UPDATE 1-Melexis increases guidance after Q2 beats hopes

BRUSSELS, July 29 (Reuters) – Belgium’s Melexis (MLXS.BR) said it now expects sales to increase by 60 percent for the full-year as it sees increased demand for its microchips, which make cars more environmentally friendly.

The company, which designs and tests chips, said it had experienced its highest ever quarterly sales and its market had yet to reach its peak.

“Ramping up production output so much faster than anticipated was a substantial challenge,” Chief Executive Francoise Chombar said in a statement on Thursday.

Melexis said net income for the second quarter was 12.1 million euros ($15.75 million), beating 8.50 million expected by four analysts polled by Reuters.

It said revenue for the quarter was 55.8 million euros, beating 49.6 million expected in the poll.

When it announced its first quarter results in April it forecast that revenues would rise by over a third. [ID:nLDE63K13Z] (Reporting by Ben Deighton; Editing by Mike Nesbit) ($1=.7684 euro)

Shiseido cuts forecast by 5 pct on acquisition costs

June 8 (Reuters) – Shiseido Co Ltd (4911.T), Japan’s largest cosmetics firm, on Tuesday cut its annual operating profit forecast by about 5 percent to reflect costs related to its acquisition of U.S. firm Bare Escentuals.

Non-Cyclical Consumer Goods

Shiseido bought the U.S. cosmetics company in March for $1.7 billion as part of an effort to expand overseas, but the firm’s forecast for this financial year issued in April did not factor in the acquisition.

The maker of “Tsubaki” shampoo and the “Maquillage” line of makeup now expects an operating profit of 50.5 billion yen ($552 million) for the year ending in March 2011, down from 53 billion yen in its previous forecast. [ID:nT840S5T8T]

The figure is below a mean estimate of 57.1 billion yen in a poll of 11 analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shiseido said the downward revision came as it plans to book some costs in connection with the acquisition, including 4 billion yen in goodwill amortisation.

Shares of Shiseido were up 2.6 percent at 1,802 yen, outperforming a 0.4 percent gain in the Nikkei average .N225. ($1=91.47 Yen) (Reporting by Taiga Uranaka; Editing by Chris Gallagher)

One in five men ‘hates doing DIY’

London, May 16 (ANI): One in five men hates doing DIY, according to a new study.

Despite traditionally being seen as a man”s job, the fear of failure puts off two out of five men, while a similar number claimed they don’t have enough time.

In the poll of 1,000 adults, a third said DIY was too time-consuming and one in five said they didn”t do it because they had no idea what they were doing. Another 21 per cent admitted they were simply too lazy.

“There was a time when almost every man would love nothing more than heading down to his shed to make something, or indulge in a spot of DIY around the home. But it seems this is no longer the case as a large number of men now see it as a chore rather than a hobby,” the Daily Mail quoted Chris Tidy, DIY expert for Bosch, as saying.

Of those who like to indulge in DIY, 45 per cent said it filled them with pride. A further 26 per cent used it to express their creativity.

More than a quarter liked the feeling they got after creating something unique.

On the other hand, it was found that one in four women actually enjoy a spot of handiwork around the home. (ANI)

Woods” former swing coach dismisses PED intake reports

New York, May 14 (ANI): Tiger Woods” former swing coach Hank Haney has dismissed reports that claim the golfer’s successful career can be credited to performance-enhancing drugs.

Haney insisted that Woods has never used PED.

“I truly believe those (rumors) are 100 percent false. People that say otherwise are just starting rumors. It”s based on no facts at all,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

A recent Sports Illustrated poll found that 24 percent of PGA Tour players surveyed believed Woods had taken PEDs.

Haney said: “There”s a lot of jealousy out there and people will say things but I will just tell you that I spent 110 days a year with Tiger for six years. I spent probably 40 to 50 nights a year at his house. I”ve never seen him do anything. He”s never talked about anything.”

He further added that he was present for four of the five times that controversial Dr. Anthony Galea, who is under a federal investigation for PEDs, treated Woods with a legal blood spinning technique.

He said: “I was there and watched the whole procedure. There was never anything that went into Tiger Woods” body that didn”t come out of his body. They take blood out, they spin it, they inject the plasma back in. I totally believe that Tiger Woods has never taken any performance-enhancing drugs.”

Haney coached Woods for six-years before resigning earlier this week. (ANI)

Football World Cup gives Brit men ‘excuse’ to set up a ‘den’

London, May 4 (ANI): Thousands of male football fans in Britain will spend 460 pounds each on creating luxury ‘dens’ ahead of this summer”s World Cup in South Africa, according to new research.

According to the survey, nearly a third of British males already have their own area fitted with home entertainment gadgets or equipment for hobbies such as a dart board or pool table.

Research for Halifax found that 4 percent of men without a ‘den’ have plans to set up one for the upcoming football tournament.

“The impending World Cup finals have given men the excuse they need to create luxury lads-only areas in their homes. This new generation of male-only dens provide a comfortable space for men to enjoy the football or construct that train set they”ve always wanted,” the Independent quoted Martyn Foulds, from the bank, as saying.

The research suggested that the average spend on either creating a den or upgrading the existing area would be 462 pounds.

Half of Brit kids ”have never been read a bedtime story”: Survey

London, April 30 (ANI): A new British survey conducted on teachers has revealed that more than half of the students of their class have never been read a bedtime story.

Researchers believe that not telling stories to children at home hampers their writing abilities, reports The Scotsman.

Poll statistics revealed that 55.7 per cent of primary school teachers have taught children who have never been read a bedtime story in their homes.

The Oxford University Press survey of 300 teachers also came to the conclusion that 72 per cent of the teachers believed that primary pupils were less able to tell stories than ten years ago.

“To develop children as writers, reading is absolutely essential. Every teacher knows the best writers, the most proficient writers, are always readers,” literary expert and former primary head teacher Pie Corbett said.

“It not only gives children language, it develops their imaginations. Storytelling is also hugely important, as the ability to tell a story is developed by building up a bank of well-known tales to draw upon,” Corbett added.

“Narrative is a necessary, primary act of mind and natural to all human beings – we are all story-makers whether we like it or not,” Corbett informed. (ANI)

Cheated women take revenge by smashing partners’ cars

New York, Apr 28 (ANI): Women are more likely than men to seek revenge if they found out their partner was cheating on them, with 10 percent of angered females targeting their man”s motor, a poll has found.

The poll of 3,000 people by the Autoglass company found that three in every five people would seek revenge if their partners cheated on them.

Of those who decide to get even, 22- to 25-year-olds are the most likely to smash a car windshield, reports The New York Daily News.

“Our research clearly shows that in the UK most people won’t turn the other cheek when it comes to infidelity,” Autoglass managing director Nigel Doggett said, according to the Independent. “And as the car seems to be one of the prime targets for getting even, this poll should serve as a warning to anyone thinking of straying.”

Social worker Irina Firstein said: “When a spouse has an affair, it is a rejection and a betrayal of the promise or agreement that it implicit in a marriage or a committed relationship. We have notions about what is fair and not fair, and this is not fair in our minds. The impulse for revenge often translates into an action, which of course means hurting the other person.”

And as to why trash the cheater’s car, Firstein said: “It’s like kicking a guy in his privates.” (ANI)

Eight of ten Americans trust in big government near historic low

Washington, Apr. 19 (ANI): Eight out of ten Americans say they can”t trust Washington and they have little faith that the massive federal bureaucracy can solve the nation”s ills.

According to a Pew Research Center survey, the poll released Sunday illustrates an ominous situation facing President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party as they struggle to maintain their comfortable congressional majorities in this fall”s elections.

The survey found that just 22 percent of those questioned say they can trust Washington almost always or most of the time and just 19 percent say they are basically content with it. Nearly half say the government negatively effects their daily lives, a sentiment that”s grown over the past dozen years.

Majorities in the survey call Washington too big and too powerful, and say it”s interfering too much in state and local matters.

The public is split over whether the government should be responsible for dealing with critical problems or scaled back to reduce its power, presumably in favor of personal responsibility.

About half say they want a smaller government with fewer services, compared with roughly 40 percent who want a bigger government providing more.

The public was evenly divided on those questions long before Obama was elected.

The poll was based on four surveys done from March 11 to April 11 on landline and cell phones. The largest survey, of 2,500 adults, has a margin of sampling error of 2.5 percentage points; the others, of about 1,000 adults each, has a margin of sampling error of 4 percentage points. (ANI)
