State boards yet to send results to DU

New Delhi, June 5 — Vijay Kandiya’s dream of studying in one of the Delhi University (DU) colleges might not materialise this year. Kandiya, a student of the Haryana board, doesn’t have his mark sheet yet despite the fact that his results are out.

Most state boards declare their results later than ICSE and CBSE. Kandiya, who wants to pursue B.Com (Honours) from a DU college, said: “I am very dejected. The mark sheets may take another 20 days to come.

What should I do?” According to DU admission guidelines, students from the Schedules Tribe and Scheduled Caste are required to bring their SC/ST certificates, along with their two self-attested photographs, school certificate and mark-sheet of senior school certificate examination. With such criteria in place, and just a week to go before the sale of forms closes, SC/ST students like Kandiya from state boards may not be able to apply for admissions to Delhi University this year.

Officials said they couldn’t do much as the boards have not sent the CDs of their results yet to the varsity.

Man who posted naked Emma Watson pics online faces jail

London, June 4 (ANI): The man, who had created digitally altered photographs of Emma Watson and posted them online, is facing jail.

John Cavanagh has pleaded guilty to 19 counts of making an indecent image of a child. He had mocked up eight pictures of the Harry Potter star and pasted it on another picture of an under-aged girl.

“If you look at it you will see that the head is marginally too big for the body (but clearly too big!) and the angle of the face is physically impossible with the body in that position,” The Daily Express quoted Watson’s representative as saying.

The images were discovered on Cavanagh”s computer when officials tried to arrest him – and he has since pleaded guilty.

Judge Anthony Hammond told the 39 year old, “Miss Watson will be very distressed to learn what you have been doing.”

The case has been adjourned for two weeks after Cavanagh dismissed his legal team. (ANI)

Teachers sue paper over Facebook photos

Two teachers are taking legal action against a southern Queensland newspaper for publishing photographs of them taken from the social networking site Facebook.

The Warwick Daily News published an article last month with photos showing the teachers posing in schoolgirl uniforms.

Solicitor Rebecca Jancauskas says the story vilified the teachers.

“The global publication of this story has caused our clients incredible distress and has damaged their personal and professional reputations immeasurably,” she said.

“They’re now a laughing stock in their local community, their students and their peers view them very differently and their professional lives hang in the balance while Education Queensland decide the outcome of their investigation.”

Ms Jancauskas says the case will have wider ramifications for social media sites.

“I think it raises interesting issues that need to be determined, whether it be by a court or by a government, which is do user generated sites such as Facebook have the legal status of a modern day diary or personal correspondence?” she said.

Oz minister dons leather outfit, eight-inch heels for body image campaign

Melbourne, April 4 (ANI): Australian Minister for Youth and Sports Kate Ellis is sporting a new look for her campaign aimed at improving young women’s body image – she slips into a tight leather dress and eight-inch heels.

Ellis, 32, has posed for Grazia mag in her strappy stilettos and two skin-tight outfits.

The snaps show Ellis strutting on a sports-field and athletics track in Adelaide and have appeared alongside an article on readers’ attitudes to their bodies.

“I’m nervous; I haven’t seen the photographs,” News.com.au quoted Ellis as saying.

She added: “That’s an issue we’ve been working really hard on, and if by wearing an outfit I probably wouldn’t ordinarily choose I can help fashion magazines to promote a healthy body image and raise awareness amongst their readers, that must be a good thing.

“I want women to be able to read their fashion magazines if they so choose, and still have self-esteem and confidence at the other end of it. This is about working with the industry.” (ANI)

Olivia Newton John’s lost ex-flame ‘sends voice clues’

Melbourne, April 1 (ANI): Olivia Newton John’s ex-flame Patrick McDermott may finally be found – private detectives have secured recordings of his voice.

McDermott was believed to have been dead when he disappeared after a 2005 fishing trip off the California coast.

However, in 2009 it emerged that he was living in a Mexican village.

And now sources confirm McDermott sent voice recordings to the detectives as part of a deal that requires them to call off his search.

McDermott has been in touch with lead American investigator Phil Klein for months, sending out faxes, photographs and now voice recordings.

Texas-based Klein, who is penning a book on the hunt, recently received “voice imprints” and “proof of life” documents as part of the pact, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The documents were reportedly handed in by a man claiming to be McDermott”s lawyer. (ANI)

Census-2011 to be launched today

New Delhi, Apr 1 (ANI): To create a comprehensive identity database in the country, the Government will launch Census-2011 here today.

The census operation, to be formally launched by President Pratibha Patil, would cover 1.2 billion residents of the country living in all 35 states and Union Territories.

It will be an endeavour to compile the National Population Register (NPR), based on biometric information in which photos of all residents above 15 years old will be featured.

The 2011 Census will also be the forerunner to the launching of the national Unique Identity Number (UID) that is being conceptualized by former Infosys head Nandan Nilekini.

Home Secretary G K Pillai has said after completion of the exercise, the largest census to be attempted in the history of mankind, a National Population Register (NPR) will be created in which the government will have the entire population of the country in one database.

“Once the NPR is completed we will have the photographs of the entire population. First time we will be able to have specific information about the entire usual residents of the country,” he added.

The whole exercise will be conducted in two phases. The first phase from April to September this year will involve house listing and housing census. The second phase will involve population enumeration, which will be carried out between February 9 and 28 next year.

The census would cover all 640 districts, 5767 tehsils, 7742 towns and more than six lakhs villages.

Over 24 crores households will be visited and 1.20 billion people enumerated during this exercise. To carry out this massive exercise more than 2.5 million people will be engaged. (ANI)

Keneally accused of drought PR tour

The New South Wales Opposition is calling on Premier Kristina Keneally to reveal details about the cost of a tour that included Cowra, in the central west, during her first months in office.

The Opposition has dismissed the tour of drought affected regions last December as a public relations exercise.

Opposition spokesman Chris Hartcher says the party lodged a freedom of information request in January asking for detailed costings of Ms Keneally’s trip.

But he says the request is now 20 days overdue because the Government is refusing to release the information.

“It was us who was footing the bills every time Kristina Keneally smiled at the camera, it was us the taxpayer who footed the bill every time Kristina Keneally published leaflets showing photographs of herself and what a great job she’s doing but she’s not prepared to disclose to the taxpayers of NSW how much they actually paid for the privilege,” he said.

The Premier says she makes no apologies for visiting regional communities.

She has confirmed the Government will release the financial details of her drought visit when the full receipts and costs are available.

Cash grab as armoured truck drops $100k

Americans made a frenzied grab for a bag of cash after more than $US100,000 ($110,247) tumbled out the back of an armoured truck onto a street in Ohio.

Local media reported the bag split open after it fell off the back of a vehicle and the driver drove away without noticing.

People saw the cash blowing down the street in a Columbus suburb and a mad scramble for the greenbacks ensued.

“People were jumping out of their vehicles,” one witness told NBC4 news.

“Like when you throw some fish in and you’ve got a school of piranhas and they haven’t eaten for a long time. It was funny.”

Another witness said people were laughing, smiling and taking as much as they could carry.

Workers at a nearby flower shop helped police gather the remaining money in boxes.

Many people later took some of the cash to the police station.

But only about $US10,500 ($11,582) was recovered by the end of the day, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

“We’re hoping that more people do the right thing,” an officer told the newspaper.

Police are examining surveillance camera video and photographs from cell phone cameras to try to track down people who grabbed the money.

Court jails man over child porn collection

A Ballarat man thought to have one of the biggest child pornography collections in Australia has been jailed.

The County Court was told more than 900,000 items of child pornography were found in Stacy Livitsanis’ possession when Customs’ officials raided his Ballarat home, in central Victoria, in July last year.

The material included photographs, video files, text files and DVDs.

The court was told Livitsanis had also written a number of child pornography stories which he saved on his computer and published on a website.

During a later interview, he told police he bought a new laptop computer with child pornography images on it.

He pleaded guilty to eight child pornography related charges and was sentenced to three years and nine months’ jail.

‘Padma’s baby daddy wants to spend more time with daughter’

New York, Mar 17 (ANI): Adam Dell, the alleged father of Padma Lakshmi’s daughter, wants to spend more time with his baby, it has emerged.

The venture capitalist has apparently put photographs of his daughter, Krishna, all over his house in Austin, Texas.

And Dell is believed to be in talks with the model-cum-TV host for visitation rights, weekends and vacations with the little girl.

According to a source, Dell told guests at a barbecue at his home “how excited he was to raise her, but that Padma wasn”t being entirely accommodating,” reports the New York Post.

A friend of Lakshmi sniped back, saying: “An agreement was made with the biological father that was very fair. It”s unfortunate if anything inappropriate is being said.” (ANI)

Population centre to be signposted

A decision has been made on the design of a sign to mark the geographic centre of Australia’s population.

Last November, the Mayor of the Central Darling Shire Council, Ray Longfellow, requested signs be erected at the entrance of the town to mark it as Australia’s population centre.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the location of the geographic centre is about 50 kilometres east of Ivanhoe.

The community has chosen to erect a sign with a picture of a heart and the slogan ‘I’m in the Heart of Australians’.

A cut-out space in the middle of the heart will allow residents and tourists to place their head through the hole for photographs.

Two signs will be erected on the Cobb Highway. A line of souvenirs to sell is also being considered.

AFL lashes out at Bingle’s legal team

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has taken a swipe at Lara Bingle’s legal team as the nude photo saga continues to drag on.

Demetriou said the AFL had interviewed Brendan Fevola, who allegedly circulated the nude photo of Bingle, but the league’s numerous requests to talk to Bingle have so far been unsuccessful.

“The legal team acting on behalf of Lara Bingle haven’t been co-operative,” a clearly annoyed Demetriou said in Perth on Friday.

“We’ve made several requests to interview Ms Bingle but they haven’t agreed to those requests, that’s their prerogative.

“I’m not sure why they wouldn’t want to.

“They are pretty quick to get into the media and say all sorts of things and even tee off at the AFL but I would suggest that if they are serious then they make available Mrs Bingle.

“I know that Adrian Anderson’s team interviewed Brendan, they understand his position and that’s why they are keen to interview Ms Bingle.”

Demetriou said he had no idea how long the investigation could drag on given Bingle’s newly-appointed agent Max Markson was hampering the AFL’s efforts.

“I think Max Markson can determine how [long] that goes, he’s going beautifully,” Demetriou said sarcastically.

“He seems to be pulling all the strings and calling the shots so we’ll leave it to him.

“We treat the matter very seriously, particularly because we educate all of our clubs about taking photographs and distributing without people’s consent.

“It’s part of our respect and responsibility program, that’s why we’ve taken this up and that’s why we are keen to interview Ms Bingle.”

Finding Mallory’s camera may reveal whether he was first to climb Mount Everest

Washington, March 13 (ANI): Reports indicate that a veteran Everest researcher is trying to find George Mallory’s camera, which may contain photographic evidence of whether he and Andrew Irvine were the first to summit Mount Everest.

According to a report in Discovery News, the lost camera that researcher Tom Holzel wants to find, is a Vestpocket Kodak that belonged to George Mallory, the climber who died just 2,030 feet below Everest’s summit in 1924.

If the camera is intact, there is a possibility its photographic film is still recoverable and could contain vital images that could settle one of the great unsolved exploration mysteries of the 20th century, namely, were Mallory and Andrew Irvine the first to summit Everest or did they die painfully close to the top?

When Mallory’s body was recovered in 1999, his camera was not among the artifacts found on his remains.

This has caused veteran Everest researcher Holzel and others to speculate that the camera was being carried by his climbing partner.

Irvine’s body has not been recovered, but Holzel is pretty certain he knows where it is.

“Two people have seen the body and it’s near where they were,” said Holzel, referring to a possible body he has spotted in survey photographs of the same part of the mountain. “I’m about 85 percent confident in this one,” he added.

If Holzel can get an expedition funded and on Everest next year, he’s hoping to find the body.

If it’s actually Irvine, they’ll need a bit more luck to find the camera.

Even then, their hard work will be only half over.

The camera has to be recovered without ruining what images might exist on the film.

Just how to do that has been studied exhaustively by Eastman Kodak experts, who have provided Holzel with a series detailed procedures to follow.

The good news is that Everest’s frozen, dry conditions are the best for preserving film.

The bad news is that depending on how the camera is protected, the images may have been degraded over the years by cosmic rays.

“At the end of the day, there’s going to have to be a lot of luck,” said Everest climber and guide Eric Simonson. “The stars are going to have to line up,” he added. (ANI)
