SunTec wins two strategic customers in Middle East

Trivandrum/United Arab Emirates, Sept 16 (ANI/Business Wire India): SunTec, the leading provider of Relationship-based Pricing and Centralized Billing solutions, has announced two strategic wins in the Middle East region, one of which has helped the company to gain a foothold in Port Operations Billing – its fifth operating domain.

One of the largest banks in UAE has invested in SunTec’s Relationship-based and Centralized Billing solution, while a leading Port Operator of the region has signed up to SunTec to automate and centralize the pricing and billing operations for their vessels as well as cargo operations, helping them to offer a convergent bill to customers and effectively manage multiple contracts.

The solution will be implemented in multiple phases at the leading bank, and by the end of phase-I in December 2009 their ‘Customer Benefits Program’ will go live for retail banking.

The bank will thus be among the first few in UAE offering comprehensive customer benefits programs. SunTec’s solution being the pivot, the bank will be able to scale up their benefits programs to customer with ease.

Furthermore, in future, the bank will leverage SunTec’s solution for streamlining and automating their pricing and billing functions across enterprise.

The solution offers pertinent pricing innovations for the leading port operator also.

The complex multi-national operations of modern-day ports call for streamlined Relationship-based Pricing. New models like cost-based billing have become more relevant, as containerised trade is gaining prominence across the globe.

The situation demands differential pricing to be offered to customers based on the value they bring in.

“With these wins, SunTec has not only gained considerable footprint in the Middle East region, but also established its multi-industry compatibility,” said Nanda Kumar, CEO of SunTec.

“We conceptualized and created our core pricing and billing platform, horizontal in nature and flexible enough to address the pricing and billing requirements of any transaction-based vertical, all the while, helping our customers to imbibe best practices from multiple industries,” added Kumar. India, Bangladesh discuss dam on Barak river

New Delhi, Sep 9(ANI): Union Water Resource Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal met visiting Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni on Wednesday to discuss a dam project which is being built by India on the Barak river.

India has approved plans for a 1,500 megawatt project at Tipaimukh on the river, which flows through both countries before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

Bangladesh is asking India to scrap the dam project on Barak River, as experts warn that the dam being built in Manipur could make two rivers in Bangladesh -Surma and Kushiara- dry up, which would be a drastic environmental disaster and affect millions of people.

Earlier, India had commissioned the Farakka Barrage in 1974 on the river Ganges along Bangladesh’s northern border to divert water to the river Hoogly to keep Kolkata port navigable.

As a result, Bangladesh faced severe water shortages during winter until a 30-year agreement was signed in 1996 to share the flow.

Critics of the new project cite environmental experts as predicting similar results this time. (ANI)

Inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Security and Development of the Andaman and Nicobar islands’ here, Dr Kalam said that a 250 mw nuclear power station on one of the islands would form the core of the development programme.

Dr Kalam said the islands being a vital part of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) of the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) would have “enhanced significance” in the next decade.

He further said that the ANC should have bases for static aircraft carrier and a nuclear,

Dr Kalam also called upon the Armed Forces to evolve an effective security plan for underneath the sea, at sea level and in air.

“The security plan which you evolve should ensure that there is no unauthorised occupation of the vacant islands,”said Dr Kalam.

Meanwhile, Commander-in-Chief of the ANC, Vice Admiral Vijay Shankar, said that the location of these islands confers a geostrategic advantage.

“Its economic and forest potential dictates a sound security presence,” he added.

PPP has not given any ‘guarantee’ regarding Musharraf indemnity: Kaira

Islamabad, Sep.4 (ANI): Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has rebutted reports regarding Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) giving assurance not to prosecute former President General Pervez Musharraf on high treason charges.

Kaira said the PPP has not given any ‘guarantee’ to any country regarding clemency to Musharraf.

“Though friendly countries generally give advice on various matters but it is not binding on the government,” Kaira said.

In an interview with The Nation, he categorically rejected media reports that Musharraf’s step down was pre-planned and a part of a ‘secret’ arrangement.

“PPP had expelled Musharraf from Aiwan-e-Sadr with the support of masses,” he stressed.

When asked about Interior Advisor, Rehman Malik’s visit to Saudi Arabia, just before Musharraf’s meeting with king Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Kaira said it was a routine affair and it had nothing to do with the Musharraf issue.

Kaira also denied presence of US Blackwater on Pakistani soil, saying Islamabad would never allow any private security agency to operate inside country’s territory.

“Some personnel of private security agencies of the US after taking clearance by the government are protecting the NATO trucks which transport supplies from Port Qasim to Afghanistan and nothing else,” he said.

“As the US is leading war against terror therefore its facilities and staff are more prone to terror attacks than other countries therefore they need more security to protect themselves,” he added. (ANI)

Obamas’ condole death of Edward Kennedy

Martha’s Vineyard (Virgina, US), Aug.26 (ANI): US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, on Wednesday condoled the death of former Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy.

Kennedy, the family patriarch, died of complications arising out of brain cancer at his Hyannis Port home on Tuesday. He was 77.

In his statement, Obama said: ” Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.

For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.

I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I’ve profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.

An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time.

And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad.

Our hearts and prayers go out to them today-to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family. (ANI)

79.5-kms-long Ganesha Chathurthi convoy sets record in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Aug. 24 (ANI): Malaysia’s longest convoy of 213 lorries participated in Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations on Sunday, marking the birthday of Hindu Lord Ganesha.

The 79.5 kilometres long convoy, which included an elephant to signify the deity, achieved a new feat in the Malaysia Book of Records.

Hundreds of devotees walked beside the lorries, which had been decorated with portraits of the elephant-headed Hindu god, in a procession that began from the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara, the Star Online reports.

The procession stopped briefly at various places, including the Kottu Malai Pillaiyar temple in Jalan Pudu Lama.

Among the devotees at the Kottu Malai temple was J.K. Vassanthi, a school teacher, who has been taking a fast of silence in homage to Lord Ganesha’s birthday for the past 28 years.

Another devotee who came to offer her prayers there was a Chinese woman, who embraced Hinduism three years ago.

“I feel calm and serene in this temple,” said the woman, who only wanted to be known as Adeline.

The 32-year-old fitness trainer said she often prayed at a nearby temple but decided to drop by Kottu Malai after finding out about the festival.

Clerk C. Minatchi, 31, said she had been going to the temple every week for six years since her prayers had been answered.

“My brother had gone into coma after an accident. I prayed to Lord Ganesha and 10 days later, my brother recovered,” she said.

Port company executive C. Kaleappan, 51, said he had been travelling all the way from Penang with his family to celebrate the occasion at Kottu Malai for the past 18 years.

“I feel a special bond with this temple and with the blessings of the Lord, my family is prosperous and healthy,” he said, who came with his wife and three daughters. (ANI)

Jewish temple found in Turkey may date back to 3rd century AD

Ankara (Turkey), August 13 (ANI): Archaeologists have uncovered a centuries-old Jewish temple in Antalya, Turkey, which may date back to the 3rd century AD.

According to a report in Today’s Zaman, ongoing excavations at the ancient port city of Andriake in Lycia – located in Antalya’s Demre district – uncovered the centuries-old Jewish temple.

Site chief Dr. Nevzat Cevik, an archaeology professor at Akdeniz University, told the Anatolia news agency that his team believes the temple is from around the third century.

“Located on a choice spot facing the sea, the temple was likely built following a law instituted in 212 that allowed Jews the right to become Roman citizens,” Cevik said.

The find is important, as it is the first archaeological trace of Jewish culture found in Lycia.

“For the archaeological world, the world of science and particularly for Lycian archaeology and history, we’re facing an important find here. It’s the first remnant of Lycian Jewish culture we’ve found,” Cevik said, describing the find.

“When we first discovered the temple, we weren’t sure what it was, but after continuing to dig, the archaeological findings and particularly the first-quality marble slabs that we found were evidence for us that they were part of a Jewish temple,” he added.

“To encounter remnants of Jewish culture for the first time has caused great excitement. We’re adding another layer to what we know of Lycian culture – now that we know that there was a Jewish presence in Lycia as well, we can follow this path and better understand other finds,” he explained.

As part of the temple find, the team located a menorah and pieces inscribed with traditional Jewish symbols and figures.

Cevik also noted the importance that the find would eventually have for tourism in the region. (ANI)

New evidence confirms antiquity of ‘Persian Gulf’ title

Tehran, July 6 (ANI): The second phase of archeological excavations in the Iranian port city of Siraf has yielded new evidence that confirms the antiquity of the Persian Gulf title.

According to a report in Press TV, Iranian archeologists discovered Sassanid and early-Islamic residential strata as well as a number of intact amphoras used in sea trade during the Parthian, Abbasid and early Islamic eras.

“The unearthed amphoras are the first of their kind found in Siraf and can provide useful clues about water trade routes,” said head of the Siraf archeology team Mohammad Esmaili.

“The team also found bright red Indian earthenware in the Siraf fortress, which date back to the late Sassanid era,” he added.

The fortress lies at the site’s highest area and was used to protect the governor and his family during wars.

“The second phase of Siraf excavations aimed to determine the cultural sequence, study the expansion of urbanism in Siraf and explore its commercial relations with southern regions of the Persian Gulf, central Iran, India and china during Sassanid and Islamic eras,” said Esmaili.

He added that the recent findings are important evidence proving the age-old title of the ‘Persian’ Gulf.

While historical documents show that the waterway has always been referred to as the ‘Persian Gulf’, certain Arab states have recently mounted efforts to remove ‘Persian’ from the name of the waterway.

Iran designated April 30 as the National Persian Gulf Day to highlight the fact that the waterway has been referred to by historians and ancient texts as ‘Persian’ since the Achaemenid Empire was established in what is now modern day Iran.

The ancient city of Siraf is located 220 kilometers southeast of Bushehr and approximately 380 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas.

The discovery of east African ivory objects, Indian stone pieces, and Afghan lapis confirmed the use of the historic port as the main marine trade route during the pre-Islamic era and the first four centuries following the advent of Islam. (ANI)

Pakistan has an estimated 5 million drug addicts

Islamabad, June 28 (ANI): The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has estimated that there are about 5 million drug addicts in Pakistan, and that the invasion of drugs is affecting younger people in the country.

KPT Chairperson Nasreen Haque revealed this fact during a seminar at its Staff College on Friday, which was aimed at creating awareness about drug abuse and to prevent it in the society.

She further said that drugs that reach the country under various garbs are threatening to control people’s lives.

She also stressed the need for measures to keep the invasion of such drugs in check.

She said that the country has a colossal problem at hand, and that a committed response was required to address it effectively.

Nasreen insisted that synergistic efforts were required to implement various drug prevention and treatment strategies.

Doormats are health and safety risk, warn Brit council officials

London, Jun 26 (ANI): British families living in a flat block have been told by council officials to remove welcome mats from their porches, as they are a health and safety risk.

The families, at the block in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, have also been told to remove potted plants because they create trip hazards and fire risks.

Residents say that the items have never caused any problems, but council officials claim that if people have to evacuate the properties in the event of a fire they could trip over the obstacles.

Annette Ball, a grandmother who lives at Port Vale Court, said the rules were ridiculous.

“We’ve tried to make our porches homely, but we’re not even allowed to have a picture on the wall,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“We are going to officially appealing against these new rules,” she stated.

The fire regulations came in a year ago, but the latest inspection by Stoke City Council left them with a number of concerns.

John Daniels, the council cabinet member for housing and neighbourhood services, defended the decision.

“Fire regulations that apply to places like Port Vale Court are becoming more stringent every year,” he said.

“Our most recent inspection of these premises showed that items such as pot plants and carpets in the foyers did not comply so we have asked for these items to be removed to make the building safer,” he explained.

Fiona McEvoy, spokesman for council and taxpayer watchdog the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said she could not believe the ban.

“Councils should concern themselves with providing vital public services rather than interfering with the lives of good, honest people,” she said.

“Public money should be spent on thins we really need, not bizarre health and safety whims,” she added. (ANI)

New handheld device detects anthrax with outstanding accuracy and reliability

Washington, June 26 (ANI): Scientists have developed a handheld device that can detect anthrax with outstanding accuracy and reliability.

The device, called Ceeker (pronounced “seeker”), was made by scientists at Veritide Ltd., a developer of innovative biological identification and detection solutions.

It can discriminate between anthrax spores and similar-looking hoax substances.

The data show that in over two weeks of testing at the Midwest Research Institute in Florida, the company’s Ceeker scanner accurately identified 100 percent of the anthrax samples used and was correct in 95 percent of tests involving hoax substances.

“We knew that our innovative Ceeker is capable of producing outstanding results in distinguishing between anthrax and look-alike hoax substances, and now we have definitive data confirming its performancem,” said Andrew Rudge, Chief Executive Officer of Veritide.

“Even better, these extraordinary results were generated by a small portable handheld system that requires no special skills or training to operate and that can produce a result within minutes, enabling first responders to rapidly determine whether the situation is a nuisance or a major threat to public health,” he added.

The Ceeker employs optical detection technology developed at New Zealand’s University of Canterbury.

It uses ultraviolet light and special algorithms to detect bacterial spores and provides test results within minutes, without the need for wet chemistry or analytic processes that can be difficult to handle in the field.

The Ceeker is capable of producing test results from very small amounts of sample and does not consume or destroy the sample being tested, allowing it to be re-analyzed later for forensic applications.

In contrast, existing detection approaches require longer and more complex processing to distinguish anthrax from other substances (between 30 minutes and three days). Their accuracy is inferior to the Ceeker and the sample is typically destroyed during testing.

According to Professor Lou Reinisch, an inventor of the Ceeker technology, “These new data definitively confirm the validity of the detection concepts underlying the Ceeker and should help fuel its wider use among such first responders as fire and police departments, HazMat teams, postal services, port and airport security, and defense and military authorities.”

The Ceeker has also been previously validated by forensic laboratory ESR, which conducted multiple rounds of testing using anthrax simulants and hoax substances.

The successful US test results have triggered significant sales from US customers who had pre-ordered the Ceeker but were waiting for positive direct anthrax testing results before proceeding. (ANI)

The ‘orgy island’ in Malaysia that wants you to bare all under the moonlight!

Kuala Lumpur, May 19 (ANI): A couple, who is believed to have arranged a sex orgy party on Pulau Perhentian, have been fined 25,000RM under the Entertainment Act 2002 for organising a party without permit.

According to reports, the wild party was going on full swing before Besut District Council (MDB) enforcement officers moved in on the revellers.

It was the second time that such a party had been held on the island. The first party, themed ‘Buffalo Bars Pink Lady’, was organised on May 3.

The party that took place on May 10 was themed ‘Come bare under the moonlight’. It left council officer Razman Ahmad, who led the team, startled to find condoms strewn on the secluded beachfront where the party was held.

“I can’t disclose more facts as the council has lodged a police report on the matter, but I can tell you that there were activities associated with sexual intercourse on that night and this was substantiated by the discovery of sex paraphernalia,” Star Online quoted Ahmad as saying.

Though he has declined to give any details on whether he witnessed the revellers having sex when council officials arrived at the scene, investigations have shown that the organiser was a 31-year-old man from Kedah who arranged the party with his girlfriend from Ireland.

The lady in question is under police investigation for organising similar parties, including in Langkawi and Port Dickson, and also for being the one responsible for posting the invitation on her Facebook.

Ahmad added that the scantily-clad teenagers, some of them foreigners, were intoxicated when his team arrived at 1am in two speedboats, and after he decided to call his superior to brief him on the situation, the police were informed and 15 officers arrived at the scene.

The officers seized alcoholic drinks worth about 90,000 RM, loudspeakers, audio equipment, psychotropic pills, drug and sex paraphernalia during the raid on the party attended by 200 teenagers, who were invited via Facebook.

Of the first party, council president Wan Mustafa Wan Hassan said that the officers were unable to reach the site on time as they received the tip-off late. (ANI)
