India’s Ashis Roy completes 104th marathon

Washington, June 6 (IANS) Running his third marathon in 33 days, India’s grand old marathon man Ashis Roy has completed his 104th marathon finishing the Sunburst Marathon in South Bend, Indiana, in pouring rain.

Roy, who turned 78 June 1, finished the 26.2 mile run through South Bend town and along St Joseph River Saturday in 6 hours and 43 minutes – four minutes more than his last run in Bob Potts Heritage Rail Trail Marathon in York, Pennsylvania two weeks ago.

It was pretty hot when the race started at 6 a.m. but he still managed to complete the first half in a comfortable 3 hours and 15 minutes, but around the 19th mile on the return run it started raining heavily slowing him down a bit.

The veteran Indian runner, who completed his 100th marathon in Mumbai Jan 17, has no plans to hang his boots yet. ‘I want to keep running to show to the world that Indians too can do well in sports,’ Roy, the oldest of 840 participants told IANS on phone.

Amazed that he was still running at 78, a few came up to him and said: ‘You are a superman’. ‘It was a grand feeling,’ said Roy.

Another reason that keeps him going is: ‘I want to tell the sports authorities in India that they should not restrict sports to youth only. But it should be open to all.’

Roy, who has penned a book on ‘Joy of Running’ is listed in the Limca Book of Records, and has, to date, competed in 37 marathons in India and 67 marathons in 20 other countries, including the International Veterans Marathon in Athens in 1986.

Roy, a resident of New Delhi, began running marathons at the age of 52 when he retired as a cardiologist with the Indian Air Force.

Calls for water restrictions in the NT

Environmentalists say the Northern Territory Government’s new rainwater tank rebate needs to be accompanied by low-level water restrictions to effectively reduce water use.

Stuart Blanch from the NT Environment Centre has welcomed the rebate worth up to $1900, but wants a ban on hosing paved areas and using sprinklers when it is raining.

He says there is a mistaken belief that the Top End has unlimited water.

“It seems crazy that in January and February you could drive around Darwin during some heavy periods of rain and see sprinklers coming on automatically even when it’s pouring rain and some of those seem to be on areas owned and managed by the Territory Government,” he said.

“Now that can’t continue.”

Mr Blanch says incentives alone will not achieve the Government’s goal of reducing household water use by 30 per cent over the next 10 years.

“The elephant in the room really is to have permanent low-level restrictions on inappropriate use for example sprinklers on days when it’s raining or using hoses on paved areas like footpaths.”

Its ‘raining and pouring’ Potter fans at film’s London premiere!

London, July 8 (ANI): Here’s the Harry Potter effect. Fans of the hit wizard series braved the pouring rain to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars at the London premiere of the new film.

Devotees were left undeterred by the weather, and gathered in the early hours of the morning at Leicester Square, where they were seen cheering and waving banners for the cast of ‘Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince’.

Jason Isaacs, who played villain Lucius Malfoy in the earlier films, said that he was barely surprised by the fans’ dedication.

“Frankly I think they would turn out in earthquakes and tornadoes. That’s the effect the Harry Potter stories have. A lot of people have tried to understand why but nobody really understands – it’s magic,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

Stars walking down the soaked red carpet included Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Grainger, celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver with their families, Clive Owen, Graham Norton and Gary Lineker. (ANI)

Anna Friel embarrassed after breaking wind before Will Ferrell

London, February 10 (ANI): Actress Anna Friel has revealed that how embarrassed she felt after breaking wind on the set of her new film ‘Land of the Lost’.

The former Brookside star revealed that it happened in front of Hollywood star Will Ferrell.

She blamed vegetable juice drinks for the smelly act.

“I’ve never been so mortified. It let off the most awful smell,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

Anna recently shot a scene in which she jumps out of the motor and pumps up a flat tyre – dressed in nothing but lacy suspenders and a baggy top.

In the scene, Friel is shown breaking down on her way back from working at a dodgy massage parlour.

Dressed in skimpy, ripped stockings and high heels, Friel somehow manages to perform a slick wheel change in the pouring rain.

The gripping scene was filmed for hit TV drama The Street, written by Jimmy McGovern for BBC1.(ANI)
