Bangalore University to hold examination adalat

BANGALORE: To clear the backlog of 4,000 cases on faculty marks cards, wrong names and non-declaration of results, Bangalore University will hold an examination adalat. BU will submit itself to the scrutiny of a retired high court judge in a bid to reduce pendency of cases and bring in transparency. The decision during the adalat will be binding on the university, students, colleges and other stakeholders. “We want all cases to be disposed of in three months,” the BU V-C said.

Book fair: BU plans to hold `World of Books 2011′, a mega book fair at Palace Grounds on August 12 to mark Librarians’ Day. The event will be open to 1 lakh students and 25,000 faculty from the university’s 600-odd affiliated colleges. One million books will be on display. Besides academic activities and literary walks, BU will give away the `best user award’ to one PG student who uses the university library the most.

No chairs now

BU’s proposal to start academic chairs in the name of Gautam Buddha, BR Ambedkar and Akka Mahadevi, among others, got a thumbs down from academic council members. Members said the university should first review the working of the existing chairs before setting aside Rs 60 lakh for new ones. BU V-C N Prabhu Dev admitted that Rs 5 lakh granted by Isro for a chair is insufficient and the Kempegowda Chair set up by BBMP is not functioning properly.

Biogas plant : To explore the possibility of generating power on its own, BU will set up a biogas plant at an estimated cost of Rs 100 lakh on Jnanabharathi campus. The city corporation will supply 25 tonnes of organic waste daily for 15 years.

Tonnes of toxic water leaking from Fukushima

TOKYO: Tonnes of radioactive water were discovered on Tuesday to have leaked into the ground from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant, the latest in a series of leaks at the plant damaged in a March earthquake and tsunami, the country’s nuclear watchdog said.

More than three months after the disaster, authorities are struggling to bring under control damaged reactors at the power plant, 240 km north of Tokyo. About 15 tonnes of water with a low level of radiation leaked from a storage tank at the plant on the Pacific coast, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said. Tepco said it was investigating the cause of the leak which was later repaired.

China to buy air defence systems from Russia-Ifax

MOSCOW, April 2 (Reuters) – China has agreed to buy a large number of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia, Interfax news agency reported on Friday, citing the director of the Russian plant that makes the weapons.

Farmers grew rice in China’s Yangtze Basin 4,000 years ago

Washington, September 18 (ANI): New findings in the form of carbonized rice have indicated that farming in the Yangtze Basin in China existed as early as 4,000 years ago.

According to a report in Epoch Times, excavation in the Xiezi Area of Hubei Province yielded a total of 402 cultural relics, including carbonized rice.

Stone tools, pottery, bronze, jade and porcelain were unearthed, as well as a number of spinning wheels, drop spindles made of clay and other textile tools.

There were also stone mounds and smelting relics such as slag.

A variety of grains and seeds were found, and experts believe there may be carbonized wheat among the plant findings at the site.

The relics were determined to be from the Neolithic Era or New Stone Age at the time of the Shang Dynasty (ca. 1600-1050 B.C.) and Western Zhou Dynasty (ca. 1046-771 B.C.)

The combination of the relics that were found and their stratigraphic age provides valuable information about the diet structure, production methods, and living conditions of the inhabitants of the area during the time of the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties.

Archeological team leader, Luo Yunbin explained that there had been speculation in the past about edible rice production in the Yangtze Basin, but the new findings provide solid physical evidence that there was agricultural development in that area during ancient times. (ANI)

Farmers protest against Hydro Power Project in Himachal

Rampur (HP), Sept 18 (ANI): Hundreds of residents and farmers here protested against the construction of run-of-river hydropower plant project on the river Satluj.

The campaigners called for Save Satluj drive and complained that the hydropower plant would disturb the ecological balance of the region.

“Our protest is to save our environment and our natural resources. They are being affected by the project. Because of this, the Sutlaj river will dry up, water mammals will die and the temperature of the region will also rise,” said Mohan Singh, a farmer.

Environmentalists believe that the 412MW Rampur hydropower project is not suitable to the fragile ecology of the region.

“The project will divert this river through the tunnel leaving the river bed dry which will disturb the ecological balance. This will not only affect the course of river but will also harm the crop grown in the area,” said Jai Chand, head of the Village Committee for Environment Protection.

The activists were protesting against the Rampur hydropower project authorities and the district administration.

The campaigners later staged a sit-in-protest outside the office of Sub-Divisional Magistrate demanding his intervention into the matter.

Hundreds take part in ‘Ram Baraat’ in Agra

Agra, Sept 17 (ANI): Hundreds of people here took part in ‘Ram Baraat’, which is a part of the Ramlila celebrations.

Jeetander Chauhan, a worker, who erected the decorations for the celebrations, said that people were happy that god was among them.

“We are feeling that Lord Ram has appeared among us. Hundreds of people have come to witness this famous god’s marriage,” said Chauhan.

Maya Sharma, a devotee, said that women were also excited about this deity marriage.

“I’m really feeling good that ‘Baraat’ procession of Lord Rama and Sita is taking place. We are feeling good that god himself is present here,” said Sharma.

Every year, a new locality is chosen in Agra and festivities last for three days and the area is elaborately decorated with lights and flowers. The area is given a major face-lift befitting the venue for the divine marriage.

The marriage procession sees marriage between saint Shaligram who represents Lord Ram and holy Basil plant, which represents Sita, his wife.

The place is lit up with thousands of lights and non-stop music. The cinema theatres run film shows throughout the night to accommodate the migratory crowd.

These three days are like a carnival when people from all walks of life come together to have a great time.

The history of Ram Baraat is said to be around 125 years old, when Lala Kokamal, a cloth merchant, started the tradition of three-day festivities, revolving around the royal wedding. (ANI)

Osama declares decades of war on ‘powerless’ Obama

Islamabad, Sep 14 (ANI): Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has said that US President Barack Obama is “powerless” to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a transcript of a tape released by the terrorist organization’s media wing.

Al Qaeda’s As-Sahab Media released a video featuring a still image of Osama and audio statement entitled “A statement to the American people,” said the organisation IntelCenter.

SITE Intelligence Group, a terrorist-monitoring firm that translated the address, says Osama blames the wars on the “pro-Israel lobby” and corporate interests.

IntelCenter, another company that monitors terrorist propaganda, reports that the 11-minute video is an address to the American people, two days after the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The group described the release as an address to the American public. Osama usually releases a statement around September or October each year, The Times reports.

In his last previous known message in June, Osama said US President Barack Obama had planted the seeds of “revenge and hatred” towards the United States in the Muslim world and warned of decades of conflict to come.

That audiotape aired on Qatar’s Al-Jazeera news channel less than an hour after Obama landed in Saudi Arabia.

Obama “has followed the steps of his predecessor in antagonizing Muslims… and laying the foundation for long wars,” Osama said in the June release, referring to deadly clashes in Pakistan between the US-backed government and Islamist militants.

“He gave his orders to (Pakistani President Asif Ali) Zardari and his army to prevent the people of Swat from applying Sharia (Islamic) law,” he said.

“Obama and his administration have sowed new seeds of hatred against America. Let the American people prepare to harvest the crops of what the leaders of the White House plant in the next years and decades,” said the Al-Qaeda leader. (ANI)

World’s most advanced CT scanner to see through solids

Washington, September 11 (ANI): Researchers at The University of Nottingham, UK, have created the most advanced 3D X-ray micro Computed Tomography (CT) scanner in the world, which will help scientists from a wide variety of departments across the University literally see through solid materials, including soil.

Known as the ‘Nanotom’, the machine will make previously difficult and laborious research much easier as it allows researchers to probe inside objects without having to break into them.

The Nanotom will produce high-resolution 3D and slice images of solids with a pixel resolution of up to half micron or 500 nanometres.

It will be based at the School of Biosciences as the centrepiece of research into efforts to understand the microscopic interactions between plant root growth and soil structure.

The first project to use it will examine the sensing ability of roots to grow in the best direction for the health of the plant through the soil.

It aims to provide evidence of how the root reacts and adapts to soil stresses like drought and compaction by adjusting the genetic information in the tips of the root as it grows.

The Nanotom will allow researchers to follow the progress of the root growth and soil structural development for the first time without disturbing the sample of the plant growing in the soil.

The eventual aim of research like this is to contribute to worldwide efforts for food security and sustainable food production by preserving and improving the vital but finite soil resources of the planet.

It will enable scientists to come up with a recipe for the best soil composition and level of compaction as well as informing plant breeding programmes.

Accurate soil structure measurement will be also be essential in changing farming practices to cut CO2 which is released into the atmosphere during traditional ploughing of agricultural soil.

According to Dr Sacha Mooney from the University’s Division of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, “This new kit will completely revolutionize our work in trying to understand the key factors that control some of the many functions that soils perform.”

“Of course it’s not just soils we’ll be scanning, I think I am just as excited about the opportunity to look inside newly created environmental building materials, eco-friendly crops developed to improve yield and even chocolate bars for the food industry,” Mooney added. (ANI)

‘Dung of the devil’ plant roots may offer swine flu cure

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): Chinese scientists have found that the roots of a plant have powerful natural substances that can kill the H1N1 virus.

Researchers Fang-Rong Chang and Yang-Chang Wu identified chemicals in the extracts of the “Dung of the Devil” plant, which were more effective against the H1N1 virus than the antiviral drug currently available for the flu.

The report will be published in the Sept. 25 issue of ACS’ Journal of Natural Products.

The plant biologically called ferula assa-foetida, is found in Iran, Afghanistan and mainland China.

The authors say: “Overall, the present study has determined that sesquiterpene coumarins from F. assa-foetida may serve as promising lead components for new drug development against influenza A (H1N1) viral infection.”

The plant was also used as a remedy during the1918 Spanish flu that took a toll of nearly 100 million lives.

However, the antiviral capacity of the plant was not fully confirmed until now. (ANI)

Great British Duck Race makes it to Guinness Book of Records

London, Sept 8 (ANI): A record breaking 205,000 plastic ducks floated down the Thames on Sunday as part of the third annual Great British Duck Race in London.

The event shattered the previous record of 175,000 ducks in a similar race held in China earlier this year.

“The duck race is a fantastic opportunity to have some fun, raise some serious money for a range of good causes and have the chance to win 10,000 pounds, as well as take part in a Guinness World Record Attempt,” Mike Scott, the event’s managing director, was quoted by the Telegraph, as saying,

The gala held near Hampton Court Palace raised over 100,000 pounds for various charities.

Each blue duck that entered the 1km race was priced at 2 pounds will now be sent to recycling plant in North Shropshire.

The yet unknown owner of the winning duck will be given a prize money of 10,000 pounds. (ANI)

Maldives uses coconuts to reduce its CO2 emissions

London, September 4 (ANI): The Maldives government has launched a project to reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using “biochar”, a charcoal made from bio-wastes such as coconut shells.

According to a report by BBC News, the pilot project, launched by the Maldives government together with a UK-based company, Carbon Gold, aims to produce biochar using bio-waste, including coconut shells, which are abundantly available in the archipelago.

Biochar is produced through the “slow cooking” (pyrolysis) of plant wastes. The resulting black char is rich in carbon and can be mixed with soil as a fertiliser.

“While wasting the environment we are wasting a lot of money by buying (fertilizer) from abroad,” said Minister of state for fisheries and agriculture, Aminath Shafia.

“So, we were looking into a project that could develop it using something that is available in the country,” she said.

The Maldives wants to be carbon neutral by 2020

President Mohamed Nasheed, who earlier announced a target of going carbon neutral by 2020, has welcomed the new partnership.

“Biochar has a crucial role in helping us achieve carbon neutral status as well as providing an economic and environmental boost to our people,” he said.

Shafia said that the project would be launched on three islands and rolled out to others if farmers responded positively.

According to officials at Carbon Gold, biochar is an effective way of removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

The company said that the fertiliser also improves soil fertility and locks up its carbon contents for several years after it is ploughed into the ground.

Daniel Morrel, a co-founder of the company, told BBC News that the Maldives was the first government to sponsor its production.

He described biochar as “carbon negative”.

“Waste that would have rotted or been burnt before is now locked up and put very safely in the soil,” he said.

“It is not one of the best solutions, but the great thing about biochar is while everybody is talking about reducing the CO2 emissions, this is actually taking CO2 out of the atmosphere,” he added. (ANI)

Indoor plants could be injurious to health

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): Potted plants might add a certain aesthetic value to your house, but they are likely to have adverse health effects, suggests a new study.

The research team headed by Stanley J. Kays of the University of Georgia’s Department of Horticulture has shown that these indoor plants actually release volatile organic compounds into the environment.

During the study, they identified and measured the amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by four popular indoor potted plant species Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Weeping Fig and Areca Palm.

Samples of each plant were placed in glass containers with inlet ports connected to charcoal filters to supply purified air and outlet ports connected to traps where volatile emissions were measured.

A total of 23 volatile compounds were found in Peace Lily, 16 in Areca Palm, 13 in Weeping Fig, and 12 in Snake Plant. Some of the VOCs are ingredients in pesticides applied to several species during the production phase.

Other VOCs released did not come from the plant itself, but rather the micro-organisms living in the soil.

“Although micro-organisms in the media have been shown to be important in the removal of volatile air pollutants, they also release volatiles into the atmosphere”, said Kays.

Furthermore, 11 of the VOCs came from the plastic pots containing the plants. Several of these VOCs are known to negatively affect animals.

Interestingly, VOC emission rates were higher during the day than at night in all of the species, and all classes of emissions were higher in the day than at night.

The study concluded, “while ornamental plants are known to remove certain VOCs, they also emit a variety of VOCs, some of which are known to be biologically active.

“The longevity of these compounds has not been adequately studied, and the impact of these compounds on humans is unknown.”

The study is published in the American Society for Horticultural Science journal HortScience. (ANI)

Maoists attack private plant in Bihar, kidnap security guards

Patna, Sep 2 (ANI): About 400 armed Maoists attacked a plant owned by a private road construction firm and kidnapped six security guards on Wednesday in the Jamui district of Bihar.

The Jamui district comes under the Maoist affected areas of the state.

According to Additional Director General of Police Neelamani, the red ultras raided the SMPL’s plant at Hariondhi village and damaged pay loaders and three trucks.

Neelamani confirmed the kidnapping of six private security guards of the company by the Naxals.

The non-payment of ransom demanded by the Maoists from the private firm owner was said to be the reason behind the attack, Neelmani said

The Special Task Force (STF) And the District armed policemen had an encounter with the Maoists for some time after the incident, but they managed to escape into the thick forest area on Jamui-Chakai road, sources said. (ANI)

Ratan Tata says willing to return Singur land if compensated

Kolkata, Sep.1 (ANI): TATA Group chairman Ratan Tata on Tuesday told a press conference here that the failed NANO plant at Singur had cost him about 500 crore rupees, and he was willing to return the land if the State Government compensated Tata Motors.

“We do not want to sit on the land. We will return it if the State Government compensates us for the investments made there,” Ratan Tata said.

“We don’t intend to block development in West Bengal. The Singur plant cost us Rs.500 crore. We have other investments in West Bengal, which are on track,” he added.

Tata said this after holding meetings with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and State Commerce and Industry Minister Nirupam Sen.

Sen was also present at the press conference.

Tata said he had no plans to invest in Singur, but was open to any plan from the government.

“We have no plans for Singur but will cooperate with the government if they have a plan that makes sense to the government and us. We do not wish to sit on the land,” he said.

“West Bengal remains in our heart. One incident or one year does not matter in the life of a corporation,” he said.

At Tata Motors’ annual general meeting in Mumbai recently, Tata had said that he could return to Singur if the situation improved.

Today’s declaration puts to rest recent speculation about the possibility of Tata reviving the project in future.

However, when reminded of Mamata Banerjee’s demand to return the Singur land, he retorted, “But it is not her land.”

It may be recalled that Tata Motors exited Singur last October after a fierce agitation by Mamata Banerjee over compensation for farmers.

The company relocated the NANO project to Sanand in Gujarat.

The overall investment was Rs.1700 crore. Much of it has been recovered. The ‘sunk’ cost is estimated to be about Rs.500 crore. (ANI)

Punjab police seize four kilograms of heroin

Amritsar, Sep 1 (ANI): Sleuths of Special Operation Cell (SOC) of Punjab have seized on Monday four kilograms of heroin estimated to be worth around rupees 200 million rupees in the international market and also arrested five men.

This was disclosed by P K Rai, Senior Superintendent of Police, Special Operation Cell, (SOC), Punjab.

Acting on a tip off, the police arrested Amanpreet Singh, Sandeep Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Jarnail Singh and Tehal Singh when they were going to deliver the consignment of heroin to a drug runner.owever, one of their accomplices Gulsaab Singh managed to give a slip to the raiding posse of policemen.

P K Rai revealed that apart from heroin, they also recovered a Maruti Alto and Splendour motorcycle from them.

The Special Operation Cell also registered a case under sections 21/25/29/61/85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic (NDPS) Act of 1985 and filed FIR (First Information Report) vis-à-vis the seizure.

Drug seizures are often reported from Punjab, bordering Pakistan, and narcotics agencies say the border state is a major route for drug supply to the West from Afghanistan-Pakistan region.eroin is derived from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seedpod of the Asian poppy plant. US report reveals Pak enhancing nuke weapon capability to target India

Washington, Sep.1 (ANI): Top US nuclear scientists have shockingly revealed in a report that Pakistan is enhancing its nuclear weapons and production capabilities.

According to the report, which is yet to enter the public domain, Pakistan is readying a new nuclear capable ballistic missile for deployment and two nuclear capable cruise missiles.

It also says that Pakistan is building two new plutonium production reactors and a second chemical separation facility at Chasma, Khushab and Dera Ghazi Khan in southern Punjab.

Pakistan is also renewing work on a partially built separation plant at Chasma.

It is believed that this secretive and substantial arsenal build-up is targeted at India.

Based on official estimates of Pakistan’s current uranium and plutonium technology, scientists had so far thought the country far short of having a 100 nuclear warheads in its kitty.

The new report, however, suggests that Pakistan has exceeded earlier estimates, and from being able to build 30-40 nuclear weapons it actually could possess as many as 70-90 – a disturbing figure from India’s point of view and that of the US, currently debating financial and military aid to its friend in keeping with the AFPAK agreement.

Moreover, if this report is true Pakistan is clearly going beyond the moratorium existing as an unwritten code of conduct in South Asia to halt the arms race. (ANI)

How plant tissues know which end is their growing tip

Washington, August 30 (ANI): A team of scientists has silenced nine genes in a multicellular organism, which allowed them to discover molecular secrets of how certain plant tissues know which end is their growing tip, also referred to as polarized growth.

The research was carried out by biologist Magdalena Bezanilla and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, US.

The biologists conducted these experiments in a moss, but the findings illuminate processes in two tissues-root hairs and pollen tubes-found in all seed plants.

Root hairs are extremely fine individual cells that grow out of a plant’s root, greatly increasing its surface area to collect water, essential minerals and nutrients.

Pollen tubes travel down the flower to fertilize the plant’s egg.

Scientists have “a very limited knowledge” at the molecular level of how such cells determine the direction they’re growing, according to Bezanilla.

Knowing how to interrupt pollen tube formation in plants such as corn and soybeans, for example, could help prevent genetically engineered crops from interbreeding with wild populations.

Aiding root hair growth could boost drought-resistance to other economically important plants.he researchers focused on two proteins, actin and formin.

Actin, in this case a kind of scaffold-builder needed to form root hairs and pollen tubes, forms filamentous polymers and is important for many cellular processes in species ranging from yeast to man. ormins, like actin, are found in many species and help to control actin polymer formation. Formins are critical for actin-based cellular processes.

Tools in a biologist’s kit can now remove the function of specific proteins-usually one or two at a time-to silence a gene, but in this study, the researchers succeeded in silencing a remarkable nine genes at one time.

Bezanilla and colleagues systematically silenced the many actin-regulating formins and determined which members of this protein family are needed to generate cells for proper tip growth.ther tools in the researchers’ kit are methods for re-introducing the silenced genes, either normal or modified versions.

By “swapping parts” from closely related formin proteins and measuring tip growing activity for each combination, her research group eventually concluded that only one intact subclass of formins drives normal growth and controls how the plant recognizes its growing tip.

“If you take away any part of the formin, tip growth stops,” said Bezanilla.

Interestingly, the researchers also discovered that this particular subclass of formins is the fastest yet known in any organism. (ANI)

Polluted Sutlaj River water causing skin disease

Ropar (Punjab), Aug 30 (ANI): Hazardous industrial waste seeping into the Sutlaj River flowing through Ropar District in Punjab has contaminated the water to the extent that people are getting skin diseases and stomach ailments.

Environmentalists blamed cement and thermal factories along the Sutlaj River for polluting the water, apart from effluents released into the river from factories in Himachal Pradesh.

“The industrial effluents released from a thermal plant near Ghanoli in Ropar is going into the river and percolating into the ground water. When people draw the water from a hand pump or a well, it has lot of sulphur and other chemicals,” said Jaswant Singh, an environmentalist in Ropar.

People living in about 20 villages mainly use ground water, which has a high sulphur content. They say the water drawn from a well or hand pump looks yellow and tastes weird and it is inflicting skin diseases.

“We can’t work in this water for long. If you do, you get various skin diseases and it also upsets the stomach,” said Jaswant Singh, a patient.

There has been a sudden increase in the number of people visiting health centres due to various water-borne diseases.

“Contaminated water is the main problem here. We are getting lot of patients with skin disease, boils, diarrhea and cholera,” said Amandeep Kaur, a pharmacist at a local health centre.

Dadri farmers up in arms over proposed power project

Lucknow, Aug 29 (ANI): Hundreds of farmers took to the streets in Uttar Pradesh’s Dadri district, seeking return of farmland acquired to set up a power plant.

Reliance Power held by Anil Ambani’s ADA group had announced setting up of a 3,500 megawatt gas-based power plant in Dadri at a cost of 2.2 million dollars.

Farmers alleged that they were given a meagre compensation for their highly fertile agricultural land.

Farmers started the protest march from Reliance power project site in Dadri to Lucknow, on Thursday.

The protest was jointly organised by the farmers unions and the Congress Party.

Protestors said that their struggle was for justice.

“This demonstration is a long struggle that depicts the battle between justice and injustice. The way in which the 2500 acres of highly fertile land snatched from farmers by sighting the dream of a power project was wrong…five years have been passed but there is no sign of power plant,” said Pramod Tiwari, senior Congress leader. POSCO-India denies rumours of shifting its 12bn dollars project from Orissa

Bhubaneshwar, Aug.27 (ANI): The world’s fourth largest steel producer POSCO has denied reports of plans to shift the 12 billion dollars steel project, India’s largest foreign direct investment, from Orissa state.

Chairman of POSCO-India, Dong Hee Lee called on Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday to allay fears that the company had plans to shift its steel project from the State.

Dong-He Lee during his meet with Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar said the company would commence the construction very soon.

“We have very constructive, productive meeting with the Chief Minister on our mega project. I understand there are some rumours Posco has changed the original schedule, but we never changed that one. So we confirmed our original plans and we will start our construction very soon,” Dong-He Lee said.

The project is already running behind its schedule but Dong-He Lee said, the company planned to sort out any legal snags hitting the mega project by the end of 2009 and also had plans to begin ground levelling work from early next year.

“I think, we almost solved the problem already so there are no other barriers to start our construction quite soon. By the end of this year we would like to solve any kind of legal barriers and by early next year we will start the levelling of the land,” said Lee.

The project had run into trouble after local residents protested plans to compulsorily buy their land for the plant, which they say could displace about 20,000 people. (ANI)
