How a pet pooch can help treat Parkinson”s

London, May 13 (ANI): A significant treatment for Parkinson”s disease has been revealed by doctors – a pet pooch.

Health of a 28-year-old woman with the brain disease improved thanks to her pooch.

The woman, who started taking large doses of four different drugs a day to control symptoms three years after being diagnosed, had a morphine pump for 14 hours a day and her health was deteriorating fast.

But after being given a highland terrier by a friend, docs reported improvements in symptoms and a drop in the drugs she needed, reports The Sun.

What’s more, she no longer needed her daily morphine.

Doctors at Imperial College London, who report her case in the Journal Of Neurology, said: “Remarkably sustained benefits occurred, with improvement in her walking and symptoms including appetite, sleep and bowel function, as well as socialisation.”

Docs are not able to zero in on the reason as to how the dog had such a dramatic effect, but they say that having to walk, feed and look after the pet encouraged her to exercise regularly. (ANI)

Now, Fetch Club for pooches to shake their tails at night!

New York, Apr 26 (ANI): Now your pooch would not be sulking in a home corner when you are going on a night-out with friends—all thanks to the Fetch Club where your doggies can shake their tails on a Friday night.

The 3,000-foot indoor dog park/canine club is slated to open next month in New York.

The club offers sybaritic amenities synonymous with Wall Street—special spa baths, holistic mud masks and facials, homemade meals, manicures— and even a doggie disco.

“If an owner wants to go out one night, they can drop their dog off at our nightclub,” the New York Post quoted owner Peter Balestrieri, as saying.

“We”re serious about the well-being of animals, but we also want them to have fun,” said co-owner Jenna Lee, a former finance worker now taking veterinary courses.

The more sedate canines can swing by Fetch Club during the day for playtime (chasing tennis balls), movie hour (classics like “101 Dalmatians” and “Lassie”), trot on a tiny treadmill (that has a TV), or just play on the 3,000-foot dog run in the back of the massive space — for $35 a day.

Inside the renovated space at 85 John St., will be a high-end boutique with doggie clothes and toys.

It also boasts a “human lounge” where owners can grab a coffee, use an iPad to check e-mail, and watch their pampered pooches play.

“The dogs are our clients, so all our services are geared to them,” said Lee.

Lee is even planning to offer daily homemade entrees to owners who don”t want their dogs eating commercial pet food. (ANI)

Scooter, the smallest dog, dies

Wellington, Sep 4 (ANI): Claimed to be the smallest dog in the world, Scooter has died at the age of six-months.

The tiny wonder reacted badly to medication, after he broke his leg jumping out of the hands of a minder earlier this week.

The Maltese pup was to try for the official world record upon turning one.

Doctors treating the pup had put his tiny leg in a cast, but the medication he was given for it caused stomach ulcers and he did not survive.

It is claimed that the vets caring for Scooter took him home with them while he was being treated, and even used to get up in the middle of the night to check on him.

“They were amazing, they tried so hard,” Stuff.co.nz quoted owner Cheryl McKnight as saying.

The 8cm tall, 20cm long, pooch is now buried in his shoebox at the bottom of his owner’s Gisborne garden.

McKnight said that she would miss him immensely.

“He was a big part of my life.”

Scooter came from a litter of three and stopped growing before he reached two months.

His weight never exceeded 400 grams, and achieved global fame in his short life, with his picture published in Switzerland, Malaysia, America, Australia, United Kingdom and the Netherlands. (ANI)

World’s oldest dog dies at 21

London, September 1 (ANI): The world’s oldest dog aged 21(147 in dog years) has died of natural causes.

Chanel, a wire-haired dachshund, took its last breath at Long Island at her owner’s home in Port Jefferson Station, a village 50 miles east of New York City.

Guinness World Records had named the pooch the world’s oldest dog in May this year during its 21st birthday party hosted by a pet food company at a Manhattan dog hotel and spa.

Owners Denice and Karl Shaughnessy had brought Chanel home from a pet shelter in Newport News, Virginia, when she was just six weeks old, reports the Daily Express.

Meanwhile, an owner of a dog from Louisiana named Max is now claiming the record for his pet. (ANI)

Meet the dog that survived despite eating 1000 magnets!

Melbourne, Aug 31 (ANI): A dog ate almost 1000 magnets, but is still alive after an emergency surgery.

The X-ray of Polly’s stomach showed a clump of magnets in it, when its owner Cathy James took it to vet Dr. Glen Hastie at Sunbury Animal Hospital, after it fell seriously ill.

The owner of the blue heeler runs a printing business, and had apparently left it alone in her office for 20 minutes to feed horses on her Mickleham farm, when it consumed the magnets.

“One of my jobs is to stick magnets on the back of cards, and after all these years she thought the box of magnets looked just delicious,” the Courier Mail quoted Cathy as saying.

“I came back to do my work, and I noticed her rustling around, and I stuck my hand down (her throat) and pulled them out, and she was fine for the rest of the day.

“The next day she started drastically heaving and four of them came out, and I thought, ‘uh-oh, I think she has eaten a whole lot more’.

“She weighed half a kilo heavier, and the vet said it wouldn’t be that many, but when they operated there was half a gravel track in there as well,” she said.

In the past three years, the pooch has swallowed a computer mouse, gardening gloves, a large rubber band, several rolls of fax paper, and handfuls of gravel.

Also, it has needed 7000 dollars worth of vet treatment during this time. (ANI)

Why Obama’s pet pooch has curly hair

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Using data from Portuguese water dogs – the breed of President Barack Obama’s dog Bo – researchers at the University of Utah have found a gene that gives some members of this dog breed curly hair and others long, wavy hair.

The researchers showed that variations in only three genes account for the seven major types of coat seen in purebred dogs.

The findings also point the way toward understanding complex human diseases caused by multiple genes.

“We were part of a team that found three genes that control 90 percent of the seven coat types that characterize different breeds of purebred dogs,” said K. Gordon Lark, one of 20 co-authors of the study.

“We helped identify the gene that controls curly or wavy coats,” added study co-author Kevin Chase.

The study showed that combinations of various forms of only three genes – named RSPO2, FGF5 and KRT71 – account for seven major coat types in purebred dogs.

The researchers analysed over 1,000 dogs from 80 domestic breeds, and found that RSPO2 is the gene associated with whether or not a dog has a moustache and large eyebrows (known together as “furnishings”).

They also found that FGF5 is linked to whether a dog’s fur is long or short and KRT71 determines if the hair is curly or wavy.

All purebred dogs have the three genes, but the presence or absence of mutant, variant forms of those genes – rather than the ancestral forms inherited from wolves – determines coat types.

They pointed out that curly haired dogs with furnishings – such as the bichon frise breed and some Portuguese water dogs, including President Obama’s dog Bo – have the variant form of all three genes.

Portuguese water dogs come in both curly haired and wavy haired varieties, depending on what form of the KRT71 gene they have.

Chase said that wavy haired Portuguese water dogs fit in the new study’s long hair with furnishings category.

He noted that the KRT71 gene really controls the extent of curl, not curl versus no curl.

The researchers assisted the NIH research by sharing data on Portuguese water dogs, which they have studied for years.

“Our contribution to this paper is data collected on the Portuguese water dog that indicated that keratin genes controlled the amount of curliness. Our data plus other data from the Ostrander group narrowed this down to KRT71,” said Lark.

KRT71 carries the code that produces keratin 71, a structural protein in hair.

However, Lark said that the other two genes involved in determining dog coat types are more interesting in the sense that they produce proteins that regulate a variety of processes in living organisms, not just the kind of coat a dog has.

That makes them relevant to diseases of dogs and humans.

“Dogs share many diseases and other traits with humans. That’s why they were used for many decades so extensively for pharmaceutical and medical-physiological-biochemical testing. Not surprisingly they share much of their genome [genetic blueprint] with humans also,” said Lark.

The study has been published in the journal Science. (ANI)

Clever dogs find food by sniffing other dogs’ breath

London, July 8 (ANI): Dogs can find food by sniffing the snouts of fellow canines, finds a new study.

“They’re scavengers,” New Scientist magazine quoted Clive Wynne, a psychologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville, as saying.

“It would seem to be advantageous for them to pay attention to where another dog finds a titbit and go after it,” she added.

During the study, Marianne Heberlein at the Institute of Zoology in Zurich, Switzerland, left 13 dogs to search for food behind one of four barriers.

As the dogs had been shown where the treat was beforehand, they always went to the same place.

However, Heberlein took away the treat from some of dogs, and they found nothing to eat.

Then both groups of dogs were made to interact with 11 dogs from a second group, none of which knew where the treats were.

The researchers noted that sometimes dogs would sniff each other’s nose.

Each of the dogs from the second group was then allowed to search for food behind the barriers.

The researchers revealed that where the first pooch found food, the second dog tended to visit that corner first- especially if the dog had caught a whiff of the other’s breath.

Heberlein said that that showed that the second dog based its search on whether or not it smelled food on the breath of the first dog. (ANI)

Bo Obama’s official portrait unveiled

Washington, June 20(ANI): The White House has unveiled President Barack Obama’s pet dog Bo’s official portrait.

And besides that a baseball card has been revealed in his name.

Bo, who is also called ‘the first dog’ because of his ownership status, is a Portuguese water dog.

The card shows him sitting politely on the South Lawn of the White House, his pink tongue showing a bit, reports The Politico.

Now, for more amusement, the card also has statistical information of the lucky pooch.

The details carry he was born in Texas, can’t swim, loves tomatoes and that his goal as first dog is to “make friends with foreign dignitaries.” (ANI)

Brit models super bowl for Obama’s pooch on the White House

London, May 29 (ANI): A 41-year-old Brit has created a super bowl for U.S. President Barack Obama’s pet Bo.

Natalie, of Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, crafted the special dog’s bowl at the President’s request.

She was stunned when Obama made an order for the bowl.

Natalie did have a reason to be surprised after the world’s most powerful man ordered one of her non-spill dishes: her idea was earlier rejected by telly’s Dragons’ Den.

She modelled the special dog’s bowl on the White House, and added the name of Obama’s Portuguese waterdog in diamante.

Natalie has won 1million pounds of US sales since the BBC tycoons sent her packing in 2008.

“Dragons you were wrong,” the Sun quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Jennifer Aniston’s pooch sits on director’s chair on new film’s sets

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): Jennifer Aniston’s dog Norman has its own director’s chair on the sets of her new movie.

The ‘Friends’ star is so fond of her pooch that she brings him to set when she is shooting ‘The Baster’, reports the China Daily.

“Norman is important in Jennifer’s life, but the crew is fed up with having to dote on him. Jennifer needs him around all the time and she won’t stand for him being chained up. So the dog has his own chair near the director, and Jennifer also has a doggy masseuse tend to Norman every day,” a source told the National Enquirer magazine.

The 40-year-old actress ensures that Norman is walked three times a day, and is given meals from the actors’ catering van.

The source added: “She even insists that Norman eat with the crew and that he’s fed organic, human-grade food. So Jennifer’s assistant has special plates made up by the caterer with free-range white meat chicken and organic rice. Norman eats healthier and better than most humans.”

Jennifer’s love for the 13-year-old corgi-terrier has always hit headlines, be it for the dog’s 250 dollars a week massages or acupuncture treatments to combat his aching joints. (ANI)

New shipment of stuffed version of Obama’s pooch hit Chicago shelves

Washington, May 14 (ANI): A second shipment of Beanie Babies stuffed toy dog, inspired by U.S. President Barack Obama’s pooch Bo, has arrived at Chicago stores.
Stuffed toy manufacturers Ty Inc. has come out with its Bo the Dog Beanie Babies, which went on sale at Mag Mile apparel store and the 834 N. Michigan Borders bookstore on Tuesday.

In mid-April, Ty had made huge profits after Mag Mile’s initial shipment of the 4.99 dollars toy Bo went off the shelves within hours, in the same week when President Obama introduced America to his family’s newest addition.
Even Borders store, which is among the exclusive retailers for the pup, had received an April shipment of about 25 about 4 p.m. and was sold out by 9 p.m. with purchases limited to one per customer, said managers.

“It wasn’t even necessary to set up a [display] table,” the Chicago Sun-Times quoted employee Dominique Washington as saying.

And this time, there’s also a larger size Ty Bo and a keychain version of the toy modelled on the President’s Portuguese water dog, which come with a couple of friends.

With the new version of Bo Ty has made a second attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the Obama family.

The latest table display included about 35 of the original Bo Beanie Babies 2.0 version (4.99 dollars), about 15 of the larger Ty Classic Bo (9.99 dollars), six of the Bo keychains (2.99 dollars) and six each of the renamed Mariah and Sydney dolls (9.99 dollars), each carrying a pet Bo. (ANI)

Mark Ronson says wearing fur is like wearing a pet dog

New Delhi, May 8 (ANI): Music mogul Marc Ronson has declared that wearing fur is no different from wearing a beloved dog.

The star, who has been named the best-dressed man by GQ magazine, recently posed with his pet pooch in a PETA advert with a tagline “If You Wouldn’t Wear Your Dog, Please Don’t Wear Any Fur”.

The anti-fur campaign was organized by Peta2, the youth arm of the animal rights group, reports the China Daily.

“The only difference between our ‘best friends’ and animals killed for their fur is how we treat them,” PETA Europe Director Robbie LeBlanc said.

“No one knows that better than a sharp dresser like Mark Ronson. With all the fashionable alternatives available, there’s absolutely no excuse for wearing fur,” Robbie added. (ANI)

Michelle Obama’s 5:15 a.m. pet pooch White House walks

Washington, May 1 (ANI): Michelle Obama is having a hard time getting her daughter to fulfil their promises about dog-care.

The First Lady revealed she woke early in the morning to take their six-month-old pooch Bo, a Portugese water dog, for a walk while Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7 were supposed to be doing their bit in raising the mutt.

“I got up at 5:15 a.m. in the morning to walk my puppy,” People magazine quoted her as saying.

“Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I’m still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out.

“So for everyone who has a child asking for a puppy – you have to want the dog. As I do. I love my Bo,” she added.

The better half of the US President further said both the girls were turning out to be promising young ladies.

She added: “The girls are happy and healthy. They love their school. They’re making friends. They’re getting good grades.” (ANI)

The trio of musts that Obamas’ pooch, Bo, needs to learn

Chicago, May 1 (ANI): Experts have come up with the trio of musts that all pooch owners, including the Obamas, need to practice with their pets, namely exercise, affection and obedience.

According to Karen Okura, manager of animal behaviour and training for the Anti-Cruelty Society, US President Barack Obama and his family need to follow a common set of rules to train the six-month old First Dog, Bo.

“The first thing to do when you have a new dog is to establish boundaries and rules on the very first moment the pet enters the home,” The Chicago Sun-Times quoted Karen as saying.

“The whole family needs to speak the same language to the dog and agree on the same set of rules”, Karen added.

Karen continued: “For the Obama family, it appears that a lot of people need to get involved. If you add the servants and Secret Service, I’d estimate about 50 people have to learn the verbal commands.”

Some more tips for new dog owners, like the First Family, from the Anti-Cruelty Society and the Web site www.dogtrainersearch.com include:

1. Making sure the right size of dog toys are given to the pets to avoid choking hazards, and the playthings need to be trashed when on becoming worn or frayed or if they begin to develop holes or sharp edges.

2. Do not let your pooch to bark for longer period of time to prevent it from becoming a habit.

3. A good behaviour needs to be rewarded which would add to its repetition.

4. Aggression towards the dog may lead to reverse-aggression situation from the pet, who would want to defend itself.

5. Let your mutt know who is the boss by showing leadership. (ANI)

Bo, the First Dog, loves to chew people’s feet: Michelle Obama

New York, Apr 24 (ANI): The Obamas’ new Portuguese water dog, Bo, can’t get enough of other people’s feet, according to First Lady Michelle Obama.

Michelle spoke about the dog’s foot fetish on April 23, to kids visiting the White House for the annual “Take Your Child To Work Day”.

“Oh, he is a crazy dog,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.

“You know, he loves to chew on people’s feet,” she said.

The First Lady also revealed that the 6-month-old pooch, which is a gift to First Daughters Malia and Sasha from Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), has been taking up a lot of her time, and keeping her up at night.

“I’ll tell you a story about Bo last night,” she told the kids.

“It was like 10 p.m. at night, everybody was asleep, and we hear all this barking and jumping around, and the President and I came out and we thought somebody was out there. And it was just Bo.

“He was playing with his ball. And it was like there was another person in the house.

“He’s kind of crazy. But he’s still a puppy, so he likes to play a lot,” she added. (ANI)

Paris Hilton shows off her ‘puppies’ for Guess!

London, April 21 (ANI): Paris Hilton has posed with her pet pooch in a series of saucy shots for Guess 2009 spring/summer collection.

The chihuahua sat next to the hotel heiress while she modelled in a gold bikini, reports the Sun.

In a separate shot, the pooch was placed between the reality star’s legs.

Meanwhile, the wine brand ‘Rich Prosecco’, which created ripples with its ultra-modern advert featuring a naked Hilton covered in gold paint, is failing to meet sales targets.
Multifarious batches of the wine are rotting in warehouses around the world.
The wine company is also facing a legal showdown with Italian vintners over the use of the name ‘Prosecco’. (ANI)

Here’s how Obama’s pooch can cause havoc in his Oval Office!

New York, April 16 (ANI): Besides dealing with world problems, US President Barack Obama now has more reasons to lose sleep over, which include how to keep the First Dog from wrecking his Oval Office.

The First Family recently let Bo, a six-month-old Portuguese water dog, paw into their home and live.

The first-time dog owners had been ecstatic with the new family member but the playful mutt could prove to be quite a handful than the Obamas had originally imagined for local breeders have few things to warn about.

While the idea of having clean White House bathrooms could just go for a toss, leaving important documents around was also a big no.

Pulling doors open, shredding paper and turning on water faucets may also be few other things on the First Dog’s mind, reports the New York Daily News.

Now, the breeders and owners have prepared a list of both Do’s and Don’ts to keep in mind while raising Portuguese water dogs, some which are as follows.

Don’ts

Leave things on the counter – Patricia Joaquin of Clearwater Kennel in Levittown, L.I, warned Portuguese water dogs (PWD) loved to jump on counters, saying: “It’s called counter surfing. You walk in the kitchen, and the meat has been removed from your sandwich.”

Forget to brush up – Joaquin insisted upon the necessity to groom the hounds, adding: “Like human hair, it keeps growing and growing, and if you don’t brush it out, it mats up.”

Dos

Be prepared – Breeder Lisa Wiley of Turnabout Portuguese Water Dogs said: “They go to the bathroom with you. They want to play with you” while Joaquin added: “They are lap dogs, even if they are 35 pounds. They stick to you.”

Bear in mind they are watchdogs – Wiley cautioned: “With people walking in and out, you’re likely to have a dog bite someone. A lot of people think that just because (PWDs) are cute, they won’t protect – they can.” (ANI)
