its scenic riverbanks and plenty of religious sites, the holy town is quite popular with the tourists. Tourism is one of the major sources of revenue in the city. By Girish Kumar Dubey ANI)

Snakes believed to be reincarnation of humans

Gaya, Mar 26 (ANI): A woman conducted religious rites for the salvation of her sons’ souls in the presence of two snakes at Gaya in Bihar.

This was after she dreamt that her departed sons were reborn in her neighbours’ house as snakes!

Devaki and her neighbour Suresh Singh offered ‘Pindadaan’ for a male and female snake on the banks of River Falgu in Gaya.

“These snakes used to live in somebody else’s house. I brought them here and freed them after performing the rituals,” said Devaki.

Devaki said that a few months ago, a pair of snakes entered the house of Suresh Singh and refused to leave, which prompted them to finally offer ‘Pindadaan’.

The priest who conducted the rituals said that hundreds of people gathered to witness the event after news spread that ‘Pindadaan’ was being performed for the pair of snakes.

After offering the ‘Pindadaan’, Devaki and Suresh Singh freed the two snakes at a nearby place named Sita Kund.

Demand for honey leaf picks up due to its anti diabetes properties

Varanasi, Mar 18 (ANI): Stevia or honey leaf, known for its antidote properties against diabetes, is becoming popular as a cure for the disease in Varanasi.

Also known by the names of sweet leaf or sugar leaf, these leaves provide cure in many health disorders.

“Diabetic patients can use these leaves as an alternate for sugar. These sweet leaves provide the taste of sugar without increasing the sugar or glucose level in the body. Besides this, these leaves are also good for heart patients as it smooth the cardiovascular function,” said Amit Yadav, an Ayurvedic practitioner.

He also added that since Stevia contains fewer concentrations of carbohydrate and calories, they are also helpful in obesity and high blood pressure.

Diabetic patients said Stevia helped them in controlling their blood sugar level.

“I have tried many medicines for treating diabetics, but I was unable to control my blood sugar level. Someone told me about this Stevia leaf and I started consuming the boiled extract of these leaves. This not only controlled my blood sugar level but also provide relief to my body,” said Yogendra Pratap Singh, a diabetic patient.

According to reports, India has around 37 million diabetic patients out of the total 150 million in the world and it is growing rapidly. If nothing is done to reverse the trend, then India would become the diabetic capital of the world by 2025 with estimated 70 million diabetic patients.

As the graph of diabetic patients is increasing, farmers prefer cultivating Stevia to traditional crops.

“The percentage of diabetic patients is increasing day-by-day. Stevia leaf is helpful in controlling blood sugar level and obesity as well. So there is a huge demand for this. We foresee a bright future in Stevia cultivation. That is why we prefer Stevia to other crops,” said Mahendra Pratap Singh, a cultivator of Stevia plants.

Diabetes sets in when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Sugar then cannot be properly stored or used and it builds up in the bloodstream, resulting in diabetes. By Girish Kumar Dubey (ANI)
