Oz Sex Party livid over move to declare pornography to Customs

Melbourne, May 20 (ANI): A new question on immigration forms in Australia regarding declaration of pornography to Customs has come under the scanner as being an invasion of privacy.

The Australian Sex Party, a political party, has questioned whether it is feasible for Customs to go through personal belongings, and that if they did so, it would be a major attack on privacy.

“Is it fair that Customs officers rummage through luggage and pull out a legal men’s magazine or a lesbian journal in front of their children or their mother-in-law,” News.com.au quoted the party’s president Fiona Patten as saying.

The issue has echoes of the 1956 detention of famed British conductor and composer Sir Eugene Goossens who had his bag searched upon return from Europe.

He was carrying material that was considered, at the time, pornographic and his reputation was subsequently ruined forcing him to flee the country.

“The term pornography is not referred to at all in the federal Classification Act which Customs rely on to classify their material,” Patten added.

Comment on the matter was being sought from Customs. (ANI)

Aboriginal people ’20 times’ more likely to commit violence

Indigenous people are 15 to 20 times more likely to commit violent offences than non-Indigenous people according to research released today.

The Australian Institute of Criminology analysed police data from Western Australia and South Australia and national murder rates.

The Institute’s Director, Dr Adam Tomison says the study found violent offending is linked to illicit drug use, childhood violence, exposure to pornography and socioeconomic disadvantage.

But he says alcohol is by far the biggest cause of violent offending by indigenous people.

“Leaving aside all these issues of disadvantage, alcohol still comes up as a major factor for people committing crimes, violent crimes, that’s what we actually found ” Dr Tomison said.

“So there is a disadvantage issue but there is also, above and beyond that, whether you are disadvantaged or not … an alcohol issue. Alcohol is fuelling a lot of the crime.”

The new study also found Indigenous women are five times more likely to commit a violent offence than non-indigenous men.

“If you look at that data, what you find is Aboriginal females or Indigenous females are committing crimes 35 times more often than non-Indigenous females and five times more often than non-Indigenous males,” Dr Tomison said.

Jail for child groomer

A 59-year-old Canberra man who had more than 42,000 child porn images on his computer and groomed a boy for sex over the internet will spend a year in jail.

Alan Winston Priest came to the attention of the Australian Federal Police after he had an internet chat room exchange with an FBI agent posing as a 14-year-old American boy.

He sent child porn to the fictitious boy 70 times and gave him tips on how to loiter around public toilets for sex.

In assessing his risk of re-offending, Justice Hilary Penfold told the ACT Supreme Court she acknowledged Priest had undergone extensive counselling.

But she said there was nothing to show that his sexual interests had changed.

She sentenced Priest to three-and-a-half years in jail, including 12 months in full-time custody.

Call to ban porn from newsagents’ shelves

A group of prominent Australians is calling for a ban on the sale of soft pornographic magazines in mainstream retail outlets.

In a letter to the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General, the group asks for a review of the rules which allow magazines like Penthouse and Playboy to be sold in newsagents, supermarkets and petrol stations.

The group also wants a review of the censorship laws governing the ratings of so-called ‘lads mags’ like Zoo and Ralph.

Signatories to the letter include the former chief justice of the Family Court Alastair Nicholson, and the Reverend Tim Costello from World Vision Australia.

Reverend Costello says while pornographic images are available on the internet, making the magazines so widely available is leading to the early sexualisation of children.

“There is a tide of commodifying sexuality, robbing children of innocence, and I think that’s why this letter is important,” he said.

“In many ways what happens on newsstands is communicating a message that this is publicly acceptable.

“Adults, everybody who walks in to just buy their milk or pay for their petrol, buy their paper, is saying this is normal, this is what we now embrace.

“And I think this is particularly devious in the signals it sends to children.”

Jesse James ‘exposed private parts to his ex-employee’

New York, March 27 (ANI): Sandra Bullock’s husband Jesse James had exposed his private parts to a former West Coast Choppers employee, it has emerged.

Deann McClung, who used to work under the TV mechanic at his Long Beach store, had filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against him in 2000.

According to the suit, James inappropriately touched McClung and exposed his private parts to McClung.

Also, he kept pornography in the store and lewdly glanced at female employees, reports the New York Daily News.

McClung claims she was fired after she complained about her James’ behavior on Jan. 19, 2000.

However, the lawsuit was dismissed at the request of both her and James” attorneys.

James’ numerous alleged extra-marital affairs were recently exposed. (ANI)

Top cop defends action over racist emails

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland has defended his crackdown against the circulation of racist and pornographic emails among officers.

About 100 officers are being investigated for the alleged mis-use of the police email system – one of whom was a sergeant who took his own life in Healesville on Monday.

The Police Association says Mr Overland’s approach assumes targeted officers are guilty, but Mr Overland says that is just spin and he has had to take strong and decisive action over the matter.

“This is about maintaining the confidence of the Victorian community in Victoria Police,” he said.

“How can a community have confidence in this organisation if we allow racist, sexist, pornographic material to circulate freely around the organisation? We can’t do it.”

Commissioner Overland says the emails distributed on the Victoria Police email system are “disturbing, offensive and gross”.

“There are quite a large number of police officers who have become involved. They won’t all face dismissal. But it is quite widespread,” he said.

Commissioner Overland will not describe the emails, but says they do not contain any illegal material.

But he says they do include racism and pornography and the Police Ethical Standards Department has been investigating the matter for months.

“The material we’re talking about, I believe, is highly offensive and would shock the community,” he said.

“There are various and varying degrees of involvement and we’ll need to treat each case on its merits.”

Culture of racism?

News of the emails comes just a week after a report by community lawyers detailed allegations from members of Melbourne’s African community of police abuse and assault.

Melbourne University’s Dr Yin Paradies is an expert in the effects of racism. He says the revelation about the racist emails could be seen as more evidence of a culture of racism in the police force.

“We want a police force that’s impartial and that treats people from every ethnic and racial group fairly,” he said.

He says the way the news of this scandal is received by the public could have the potential to undermine good police work.

“And it would have the potential to undermine trust in the police force and respect for police and the integrity of their work,” he said.

The spotlight has also turned to how Commissioner Overland is handling the matter.

He has issued two senior officers with what is known as a section 68, which demands that they justify why they should be allowed to keep their jobs.

Head of the Police Association Greg Davies says it is not fair.

“It sounds a little like the judge is passing sentencing without hearing any evidence,” he said.

Senior Sergeant Davies says it is a guilty-until-proven-innocent approach and it shows the Chief Commissioner has too much discretion.

“We’re talking now about career police officers who can’t just walk down the street to the next police factory and sign on for more work,” he said.

“If it’s a one-off incident of a minor nature we don’t think that they should be automatically told they’re going to be dismissed, unless they can convince the Chief Commissioner otherwise.”

A woman who phoned ABC local radio in Melbourne today went further. She says her husband worked with the sergeant who shot himself at Healesville Police Station this week.

“He was given the letter. Now it was made very clear to … all the police officers within the eastern region. A meeting was held with senior inspectors and it was very clear to this deceased officer that he could either resign with his benefits or he’d be sacked without them,” the caller said.

But Commissioner Overland says the investigation has not been heavy-handed.

“I understand that I have very clear responsibilities around the use of these powers; that if I misuse these powers or don’t use them in an appropriate way it won’t survive appeal and will be overturned,” he said.

“I think there are appropriate safeguards in place. This is not action that I’ve taken lightly and I never take this action lightly. But I think in the circumstances it was appropriate.”

And he has the backing of Victorian Premier John Brumby.

First female mining engineering professor appointed at UQ

The University of Queensland (UQ) has appointed its first female lecturer in mining engineering.

Dr Penny Stewart has been a mining engineer for 15 years and recently worked on Brisbane’s Clem Seven tunnel.

She says she has noticed a positive move towards accepting women within the mining industry.

“Since I graduated back in 1995 there’s definitely been a lot of change in the industry and probably how the experience that what women mining engineers have when they join the industry,” she said.

“When I graduated there was still that element of pornography and stuff like that that was around the sites and you know but you don’t see that sort of thing anymore.”

Dr Stewart says students have told her it is refreshing to be taught by a female.

“It’s been a really lovely experience because at the end of one of my first lectures a couple of the female students came up to me afterwards and said it was really nice to have a female lecturer just as a change,” she said.

“It made me realise that up until that point I hadn’t really thought of it as being a big deal.

“But when I realised that it did have an impact on the students it made me feel good you know that they thought it was a good thing.”

Porn baron Paul Raymond’s granddaughter to devote herself to charity

London, Mar 24 (ANI): English publisher of pornography Paul Raymond’s granddaughter has revealed that she wants to devote herself to charity. [Cut]

Fawn James, 24, who came to know she would inherit an estimated 650 million pounds after the Soho porn baron died in 2008, has not revealed till now what she intends to do with all the money.

“I want to help people as much as possible, so I am focusing on a lot of charity work now,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying at the Lighthouse Gala Auction for the Terrence Higgins Trust.

Fawn, who graduated in anthropology from Edinburgh University last year, lost her mother Debbie Raymond in 1992 to a drugs overdose.

“I am still interested in anthropology and I am not saying I will never work again, but for now I am so involved in the charity work, which I hope will make more of a difference,” she added. (ANI)

Man avoids jail over porn video of 8yo

A South Australian man has avoided a jail term for downloading international child pornography.

Shane Padberg, 26, of Elizabeth North was among 15 Australians charged last year.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege a video showing the rape of an eight-year-old girl was downloaded.

The AFP said it acted on information from German police who identified 9,000 suspects worldwide.

Adelaide District Court Judge Kevin Nicholson said Padberg conceded he had more than 800 images and more than 2,000 videos of despicable pornography involving children aged between nine months and 14 years.

But the judge said the man was not considered to be a paedophile.

Padberg was given a suspended jail sentence and put on a two-year good behaviour bond.

He must get treatment and counselling.

Porn links posted on Fielding’s website

Links to pornographic websites have been posted on the website of Family First Senator Steve Fielding.

The links, in Russian, were posted on a public forum section of the senator’s website in February, but were not detected until a northern Tasmanian man alerted the ABC.

Senator Fielding wants the Australian Federal Police to investigate the links.

He says he is disturbed by the breach as some of the links are connected to Russian websites that involve children.

“From what I’ve been told – I haven’t seen the sites that have been referred through to – they are sites that I don’t think anyone should be really viewing or actually seeing,” he said.

“We’re gong to be referring it through to the Australian Federal Police.”

Senator Fielding says the breach strengthens his case for the tighter regulation of internet content.

“Look I don’t know what drives people to do this sort of thing,” he said.

“It is disturbing. But I suppose this is the reason why we do need to have some sort of classification, some sort of filtering, and I do know that is controversial.”

New cards for people on welfare restrictions

Welfare recipients who have their payments quarantined will not be able to spend the money unless they have a new card by the beginning of July.

Basics cards are being used among Indigenous welfare recipients in parts of the Northern Territory, Queensland’s Cape York and areas of Western and South Australia.

They can only be used at approved stores and cannot be used to purchase alcohol, pornography, tobacco, gambling products or gift vouchers.

The Federal Government is replacing the current basics cards with a new card which will have the recipient’s name printed on it.

Centrelink says the cards will start to be distributed to people from next week.

But recipients who do not have the new cards by July will not be able to spent their quarantined funds using their old basics card because it will no longer work.

Centrelink is confident all recipients will have new cards by that time.

Jesse James” mistress supports ‘white power,’ gives Nazi salute

Melbourne, Mar 20 (ANI): Michelle “Bombshell” McGee, the woman who carried on an 11-month affair with Sandra Bullock’s husband Jesse James, supports ‘white power,’ gives the Nazi salute and does pornographic shoots in her home, it has been claimed.

James has apologized to Bullock after his extra-martial affair became public, reports The Daily Telegraph.

And now, as per court papers connected to Michelle’s divorce from and custody battle with Ronald Shane Modica, the model is portrayed as being bi-polar and using drugs, reports RadarOnline.com

In a declaration filed January 27 of this year, Modica says of his ex-wife: “It seems as the years go by Avery’s mother slips more and more into stripping, pills, alcohol and performances she does online, pornography that she has brought into her home.

“There have been pornographic shoots there and live web cam pornographic broadcasts from her house.”

Modica also revealed that Michelle uses their son’s name, Avery, when she performs as her stripper.

Modical also charges about his ex wife: “There are coffins in the living room and child block magnets on the refrigerator that spell out White Power … her other son Elijah is Jewish and she thinks it’s funny that she makes the Nazi salute.” (ANI)

Parents exposing kids to porn should face criminal charges: Oz politician

Melbourne, September 14 (ANI): A senior member of the Liberal Party of Australia is drawing plans to protect kids from pornography, saying parents who expose their children to explicit material should face criminal charges.

Scott Morrison is pushing for changes to the law Down Under after a child protection case surfaced in his Sydney electorate, where a father views blue movies and web videos in front of his kid aged under five.

The mother, who lodged a complaint to police and the Department of Childrens Services, was told there is nothing in the law to prevent such conduct.

“We looked to see what remedies were available to help this mum protect her child, we found there were none – and the police confirmed as much to her,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Morrison as saying in his column on The Punch.

“The problem was the father in this case was not seeking to expose the child to this material, or anything else he was doing, as a step towards physically or sexually abusing the child.

“He just didn’t seem to care that bringing this stuff into the home and putting it in full view of his own child was a problem.

“While his actions may not constitute a sexual offence against a child under the strict definitions of the law, most of us would agree he is a complete idiot,” he added.

Morrison further said: “I am all for parental responsibility and allowing parents to bring up their child according to the values they hold dear as a family. But this is not one of those ‘not that there’s anything wrong with that’ scenarios . There is something wrong with this and our laws should say so.” (ANI)

Porn as bad as guns for kids, says Oz politician

Melbourne, September 10 (ANI): A senior member of the Liberal Party of Australia has warned against children’s exposure to pornography at home, saying viewing of the restricted material is as dangerous as guns for kids.

Scott Morrison suggested that laws should be introduced Down Under forbidding parents from letting their kids watch the explicit content.

“It is not acceptable to knowingly or negligently expose a child to pornographic material. To do so in my view is child abuse, ” News.com.au quoted Morrison as telling Federal Parliament.

“Even those who would defend an adult’s right to porn would surely not oppose any restriction or sanction placed on parents who knowingly or negligently expose their children to this abuse,” he added.

The 41-year old also said that porn should be treated like dangerous firearms and kept under lock and key to protect youngsters from its risks, that include developing sexually deviant tendencies, committing sexual offences and having difficulties with intimate relationships.

Morrison said: “Any ammunition must be stored in a locked and separate container, it must be put in a locked receptacle which is very solid, and failure to meet these requirements attracts a jail sentence.

“If we can protect our children from guns then we should also be aware of the loaded gun that is lying around in the homes of thousands of Australians on their computer, on their coffee table, in their bathroom or in their bookcase.” (ANI)

Demi Moore threatens to sue blogger Perez Hilton over daughter’s pics

Washington, September 4 (ANI): Hollywood actress Demi Moore has threatened to sue celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, after she spotted a link on the latter’s site directing viewers to a set of “inappropriate” pictures of her teen daughter Tallulah.

The 15-year-old is the youngest of Demi’s three daughters with ex-husband Bruce Willis.

According to reports, the snaps Demi is angry at show the teen baring her chest in a revealing top, and wearing a tiny pair of shorts.

Moore has expressed her disgust about the pictures on her Twitter.com page, accusing the blogger of flouting child pornography laws.

“Expect another letter from my attorney, kitten,” Contactmusic quoted her as having written.

Moore goes on to rage about Hilton’s “exploitation” of teens in a series of furious posts.

She wrote: “Clearly Perez Hilton isn’t taking violating child pornography laws very seriously. He might not but there are a lot of people who do! Anyone who advertises follows or supports Perez supports violating child pornography laws!”

She further wrote: “Let me ask all of you, what is it called when someone is telling people to look and focus on a child’s ‘boobs and ass’ while providing photos? (It’s) child pornography! Or just being a general pervert/creep. Disgusting! This is not a game. Children should not be exploited. They must be protected.”

Hitting back at Morre, Hilton called her comments “libellous, defamatory, inaccurate and stupid.”

In a post on his own Twitter.com page, he writes: “Thanks for drawing MORE attention to your daughter’s behaviour and your parenting skills (or lack thereof). U r (sic) real smart! That is CLEARLY not child porn. And I didn’t even post those on my site! I would not let my 15 year old daughter dress like that under ANY context. You are delusional and slightly senile!” (ANI)

Victory in Afghanistan similar to pornography: Holbrooke

Washington, Aug.13 (ANI): While US troops involved in an intense battle against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, President Obama’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, has compared success in Afghanistan to pornography.

Addressing a panel at the St. Regis Hotel, Holbrooke was asked about his views over how he sees victory in Afghanistan, and the continuation of drone strikes against Al-Qaeda and other outlawed outfits in the region, The Washington Independent reports.

Holbrooke replied: “The U.S. had to be ‘clear about what our national interests are’ ultimately, success would require taking a ‘Supreme Court test’, we’ll know it when we see it.”

Holbrooke’s statement was quite similar to what Justice Potter Stewart had once said while explaining pornography.

In 1964, Justice Stewart tried to explain ‘hard-core’ pornography, or what is obscene, by saying: “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced, but I know it when I see it.” (ANI)

Jacqui Smith was aware hubby had been watching porn movies

London, July 12 (ANI): Former British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has admitted that she was aware that her husband had been watching pornographic movies before the expenses scandal broke out.

Jacqui resigned from her post after the humiliating revelation that she claimed taxpayer-funded allowances for the cost of two porn films watched by her partner Richard Timney, who later made a public apology.

The Labour Party politician said that the couple often had arguments over Richard’s use of pornography.

“I would argue with him. I would say to him I think porn is wrong because of my feminist background,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying in an interview with the Guardian newspaper.

“It didn’t happen a lot, I was much more angry with him about the fact that we had not properly checked the expense claim than I was about the film,” she added.

Jacqui, who previously served as the first female Home Secretary, said she barely had any hopes that the damage to her reputation “will ever go away”.

She added: “My sister, who is a journalist, says you couldn’t have designed a story that was more embarrassing – or exciting for people. And it happened to me.” (ANI)

Prison officer charged with supplying porn to inmates

Melbourne, July 12 (ANI): A prison officer, who allegedly supplied pornography to inmates at a prison farm near Beaudesert, Australia, is under investigation.

The police and Queensland Corrective Services raided the Palen Creek Correctional Centre to find two portable memory sticks that allegedly contained pornographic images, in the prison officer’s locker, the Courier Mail reports.

The officer has been accused of passing on the memory sticks to inmates to upload porn on to their computers.

However, it is yet to be confirmed if the material includes child porn.

The man is charged with bringing in prohibited items to the restricted zone and needs to appear in the Beaudesert Magistrates Court on August 5.

Meanwhile, prison sources at the jail revealed that the officer has resigned after being issued a show cause notice.

Also Queensland Corrective Services have seized a number of computer hard drives belonging to both staff and prisoners for forensic test. (ANI)

Model posing nude for lunchtime show meets with public disapproval

London, Jul 9 (ANI): A lunchtime programme by Channel 4 has been met with disapproval, after it showed a nude model in various poses.

Model Kirsten Varley sparked a storm after she appeared completely nude for 30 minutes on the show, as a studio audience and viewers were encouraged to draw her by artist Gary Hume.

On receiving the complaints, Channel 4 insisted that the 12.30pm programme ‘Life Class: Today’s Nude’ was not sensational at all and was purely educational.

But dozens of viewers bombarded their switchboard, saying it was pornography.

One such watcher was writer Punteha Yazdanian, 23, who was in her sick bed watching daytime TV.

“It nearly gave me a relapse,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“I was disgusted by the sight of Kirsten flaunting her charms in a very suggestive way. This was adult viewing – not for screening in the middle of the day,” she said.

Other viewers argued that total nudity should only be shown after the 9 o’clock watershed in the evening.

The channel is showing five life-drawing classes throughout the week – each with a different model and tutor to tell viewers about art and drawing techniques.

But Alan Kane, the artist who came up with the idea for the programme, defended the show.

“Because it is educational and non-sexualised nudity, Channel 4 didn’t have any concerns with it at all,” he said. (ANI)

China installs censorship software in over 500,000 PCs

Shanghai, July 2 (ANI): Under the controversial Green Dam computer program, China has already installed censorship software in over half-a-million computers.

According to a report in The Telegraph, the Green Dam program has been downloaded three million times since the end of March and has been installed on 518,000 computers. Almost 7,000 websites in China have also installed the software.

On Tuesday night, the Chinese ministry of Industry and Internet Technology issued a short statement, indefinitely delaying a plan to make Green Dam compulsory on all computers sold on the mainland. The regulation was due to come into force on Wednesday.

The government retreated from the plan after fierce opposition from computer manufacturers, the US government and Chinese Internet users.

Once Green Dam is installed on a home computer, it links to a central database and automatically filters out all pornography and some politically sensitive content.

A spokesman for the US embassy said they welcomed the decision by the government to shelve the project.

According to researchers at the University of Michigan, the installation of Green Dam leaves computers more vulnerable to hacking. It may also be able to report an individual’s web-use back to the Chinese authorities.

A number of major computer manufacturers have already started selling computers with the software.

Sony and Lenovo, the Chinese company which bought IBM’s PC division, have already sold Green Dam compliant machines, while Acer, the Taiwanese manufacturer, said yesterday it intended to comply with the regulation. (ANI)
