Doubt lingers over Penola bypass

Penola residents are still unsure if a bypass will be built on community land south of the township despite a supreme court hearing on Friday.

Justice Kevin Duggan decided to reserve his judgement after hearing from lawyers for the Penola Ratepayers and Residents Association and the Wattle Range Council.

The resident’s association says pastoral pioneer Alexander Cameron and his forebears left the land, south of Penola for the community to use.

It claims locals do not want it converted to a heavy vehicle bypass, and that Wattle Range Council is trying to push ahead with its plans regardless.

The Association resorted to court action in a bid to reverse the decision.

Residents may have to wait more than a month for the outcome.

Court to hear bypass fight

A battle by Penola residents to block a council bid to build a bypass on public land will be heard in the Supreme Court today.

The Penola Ratepayers and Residents Association says the pastoral pioneer Alexander Cameron and his forebears left the large parcel of land south of the township for the use of the community.

It says no-one in Penola wants to see it converted to a heavy vehicle bypass, but Wattle Range Council is trying to push ahead with its plans regardless.

The association has now resorted to court action in a bid to reverse the decision.

The matter will be heard before Justice Duggan in the Supreme Court today.

Audrey Tautou starring as CoCo Chanel in new biopic

p
Melbourne, June 22 (ANI): ‘Amelie’ star Audrey Tautou is all set to enthral movie buffs with her portrayal of one of the most adored and iconic Frenchwoman- Coco Chanel-in a new biopic titled ‘Coco Avant Chanel’./pp
Chanel was a style pioneer who became an indirect crusader for feminism, leading the way for women about 80 years ago in what was then very much a man’s world./pp
Although it posed a daunting task, Tautou agreed to take on the role and trusted her imagination and lost herself in the character.hus, the result has come in the form of a fantastic French fairytale, which follows the early life of the girl who went on to become the precursor to the modern woman./pp
It was difficult because there was an obligation to run an interpretation that people might already know about Coco Chanel and we have to honour that image and personality, the Daily Telegraph quoted Tautou as saying./pp
She added: There are so many myths about her. That was the most difficult thing with this character. About this period of her life there was so little known – there are no witnesses to that time./pp
She further said: She was so secretive about who she was and I had to start depending on my own opinion creating something from the materials that I had. I had to use my imagination a lot. I had to trust that./pp
Directed by Anne Fontaine, ‘Coco Avant Chanel’ is a beautifully shot film telling the story of the illegitimate, abandoned Gabrielle Coco Chanel, who was taught to sew by nuns in an orphanage before singing for tips to drunken sailors in a run-down bar./pp
And finally she became the biggest names in the fashion industry./pp
Despite being asked by many directors and film houses to play the fashionista, Tautou agreed to Fontaine and Warner Bros only because she found something she liked. /pp
I found that Anne Fontaine had a good feeling and sensitivity for the personality of Coco Chanel, she said./pp
The actress is currently starring as the new face of the biggest-selling perfume of all time-Chanel No. 5./pp
‘Coco Avant Chanel’ opens on Thursday. (ANI)/p

Putin writes column on retaining and firing people

Moscow, May 27 (ANI): Employers wanting to know when and how to retain or fire their employees, should contact Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Turning his hand to writing, Putin’s first ever column for a Russian media outlet will be published on Friday, entitled “Why it’s hard to fire people”.

Written for a niche monthly magazine, Russian Pioneer, it reads as the first admission by Putin of the scale of infighting that raged in the Kremlin during his eight years as president.

“Conflicts within a team, especially within a big team, always arise,” writes Mr Putin, in extracts leaked to a Russian news agency.

“This happens every minute, every second – simply because between people there are always clashes of interest.”

Putin actually played out a delicate balancing act to stop two groups from descending into all-out war.

The scuffles are rarely aired in public and Putin himself has not made direct reference to them before. But now he seems to confirm the most radical of interpretations.

“I can say honestly that while I was president, if I hadn’t interfered in certain situations, in Russia there would long ago ceased to have been a government.”

The magazine’s editor Andrei Kolesnikov said he had not had to make any corrections as the article was written in excellent Russian, albeit with Putin’s famous idiosyncratic expressions in abundance.

For any corporate hotshots looking for tips on how to get rid of underachieving employees in times of economic crisis, the article lays out the “Putin method” of firing, which – on paper at least – sounds surprisingly humane.

“Sometimes from outside it seems like someone should simply be swept aside with a broom, but I can assure you that it’s not always like this. You should never bad-mouth someone behind their back, and it’s impermissible to fire somebody and toss them aside just because somebody has told you something bad about them,” The Telegraph quotes Putin, as saying.

Putin claims that he always gives people the right to fight their corner. (ANI)

Novel procedure enables ‘blind’ man to drive again

London, May 20 (ANI): Nigel Cook had to hand back his driving licence when his sight deteriorated but a new procedure has enabled him to see so well that he is now allowed to drive again.

Cook, a former police officer, suffered from macular degeneration, a condition that obscured his central vision with a dark fog.

However, after surgeons implanted two tiny plastic lenses in each of his eyes, he can now see.

It may not be a cure for the disease, but it overcomes the defect on the retina that causes the blind spot.

“It has changed my day-to-day life beyond recognition,” Sky News quoted Cook as saying.

“It’s so exciting. To be able to do routine things without struggling to work out who it is you are looking at, it’s fantastic,” he added.

The new lenses act together like a telescope, magnifying the image in the eye.

So while the dark central blind spot remains the same size, the image of what patients are looking at is bigger, so they can make out details previously hidden from them.

Andrew Luff has helped to pioneer the technique at the Optegra Eye Hospital.

“Patients who are struggling to carry out activities of daily living may suddenly find it easier to cook meals or find their way around the house,” he said.

“I’ve also had good reports that patients are able to play golf rather better than they could before,” he added. (ANI)

Wayne Rooney ‘to take baldie cure’

London, May 17 (ANI): After years of “slaphead” jibes from team-mates, England star Wayne Rooney has decided to cure his baldness with the help of a controversial drug.

The 100,000 pound-a-week Man United striker is set to gulp down a tablet of Finasteride plus scalp lotion to block hormones causing his hair to fall out.

In sports, until this year, the drug was banned as it could mask steroids.

Now it’s legal and Rooney, 23, has already had a consultation, reports the News of the World.

A pal said: “Wayne’s wanted this so long. It won’t suddenly give him a head of hair but will stop the rot.”

The drug’s pioneer, however, has given one word of caution.

US doctor Robert M. Bernstein said: “One in 500 people can suffer breast enlargement from the treatment.” (ANI)

Now, a motorbike, which runs on air-pressure!

Ludihana, May 13 (ANI): A group of engineering students in Ludhiana has developed an eco-friendly motorbike which runs on air-pressure and doesn’t require fuel.
The 100cc bike equipped with two compressed air cylinders, gives a mileage of 11 miles per hour, which the students have plans to increase with some changes in near future.

Students of Auto Engineering Department at the Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic College in Ludhiana have invented this air-powered bike.

They claim that it is the world’s first 100cc motorcycle powered by air and can help eliminate pollution to a great extent.

“There are bikes that run on batteries, but a lot of time is spent in charging them. In an air bike, you just need to fill air through a compressor. If we develop its air tank and reprocess the exhaust air, the capacity of this air bike can be increased, ” said Akashdeep Singh, one of the innovative students.

“The main advantage is that it is pollution-free as its exhaust is cold air. The Defence personnel can also use the bike, as thermal radiation cameras cannot detect it. Also, the engine of this bike can work underwater and breathes air from its storage tank, which in turn sucks it from the atmosphere,” said Balbir Singh, another student.

Having created the environment-friendly bike, the college students opine that it might not look very hi-tech and sophisticated for now, but it is a step in the right direction for a greener Earth.

“The idea of an air bike was conceived as our energy resources are being depleted day-by-day and pollution level is rising. Keeping all this in mind we have designed a 100cc bike which runs on air pressure technique,” said Jagraj Singh Kaul, Head of the Department, Auto Engineering Department.

Established in 1953, Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic College (GNDPC) is one of the oldest engineering institutions in north India and is a pioneer in technical education.

An ISO-certified institution, the GNDPC is committed to improve technical excellence to achieve global standards.

The polytechnic has set up its own Electrical and Electronics Laboratories Library and Computer Center under World Bank assisted projects.

And the air-powered bike is an innovation that makes the college proud.

In future, Motor companies can perfect this technology and produce air-powered vehicles. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

U.S. forecaster sees 6 Atlantic hurricanes in 2009

The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season is likely to produce six hurricanes, the noted Colorado State University hurricane forecasting team said on Tuesday.

The storm research team founded by hurricane forecast pioneer William Gray said the six-month season beginning on June 1 would likely see 12 tropical storms and predicted that a weak El Nino event could form during that period.

El Nino, an unusual warming of water in the eastern Pacific Ocean, tends to diminish Atlantic hurricane activity by contributing to strong wind shear that can tear apart nascent storms.

The CSU team lowered its forecast from December, when it predicted the 2009 season would see 14 storms and seven hurricanes.

The 2008 Atlantic season was one of the busiest on record, with 16 tropical storms. Eight of those became hurricanes, with sustained winds of 74 mph or higher.

Last season spawned five hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. A record number of consecutive storms hit the United States.

But Cuba got the worst of last season’s destruction. Three major hurricanes hit the Caribbean island, destroying or damaging nearly half a million homes, flattening sugar cane and tobacco fields and causing an estimated $10 billion damage.

The long-term average for the Atlantic hurricane season is about 10 tropical storms and six hurricanes. But experts said a period of heightened Atlantic hurricane activity started around 1995 and was expected to last 25 to 40 years.
