Italian police seize Maradona’s diamond studs

Rome, Sep 19 (ANI): Beleaguered football legend Diego Maradona had to hand over his diamond studs to police as part payment for the millions he owes the Italian tax authorities.

Italian officials paid the holidaying Argentinean coach a visit at the luxury hotel he was staying in and seized the earrings worth nearly 4,000 pounds, Sky News reports.

Police claimed that Maradona still owes some 20 million pounds, dating back to his seven-year stint at the Italian club Napoli, where he frequently failed to pay income tax.

After fleeing Buenos Aires on Monday following Argentina’s four defeats in five matches of 2010 World Cup qualifier, Maradona, 48, is currently staying at a spa in the town of Merano in north-eastern Italy, where he is trying to lose weight.

Italian authorities had seized two of his Rolex watches worth 11,000 pounds in 2006, when he was staying near Naples.

In 2005, they seized the money he was to receive for taking part in a TV dancing show.

Four years earlier, he was met by 20 police officers as he got off a plane in Rome.

Italy’s Supreme Court ordered the ex-footballer to pay 36 million euros in unpaid taxes.

According to the association of Italian taxpayers, Maradona still has 22.4 million euros to pay.

Recently, Brazilian legend Pele took a blow at Maradona, saying he feels another Argentine-born player, Alfredo di Stefano, is the best player ever.

“Maradona was a great player, but he could not kick with his right foot and did not score goals with his head.

The only time he scored an important goal with his head, it turned out he had used his hand,” Pele said referring to Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in 1986 World Cup. (ANI)

One in 10 Oz men has romanced co-passengers in flight

Sydney, Sep 9 (ANI): Almost one in 10 Australian men admitted to having had a relationship or fling with a co-passenger on an airline flight, when questioned during a survey.

The survey on inflight preferences, involving 1,000 respondents, revealed that women were half as likely as men to admit to a high-altitude fling.

Seventy per cent of respondents in the survey nominated their seat location as the most important factor contributing to the enjoyment of their journey.

The survey, by online travel specialist Expedia.com.au, found the front of the plane was the most popular seating place among 37 per cent of respondents.

Almost 30 per cent nominated an exit row, 19 per cent said over the wing, while only 15 per cent said the back of the plane.

In fact, Expedia has recommended that travellers should select a seat at the time of booking.

“We know that being able to choose the most suitable seat improves the comfort of a flight and the overall travel experience of our customers,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Expedia’s Louise Crompton as saying, while releasing the survey results.

The travel company has introduced new technology that enables customers to view and select their seating preferences while booking certain international flights. (ANI)

Jet Airways deadlock continues, flights cancelled

New Delhi, Sep 9 (ANI): Jet Airways flights were cancelled for a second consecutive day on Wednesday following a row between the airline management and its pilots over the sacking of two of their senior colleagues.

The management has sacked five more pilots, bringing the total number of those fired to ten. owever, the striking pilots are seeking a compromise formula, as a meeting will be held between them and Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal.

Earlier, Goyal said inconvenienced passengers were being accommodated on other foreign and domestic airlines in the country.

“We are trying our best, we are transferring passengers to a lot of domestic carriers in India, and lot of foreign airlines in India so that we minimise the inconvenience to customers… We are willing to sit with them (pilots) and to follow certain guidelines and rules and not create inconvenience to customers and passengers,” Goyal told TIMES NOW.

Jet Airways had also sought the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) intervention to resolve the crisis. Last month, Jet Airways had terminated the services of two of its senior most pilots, saying their services were not required after both formed a trade union body within the company.

A conciliatory meeting was called on August 31 between the Jet Airways management and the union, which claims to have representation of over 650 pilots. Jet Airways has 1000 pilots on its rolls.

Meanwhile, Air India has come to the rescue of the Indian cricket team scheduled to go to Colombo today by a Jet Airways flight for the tri-nation one-day series.

Air India will fly a special plane to carry the Indian cricket team to Colombo. The plane will take off from Chennai and go to Bangalore to take Indian captain M S Dhoni and leg spinner Harbhajan Singh before finally leaving for Colombo. (ANI)

US denies role in General Zia’s plane crash

Islamabad, Sep 7 (ANI): The US has rejected allegations that it was in any way involved in the plane crash that killed former president Zia-ul-Haq and several top Pakistani officials.

US embassy spokesman Richard Snelsire denied former Intelligence Bureau chief Brigadier (retired) Imtiaz Ahmed’s claims that the US was behind the crash, adding that, “[other] allegations that the US tried to influence or stall the investigations are baseless and untrue. We reject all such allegations.”

The then US Ambassador in Pakistan was killed in the 1988 incident therefore, the US will always favour getting to the actual facts, sources said.

Zia-ul-Haq’s elder son Ejaz-ul-Haq had alleged that the US forcefully stopped the probe into the incident of plane crash.

Ahmed said the US and internal powers were behind the 1988 plane crash that killed General Zia-ul-Haq, who ruled Pakistan from 1978 till his death. (ANI)

Bihar CM uses a two-decade old helicopter

Patna, Sep 5 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is using a two-decade old helicopter amid fears over its airworthiness.

M K Singh, pilot of Bihar government’s Pawanhans helicopter has said that that Kumar’s chopper, bought in the year 1989-1990, was fit to fly.

“This helicopter was bought in the year 1989-1990 and had came in the same lot as Pawanhans helicopter. We are not facing any major problem. Small problems will be there even if you buy a brand new Boeing or an airbus. These technical problems will exist till the time one keeps on flying,” he added.

Singh also said that age of a chopper was not intrinsic to its airworthiness.

“If a plane is old, it does not mean that its condition is bad. All its components are to be changed on a regular basis. There is a periodic servicing, a major servicing and when the plane crosses certain age, then crack detection takes place, an ultrasound is being conducted. These days new systems are coming like CT scan, which can detect minor cracks,” he added.

Intensified search operations for missing Andhra CM resume

Hyderabad/New Delhi, Sep.3 (ANI): Search operations for missing Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy resumed at first light on Thursday morning.

State Government sources said that they have narrowed down the search to a 20-square kilometer radius in the Nallamalla Forest Range where they believe the seven-seat Bell helicopter carrying the chief minister may have gone down on Wednesday at around 9.30 a.m.eddy’s chopper went missing while he was on his way from Kurnool to Chittoor.

He is accompanied by his Principal Secretary S Subramanyam and Chief Security Officer A S C Wesley. There were two pilots also on board the twin-engined Bell 430 helicopter that lost contact with Air Traffic Control at the Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad when it was headed for Chittoor district, about 600 kilometres from Hyderabad.

Indian Space Research Organisation chief G. Madhavan Nair and his team are monitoring a low flying remote sensing plane. Satellite images are being used to try and trace the place. So far, 41 images have been taken but none of them have revealed any information about the chief minister’s whereabouts.

As of now the Indian Government has said that it has not requested the United States for help in the matter, but has confirmed that the unmanned vehicle that is presently deployed in the north eastern part of the country is being kept on standby.

The Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, Andhra Police Greyhound commandos along with local police and district officials has entered the Nallamalla Forests to launch the massive search and rescue operation for Reddy.

About 250 Army personnel with night vision devices have joined the search operations.

“We have deployed two columns and one Ghatak (jungle warfare specialist) platoon in the area for searching the Chief Minister. Our troops are equipped with night vision devices such as goggles and hand held thermal imagers,” Army officials said.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to arrive in Hyderabad shortly to be with Reddy’s anguished family members and to get a hands on assessment of the search operation.

She has already sent Union Law Minister and Congress general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs Veerappa Moily and Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chauhan to the city to monitor developments. Chauhan told press persons that the State and Central Governments are sparing no efforts to search for the chief minister.

Meanwhile, National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan has said that while both the state and central governments are extremely concerned and worried about the missing chief minister, all available resources are being deployed for the search.

He said Army and Air Force helicopters have been conducting a search of the region. He also confirmed that two fixed-wing aircraft with synthetic aperture radar capabilities have been pressed into service.

Forces on the ground are also on the lookout for the missing helicopter and its individuals. arayanan said that the lack of communication is a major problem and also ruled out the probability of a Naxal strike.

“I don’t think the Naxals have the capability to bring down a helicopter,” he said.

“There is no question about calling off the search till we discover what happened there. We are hopeful we will find the Chief Minister, his chief secretary and PSO without serious injuries,” he added. (ANI)

MiG 29 intercepts Air France plane over Amritsar

Amritsar, Aug 27(ANI): An Air France plane was intercepted by an Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG 29 aircraft over Amritsar on Thursday morning as it crossed into Indian airspace.

IAF radars picked up the aircraft, flying at a flight level of 37,000 feet, as it entered Indian airspace on an established border entry point on the ATS route.

The aircraft was not in communication and also the secondary radar response code or the Squawk code of the aircraft, was not correct. The aircraft was then identified as ‘Unknown’.

Immediately, an IAF MiG-29 fighter jet was scrambled to intercept and investigate the identity of the ‘unknown’ aircraft.

It was only later that the aircraft started transmitting correct secondary radar response code and was picked up and identified by AD radar as civil airliner (A-343) of Air France (AFR-164), which was on its from Paris to Bangkok.

The MiG-29 fighter aircraft was given instructions to break off and return to base. A formal report of the incident has been forwarded to Airports Authority Of India (AAI). (ANI)

Kennedy led high quality of life up to his death, say doctors

Washington, Aug. 27 (ANI): Senator Edward M. Kennedy maintained a very good quality of life after he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

He continued speaking in front of Congress and making public appearances almost up until the time of his death on Wednesday morning at his home on Cape Cod.

“For a man in his 70s, he did very, very well,” Fox News quoted Dr. Michael Gruber, professor of neurology and neuro-surgery at NYU School of Medicine and Director of the Brain Tumor Center in Summit, New Jersey.

“He was walking unassisted (up until the end), he was lucid,” Dr. Gruber added.

Dr. Suriya Jeyapalan, a neuroncologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said that Kennedy’s condition was treatable, but not curable.

More than 18,000 primary malignant brain tumors are diagnosed each year in the United States; about 9,000 of those are malignant gliomas, according to the National Cancer Institute.

In general, half of all patients die within a year.

However, patients with malignant gliomas often maintain a very good quality of life after their diagnosis, Gruber said.

Gruber said the fate of a brain tumor patient depends on the location of the tumor. For example, if the tumor is located on the frontal or temporal lobe, then the patient’s speech might be affected.

Since Kennedy’s tumor was on the left parietal lobe, he suffered seizures. Other brain tumor patients may lose the ability to walk, lose vision or lose comprehension skills, depending on where the tumor lies or if the tumor invades other parts of the brain.

Kennedy underwent targeted brain surgery on June 2, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center. The surgery lasted for about 3 1/2 hours and Kennedy spent some of that time awake.

Targeted brain surgery is a delicate balance – removing as much tumor as possible improves cancer control, but there’s also the risk of harming the healthy brain tissue that lets patients walk and talk.

This is why doctors keep patients awake and talking during the surgery to make sure they’re steering clear of delicate areas of the brain. The surgery, considered a success, was followed by months of chemo and radiation therapy.

Kennedy has suffered other health problems over the years.

In October 2007, doctors performed surgery to clean out a partially blocked neck artery, which left untreated, could have trigged a stroke.

In 1964, Kennedy suffered several fractured bones in his back, broken ribs, and internal bleeding after he was involved in a plane crash.

Two people died in that crash. (ANI)

Terror on Qantas flight as man tries to open door during landing

Melbourne, Aug 26 (ANI): A man allegedly caused terror on a Qantas flight by trying to open the door of the plane, while it was coming in for landing into Sydney.

An eyewitness, who was about two rows away, said that the man was clearly agitated, and had been trying to stand up and move around the plane for about ten minutes during the descent, before reaching for the door handle.

Qantas staff somehow managed to subdue, and to reseat the man to the front section of the plane, and the flight made a normal landing, touching down at 6.05am AEST.

“The man, who was a big guy, stood up again and made a move for the middle door in the economy section,” the Daily Telegraph quoted the fellow passenger on the QF2 flight from London via Bangkok as saying.

“He grabbed the handle but Qantas staff were able to restrain him.

“The incident wasn’t in any way threatening, but some children did become scared and upset, and started yelling,” he said.

Passengers were asked to remain in their seats for another 20 minutes before being allowed to begin to disembark.

Police are now questioning the man, though a Qantas spokeswoman was unable to confirm whether the crew had to restrain the man on the QF2 flight from London via Bangkok.

“We don’t have any details of anybody trying to open a door,” she said.

“There was a disruptive passenger, but none of our staff has said that he was trying to open a door.

“The passenger and the crew are currently in discussions with the police,” she added. (ANI)

50yr-old Chinese woman planning to pull a plane with her pigtail!

New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): A Chinese woman, who is in her early 50s, has made plans to pull a plane using just her pigtail, after she used it to pull five cars, with a man sitting inside each, for a distance of 50 meters along a road.

Zhang Tingting, a native of Henan province, performed the feat on August 23 in Tongzhou district, Beijing, reports the China Daily.

Zhang, who will perform the airplane feat early next year, attributed her strength to the fact that she was well trained in Chinese Kungfu.

She says the art gave her mental and physical strength to pull off the stunt. (ANI)

Pink concert alerts Oz woman to her ballooning breast implant

Cairns, Aug 20 (ANI): An Aussie woman, who woke up with one breast double the size of the other, said that had she not attended American singer Pink’s concert, she would not have known there was a problem with her breast implant.

Cattle station worker Kimberley Koy’s breast had ballooned out overnight after a plane trip to Sydney to see Pink perform, and fearing that it might be breast cancer, she immediately visited her doctor.

But at the clinic, Koy came to know that the breast problem had started a week earlier, when she was stabbed in the chest by a runaway cow’s horn while working on a Cape York property.

Koy, who has C-cup silicone gel breast implants, had brushed the incident off as the horn did not break her skin or leave a bruise, and was oblivious to the damage it had done to her implant until it popped up after the plane flight.

“When I told the doctor I’d flown she said, ‘That makes perfect sense because air pressure forced out the silicone’,” Cairns.com.au quoted her as saying.

“I could have gone years without knowing.

“When I woke up the day after the plane trip it was double the size of my right one … I thought I had breast cancer.

“If I hadn’t have gone to the Pink concert I wouldn’t have known my breast was leaking,” she said.

Koy said that her breast had since shrunk, but still edged out further than the right one.

“It was like a coconut to an orange; it was bloody weird and incredibly noticeable,” she said.

“I just wanted everyone to hear my story because I think it is very funny.

“It felt like one breast had filled up with milk and the other hadn’t,” she added. (ANI)

Music lessons may boost a person’s ability to hear in noise

Washington, Aug 18 (ANI): Musical training could enhance a person’s ability to hear speech despite the deleterious effects of background noise by strengthening auditory memory and the representation of important acoustic features, according to a new Northwestern University study.

The study showed that musicians, who are trained to hear sounds embedded in a rich network of melodies and harmonies, are primed to understand speech in a noisy background, say in a restaurant, classroom or plane.

“The study points to a highly pragmatic side of music’s magic,” said Nina Kraus, director of Northwestern’s Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory, where the research was done.

The findings strongly support the potential therapeutic and rehabilitation use of musical training to address auditory processing and communication disorders throughout the life span.

While hearing speech in noise is difficult for everyone, the problem is particularly acute for older adults, who are likely to have hearing and memory loss, and for poor readers who have normal hearing but whose nervous systems poorly transcribe sounds that ultimately are critical to good reading skills.

The study suggested that such populations could benefit from the reordering of the nervous system that occurs with musical training.

As the brain changes with experience, musicians have better-tuned circuitry-the pitch, timing and spectral elements of sound are represented more strongly and with greater precision in their nervous systems.

“Musical training makes musicians really good at picking out melodies, the bass line, the sound of their own instruments from complex sounds,” said Kraus.

And the study has for the first time confirmed that such fine-tuning of the nervous system also makes musicians highly adept at translating speech in noise.

The finding has particular implications for hearing certain consonants, which are vulnerable to misinterpretation by the brain, and are a big problem for some poor readers in a noisy environment.

The brain’s unconscious faulty interpretation of sounds makes a big difference in how words ultimately will be read.

The study had 31 participants with normal hearing and a mean age of 23 divided into a group with music experience, and another without it.

They had to listen to sentences presented in increasingly noisy conditions, and repeat back what they heard.

Better perception in noise was linked with better working memory and tone discrimination ability.

The results indicated that musical training enhances the ability to hear speech in challenging listening environments by strengthening auditory memory and the representation of important acoustic features. (ANI)

Flying rabbis fight swine flu in Israel with prayers

London, Aug 13 (ANI): A group of ultra-orthodox rabbis and Jewish mystics flew over Israel singing prayers and blowing traditional ram horns in a bid to stop the spread of swine flu.

About 50 people, most of them bearded and cloaked in black, boarded a charter plane and circled the country chanting their prayers.

“The purpose of the flight was to stop the (swine flu) epidemic so that people will not keeping dying from it,” the Telegraph quoted Rabbi Yitzhak Basri, one of the participants as telling Yediot Achronot.

About 2,000 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in Israel and five people are known to have died.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised that the government will buy enough of the vaccine, once it is developed, to protect its citizens from the flu. (ANI)

Bodies of three recovered from Hudson River

New York, Aug.9 (ANI): The bodies of three of the nine presumed victims of a helicopter-plane collision over the Hudson River have been recovered, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said on Saturday.

NTSB chair Deborah Hersman says the recovery operations have been called off and will resume Sunday morning, due to compromising tides and low visibility.

The accident happened just after noon between Manhattan and Hoboken, N.J. when a small private plane collided with a sightseeing helicopter over the Hudson River, leaving debris scattered in the water and on the New Jersey shoreline, sending witnesses ducking for cover, reports the NYT.

The sight-seeing helicopter was carrying five Italian tourists and a pilot, and the plane was carrying a pilot and two passengers, one of whom is believed to have been a child, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at an afternoon press conference.

“This is not going to have a happy ending. This has changed from a rescue to a recovery mission. If anybody had survived, we would have been there,” said Bloomberg.

Both craft are under water and may have sunk to a depth of 30 feet, he told reporters.

Though it was a crystal-clear summer day in New York, visibility is only about two feet in the water, making the recovery process extremely difficult.

The plane, a Piper PA-32, took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, and the helicopter was a Eurocopter AS 350 owned by Liberty Tours, a sightseeing and charter company, the Federal Aviation Administration said. (ANI)

Laser technology creates new forms of metal and enhances aircraft performance

Washington, July 16 (ANI): A team of scientists is using laser light technology to create new forms of metal and enhance aircraft performance.

The laser light technology is being used by AFOSR (Air Force Office of Scientific Research) funded researchers at the University of Rochester to help the military create new forms of metal that may guide, attract and repel liquids and cool small electronic devices.

Dr. Chunlei Guo and his team of researchers for the project discovered a way to transform a shiny piece of metal into one that is pitch black, not by paint, but by using incredibly intense bursts of laser light.

The black metal created, absorbs all radiation that shines upon it.

“With the creation of the black metal, an entirely new class of material becomes available to us, which may open up a whole new horizon for various applications,” said Guo.

“To do this, we looked at the reverse process of light absorption or light radiation and transformed the incandescent lamp into a bulb that glows twice as brightly as a regular light source, while consuming the same amount of energy,” Guo added.

The key to creating this super-filament is an ultra-brief, ultra-intense beam of light called a femtosecond laser pulse.

The laser burst lasts only a few quadrillionths of a second.

That intense blast forces the surface of the metal to form nano-structures and micro-structures that dramatically alter how efficiently light can radiate from the filament.

In addition to increasing the brightness of a bulb, Guo’s process can be used to tune the color of the light as well.

In addition to this research, Guo and his team have been working on creating technology that may enable the Air Force to create an additional kind of metal.

They are able to do this by using the femtosecond laser once again to alter the surface of metal and create unique nano- and micro-scale structures on the metal.

The unique nano-structures which are created from the laser affect the way liquid molecules interact with metal molecules.

The liquid spreads out over the metal because the nano-structures attach themselves to the liquid’s molecules more readily than the liquid’s molecules bond to each other.

The end result is the formation of a new kind of metal that can cool the plane’s electronic brain and heat pumps and allow the craft to retain dominance over any enemy that is also in flight. (ANI)

‘Bride bouquet throwing’ tradition causes plane to crash in Italy

London, July 15 (ANI): The bouquet throwing tradition turned into tragedy at an Italian wedding, after throwing of the flowers caused a plane to crash in Suvereto, near Livorno in western Tuscany.

A couple had rented a small jet to fly over their guests at Montioni park, and drop the bride’s bouquet to women standing below.

But, according to Corriere della Sera, the wedding turned sour when the flowers apparently got sucked back into one of the engines, leading the plane to catch fire and explode, reports The Telegraph.

The aircraft subsequently plunged into a field next to a hostel below, injuring one passenger seriously.

Isidoro Pensieri, who was responsible for throwing the wedding bouquet, suffered “facial and cranial trauma” and multiple fractures to both legs. (ANI)

150 people killed in Iran plane crash

Tehran, July 15 (ANI): Iranian state television on Wednesday said 150 people had died in plane crash in the north western part of the country.

The official IRNA news agency said that the plane was traveling from Tehran to Yerevan in Armenia. The flight crashed 16 minutes after its take-off from the International Imam Khomeini Airport,” Iran’s Aviation Organisation spokesman, Reza Jafarzadeh, said.

According to Sky News, the Caspian Airlines jet came down near Jannatabad village, outside Qazvin city, about 75 miles north west of Tehran.

Qazvin emergency services director Hossein Bahzadpour told IRNA that the plane was completely destroyed and shattered to pieces, and the wreckage was in flames.

According to The Telegraph, Iran has suffered a number of aviation disasters over the past decade. Dozens of people were killed in September 2006 when an airliner came off the runway after landing in the eastern city of Mashhad and burst into flames.

In November 2006, an Iranian military plane crashed on takeoff at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport, killing all 39 people on board, including 30 members of the elite Revolutionary Guards force.

Caspian Airlines is a Russian-Iranian joint venture founded in 1993. (ANI)
