Marvin Isley of Isley Brothers dies at age 56

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Marvin Isley, bass player for the Isley Brothers, died in Chicago on Sunday, aged 56. He reportedly succumbed to complications from diabetes, a disease that forced him to retire from performing with the legendary funk band in 1997.

Entertainment | Music

Marvin joined the Isley Brothers in 1973 after the original lineup — comprised of older brothers O’Kelly Jr., Rudolph and Ronald — had scored hits with songs like “Twist and Shout,” “It’s Your Thing” and “Shout.”

The band’s first album with Marvin, 1973′s “3+3,” went platinum. Marvin is credited with bringing a funkier, younger vibe to the group on several songs that have been heavily sampled by hip-hop artists such as Ice Cube and Jim Jones.

The Isley Brothers continued to chart throughout the ’70s with songs like “Who’s That Lady,” “Fight the Power” and “Between the Sheets,” many of which were co-written by Marvin and the two younger members, brother Ernie and brother-in-law Chris Jasper. Marvin, Ernie and Jasper split off in 1984 to form Isley-Jasper-Isley, but returned to the fold in 1991.

Catalyst simulations for fuel cells may make clean cars a reality

Washington, Sep 18 (ANI): University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers are working towards developing better catalyst for fuel cells in a bid to make clean cars a reality.

If successful, the researchers could make a car that runs on hydrogen from solar power, and produces water instead of carbon emissions.

Materials science and engineering assistant professor Dane Morgan and Ph.D. student Edward (Ted) Holby have developed a computational model that could optimise an important component of fuel cells, making it possible for the technology to have a more widespread use.

The researchers investigated how particle size is related to the overall stability of a material, and showed with their model that increasing the particle size of a fuel cell catalyst decreases degradation and therefore increases the useful lifetime of a fuel cell.

Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that facilitate a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing electrical power and forming water.

In the type of fuel cells Morgan is researching, called proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), hydrogen is split into a proton and electron at one side of the fuel cell (the anode).

The proton moves through the device while the electron is forced to travel in an external circuit, where it can perform useful work, while at the other side of the fuel cell (the cathode), the protons, electrons and oxygen combine to form water, which is the only waste product.

One of the many hurdles to producing efficient fuel cells for widespread use is the catalyst added to aid the reaction between protons, electrons and oxygen at the cathode.

Current fuel cells use platinum and platinum alloys as a catalyst. While platinum can withstand the corrosive fuel cell environment, it is expensive and not very abundant.

Thus, to maximize platinum use, researchers use catalysts made with platinum particles as small as two nanometers, which are approximately 10 atoms across.

These tiny structures have a large surface area on which the fuel cell reaction occurs.

However, platinum catalysts this small degrade very quickly, which means that the fuel cell doesn’t last long.

The researchers have found a possible solution to the rapid degradation problem-when it comes to catalyst particle size, sometimes smaller isn’t better.

In their modelling work, they showed that if the particle size of a platinum catalyst is increased to four or five nanometers, which is approximately 20 atoms across, the level of degradation significantly decreases.

This means the catalyst and the fuel cell as a whole can continue to function for much longer than if the particle size was only two or three nanometers.

“Fuel cells are just one of many energy technologies – solar, battery, etc. – with enormous potential to reduce our dependence on oil and our carbon emissions. Computer simulation offers a powerful tool to understand and develop new materials at the heart of these energy technologies,” said Morgan. (ANI)

Tribals attend RBI’s financial outreach camp in Tripura

Agartala, Sep. 6 (ANI): Thousands of tribal families turned out to participate in a financial outreach camp organized by the Reserve Bank of India in Pitra village of Tripura.

The camp was organised with the objective of bringing awareness among villagers about banking norms.

“Bank wants to lend for projects which would generate economic activity will lead to development of north east.

So we have to be able to work together. The state government, the banks, the non-governmental organisations, the locals, Panchayati Raj institutions and the Reserve Bank will act like a catalyst to make people come together and work together for economic development,” said Usha Thorat, deputy governor, Reserve Bank of India.

Organised on the occasion of Platinum Year celebration of Reserve Bank, the camp witnessed hundreds of villagers gathered at the stalls of different banks for opening of new bank accounts.

The villagers were also informed and familiarized with various banking facilities, security features of currency notes, exchange their soiled and mutilated currency notes, exchange currency notes for coins and also look into their complains with regards to banking facilities.

“In the village there is no banking system and this camp will be of great benefit to us. The villagers had no means of saving but now we think we can save something for our future,” Bubantala Jamatia, a villager

Under the model, post offices, cooperatives, NGOs, financial institutions, self-help groups, retired employees of state or central government may act as an agent of the banks and provide services to people. (ANI)

Beijing has largest number of rich people in China: Hurun Report

New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): A new report has revealed that Beijing has the maximum number of rich people in China.

The latest Hurun Report on China’s wealthiest people said that there are 143,000 multimillionaires and 8,800 billionaires in Beijing.

In Shanghai, there are 116,000 multimillionaires and 7,000 billionaires, reports the China Daily.

The report also sheds light on how the super-rich in Beijing want to live their lives.

In Beijing, wealthy people need to spend at least 87 million yuan on property, cars and other luxury goods in order to be regarded as one of the city’s ‘new aristocrats’, or upper class, the report said.

They have at least three dwellings of their own, including a villa, like the 400-sq-m Ziyu Shanzhuang villa costing 24 million yuan, a luxury apartment in the downtown area for work purposes, and a Siheyuan courtyard house probably in Houhai.

The report said that most of them prefer investing in arts and they are willing to spend as much as 50,000 yuan for a year on piano classes.

In their luxury homes, they also have rare porcelain and jade ware collections interspersed with works of ancient or contemporary painters.

The rich in Beijing consider Cartier as the favourite luxury brand. They keep themselves updated on the world of finance with China Business News rather than the 21st Century Business Herald.

The bulk of their expenditures are on property, furnishings and fabrics, according to the report.

“During the past several years, the complexion of the rich in China has changed in many aspects. Many of them say they want to be a sort of upper class, rather than only being rich,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and publisher of the Hurun Report.

The report described the capital’s richest as people who wear haute couture and who carefully choose gifts for parents, spouses and children on special days.

They probably drive a 1 million yuan Mercedes Benz R500 limousine and are also members of Yongfoo Lite, the most popular club for Beijing’s wealthiest.

Their wives usually frequent the Lan Club with friends, wear Bulgari platinum and diamond watches and drive BMW sports cars.

Japan’s Osaka and Tokyo are the top travel destinations for spouses, and they attend musicals and the opera several times a year.

The report said that annual spending of the rich in Beijing is estimated at about 5.7 million yuan, mainly for new cars, collections and about 1 million yuan for donations.

The report also defined the upper class in five other cities including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Shenyang. (ANI)

Minimally invasive stroke treatment effective than traditional surgery

Washington, May 30 (ANI): Minimally invasive coil treatment for stroke has been found to have better outcomes than traditional surgical treatments, says researchers.

However, the procedure is drastically expensive.

Coiling is a technique that involves placing a small catheter into the aneurysm and filling it with platinum coils. The catheter is introduced through a blood vessel in the groin and advanced under X-ray all the way into the brain blood vessels.

The researchers from Zeenat Qureshi Stroke Research Center at University of Minnesota Medical School looked at the treatment response of more than 2,000 patients, half of whom underwent minimally invasive endovascular coiling for brain aneurysms, and found that the procedure has better patient outcomes – including qualify of life.

“The minimally invasive treatment is better tolerated in selected critically ill patients with ruptured brain aneurysms,” said Dr Alberto Maud, principal investigator of the study.

“The procedure is effective in preventing a second rupture but currently limited in terms of cost due to the need for additional follow-up procedures to treat new aneurysm growth.

“However, a new generation of devices promises to provide more permanent obliterations for aneurysms.

“It should be noted that despite additional treatments, patients treated with endovascular treatment continued have lower rates of death and disability than those treated with open surgery,” he added.

The research is published in the Journal of Neurosurgery. (ANI)

The 9 things Lindsay needs to do to save her career

New York, May 1 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan was a superstar in the making at the age of 17-what with four major movies, followed by a hit with ‘Mean Girls’ and a platinum album and numerous magazine covers.

However, with her lifestyle turning towards DUIs, a series of tumultuous personal relationships, stints in rehab and a few ‘unregistered’ movies, she turned into media’s favourite toy.

But, many believe that at 22, Lindsay can still save the sinking ship of her career and put together her life again.

And leading publicists, agents, media insiders and career coaches have now enlisted the nine things Lohan should do to save her career, and they are:

1. Get behind a good cause

“She needs to get involved in charitable work,” The New York Daily News quoted Allison Kugel, President of Allison Dawn Public Relations, as saying.

She added that Lohan should publicly support a feel-good cause like children, animals or the homeless.

2. Develop self-discipline

World-renowned career coach Jim Fannin said that self-discipline is a key for Lohan to get her career back on track.

3. Focus on doing her job well

“Lindsay Lohan needs to focus on doing her job. She’s an actress, yet all we know recently are her DUIs and relationship issues. Maybe that means taking jobs that may not be the best paying, but can build her acting credibility and gain her respect in the industry,” said Joe Ciarallo, Editor of PRNewser.

4. Network

Lohan needs to attend industry events and network with industry leaders so they can “see that she’s changed,” said Melissa Schumer, Executive Vice President of Cohn and Wolfe.

5. Take a page from Angelina’s book

Angelina Jolie is a good example of how an actress can get her life and career back on track, said Kugel.

6. Use humour to her advantage

“It was smart for her to do the eHarmony item,” said Cooper Lawrence, author of the book ‘Cult of Celebrity’.

The eHarmony item was a video clip satirizing her life for the FunnyorDie.com Web site. She added that these kinds of things can help us like her again.

7. Tone down the edge

Lawrence said that Lohan should try to revive that sweet girl image; similar to the character she played in ‘Mean Girls’.

8. Take control of her personal life and how it’s portrayed in the media

Schumer added that her constant presence on the bar scene is not helping her image and she also needs to better control how her personal life is portrayed in the media.

9. Surround herself with the right people

The road ahead for Lindsay will have its bumps, and to endure it, she’s going to need to surround herself with the right people, whether its good friends or savvy publicists and managers. (ANI)
