Mystery of the unknown victim

New Delhi, June 6 — Three days after the speeding car of a politician’s son rammed a taxi in South Delhi, the identity of the 28-year-old woman passenger killed in the incident remains a mystery. The police claim they have contacted individuals whose phone numbers were recovered from the victim’s phone but, curiously, “all of them have expressed ignorance about her identity”. Mystery also shrouds the whereabouts of the injured taxi driver, Naresh Kumar Kapoor (33), who was taken to AIIMS for treatment before he went untraceable. The taxi is registered with an authorised stand within the premises of The Lalit, a 5-star hotel, in Central Delhi. A senior police officer, strictly on the condition of anonymity, said, “He is in a state of shock and his version of the incident is yet to be recorded.” However, when asked whether the police knew where he was, the officer replied in the negative. The driver of the two-seater Mercedes Benz convertible, 26-year-old Dinesh Singh Tanwar, walked away scot-free by furnishing a bond of Rs 50,000 just hours after the incident that took place at 3.35 am in Africa Avenue Marg. Dinesh is the son of Kanwar Singh Tanwar, the second richest candidate in Delhi to contest the 2008 Assembly polls on a BSP ticket, who later joined the Congress.

On speculations that the unidentified female belonged to an escort service, the DCP said, “We are investigating the case from all angles and these speculations are not relevant.”

Man shot at, robbed by bikers

New Delhi, June 5 — Two bike-borne assailants shot at a 40-year-old businessman and robbed him in northwest Delhi on Friday night, the police said. “The incident was reported from Ranjit Singh Road, located in the Adarsh Nagar area, at 9.30 p.m.,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he was not allowed to talk to the press. The police identified the victim as Rajinder Kumar Jain, a resident of Inderlok who is a shoe retailer. “Jain was returning from a friend’s wedding with his family, when the two bike-borne assailants overtook him and attempted to stall him,” the officer said. According to the police, they assailants then started threatening Jain with dire consequences and shot him in his right arm when he talked back. “The duo brandished a country-made pistol during a heated exchange with the businessman and shot at him when he refused to get intimidated and attempted to drive away,” said the officer.

“According to Jain, robbery was not the duo’s intent. We have registered a case and investigations into the matter are under way,” the officer added.

Case against Andhra minister for ”assaulting” realtor

Hyderabad, Jun 6 (PTI) An Andhra Pradesh minister has been booked for allegedly assaulting a realtor following a dispute over laying a drainage pipeline, police said today. On a complaint by real-estate businessman S Ram Reddy, Banjara Hills police last night registered a case against Health Minister Danam Nagender, a local Congress corporator and her husband under sections 448 (trespass) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC, they said.

According to police, Reddy was constructing a building on Road No 12, where a drainage pipeline was being laid. However, Banjara Hills corporator B Bharati and her husband Baba Naik arrived at the construction site yesterday and reportedly told the workers to stop the work saying it was illegal.

Reddy further complained that following a phone call from the corporator and her husband, the minister arrived at the site along with his supporters and indulged in an heated argument asking him to stop the work and allegedly assaulted him, a senior police officer said. Meanwhile, following a counter complaint lodged by the corporator, the police have also registered a case against the realtor under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC. Further investigations were on in both the cases, the police officer added.

At least 50 people were injured in the collapse of the building, which police said was badly constructed. Rescue teams were scouring through the rubble for bodies and survivors.

Nearly all the building’s tenants escaped unharmed as it started to tilt to one side, and most of the casualties were from the homes surrounding the structure, witnesses said.

“We fear the death toll may go up further as there are many people still trapped under the rubble,” a police officer on the scene said.

Car driven by drunk rams, kills Inspector

New Delhi, May 29 — Delhi Police Inspector Shyam Sunder Pawar (45) died on Thursday night after he was hit by an overspeeding car on Bhairon Road. Police say the offending car- a Maruti Suzuki Swift-was driven by Sahil Gupta (22), a businessman in east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden area. Gupta was apparently drunk at the time of the incident. The incident was discovered by a patrol party from the local police station around 12.30 pm. Police say, “Gupta’s car, after hitting Inspector Pawar, had crashed into an iron railing on the sidewalk where digging work for the Commonwealth Games is underway.” “Such was the impact that the front of the vehicle suffered irreparable damage. Pawar’s body was recovered 20 metres away from the accident spot,” said a senior police officer. Inspector Pawar, a 1994 batch police officer and from a family of police personnel, was posted as Inspector Investigations at the Kalyanpuri Police Station in east Delhi. “Prima facie, it seems that Inspector Pawar, who was standing behind his black Hyundai Santro, was talking on the phone when Gupta crashed into him. The left side of Pawar’s body was completely destroyed,” the officer said. Police said Gupta claimed he was trying to avoid a stray dog and lost control of the vehicle in the process. “Gupta was so inebriated that he confessed to having blacked out seconds before he hit the officer.” When the police patrol party reached the spot, Gupta was apparently trying to discard empty beer bottles from his car. He was pulled out of his damaged car by the patrol party. Gupta’s kin, however, refuted the police’s claims. “Sahil was not under the influence of alcohol. He doesn’t drink,” claimed his mother Veena Gupta (42). Gupta was released on bail on Friday evening. However, the police stood by their version of the incident.

“We have registered a case of attempting to cause death through negligence and are investigating the matter.”

In a fit of rage, Jagannath apparently hit Bindu and then, in front of his other five children, poured kerosene on her. “Then he set her on fire and tried to flee.

First case of burka rage in France

London, May 18 (ANI): Taking offence at the attire of a fellow shopper, a 60-year-old lawyer ripped a Muslim woman’s burka off in a clothing shop, in what is being described by the police as France’s first case of rage against the Islamic veil.

During a weekend shopping trip the woman lawyer had an argument over the attire following which the pair came to blows before being arrested.

The incident happened due to growing racial tensions in the country, as France prepares to introduce a total ban on burkas and other forms of religious dress, which cover the face, The Telegraph reports.

The woman lawyer made snide remarks about a 26-year-old Muslim convert’s burka while walking through the store in Trignac, near Nantes, in the western Loire-Atlantique region, the paper said.

A police officer close to the case said: “The lawyer said she was not happy seeing a fellow shopper wearing a veil and wanted the ban introduced as soon as possible.”

“The shop manager and the husband of the Muslim woman moved to break up the fighting,” the officer said. All three were arrested and taken to the local gendarmerie for questioning.

A spokesman for Trignac police said that two complaints had been received, with the Muslim woman accusing the lawyer of racial and religious assault. The latter, in turn, had accused her opponent of common assault.

The French parliament has adopted a formal motion declaring burkas and other forms of Islamic dress to be “an affront to the nation’s values.” (ANI)

Man pleads guilty to punching police officer

A man has pleaded guilty to punching a police officer in a Katherine nightclub in an incident which led to the death of another policeman.

Aaron James Vale, 28, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for punching Constable Kevin Carr at a Katherine nightclub in the early hours of New Years Day.

The Katherine Magistrates Court heard Constable Carr and Sergeant Brett Meredith were off-duty when they intervened in an argument between some men.

Constable Carr tried to move one man away from the bar area, but Vale punched him, and he fell unconcious to the ground.

The court heard Vale then tripped over Sergeant Meredith, who was also lying unconcious on the floor.

Sergeant Meredith later died from his injuries.

Another man, Michael Martyn, is facing a committal hearing next week over Sergeant Merediths death.

Vale will be sentenced later this month.

The migrants paid up to $5,400 to the smugglers, Mr Hidayat said.

Driver fined for reversing car into his own driveway!

London, April 28 (ANI): A man, who reversed his car into his own driveway, will now have to pay a fine for the ”offence”.

Maxwell Cannon, 25, was served a 60pound fixed penalty notice and told that he had committed a traffic offence by waiting on the zigzag markings of a pedestrian crossing outside his home in Harrington, near Workington in Cumbria.

Saying that he had been waiting for a break in the heavy traffic to reverse his car into his home last August, Cannon challenged the ticket at West Allerdale Magistrate”s Court.

However, the court upheld the penalty and even Carlisle Crown Court has now turned down his appeal.

According to Cannon”s lawyer Alison Whalley, it “offended common sense” that someone could not legally reverse into his own drive.

On the day of the incident a police officer told Cannon that he could have driven forward into the driveway but the latter said reversing out onto a main road was against the Highway Code could be dangerous.

But the judge, Recorder Ahmed Nadim did not agree with Cannon.

“We accept that he has intended to conduct his driving in a manner designed to mitigate the inconvenience to other traffic but that does not afford him an exemption under the regulations,” the Telegraph quoted Nadim, as saying. (ANI)
