Wal-Mart to roll out electronic tags to track clothing – WSJ

(Reuters) – Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) plans to roll out electronic tags to keep track of individual garments like jeans and underwear, in a move that would help the retail giant control its inventories better, the Wall Street Journal said.

Beginning in August, Wal-Mart will place removable radio-frequency ID tags on individual garments that can be read by a handheld scanner, the Journal said.

The tags will help Wal-Mart workers to quickly learn which garments are missing from the shelves, the paper said.

The aim of rolling out the electronic tags is to ensure shelves are optimally stocked and inventory tightly watched, according to the Journal.

If successful, the electronic tags will be used for other products at Wal-Mart’s more than 3,750 U.S. stores, the paper said.

“This ability to wave the wand and have a sense of all the products that are on the floor or in the back room in seconds is something that we feel can really transform our business,” Raul Vazquez, the executive in charge of Wal-Mart stores in the western United States, told the paper.

AIG CEO and Chairman at odds over failed AIA deal: report

AIG is weighing its options for its Asian life insurance unit after a $35.5 billion deal to sell the business to Prudential fell apart.

Benmosche had supported Prudential PLC (PRU.L) deal and argued for accepting a reduction of about $5 billion to help the British company win support from its shareholders, the people told the paper.

However, AIG’s board led by Golub rejected the idea by an overwhelming margin, forcing AIG to go back to its original plan for a public listing of AIA, the FT said.

The divestment of AIA, which could include an IPO, is seen as a key step in AIG’s efforts to repay the government for its $182.3 billion bailout.

The rift between AIG’s two top executives has triggered concerns within the board and among officials in the U.S. government, who fear one of the two men might leave less than a year after their appointment, the paper said.

However, the relationship between Benmosche and Golub has not yet completely broken down, the people told the paper.

AIG could not immediately be reached by Reuters for comment outside regular U.S. business hours.

Caterpillar: Australia mining tax could hurt sales – report

(Reuters) – Australia’s proposed 40 percent mining tax could hurt Caterpillar Inc’s (CAT.N) sales in the country, a spokeswoman for the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment told Bloomberg.

Stocks | Global Markets | Industrials

“Along with our dealers and customers in the region, we are concerned about the potential impact the proposed change in tax policy will have on the manufacturing of mining equipment and our sales in Australia,” Kate Kenny told the agency in an emailed response.

Caterpillar’s distributor in Australia is Seven Network (SEV.AX), a television-to-earthmoving equipment conglomerate.

The company has not faced any order cancellations or delays, Kenny told the agency.

Caterpillar opposes any significant tax increases that will impact the viability of future mining investment in Australia and threatens the company’s long term competitiveness, Kenny said.

Over $20 billion in new resource investment in Australia has been put on hold by global miners strongly opposing the tax.

RJD MP delays President Patil’s flight in China

Beijing/Luoyang, May 29 (IANS) President Pratibha Patil’s flight from Beijing to Luoyang was delayed by 20 minutes Saturday as Lok Sabha MP Raghuvansh Prasad Singh arrived late to board the special Chinese aircraft.

Singh, who is from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party of Lalu Yadav, however, blamed mismanagement for the delay, saying he had not been informed about the boarding time.

President Patil was to take the flight at 9 a.m. but was delayed by 20 minutes.

‘There was confusion and mismanagement. That is why I got delayed and couldn’t be a part of the cavalcade that was taking the president to the Beijing airport,’ Prasad said.

‘I was not informed about what time I had to board the plane and I couldn’t handle the electronic key to the lift and the room,’ the former rural development minister said.

Since the special Chinese flight could not take off on time, other flights at the busy Beijing airport also got delayed, officials said.

Patil is on a six-day visit to China. The visit ends May 31.

In Luyoang, President Patil dedicated an Indian-style Buddhist temple, inspired by the Sanchi Stupa, to the Chinese people.

Busy with Bengal politics, her ministry off Mamata’s track

Days after the BJP hit out at railway minister Mamata Banerjee for her prolonged absence in New Delhi, the Trinamul Congress leader on Friday faced sharp criticism again from her former allies and the Left Front after the Jnaneshwari superfast express derailed near Jhargram. The critics say she had put rail safety on hold for Bengal politics.

As 81 municipalities of the state are going for civic polls, Banerjee had been busy throughout the month attending more than a hundred rallies in different parts of the state. Banerjee was present in New Delhi only for one day this month to attend the anniversary of the UPA-II. “We have been receiving requests for holding a rally from supporters from every district. Local leaders have been pressing her to attend the rallies ” said a TMC leader.

Sudip Bandyopadhyay, the leader of party in Parliament, declined to comment on the issue. “I have not spoken to Mamata Banerjee on the issue, so I will not comment on it,” he said. Union minister of state for shipping Mukul Roy also avoided phone calls. There have been three more attacks by the Maoists in just one month. While two of them were in West Midnapore, one was in Bihar.

Banerjee said a patrol engine had passed through the area half-an-hour earlier, but that the blast timing was disastrous and blew off a portion of the track. BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad demanded that Banerjee devote ‘full attention’ to her ministry.

Caste census: After Cong, dissent brews within BJP

New Delhi, May 28 — Signs of dissent are brewing within the BJP against the party’s official line in support of caste census. On Friday, senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi denounced the idea as divisive. This happened even as party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad refused a direct comment on Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken’s call to young MPs to oppose caste census, instead asking the government to clarify its position on the issue. “It is wrong; it should not happen,” Joshi told HT. “It will further divide society and divert attention from issues like internal security, terrorism and poverty. A national debate is required on the caste census, but in my opinion it is not good for the country.” Days back, RSS had also spoken against the caste census. Leaders such as Sushma Swaraj, Gopinath Munde and M. Venkaiah Naidu have said that numbers with regard to OBCs will help the government plan welfare measures for them.

Joshi said the party chief had not yet supported a caste census, and the BJP brass should get together to formulate the party’s position on the matter. There were reports that Gadkari had opposed a caste census, but he denied these reports.
