Too premature to comment on attack on Sri Sri: Police

Police have said it is too early to comment on the attack on Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar and stated they are looking into all aspects of the incident.

“It is too premature to comment right away,” IGP Central Range, Kamal Panth told reporters here.

He said police have begun investigations. A police team and forensic experts are conducting examinations and their reports have to be awaited before arriving at any conclusion, he said.

Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar yesterday escaped bid on his life when an unidentified gunman shot at his car when he was returning after delivering a discourse, an ashram official said.

“We are looking into all aspects,” Panth said and added that the ashram members had provided information on the incident.

He said security measures have been beefed up. “Yes we have strengthened security”.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Ramanagaram district) Deveraj said an unidentified person fired a round at the convoy when Sri Sri Ravishankar was leaving after satsang in his ashram last evening. The injured devotee was discharged after first aid at a local hospital, he said.

Deveraj said the whole area has been cordoned off. “We have closed all entry points and have begun combing operation inside the premises. The identity of the person is yet to be ascertained,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya confirmed Sri Sri Ravishankar was safe and a thorough investigation would be carried out.

One of his devotees sustained a minor injury on the thigh with the bullet brushing past.

The incident took place around 6.15 PM when Ravishankar was returning to his ‘Kutir’ by car after addressing a gathering at the ‘Satsang’

“I am absolutely safe,” 54-year-old Sri Sri Ravishankar said shortly after the incident.

Sri Sri Ravishankar, who has a wide following all over the country and abroad, where he has set up centres of his organisation, said he had gone ahead with his discourse even after the incident. He said he would convene a press meet today in this regard.

The spiritual guru told a TV channel that he had not received any threat earlier.

Sri Sri Ravishankar has popularised ‘Sudarshan Kriya’, a powerful breathing technique in India and overseas.

Ashram spokesperson Charu said the incident came to light only after the spiritual leader shared it with his followers during a satsang scheduled around 7 PM.

“We were not aware of it (shooting) till he shared it with us,” she said.

There was a huge crowd when the incident occurred and this could possibly be the reason why it was not immediately noticed and the unidentified man remained untraced, she said.

Wadala police face heat over kidnappings

Mumbai, May 29 — More than 250 locals surrounded Wadala police station on Friday to protest police inaction in the kidnap of two minor girls 20 days ago. Firoz A, one of the girls’ father said 20 days ago, his 14-year-old daughter and her 15-year-old friend went missing from their respective houses. “We lodged a missing complaint at Wadala police station but when the police enquired in the area and found two local boys also missing, they registered a case of kidnapping against the two 22-year-old boys,” said Firoz. “The police investigated and found the four were in Uttar Pradesh. A police team went there to arrest the boys and bring back our girls but returned empty-handed,” he said at the police station, where he was present with the locals. “It’s hard to believe a police team went to UP but couldn’t even get pictures of the boys. I’m afraid that if the police do not arrest the boys soon, they will kill my daughter and her friend, Ruchi Sharma,” he said. “If the children have eloped, the police should at least tell us,” he added. The alleged kidnappers, identified as Mumtaz (22) and Parvez (23), lived in the same area as the girls and worked as daily wage labourers. Vilas Shinde, senior police inspector at Wadala police station, said the couples had eloped and the girls had taken cash and jewellery from their houses, and said police are charging them with kidnapping because they are minors.

Asked about fresh efforts to locate the girls, Shinde said: “We’ve sent messages to police stations in the neighbouring areas of UP. In Mumbai too, we’ve sent wireless messages to all police stations, railway stations and bus stands.”

Coastal security beefed up in Kerala

Kochi (Kerala), May 16 (ANI): The coastal security in Kerala has been increased with the state police inducting high-speed boats to patrol the shoreline and backwaters.

A fleet of around 47 boats along with a specially trained police team has been deployed for the purpose.

The 6.8-metre-long boats can be controlled by a remote device and seat up to six policemen.

A colourful regatta ceremony in the backwaters of Kochi district marked the launch of the new service.

“Backwater security is an integral part of coastal security as far as we are concerned. With that perception, we are trying to implement the scheme throughout the length of Kerala. High-speed boats patrol the waterways constantly so that any interlocutor or somebody, who has intercepted or somebody, who has escaped into the backwaters, we are able to chase him and we are able to catch him,” said Kerala Director-General of Police Jacob Punnoose.

“This will also ensure that along the waterways, which a large number of tourists and common people use, crime, which is becoming a problem will also be addressed by the police. These boats will be used in a consultant manner to prevent such activities,” he added.

Eight new coastal police stations are expected to be fully functional within the next three months in Kerala.

India has initiated several measures to beef security all along its over 7,500 kilometers long coast in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. (ANI)

J-K police rescues child from inter-state kidnappers’ gang of Kanpur

Srinagar, June 28 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir police team from Sopore in the State’s Baramulla district has rescued a kidnapped child from the clutches of an inter-state gang of kidnappers of Kanpur within three days of the incident.

The incident was brought to the notice of police on June 22 when a local resident Habibullah Mir informed the police authorities at night that his five-year-old son had been kidnapped by one Ajay Kumar of Kanpur, who had been staying in Bulgam village, posing as a labourer.

On enquiry, it was learnt that the alleged kidnapper Ajay Paul, a resident of Kanpur, had been staying in the village Bulgam as a labourer, close to the house of Habibullah Mir. He had developed closeness with Mir’s family including his son Adnan Habib.

On June 22, Ajay Paul lured the child for buying his some fruit and kidnapped him. But when the child did not return home till evening, his parents and relatives reported the matter to the Police.

The kidnapping of the child by someone from outside the State caused big resentment among local residents in Bulgam and adjoining areas. Police sought public cooperation for the investigating team.

Taking prompt action into the matter, a Police team was immediately rushed to Jammu on the following day (June 23). Also, an alert message was sent to Railway Police at national level anticipating that the kidnapper might have gone to his native place in Kanpur boarding some train.

But, in the meanwhile, the kidnapper called up the child’s father Habibullah Mir and demanded a ransom of 500,000 rupees. The telephone calls gave important leads to the Police, which discovered he was calling from Jalandhar, Panipat and finally in Kanpur.

A police team was sent to Kanpur.

Subsequently SSP Baramulla got in touch with senior Police Officers in Kanpur and shared all the relevant information including telephone number of the kidnapper with the Kanpur Police.

The police party, after reaching Kanpur, managed to recover the kidnapped child Adnan on June 26 with the help of Kanpur Police and also arrested the kidnapper Ajay Paul.

Leads provided by the Jammu and Kashmir police revealed that Ajay actually belonged to a gang of kidnappers, other members of which have also been reportedly arrested by Kanpur Police along with some arms and ammunition.

The police team from Sopore was on its way back to Bulgam Sopore to hand over the child to his parents, stated a press release. (ANI)

Two separatist rebels killed in Indian Kashmir

Srinagar, Kashmir – Two militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba group and their female associate were killed in a shootout with security forces in India-administered Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The combat took place near a village in the Doda district about 180 kilometres north-east of the state’s winter capital Jammu, after a joint army-police team started search operations.

“The two militants were active in the area and were behind many killings and abductions. They were eliminated in the gunbattle which lasted for an hour,” senior police official Parbhat Singh said.

A woman who was with the militants and was believed to be linked with the LeT was also killed.

According to Indian intelligence agencies, rebels are planning to increase the levels of violence in the region as the nationwide elections get underway.

The disputed Kashmir region is divided into two parts, one administered by India the other by Pakistan. The neighbours have fought two wars over the disputed region.

More than 45,000 people have died in violence since violent secessionist militant movement emerged in the 1980s.

India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of aiding Kashmiri militants. Islamabad denies the charge, calling the insurgents freedom fighters. (dpa)

Runaway Jammu and Kashmir couple in trouble again

New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) After being threatened by relatives for their inter-faith marriage, a runaway Jammu and Kashmir couple under police protection is in trouble again. The woman’s father now claims she was married to someone else earlier.

Anjum, 19, a Muslim, and Khemraj, 24, a Hindu, had eloped to Delhi. The Jammu and Kashmir police came chasing them last month after Anjum’s father Mohammed Hussain complained that she had been kidnapped. The couple sought protection from the Delhi High Court, which ordered the police here to ensure their safety and their presence in Delhi.

Now Hussain has alleged in the court that Anjum had married Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Inspector Zahid Ali in December last year.

Hussain claimed that Anjum signed the Nikahnama in English herself. He submitted the document – which is a marriage contract under Islamic law – to the court through his lawyer R.K. Poswal.

Refuting Hussain’s allegation, Anjum’s lawyer Colin Gonsalves said that her signature was forged. He sought time to file a detailed reply.

The hearing will resume April 21.

The case came to public attention after the Jammu and Kashmir police team arrived on the basis of the kidnapping complaint filled by Hussain March 21. Anjum’s parents, together with the policemen, barged into a south Delhi hostel where she and her husband were staying and allegedly manhandled her. They had traced her through her mobile phone calls.

Khemraj is from Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir while Anjum is from Nagrota. She is a second-year undergraduate. Her father works for the state government. According to Jammu and Kashmir police, they are related to a legislator in Jammu.

Khemraj, son of a retired army captain, is studying for a master’s degree in commerce.

Lalgarh’s tribal agitators threaten to resist police action

Kolkata, April 5 (IANS) People from Lalgarh will put up mass resistance if security forces tried to enter the area, their top leader said here Sunday, a day after the West Bengal government said it will soon announce a plan to enable the police enter the tribal-dominated region.

‘We will not allow the police or the central paramilitary forces to enter Lalgarh. If they try to forcibly enter, we will form mass resistance groups to stop the police,’ said Chatradhar Mahato, leader of the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) formed by the agitating tribals.

‘If we allow the police or the paramilitary forces, then Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) hooligans will sneak into Lalgarh in the disguise of the security forces,’ Mahato alleged in a media meet at the Calcutta Press Club here.

He said the residents of Lalgarh in West Midnapore district could not move freely in the area when the police established a reign of terror. ‘Now, there is no police team and we can move around freely. And there are no disturbances.’

Asked how the administrative offices were functioning in the absence of the police, Mahatato said: ‘Both panchayat and the block development office are working fine.’

The PCAPA has already put up two check-posts at Raigarh and Barotelia to prevent the police and activists of the CPI-M, the state’s main ruling party, from entering the area.

For conducting the Lok Sabha polls, Mahato said, the Election Commission representatives should approach the PCAPA, which would provide security to all polling personnel.

‘We want the polls, but not the police or the paramilitary forces in our area,’ he reiterated.

In a warning to the state government, the tribal leader said: ‘We don’t want another Nandigram. But if the government tries to use force, it will be responsible for the consequences.’

State Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said Saturday that the government would announce within a week a comprehensive plan of action for Lalgarh.

‘We’ve got intelligence inputs that Maoists guerrillas are still actively operating in the region,’ he added.

In protest against the government’s proposed move, the PCAPC will organise a rally in the area Monday.

Trouble erupted in Lalgarh last November after the police arrested some school students and allegedly harassed tribal women following a landmine blast on the route of the convoy of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and central ministers Ram Vilas Paswan and Jitin Prasada near Bhadutala area.

Later, the tribals, allegedly backed by the Maoists, dug up roads and placed big tree trunks across them, virtually cutting off the trouble-prone zone from the rest of the district.

They also demanded a public apology from the police for the alleged excesses against them.

Man who died in accident’ was murdered for gain: Cops

CHENNAI: Suburban police arrested two of the three persons who had murdered a businessman on the 200 Feet Road near Pallavaram and made it appear
like an accident. The three had committed the murder to loot money.

On the night of January 9, Ravichandran of Keelkatalai, a textile shop owner, was leaving for Tiruvannamalai on his motorcyle. As he was passing the 200 Feet Road near Chitalapakkam, Ashraf Ali, Shabeer and Jnanamoorthy signalled him to stop.

Assuming that they wanted help, Ravichandran stopped his vehicle. Shabeer immediately hit him with a stone and knocked him unconscious. Asharaf and Jyaanamoorthy then stamped on his chest. Once convinced he was dead, they kicked Ravichandran’s body to a marsh below and pushed the bike down to make it look like an accident. They removed his chain and pocketed Rs 21,000. Thus, police were led to believe that it was an accident. The perpetrators of the crime had luck on their side for about two months.

On April 3, the police arrested Jnanamoorthy in Chittalapakkam for trying to steal money from a person at knifepoint. During interrogation, he confessed all the crimes he had committed. “He told us about Ravichandran’s murder, too. We then searched for Ashraf Ali and arrested him on Saturday morning. He was loitering in Pallavaram. A 10-sovereign chain and Rs 5,000 in cash were recovered from them. We are searching for Shabeer,” said V Selvaraj, inspector of Chittalapakkam police station.

Selvaraj said that there were no signs of external injury on Ravichandran’s body. “Most of the injuries were internal. The three were schoolmates and dropped out of school at the same time. They started looting people from 2006.” They would use the money to travel to Puducherry and Mahabalipuram and have a good time. “It was a difficult case as it initially looked like an accident. But the police team did a good job. Now, there are no unsolved murders in the suburban police limits,” said S R Jangid, Chennai suburban police commissioner.

According to police, the 200 Feet Road, which connects Pallavaram and Madipakkam, was not officially opened and, hence, did not have lighting. Since work was completed, people began using the stretch. We will be intensifying patrolling there and post policemen,” said Selvaraj.

Asha Goel murder: Lie detector test on accused

MUMBAI: The metropolitan magistrate’s court has granted crime branch the permission to conduct brain mapping and lie detector tests on Praveen
Vatsa, an accused in the Asha Goel murder case. A police team will take Vatsa to the government forensic lab at Bangalore next week.

Narendra was Asha’s relative. Vatsa, Narendra’s domestic help, was arrested last week after officials found out that he had lied about his employer’s whereabouts.

Police believe that Vatsa was part of the murder conspiracy. While Suresh died in 2004, the police have sought Interpol’s help to bring in Subhash, who is in Canada.

Jigeesha case accused gives cops the slip

One of the accused in the murder cases of television journalist Soumya Vishwanathan and IT executive Jigeesha Ghosh managed to give the police a slip on Thursday afternoon. The accused identified as Ajay Sethi also attacked a policeman who tried to intercept his car near Badarpur border in southeast Delhi on Thursday.

The police team was stuck in the traffic jam at Badarpur border while the accused managed to fled from the scene. Police said they had deployed several teams who had been on trail of Sethi.

Sethi who lives in Faridabad, had allegedly helped the accused in helping them dispose the Wagon R car used in the murder of Soumya, police said.

“When we grilled the accused they told us about the whereabouts of Sethi. They however did not divulge the correct address and we had to deploy more than 50 policemen on foot as well as scooters on his trail,” said a senior police officer.

Police said they reached Badarpur border-where Sethi was to meet one of his accomplices-on the basis of a specific tip-off. “Around 4 pm we had almost cornered him, but he managed to flee.

A constable had also managed to break open the windowpane of the Santro car he was driving. Sethi punched him hard and the constable fell on the ground,” said the officer.

Another police team that was following him got stuck in the traffic jam and Sethi gave them a slip. When the police raided his rented accommodation in Faridabad they did not find anyone and neighbours informed the police that Sethi’s wife left the house only few minutes ago.

Accused destroyed Jigeesha’s cards Ravi Kapoor, a car thief who is said to be the leader of the gang that killed Ghosh and Vishwanathan told the police that he destroyed the cards soon after purchasing goods from it. “So far we have not recovered Ghosh’s ATM cards from Kapoor or the other accused.

They told us that they destroyed the cards soon after they had used it for purchases from Sarojini Nagar market on March 19,” said the officer. The accused would be produced in a city court on Friday where the police will seek their remand again in Vishwanathan’s case.

Accused unrepentant Policemen who interrogated the three accused said that they were unremorseful and were not guilty at all. “They have not shown any kind of remorse during their interrogation.

UP officials hand over CD to Varun Gandhi

New Delhi, Mar 20 (ANI): Election Commission officials from Pilibhit visited former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi’s residence here on Friday to enquire about the hate speech delivered by her son Varun Gandhi.

The officials, who were accompanied by a Delhi Police team, handed over a copy of the CD.

A K Mishra, a Tehsildar rank officer of the UP Government, who led a two-member team, said: “We have come here in connection with the CD case. We have handed over a copy of the CD.”

Without giving any further details, the UP officials told reporters that they were on poll duty.

On Thursday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi moved the Allahabad High Court challenging the criminal case lodged against him on the directives of the Election Commission for his alleged anti-Muslims remarks.

He claimed that the whole issue was created by his political rivals and was the result of a political conspiracy.

He also claimed that the tape showing his alleged anti-Muslim remarks has been doctored.

Varun Gandhi was accused of making inflammatory communal remarks at election meetings in his constituency on March 6.

Gandhi had been recorded as saying, “If anyone raises a finger towards Hindus or if someone thinks that Hindus are weak and leaderless, if someone thinks that these leaders lick our boots for votes, if anyone raises a finger towards Hindus, then I swear on Gita that I will cut that hand.”

The Election Commission issued a notice to Gandhi, charging him of violating the Model Code of Conduct for elections by making communal remarks.
