BJP, Congress seek time for government formation in Jharkhand

Ranchi, May 31 (IANS) Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farook Monday summoned leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to discuss the formation of an alternative government in the state, a day after Shibu Soren quit as chief minister.

‘The governor called us Monday to know our party’s stand on the formation of an alternative government in the state. We have sought time as the issue will be decided by the central leaders,’ state BJP president Raghubar Das told IANS.

A Congress delegation met Farook immediately after the BJP meeting with the governor.

‘We are not in a hurry to form a government. We will form an alterative government only after ensuring the stability factor,’ state Congress president Pradeep Balmuchu told reporters.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) president Babulal Marandi also met the governor.

Soren, who heads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), met the governor and submitted his resignation Sunday evening, a day before he was to prove his majority in the 81-member state assembly. Sources said that eight of the JMM’s 18 legislators refused to face the trust vote Monday.

The JMM-led five-month-old government was propped up by the BJP with 18 members, the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) with five legislators and the Janata Dal-United’s two members.

The Congress has 14 members, the JVM-P 11, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal five legislators. There also are five independents.

The JMM-led government was reduced to minority after the party’s ally, BJP, finally withdrew support May 24.

After its talks with the BJP collapsed on the issue of sharing power by rotation of 28 months each, the JMM had been in talks with both the Congress and the JVM-P to form an alternative government and avoid President’s Rule in the state.

But with the Congress and its ally JVM-P failing to commit support to the JMM, Soren found no option but to resign.

Jharkhand was plunged into political uncertainty after Soren voted against the BJP’s cut motions on the federal budgetary cuts in Lok Sabha last month.

Early goal by Lebanese striker mellows India in Nehru Cup starter

New Delhi, Aug 20 (ANI): The fifth minute goal by Lebaneon made it tough for India to bounce back into Nehru Cup starter, Indian football coach Bob Houghton after losing 0-1 to Lebanon said on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters here after losing 0-1 to Lebanon, Houghton said, “It was overall quite a good performance. The first goal early on was a massive set back. It took us a while for us to actually get over that. But I thought the last 20 minutes of the first half and in the second half we were quite dominant. But you know it was always going to be difficult to score goals on the outfield out there.”

Lebanon defender Ali Al Saad fired in a low, curling free kick from 22 yards following a foul by N.P. Pradeep in the fourth minute as Lebanon started at a furious pace to rattle defending champions India.

The hosts went close a few times on either half but Lebanon, clearly the better side, tightened their defence and used quick counter-attacks to keep the hosts from mounting sustained pressure.

The Lebanese coach Emile Rustom said that the uneven surface and coarse grass made it tough for them to play to their potential.

“It will be very hard to play on this ground. The grass should have been cut before this game. We suffered a lot because of the temperature and our opponents also,” said Rustom.

India hopes to come up with a far more clinical performance in their next three games.

Kyrgyzstan face Syria in the next game of the round robin competition on Thursday.

Syria, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka and India feature in the August 19 to 31 tournament, being organised mainly to prepare the hosts for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar. (ANI)

Handicraft industry in Rajasthan explores domestic market to beat recession

Jaipur, Aug 20 (ANI): Battered by the economic slowdown, handicraft exporters in Rajasthan now look to the domestic market to survive through the crisis.

The Indian domestic market remained largely unaffected by the global meltdown as compared with the rest of the world.

To tap the domestic market, the Federation of Rajasthan Handicraft Exporters (FRHE) for the first time organised a three-day handicraft fair in Birla Auditorium of Jaipur to provide a platform to sellers and buyers of handicraft.

Sunday is the last day of the expo in which about 100 exhibitors have showcased their world-class quality items, including blue pottery, ceramics, clay items, traditional furnishing items, textiles, jewellery, furniture artifacts.

All such items, which till now used to be destined overseas are being offered in the local market to whole sellers, retailers and even individual buyers.

Local market has been never been so attractive for these sellers.

“When we were earlier exporting, we did not pay any attention to the Jaipur or local market. This time because of the economic slowdown, we are attracted to domestic market and exploring it. We think if we tap the domestic market, our handicraft will survive and it will grow,” said Pradeep Kumar Chabra, an exporter.

Dilip Vaid, Chairman, FRHE, visualises the domestic market to grow big in the next five years and many exporters will shift focus to domestic market from the international market.

“I will not be surprised when many exporters who call themselves as exporters will be focusing on domestic markets rather than international market. The best thing about our industry even in this difficult time is that every piece sold here has got a background of livelihood generated,” said Vaid.

India has about 10.5 million artisans who solely rely on the handicraft industry for their livelihood. They carry with them the traditional know-how of making artifacts passed down from one generation to the other.

These artifacts which reflect Indian culture and tradition are quite often adapted to meet the requirements of changing lifestyle of people without losing their characteristics.

“We are in a period where people need things which are utilitarian. People need objects, which are lifestyle products. People also want products, which are part of our social culture. Still in India the wedding, the home, the community and festival and we need objects for each period of this time. And the handicraft sector can answer this need which is there,” said Sangeeta Shroff, Director, Indian Institute of Crafts and Designs.

This year, the handicraft Industry in Rajasthan exported items worth Rs200 billion rupees handicraft and textile Rs150 billion less compared with the last fiscal year.

Exporters now feel that the Indian market has a great potential and if explored properly they can sail through the economic meltdown and maintain their profits. By Lokendra Singh (ANI)

Standard Chartered Marathon charity function fetches rupees 77.5 million

Mumbai, May 15 (ANI): Bollywood actor John Abraham attended the Standard Chartered post Mumbai Marathon charity function and announced the charity raised in the year 2009.

John who also happens to be the brand ambassador of Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon also felicitated the winners of ‘Best Published Photograph’ competition.

The event was also graced by presence of Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir.

Held in January 2009, barely a month after some armed gunmen stormed Mumbai, the charity amount raised through Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon is said to be a whopping amount of Rs 7.75 crores.

All the individuals and organisations who worked selflessly to raise the funds for numerous causes were recognised and felicitated.

Prashant Nakwe of the ‘Times of India’ was named the winner of the ‘Best Published Photograph’ competition, while Raju Shinde of the ‘Mumbai Mirror’ and Pradeep Das of the ‘Indian Express’ were declared runners up, respectively.

Looking suave in a formal suit, the Bollywood heartthrob lauded the efforts of Standard Chartered and also talked about the importance of raising charities to bring a difference in someone’s life.

Rural road scheme, a hit amongst Jharkhand villagers

Koderma (Jharkhand), May 13 (ANI): The rural road developmental scheme, launched by the Prime Minister, is being applauded by the villagers of Koderma in Jharkhand.

The scheme was launched in 2000 to improve the condition of the rural roads in India and facilitate development.

The scheme got a fresh lease of life after the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was formed in 2004.

The villagers in Koderma district are very happy with the scheme as this eight kilometer long road connects about 20 villages with each other, acting as a lifeline in this belt.

The road has directly benefited the villagers on many counts, the most important being greater connectivity with bigger cities.

“It is a very important road. When the road was not constructed the people earlier had to walk all the way to catch the public transport. Now, the road has been made. The people reach the road using tempos to take the bus and go to places like Patna and Ranchi,” Pradeep Pandey, a villager.

The farmers in the village are also benefiting from the road. This road is directly connected to the National Highway 33 and other important cities in the state like Jhumri Telaiya and Hazaribagh, which has enabled the farmers to sell their produce directly in the open market, thus avoiding middlemen.

The villagers are also relieved because improved connectivity meant that ailing people could now be rushed to hospitals in the city in case of any emergency.

They feel that the road will speed up the developmental process and enlighten them more because of increased interaction with the cities.

“The villagers now go to the city to solve their problems immediately. This has made the villagers very happy,” said Shyam Sunder Singh, a social activist in the region.

The scheme is to be implemented in phases. Population in the area would govern the number of roads under each phase.

It is expected that about 3, 75,000 km of new road construction and 3, 72,000 km of upgradation/renewal would be undertaken as part of the scheme.

As of May 24, 2007, more than 122,000 km of roads have been completed under the Prime Minister Rural Road Scheme and work is in progress to cover another 1,00,000 km.

The construction cost of the road is being fully borne by the Government of India as a Centrally sponsored Scheme, while the State Governments are responsible for providing funds for maintenance. By Girija Shankar Ojha(ANI)

Bollywood actors add glamour to election campaign

Agra/ Hathras, May 4 (ANI): Bollywood actors and a former cricket captain lent glamour to the Congress party’s election campaign.

Film stars Mahima Chaudhary and Raza Murad campaigned for Prabhudayal Katheria, Congress candidate from Agra.

Chaudhary asked people to vote for a government that will focus on development.

“Compare the situation in Delhi, which is ruled by the Congress for the last 15 years and Uttar Pradesh that is ruled by other parties for the last 15 years. Please don’t be under false impressions. We don’t want a government like the one you have in Uttar Pradesh. We want our country to be ruled by Congress,” she said.

Meanwhile, in Hathras, cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Azharuddin rooted for the Congress candidate, Pradeep Chandel.

“Here whatever development has taken was under the rule of Congress, after that there was no development. Here there were many mills that were closed. I think if you vote for Chandel and make him strong, he will work hard,” he said. (ANI)

Asha Goel murder: Lie detector test on accused

MUMBAI: The metropolitan magistrate’s court has granted crime branch the permission to conduct brain mapping and lie detector tests on Praveen
Vatsa, an accused in the Asha Goel murder case. A police team will take Vatsa to the government forensic lab at Bangalore next week.

Asha, a Canada-based doctor, was found murdered in a flat on Malabar Hill on August 23, 2003. She had come to the city to settle property disputes between her brothers, Subhash and Suresh. Asha wanted to ensure that her third brother, Shekhar, got his dues.

In September 2003, the police arrested one Pradeep Parab, whose interrogation led to the arrest of three more persons-Pawankumar Goenka, Manohar Shinde and Narendra Goel. Narendra was Asha’s relative. Vatsa, Narendra’s domestic help, was arrested last week after officials found out that he had lied about his employer’s whereabouts.

Police believe that Vatsa was part of the murder conspiracy. While Suresh died in 2004, the police have sought Interpol’s help to bring in Subhash, who is in Canada.

CR stumbles upon fudged season tickets

MUMBAI: In another example of how technology can be exploited for fraudulent practices, the Central Railway (CR) has detected cases where season
tickets are fudged after scanning, making them seem like originals.

The sixth such case came to light two days ago at Dadar. Ticket checkers were conducting a special drive against ticketless travellers when they accidentally stumbled upon what officials suspect is the tip of an iceberg.

When Pradeep Shah, a TC, accosted a youth in Dadar, he produced a monthly season ticket issued from Dombivli. “It was wrapped in a polythene folder and the print was unclear. On closer inspection, Shah found the paper quality was different. The usual watermark was missing,” CR chief PRO S C Mudgerikar said. The anti-fraud squad was alerted and found it was a scanned copy of a ticket issued earlier.

“The original ticket was issued on January 1 at Dombivli and had expired in a month. The culprit was arrested and handed over to the GRP,” Mudgerikar said.
An original season ticket, which has expired, is altered by changing its validity date. It is then scanned to hide any alteration markings. Further the scanned copy is put in a polythene folder so as to blur the details.

The CR seen a spurt in ticketless travel. In March alone, 35,066 cases were detected adding Rs 1.41 crore to CR coffers in terms of fines. In 2008-09, CR collected Rs 16 crore from Mumbai division- an increase of 13.24% growth from last year.

Inter-bank ATM usage becomes free from today

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) directive to render charge-free for customers, the usage of automated teller machine (ATM), comes into effect on Wednesday. According to the directive a customer can withdraw money from his bank account using the ATM of any other bank, at no cost.

The charges would be borne by the banks. Despite this, banks have shown no trend of slowing down ATM deployment.

“The directive would get more end customers to ATMs. So if a person was using an ATM about thrice a month, the usage will only increase as there is no charge,” said Pradeep Sen, managing director of NCR Corp – which makes ATM machines – in India.

“I can see two scenarios where banks can turn this situation to their advantage. The bigger banks can deploy more ATMs thereby ensuring a steady flow of customers and the smaller banks, on a tight infrastructure budget can take advantage by riding on other banks’ ATMs and paying the charge,” said Sen.

Banks such as Axis Bank and State Bank of India have already begun deployment of more ATMs. Axis is set to put out 400 ATMs, while SBI, after its expansion, would have a 12,000-strong ATM network.

Union Bank of India is looking at adding 500 ATMs to its network to take advantage of the directive. “We were the first bank to give this service even when others have been charging their customers for using other ATMs,” said M V Nair, chairman and managing director of Union Bank.

President inducts high-tech VVIP jets in Indian Air Force

New Delhi, Apr. 1 (ANI): President Pratibha Patil has inducted the new state-of-the-art VVIP jets into the Indian Air Force before going on board its maiden flight to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The new jets can double as an office-in-the sky and a command centre in an emergency situation, like a nuclear attack.

“The trip would now be more business like. We will get more time to study, concentrate and apply our minds as the flight will be more smooth,” said Patil at the inauguration ceremony.

The sparkling white Boeing Business Jet has been designed on the line of the US President’s famous Air Force One aircraft and comes equipped with a wide range of security cover and latest communication devices.

“The aircraft has some of the finest high technology systems and is equipped with excellent communication systems,” said Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik.

The 60-passenger-capacity aircraft has four sections. The first or presidential section is decorated with light and dark wooden panels with six leather seats.

Another section has a bedroom for the President in which all the major entertainment and communication facilities are available. The other two sections are for senior officials travelling with the President or the Prime Minister.

The aircraft is equipped with modern hi-tech missile defense system, which includes a protection suite and chaff dispensers to ward off missile threats besides other security gadgets.

The jets, powered by two CFM-56 engines respectively, manufactured by US General Electric and French Snecma, are designed to have long range flights. The planes can fly at the height of 41,000 feet at a speed of 410 knots.

While one of the three jets inducted into the IAF’s Headquarters Communication Squadron is meant exclusively for the President and the Prime Minister, the other is for ferrying special guests and senior ministers. The third jet would be on a stand-by.
