Now a Brit actress claims Polanski sexually assaulted her when she was 16

London, May 15 (ANI): British actress Charlotte Lewis has alleged that Roman Polanski sexually assaulted her when she was 16.

The director is currently fighting to avoid extradition to the US on child sex charges in another case.

Lewis, who appeared in Polanski’s 1986 film Pirates, appeared at a press conference in Los Angeles to claim that she was abused by Polanski “in the worst possible way” at his home in Paris in 1982, while he was a fugitive from his 1977 rape trial in the US.

She claimed that the director “forced himself upon me” in his apartment in Paris.

Allred said that her client was “ready to testify under oath if and when that is necessary”.

Lewis, who read from a prepared statement, said that she had travelled from London to give a statement to prosecutors in Los Angeles and inform that the 1977 alleged rape is not the only incident that Polanski’s lawyers have claimed he was involved in.

“I am also a victim of Roman Polanski. He sexually abused me in the worst possible way when I was just 16 years old, four years after he fled the United States to avoid sentencing for his crimes.

“Mr Polanski knew I was only 16 years old when he met me and forced himself upon me in his apartment in Paris. He took advantage of me and I have lived with the effects of his behavior ever since it occurred,” The Times quoted her as saying.

She added that she wanted him to “get what he deserves” but refrained from mentioning details of the incident or the effect it had had on her life.

Polanski pleaded guilty in 1978 to unlawful sexual intercourse with Samantha Geimer but he fled the country before sentencing.

Polanski was taken into custody in Switzerland in September on a US warrant and remains there under house arrest at his home in Gstaad on 4.5-million-dollar bail. (ANI)

Giant airship can carry 1,000 pounds of payloads up to 20,000-ft above Earth

Washington, May 6 (ANI): A 235-foot prototype Bullet Airship, called The Bullet 580, can carry 1,000 pounds of payloads up to 20,000 feet above Earth.

The inflatable airship, which has a helium-filled tanker and an inner hull filled with ambient air, can fly heavy instruments to high altitudes and remote locations, or serve as an eye-in-the-sky. It will be inflated later this month, for the first time ever.

The airship, a pioneering technological innovation in a long time, will be used as a sky based platform to relay communications and to keep watch on oil spills, forest fires or even pirates at sea.

“We”re kind of like a truck in the sky that can have different types of payloads for different requirements,” Discovery News quoted Mike Lawson as saying. Lawson is the chief executive of Alabama-based E-Green Technologies.

“The bags expand as we go up in altitude,” said Lawson. “If you hit a hard landing with any of our airships, it”s just going to kind of bounce. (ANI)

World record set for largest gathering of pirates

London, May 4(ANI): A mass get together of more than 1,700 people dressed as pirates in one place has set a new Guinness World Record.

1,722 men, women and children formed a part of the crowd, wearing eye patches and fake wooden legs. They assembled on a port side in Brixham, Devon, to set the world record.

This number breaks the previous record of 1,651, set in Portland in America in September last year.

””We feel wonderful. We have broken the world record.

””I am thrilled the town has beaten the record by 250. Everywhere you went there were pirates.”” The Telegraph quoted Karen Barnes, a spokesman for the Brixham pirates.

According to a spokesman for Guinness World Records, the record would be verified in the coming weeks. (ANI)

Mistaken for pirate, Indian fisherman shot off Oman coast

In what appears to be a case of mistaken identity, crew from a passing foreign cargo ship off the coast of Oman fired upon a group of fishermen, fearing they were pirates, and killed one of them. Another fisherman was injured in the incident on Monday morning.

Raju Ambrose, 34, was declared ‘dead on arrival’ by doctors at the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah on the southwestern coast of Oman, said Manpreet Singh, president of the Indian Social Club Salalah. Ambrose, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, is survived by his wife, two teenaged daughters and a seven-year-old son.

Apparently, shots were fired without any warning or provocation from the ship at the group of nearly 75 fishermen who had set off from Salalah on 25 boats. Singh said it appears the ship’s crew mistook the fishermen for pirates.

“The crew opened fire indiscriminately at a place called Sarbatat off the coast of Salalah and two people were injured,” said Singh. “Both the victims were rushed to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah but Ambrose was declared as having been brought dead on arrival. The other fisherman, Sebastian, who was on a different boat, was treated and later discharged.”

An eyewitness said that by the time the fishermen realised that they were being fired upon, it was too late. “We were fishing when we suddenly heard a loud noise that took everyone by surprise,” said Joy, who was on the boat with Ambrose.

“At first, I thought that the sound was coming from the ship. But later, I realised that people on the ship were firing at us. We go out into the deep sea quite often, but such an incident has never happened. In fact, we wave at all the ships that pass by the area.”

Joy added that the fishermen tried to steer the boat away, but in vain. “All of a sudden, a bullet hit Raju and he fell overboard. The other fisherman on the boat, Francis, and I managed to pull him out of the water and then we fled for our lives. We took him to the shore with the help of other fishermen and from there to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital, but it was too late.”

Many cargo ships on the high seas off the Horn of Africa have opted for armed protection after a spate of attacks and hijacks by pirates based in Somalia for ransom.

South Korea sends destroyer after pirates seize tanker

(Reuters) – South Korea has sent a destroyer to intercept a supertanker carrying as much as $170 million worth of crude oil that was seized by Somali pirates, officials said on Monday.

World | South Korea

The South Korean-operated, Singapore-owned Samho Dream, which can carry more than 2 million barrels of crude oil, was hijacked on Sunday en route from Iraq to the United States, in the latest sign the sea gangs are targeting bigger quarry.

“The government has dispatched our Cheong-hae naval unit to the waters of the Indian Ocean, where the ship hijacked by Somali pirates is assumed to be,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

South Korea’s anti-piracy Cheong-hae unit has a destroyer in the area to protect its commercial vessels. Local media said the destroyer, which can travel faster than the supertanker, would be able to reach the ship before it could reach any port.

The tanker’s crew of five South Koreans and 19 Filipinos was taken hostage when it was seized about 1,560 km (970 miles) east of the Somali coast.

“We can’t reach the crew at all,” said an official at SGSM, a subsidiary of Samho Shipping, which operates the tanker.

Texas-based refiner Valero Energy Corp said it was the owner of the crude oil cargo, which was bound for the U.S. Gulf Coast.

“Asian importers including Korean will see little impact as their crude oil imports from the Middle East are moving in the opposite direction. U.S. importers will have problems,” said a trader at the country’s biggest oil refiner SK Energy.

INSURANCE COSTS

Increasingly brazen pirate activity has driven up insurance costs, forced some ships to go around South Africa instead of through the Suez Canal, and secured millions of dollars in ransoms.

A Nairobi-based maritime group said the tanker had been seized by Somali pirates, and a pirate source named Mohamed said the ship was now heading for Haradheere, the port and pirates’ base at which many ships are held during ransom negotiations.

While attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean have become an increasing risk for all vessels in recent years, it is rare for pirates to successfully seize the kind of massive supertankers that carry most Gulf crude to refiners.

The first successful assault on a very large crude carrier (VLCC) occurred in late 2008 when pirates took the Saudi-owned Sirius Star, the biggest ship hijacking to that date.

Another, the Greek-flagged Maran Centaurus, was seized last November and held for nearly two months until a ransom believed to be between $5.5 million and $7 million was paid.

The 319,000 deadweight tonnage Samho Dream, which was built in 2002, is carrying crude oil that could be worth as much as $170 million at current oil prices. It holds the equivalent of more than one day’s worth of Iraqi exports.

Ship used in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ stolen

London, September 14 (ANI): The ship used in the film Pirates of the Caribbean has been stolen.

The vessel was legged from Customhouse Quay in Greenock Renfrewshire.

The raiders also took some cash, an 8x12ft American flag, a survival suit and a life ring.

But the US flag, an immersion suit and a life belt were all later recovered.

The ship, which was built for Marlon Brando’s 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty, has apparently sailed the world as a major tourist attraction.

“It is unbelievable. This ship has sailed all around the world and has never been robbed. But as soon as it gets into Greenock it gets turned over,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The theft took place on Saturday morning, only few hours after arriving to give Scottish fans a rare glimpse on board.

Captain Robin Walbridge – who has skippered it since 1995 – said: “We don’t hold this against the people of Greenock.”

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: “Inquiries are on-going.”

The replica vessel had featured in Pirates of the Caribbean- Dead Man’s Chest. (ANI)

Keira Knightley competes with Scarlett Johansson to be My Fair Lady

London, Aug 30 (ANI): Keira Knightley has been forced to compete with Scarlett Johansson for the role of Eliza Doolittle in a remake of ‘My Fair Lady’.

Knightley was lined up for the part of the Cockney flower seller, played by Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 film, by Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the co-producer.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star confirmed last year that she had auditioned and begun singing lessons, reports the Telegraph.

However, she has since been told that she has an American rival for the part.

Sir Cameron said: “I have two actresses as potential Elizas, one British, the other American. You’d know their names, but I’m not letting on.”

Emma Thompson is writing the script for the film, which Stephen Daldry is expected to direct. Daniel Craig may be Professor Henry Higgins. (ANI)

Self-conscious Johnny Depp hates watching his own movies

Washington, July 2 (ANI): Johnny Depp has revealed that he does not like watching himself in movies, and would like to remain that way.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star said that he avoided seeing himself in the mirror, despite being one of Hollywood’s most admired faces.

“If I can avoid the mirror when I brush my teeth in the morning I will. I find security and safety in the most profound degree of ignorance. If you can just stay ignorant about just about anything you will be OK. Just keep walking forward,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“It is OK to notice things, but to judge things will bog you down, so I don’t like to watch myself in movies. I don’t like to be aware of the product, I like the process. That is not my fault. I didn’t do it. I was there but I didn’t do it,” he added.

The 46-year-old further unravelled the secret behind his looks.

He joked to BANG Showbiz: “I would say the way I look is down to clean living. Most definitely. If you can avoid wine I would do it. And liquor definitely. Most definitely don’t smoke – anything. Stay in your room and watch reality television. That is how I do it.” (ANI)

London, July 02(ANI): Johnny Depp is keen on teaching his children to handle guns.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star, who learnt shooting at the age of six in Kentucky where he grew up, wants to pass on his experience to his kids.

“We would just go out and line up a bunch of cans and shoot with rifles, handguns and at times, submachine guns,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

“When I was a kid it was a controlled atmosphere, we weren’t shooting at humans – we were shooting at cans and bottles mostly. I will most certainly take my kids out for target practice,” he added.

The Hollywood biggie has two children with his long-term partner Vanessa Paradis – Lily-Rose, 10, and Jack, seven. (ANI)

Depp blames fans for turning him into a recluse

London, June 27 (ANI): Johnny Depp has laid the blame of turning into a recluse on his fans’ shoulders, saying he cannot bear being gawked.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star said he would much rather stay home in a “dark room” than be mobbed by fans at red carpet events and film premieres.

“You don’t ever get used to that kind of thing. That’s why I hardly ever leave my house. I don’t go anywhere,” The Daily Express quoted him as telling the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph.

“I understand what it’s about but there’s only so much of that sort of thing a human being can deal with.

“I can’t think of myself in terms of celebrity. It’s just too weird. If the choice is between being gawked at and sitting in a chair in a dark room, I prefer the dark room,” he added. (ANI)

Zoe Saldana likens Johnny Depp to ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Johnny Depp is like ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’, at least that’s what his ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl’ co-star Zoe Saldana thinks.

Saldana has said that the 45-year-old actor goes into a complete personality transformation the moment the camera is switched on, reports the China Daily.

“He is the shyest person I ever met. The moment the camera is turned on, these characters that are within him come out and take control. Then when the director yells, ‘Cut!’ he goes back to being quiet. Very Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” she told Women’s Health magazine.

Dr. Jekyll was a fictional character-created by author Robert Louis Stevenson-who was a mild mannered physician, but after taking a potion he transforms himself into the violent Mr. Hyde.

And although Zoe finds Johnny uneasy in social situations, she has claimed that it is easy to get on with men. (ANI)

Samuel L. Jackson keen to play Andrew Mwanguru

Washington, May 8 (ANI): Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson is keen to play the lead in a film about Andrew Mwangura, a negotiator between pirates and the owners of vessels hijacked off the coast of Africa.

Jackson’s Uppity Films has already collaborated with Andras Hamori’s H20 Motion Pictures to secure life rights of Mwangura.

Mwangura is a journalist and ex-marine engineer who runs the Seafarers’ Assistance Programme, a non-profit group that offers humanitarian aid to all seafarers.

Hamori flew to Mombassa and negotiated a rights deal as Mwangura brokered the freedom of crew and cargo of the Ukrainian ship V.S. Faina for 3.4 million dollars. The price was high because the pirates discovered a secret cache of Russian tanks.

“(Andrew) has the trust of the pirates and the ship owners, and his loyalty is to the kidnapped crews that get caught in the middle of these episodes,” Variety magazine quoted Hamori as saying.

Jackson and Hamori earlier teamed up to produce ‘Formula 51′, and are currently in pre-production of an adaptation of the J.G. Ballard novella ‘Running Wild’ that Jackson will topline. (ANI)

Spanish navy arrests pirates

Madrid – The Spanish frigate Numancia intercepted and arrested nine alleged pirates suspected of attacking the Italian cruise ship MS Melody, media reports said.

A French and an Indian warship, as well as a helicopter and two surveillance planes also participated in the operation, which took place Sunday north of the Seychelles.

The alleged pirates were detected near the position were the attack on the MS Melody took place late Saturday. The attackers abandoned one of their two boats, which was found by the Indian warship Nirdeshak.

The Numancia pursued the pirates and after their arrest handed them over to the Seychelles’ authorities, as the pirates were detained in Seychelles waters.

Six pirates armed with automatic rifles attacked the cruise ship with 991 passengers and 536 crew on board Saturday evening, but the MS Melody, owned by Italy’s MSC Crociere SA was able to fend them off, with security personnel returning fire.

According to Campain Ciro Pinto, the ship was slightly damaged, but none of the passengers suffered any injures. The attack happened about 330 kilometres off the Seychelles on the open sea about 1,100 kilometres from the Somali coast. (dpa)

‘South Park’ targets Susan Boyle

New York, Apr 24 (ANI): Becoming a celebrity comes with a price, even for singing sensation Susan Boyle, who was made the butt of a crass joke on the always crude cartoon show “South Park”.

Boyle, 48, who became a star after her performance on the reality show “Britain’s Got Talent”, was made the subject of the joke in an episode aired on Comedy Central.

In the show, the characters head off to Somalia to become pirates, and the character Ike leaves a good-bye note for his parents, explaining why he’s run away to be a pirate.

“Everyone at school is a f****** idiot and if one more person talks to me about that Susan Boyle performance of Les Miserables I was going to puke my b**** out through my mouth,” the New York Daily News quoted the character as saying.

But the clicks are still coming for her YouTube videos, now numbering high in the tens of millions if not more. (ANI)

German vessel rescues 75 from sinking ship off East Africa

Hamburg – A German container ship rescued 75 passengers from a sinking passenger ship off the coast of Tanzania on Thursday, a spokesman for the German ship’s operators said.

He said the MS Dorian responded to an SOS from the stricken vessel after other ships in the vicinity declined to provide assistance, fearing the call was a trap set by pirates.

The incident happened in an area where pirates have often attacked commercial shipping and held their crews for ransom.

The captain of the German vessel radioed international shipping authorities in London to confirm the identity of the sinking passenger ship, the Ile D’Anjouan.

When he was given the all clear, he set course for the ship, which he reached four hours later, the spokesman for the German shipping operator Komrowski said.

The German ship rescued four children, 11 women and 32 men as well as 28 crew from the Ile D’Anjouan despite a heavy swell. One crewmember of the passenger ship died when he was crushed between a lifeboat and the ship’s hull.

The survivors were being cared for in empty containers on the deck of the 22,000-ton MS Dorian, which later resumed its journey to Zanzibar. (dpa)
