‘Ugly freaks’ Facebook comment lands Oz politician’s wife in trouble

Sydney, June 04 (ANI): Townsville Deputy Mayor David Crisafulli’s wife irked locals of Mackay, Queensland by commenting on their looks on Facebook.

Tegan Crisafulli had written that she found only “ugly people” and “freaks” during a horse-racing event in the town.

Crisafulli, who is married to David Crisafulli, deputy mayor of Townsville, 390 kilometres away, wrote: “I still can”t believe how many freaks were there.

“I”ve never seen so many ugly people in the same place at the same time … I wonder if I”d get into trouble if I posted to FB [Facebook] my ”I”m the ugliest person to photograph” pics from the day.”

Mackay race club”s president Kerry Woodman blamed Crisafulli for looking at the crowd through “beer goggles”.

Meanwhile, reigning Miss Turf Girl Brooke Thompson disagreed with the leader’s spouse, saying there were “plenty of good-looking people” present.

“Beauty is not just on the outside, it also comes from the inside,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted her as telling the Mackay Mercury newspaper.

Crisafulli”s defended his wife saying it was just a “light-hearted” comment.

He said: “She wakes up beside me every morning and my head is rougher than anything I saw on that day.”

Tegan has deleted her page on Facebook, but a group titled “Beautiful People of Mackay Speak Out Against Tegan Crisafulli!” is still protesting on the site. (ANI)

Jaya snubs SP, sides with Amar

New Delhi, May 28 — Actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan on Friday snubbed the Samajwadi Party (SP) by declining its offer for a Rajya Sabha seat, barely two days after the party appeared to have weaned her away from old friend, Amar Singh. A stunned SP leadership confirmed that Jaya informed them about her decision “to take a break from politics”, in a move being seen as a victory for Singh, who was expelled from the party in February. Top SP leaders, including party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, were at a loss of words to explain why the actress was nominated for the Upper House, given her close ties with Amar Singh. Asked by reporters in Lucknow whether Jaya’s husband, Amitabh could be behind her decision, a disappointed Yadav replied : “Amitabh Bachchan has never liked politics. He was elected for the Lok Sabha but after a brief period, he resigned from there.” Indications of SP having miscalculated the situation came in the form of Jaya’s silence following the announcement on Wednesday. Her renomination to Rajya Sabha was being seen as a reward by the party for not siding with Singh, after his expulsion. However, the Bachchan family’s decision not to desert their decades-old family friend Singh appeared to be a result of the meeting between Amitabh and Singh in Mumbai on Thursday. There were reports of relations being strained between the two recently, after Singh made his displeasure public on Jaya’s continuation in the SP.

Having lost out in this round, the SP hurriedly announced party spokesperson Mohan Singh’s name in Jaya’s place, a known Amar Singh baiter.

Jaya Ho, says SP for Amar snub

Lucknow, May 27 — The Samajwadi Party (SP) sprang a surprise on Wednesday by re-nominating actress-turned politician Jaya Bachchan for next month’s Rajya Sabha elections from UP. The move is likely to further alienate former SP leader Amar Singh, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s one-time close aide. Singh was forced to leave the party, along with actress Jayaprada, in February. The announcement also reflects the changed equations between Singh and the Bach-chan family. Singh used to call himself the younger brother of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya’s superstar husband. He often stated the Bachchans were like family to him. When Singh left the SP, it was widely speculated Jaya would also go with him. But she remained with the SP, raising eyebrows. Jaya did support her political mentor in the days before he finally left the SP, but distanced herself later. In March, at a rally of Thakurs in New Delhi, Singh criticised her for staying with the party. This widened the rift between him and the Bachchans further.

Masood’s nomination is aimed at placating Muslim voters, who had deserted the SP when Yadav cosied up to his bete noire and former BJP leader Kalyan Singh in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

US politician caught plagiarising Obama speech

London, May 26 (IANS) A Republican congressional candidate has been accused of plagiarising US President Barack Obama’s speech on ‘the crossroads of history’.

Vaughn Ward, a former US Marine Corps officer and CIA operative, was running for the Republican congressional nomination in an election held Tuesday in Idaho.

The Telegraph reported Wednesday that Lucas Baumbach, a local party activist, tracked down a YouTube video that showed a strong similarity between Ward’s speech in January and Obama’s address to the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Obama said: ‘We stand on the crossroads of history. We can make the right choices and meet the challenges that face us.’

Ward said: ‘As we stand on the crossroads of history, I know we can make the right choices and meet the challenges that lay before us.’

There were a few more striking similarities between the two speeches.

Ward’s spokesperson, however, said: ‘Folks are getting desperate-they’re saying anything to get Vaughn to go after him. If anyone thinks he’s anything like Obama, they’re dead wrong.’

Kiwi politician’s hidden camera sex scam

Wellington, May 16 (ANI): A former New Zealand mayoral candidate Pat Norris, accused of publishing a sex video he made of a woman staying at a house he owned, has defended himself saying he did what any other “red-blooded male” would have done.

The Nelson resident who contested the Kawerau mayoralty three years ago had allegedly pretended to fit motion sensors, when he installed cameras in the house.

The woman claimed he fitted one in the lounge, one in the kitchen, one in the dining room and one in her bedroom.

Police revealed that the cameras were set up in a way that allowed Norris to view the inside of the house in “real time” at “any time”.

“What he did was like physical abuse or worse. It”s a violation,” the New Zealand Herald quoted the woman, whose identity hasn’t been revealed, as saying.

However, Norris justified himself saying that the cameras were there to protect his investment in case it was broken into, not to spy on the woman.

He further asserted that he had printed them because the woman was sleeping with a married man whose wife had a right to see the images.

Norris, 53, is believed to be the first person charged with publishing material under anti-covert-filming laws brought in about five years ago.

He said he thought the new law was about “people using mobile phones in an up-skirt or down-blouse peeping toms scenario”.

He faces four charges of publishing an intimate visual recording and one of intentionally making an intimate visual recording. (ANI)

Malay-Indian MP receives death threats for highlighting corruption in sand-mining project

Kuala Lumpur, May 16 (ANI): An Indian-origin MP in Malaysia has received death threats for alleging that there is corruption in the running of government owned sand mining companies.

S. Manikavasagam found his wife’s car splashed with red-paint at his home in Meru.

Three bags containing red paint were hurled into his house, one of them had a warning attached to it, in an A4 sized paper that said, “Jangan campur issue pasir. You mati.” (Don”t get involved in the sand mining issue. You will die.)

He ascertained that the bags must have been thrown after 4 in the morning, as this was the time his mother-in-law retired for the night, The Star reports.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat politician has received such threats on the telephone prior to this incident also. (ANI)

Political spin checklist

You can’t yet be sure which Saturday this year you’ll be going to the polls, but you can guarantee the campaign behind it will be full of spin.

Hundreds and hundreds of journalists are employed by governments across Australia; their brief is to ensure the bosses’ policies are seen in the best possible light.

That means all sorts of underhand tricks are now part and parcel of the political process, and many politicians still don’t think voters are onto them.

To ensure you are, here’s a quick spin checklist you might want to use for the next poll. Feel free to add your own.

* The mea culpa: Perfected by Queensland’s Peter Beattie, the politician will take full responsibility for a bad decision, promise that “heads will roll” and that it will be fixed. They will then hope the issue disappears, and is not raised again.
* The diversionary tactic: Announce something to divert attention away from something less politically palatable. For example, a major new cigarette branding initiative could take attention off a delayed emissions trading scheme promise. Or a state government, reeling from a health crisis where nurses and doctors aren’t being paid, capitulate and announce a review of daylight saving, by Twitter. You’re likely to find examples like these every week, in all levels of government.
* It’s all in the language: Whether it’s the Working Family or WorkChoices, so much depends on the words chosen.
* The greed card: This is played when a politician tries to make us feel bad that we might not be carrying our share of the burden. Example: miners make too much money, they’re foreign, and you miss out.
* The missing transcript: Politicians often put a transcript of their interviews on the internet, or hand them out so that they can be re-quoted by other organisations. Unless of course the interview goes badly. Then sometimes, the transcript just seems to disappear.
* Pick your day syndrome: This is widely played by politicians from all parties – from Kevin Rudd focusing on media appearances more commonly at the end of the week (when polling companies are in the field) to the release of bad news (often on a Friday night) or good news on Sundays and public holidays when there is less competition to head the bulletin. The release of the Henry report is another example. Despite it not being market sensitive, it was cloaked in a secret Sunday lock-up – something the Government’s response certainly didn’t justify.
* It’s not personal, it’s just me: All politicians have their own little ways to help them sell their message, from the tie they pick to the magazine they choose to spill the beans. It goes further than that too. Former prime minister John Howard often breathed mid-sentence which made getting a question in difficult; Kevin Rudd often asks – and then answers – his own questions.
* Tell the partial truth This happens often. You ask a question and a specific answer is given, but not the whole answer. A recent Queensland example involves the death of a toddler after the flu vaccine. After dozens of cases of ill children in Western Australia, the Queensland Government denied there were any cases in Queensland. When it was caught out, a minister explained they were not officially told of the death, and it was too early to tell whether it was a result of the flu vaccine.
* Blame the public servant: This is an increasing spin mechanism, where a government will put up a public servant, rather than the minister, to answer questions. That means the bad press is directed at the public service, not the Government.
* The drip feed: You’ll hear part of what a health or police or education package will be today, more next week, and certainly more come election time. Why deliver the one big package which would show you the big picture, when there can be three bites of the cherry? A twist on this is the half report, where a minister will leak part of a document which shows a government in good light. A good journalist should always ask for the full report, because it’s likely the second half will have something damaging to the government.
* Saved by the review: Used by all parties, the “send it to a review” technique gets it out of the public debate. This means any issue that is too hard to deal with can be subject to a review or an inquiry, until it’s raised again, or at least until after the election.
* The picture opportunity: John Howard out walking. Tony Abbott in lycra. Your local politician on the front page of the paper, shirts rolled up, serving soup at a homeless kitchen. Often, it’s just staged, but it certainly can change how you perceive them.
* The human touch: A variation on the above, with the best example highlighted by former treasurer Peter Costello’s macarena dance on daytime TV. You’ll see a lot more of this in coming weeks, when politicians drag out whole families to colour their image.
* The social media blitz: Do you really think all politicians are doing their own twittering? Sure some are, but others have no idea who they’re following, as evidenced by revelations the Prime Minister is following a porn star.
* The phony sacking: No government wants to give an Opposition a ministerial notch on their belt, so the phony sacking allows responsibility to be removed from a minister, without them being removed. Remember Peter Garrett?

The list could go on, and perhaps you can list your own examples. If for no other reason, it will alert politicians that voters are now canny enough to see announcements through the spin of listening tours, reviews and promises – and make their judgment accordingly.

Tony Blair offered £250k to appear on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

London, May 3 (ANI): Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been offered 250,000 pounds to appear on reality TV show ‘Dancing With the Stars’.

Executive producer of the American Strictly, Conrad Green, wants the British Labour politician to appear on the show.

“Tony, you”ve done everything you can do as PM, you”ve done your bit for the Middle East, now come and put some sequins on and have a real life,” The Mirror quoted Green as saying.

Parti Punjabi Malaysia elects first woman president

Kuala Lumpur, May 3 (ANI): Dr Susheel Kaur has become the first woman to be elected as president of the 24 year-old Parti Punjabui Malaysia (PPM).

She was elected unopposed by more than 50 delegates at the party”s biennial general meeting.

A highly qualified lady, Dr Kaur did her Ph D in population geography from Chandigarh University. She has also majored in social impact studies and hopes to use her academic expertise in her new role as Parti President.

She told the New Strait Times that she did not see herself as a politician but felt responsible for the PPM since her father was its founder.

She succeeds cousin Dr Gurdeep Perkash Singh, he has been the PPM President for ten years.

Dr Kaur admitted that the party did not stand on equal ground when compared to other Malay-Indian parties but hopes to change that.

According to Dr Kaur, the reason behind this disparity is because the PPM has failed to gain entry into the ruling coalition, Barison Nasional.

“We have been trying to do this for over 10 years now. Not fewer than six applications were submitted, but all went unanswered. In fact, our latest application was made on February 2. We are still waiting for an answer,” she said.

She added that it was an open secret that an Indian-based party within the BN coalition had opposed the PPM joining the ruling coalition. (ANI)

Arnie denies ‘fluffer” job claim

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has dismissed reports that he once worked as a “fluffer” on the sets of pornographic films.

The Austrian-born actor and politician had made a joke during an interview that it had been his worst ever job.

However, a spokesman for Schwarzenegger denied the claims, insisting that the 62-year-old had been joking, reports The Telegraph.

The rep asserted that Schwarzenegger was speaking hypothetically, naming the task – which involves arousing male porn stars before a performance – as the worst job possible.

The governor’s remarks came during an interview with James Lipton at Chelsea Piers in New York.

The New York Post reported that when asked what his favourite job was, the Terminator star said: “English teacher.”

Lipton then asked: “Least favourite job?” to which Schwarzenegger replied: “Fluffer.” (ANI)

Stress making Barack Obama grey-haired ‘Barack Old-bama’

London, Apr 29 (ANI): Barack Obama is so much under stress since he took office in 2009 that he has now become President ‘Old-bama’ with grey hair.

The US President revealed the strain of office by showing off his grey hair recently.

And his salt-and-pepper look was in stark contrast to the dark locks he had when he moved into the White House just last year.

And the 48-year-old politician shocked supporters in Iowa with his silver barnet.

“It was more like Barack Old-bama than Barack Obama. I couldn”t believe the change,” the Sun quoted one supporter as saying.

Last year there was speculation that the President had been dyeing his hair to win over voters, but his barber denied it. (ANI)

Malaysian politician questions effectiveness of religious raids

Kuantan, Apr 27 (ANI): In the wake of the shocking suicide by a Malay teenager, who flung himself off the fifth floor in a bid to evade officers conducting religious raids, Malaysian politician Adnan Yaakob has questioned the effectiveness of such exercises.

He believes that were the people targeted by these raids alive, they would at least have a chance of reforming themselves and adopting a lifestyle that upholds Islamic values.

“I think it is better to give them guidance rather than raiding a place. Raids will cause the person to panic and do something irrational like jumping off a building,” Adnan told the State Assembly at Kuantan, The Star reports.

He also raised the issue of teenage suicides caused by depression and urged teachers to be more observant and counsel those susceptible. (ANI)

Eliot Spitzer should run for office again, says Ashley Dupre

Washington, Apr 23 (ANI): Ashley Dupre, the infamous call girl who led to former New York governor Eliot Spitzer’s downfall, has said that the politician should run for office again.

Spitzer had to resign from his office after it was exposed that he met for over two hours with Dupre- the 1,000dollars-an-hour call girl and current Playboy cover girl.

But now, Dupre wants that Spitzer should be given a second chance to run for office.

“Let him run and let the people decide. Give him a fair shot. Everyone deserves a shot, right?” Fox News quoted her as saying.

However, she won’t be voting for her former trick.

“I take responsibility for being involved in it in some way. [But Silda] married a scumbag. He’s the one that made an agreement with her and made a promise, and he broke that promise,” she said.

Dupre also said she felt sorry for the long line of mistresses that have come forward in the Tiger Woods and Jesse James infidelity scandals.

“These girls are coming forward and I don’t think they understand the impact that its having, … for themselves and their future.
