Google confesses collecting private data from unprotected wi-fi networks

London, May 15 (ANI): Google has confessed that it has wrongly collected people’s data sent via unencrypted wi-fi networks in the past three years.

Google’s privacy breach came to the fore after German authorities asked to audit the data the company”s Street View cars gathered as they took photos viewed on Google maps.

Google said that during a review it found it had “been mistakenly collecting samples of payload data from open networks”.

The admission will increase concerns about potential privacy breaches.

And the data could include parts of an email, text or photograph or even the website someone may be viewing.

However, Google, in a blogpost, said that as soon as it became aware of the problem it grounded its Street View cars from collecting wi-fi information and segregated the data on its network.

And now, the company is asking for a third party to review the software that caused the problem and examine precisely what data had been gathered.

“Maintaining people”s trust is crucial to everything we do, and in this case we fell short,” the BBC quoted Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research, as saying.

“The engineering team at Google works hard to earn your trust – and we are acutely aware that we failed badly here,” he added.

Google said that the problem dated back to 2006 when “an engineer working on an experimental wi-fi project wrote a piece of code that sampled all categories of publicly broadcast wi-fi data.

“That code was included in the software the Street View cars used and “quite simply, it was a mistake”, said Eustace.

“This incident highlights just how publicly accessible, open, non-password protected wi-fi networks are today,” he added.

However, Dan Kaminsky, director of penetration testing for security firm Ioactive, said that Google collected the data unintentionally.

“This information was leaking out and they picked it up. If you are going to broadcast your email on an open wi-fi, don”t be surprised if someone picks it up,” he said. (ANI)

Tendulkar gives his fans a tweet

India’s star batsman Sachin Tendulkar, revered by millions of fans in his home country and across the world, has joined the ranks of the “Twitterati” on microblogging site Twitter.

The 37-year-old opened his account sachin_rt on Tuesday with the post: “Finally the original SRT is on twitter n the first thing I’d like to do is wish my colleagues the best in the windies.”

Tendulkar, nicknamed the “Master Blaster”, is recovering from injury and not part of India’s squad taking part in the World Twenty20 tournament in the Caribbean, which began last week.

But the record-breaking cricketer, considered one of the sport’s greatest ever players, said he was struggling with the new technology, although he managed to post a photograph of himself.

“My kids r happy that I m finally on twitter. They hv been tryin 2 get me 2 join twitter or facebook for ages.I m still gettin the hang of it,” he added.

In a sign of his popularity, Tendulkar had more than 41,000 followers by mid-afternoon Wednesday, including leading Bollywood stars, just 16 hours after his first “tweet”.

Last week the sporting icon had a new variety of mango named after him.

A number of people said they had specifically joined Twitter to follow Tendulkar’s posts.

One, using the name shine82h, commented: “GOD IS ON TWITTER,cant ask for more ! BIG FAN ! Wish you all the best ! You sir are truly THE GREATEST!”

Zettabytes overtake petabytes to become largest digital measurement unit

London, May 4 (ANI): It’s goodbye petabytes and hello zettabytes – courtesy the tremendous growth of the “digital universe”.

At the moment, the total digital output of humanity stands at 8,000,000 petabytes. But owing to explosion of social networking, online video, digital photography and mobile phones, it is expected to pass 1.2 zettabytes this year, according to estimates.

One zettabyte is equal to one million petabytes, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 individual bytes.

This amount of digital content, which can be either generated or stored, is equivalent to all the information that could be stored on 75bn Apple iPads, or generated by everyone in the world posting messages on the micro-blogging site Twitter constantly for a century.

The latest figures were released in the annual survey of the world’s digital output by IDC, the technology consultancy. According to the survey, the digital universe is forecast to expand by a factor of 44 over the next decade.

“There has been mammoth growth in the types of media that make up the digital universe.

“A huge increase in video and digital photography – in the old days people would take one photograph, now they can knock off 20 photos and rather than store just one, people store all 20. Then there is the fact that the number of devices where information can be generated and stored has also increased,” The Telegraph quoted Adrian MacDonald as saying. He is the vice president of EMC, the IT firm that sponsors the survey. (ANI)

Oz beauty pageant for kids won’t be ‘over the top’, say organisers.

Washington, Apr 7 (ANI): Organisers of a beauty pageant for children in Melbourne have claimed that their competition will not be ‘over the top’ like some controversial US TV shows.

Little Miss Bayside Pageant will see tiny tots model swimwear and be judged on their smile and posture.

Organisers of the contest, which award tiaras to winners, have insisted that it will not be “over the top” like US versions where pre-schoolers are plastered with fake tan, make-up and big hair.

The June pageant, which costs an entry fee of 100 dollars, will judge girls and boys up to 13 on modelling, talent, how they photograph and answers to a series of questions.

Organiser Laura Buik said US shows Toddlers and Tiaras and Baby Beauty Queens had sparked interest here.

But she said make-up was optional at the Miss Bayside pageant and “we’re not encouraging the diamantes and that sort of stuff “.

“When it comes to the formal wear, we’re looking more for like a party dress,” the Courier Mail quoted Buik as saying.

“It’s more about the kids getting up and having a go. They get a tiara . . . but the main prizes are the modelling contract and a three-day workshop,” she added. (ANI)

Lady Gaga posts topless birthday picture on Twitter

Melbourne, Mar 26 (ANI): ‘Poker Face’ singer Lady Gaga is said to have pulled another stunt, by posting what appears to be a topless photograph of herself on her Twitter page.

Gaga, 23, who will celebrate her birthday on March 28, posed with a red teacup in the photo.

“Nothing like a communist-red teacup to make for the perfect Birthday gift,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as writing alongside the picture.

She also went on to quote the supposed final words of Communist Manifesto co-author Karl Marx.

“Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough,” she stated. (ANI)

Obama signs executive order on abortion

US president Barack Obama has signed an executive order barring taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions, keeping a pledge he made to help push his health care reform through Congress.

The White House issued a photograph of Mr Obama signing the measure in the Oval Office, surrounded by pro-life Democrats, whose votes were crucial in the 216-212 passage of the historic health bill.

In negotiations before Sunday’s vote in the House, Mr Obama’s executive order won over the holdouts.

Mr Obama’s measure does not alter existing legislation on abortion, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs stressed, adding that the president maintained his support for a woman’s right to choose to terminate her pregnancy.

Mr Gibbs said the executive order “ensures that health care, the law the president signed, maintains the status quo of the federal law prohibiting the use of federal dollars for abortion”.

‘UFO’ pictured above Sydney

Melbourne, March 24 (ANI): Another UFO sighting has been reported from Sydney where a mum of two captured the mysterious object in a photograph.

Fiona Hartigan is convinced what she saw was a UFO and she says the snaps she took are proof enough.

According to Hartigan, the incident took place on Sunday evening when she was about to click a few sunset photos.

“As I was about to take the picture this black object appeared and then it started to move,” News.com.au quoted her, as saying.

She went on: “It started off about 800m away but it came closer – to about 400m – and then two other little round things appeared from this bright orange light above.

“There was no noise. It was calm and peaceful but it was very weird.”

Hartigan claims the main UFO then flew away above Governor Macquarie Drive at Chipping Norton, with the smaller ones whizzed in the opposite direction.

She said: “I don”t know how to explain it – I”m still totally bewildered.”

Talking about the sighting and the photos UFO Research NSW spokesman Doug Moffett said: “It could be some electrical anomaly that no one has ever seen, it could be an extra-terrestrial craft, it could be something else.

“There does appear to be a blur around the image, which could just be the way it”s shaped, or – and this is pure speculation – it could be due to its propulsion system.”

He added: “Whatever the case, it”s an opportunity to learn something new.”

Photo of Jesse James making Nazi salute to go on sale

Washington, Mar 22 (ANI): A photo that shows actress Sandra Bullock’s estranged husband Jesse James making the Nazi salute is about to go on sale.

The photo, reputedly taken two years ago, shows James, 40, wearing an SS hat that looks near identical to the one Michelle “Bombshell” McGee wore in her notorious Nazi photos, reports Radar Online.

The West Coast Choppers CEO can also be seen holding two fingers under his nose, in a symbol that is clearly an imitation of Adolph Hitler’s moustache.

A model aircraft, which appears to sport similar markings to the aircraft the Nazi regime flew during World War 2, can also be seen in the background of the explosive photos.

The photograph is being shopped to multiple media outlets. (ANI)

MP Slipper angry over ‘snooze’ photo

A Federal Liberal backbencher has complained that another MP has breached parliamentary privilege by taking a photo of him in the parliamentary chamber.

The picture showed the Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper, apparently asleep during the Indonesian president’s speech last week.

Mr Slipper says another MP took the picture and emailed it anonymously to the Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper, which published it.

He has asked for the matter to be referred to the privileges committee.

He says he was sitting adjacent to the chief Opposition whip, Alex Somlyay, and points out the photo was taken by someone in that position.

“It is clear to me Mr Speaker that a close examination of the photograph in the Sunshine Coast daily makes it clear it was taken from very close to where I was sitting from my right from the same level on which I was sitting and that there were no other persons between me and the photographer,” he said.

“I also seek a forensic examination of the photograph by a qualified person to ascertain formally from which seat the photograph was taken and thus to confirm the identity of the culprit.”

The House of Representatives Speaker, Harry Jenkins, says he will consider the issue.

“The taking of such a photograph would indeed be outside the guidelines for photography in the chamber and it would also be contrary to the advice that has been given to members about the use of mobile devices in the chamber,” he said.

‘Superman’ Berlusconi can’t be felled by kryptonite

London, March 17 (ANI): Silvio Berlusconi has again indulged himself with self-praise – his publishing company has now unveiled a book that lauds the Italian Premier as ”Superman”.

The book titled “Love always wins over envy and hatred” has been released by Berlusconi’s firm Mondadori, ahead of the crucial regional elections at the end of March.

The cover photograph shows Berlusconi looking much younger than his 73 years, while the book includes some of the 50,000 messages Italians sent him after a mentally ill man hurled a souvenir statuette at his face in Milan last December, breaking his nose and knocking off his two teeth.

Talking about the PM, the book quotes a supporter as saying: “Even with kryptonite they couldn”t knock you down!”

“We are all with you, great Silvio. You are the engine of our country,” the Telegraph quoted a woman identified as Eleonora, as saying.

A man said: “On seeing you covered in blood, my wife grabbed her hair and sobbed as she yelled ”My Madonna, save Silvio!”” (ANI)

Bingle lawyers return serve to AFL

Lara Bingle’s legal team has hit back at the AFL, saying the league would not accept the original complaint over the Brendan Fevola photo saga.

On Friday AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou publicly accused Bingle’s lawyers of being uncooperative while also taking a swipe at her agent Max Markson.

Having already spoken to Fevola over the infamous nude photograph, Demetriou said the AFL had “made several requests to interview Ms Bingle but they haven’t agreed to those requests, that’s their prerogative”.

But law firm Kennedys, who are representing Bingle, has released a statement in response attacking the AFL.

“She is not the one under investigation and she made her complaint publicly and clearly this week in a national women’s magazine,” the statement, which was released in point form, read.

“Further, since the AFL refused to accept her public complaint, we made the complaint on her behalf to the AFL.

“We became very concerned when the AFL would not even accept the complaint we made on her behalf before they proceeded with their investigation.”

The release went on to state that the firm had sent two statutory declarations on Saturday before, curiously, demanding the AFL release the two declarations – plus any correspondence with Fevola.

“Since the AFL wants to conduct their investigation in public, we now call on the AFL to release to the public those statutory declarations, Brendan Fevola’s statement and the email correspondence with us since they started their so-called ‘investigation’,” it read.

“Lara Bingle did not take the photo, did not keep it, did not circulate it and did not publicise it – and in these circumstances the AFL still demanded that she make herself available to a tape-recorded interview by their investigator.

“It is not surprising that we have acted to protect Lara from this interrogation by the AFL when she has been subjected to two weeks of one of the most disgraceful and unprecedented attacks on character in this country.

“It was completely insensitive and oppressive for the AFL to pursue her in this manner at this time.”

The statement also said the AFL had “a clear conflict of interest” and the investigation of Fevola should be referred to an independent body or person, “preferably a woman, such as a judge or senior counsel”.

Bingle’s lawyers then ended their statement by saying: “Finally, we are not seeking publicity by this media release.

“This is intended to be a response to the publicity sought by the AFL for its investigation. It is intended to address serious matters that needed to be said for the record.”

Cindy Crawford blackmailer jailed

A man has been sentenced to two years in jail after trying to extort $US100,000 from Cindy Crawford.

Edis Kayalar, 26, surrendered to German authorities in November after he was charged in Los Angeles with trying to extort money from Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, over a photo of their seven-year-old daughter gagged and bound to a chair.

The photograph was reportedly taken by the girl’s nanny when they were playing “cops and robbers”.

According to court documents in Los Angeles, it fell into the hands of Kayalar – a friend of the nanny’s.

Judge Joachim Spieth noted that Kayalar had admitted asking for the money even though he claimed it was not extortion, rather an appeal “to cover costs” for his attempt to warn Crawford that the nanny was not a good influence.

“The attempted extortion was at an advanced stage and failed,” Judge Spieth told the court in the south-west town of Kirchheim unter Teck.

Kayalar – who is German – contacted Crawford last year and sought to use the photo to get money from the couple, allegedly saying tabloids would pay a lot.

Crawford and Gerber contacted authorities, prompting Los Angeles police to launch a criminal investigation.

Kayalar was arrested in September and deported to Germany for being in the US illegally.

In November, he again phoned Crawford and Gerber and demanded $US100,000, which led to him being charged with extortion.

Nude photo distribution by Brendan Fevola ”violated” me: Lara Bingle

Melbourne, Mar 8 (ANI): Lara Bingle has confessed that she felt ”exploited” after ex-flame AFL star Brendan Fevola released her nude photo.

Bingle is suing Fevola for circulating her nude picture taken in a shower.

The pic was published in last week”s Woman”s Day magazine.

However, Bingle has come forward to do a “tell-all” interview with the same magazine, for a reported 200,000 dollars fee.

Her agent said that she would be donating the amount to charity.

“When I found out about it, I just felt like I had been violated,” News.com.au quoted her as telling the magazine.

She added: “I do blame him (Fevola). It was a complete betrayal at a time of my life when I trusted him. I was vulnerable and it was a total mistake to trust him.”

Bingle revealed she is suing Fevola, since she wants to send a “strong message” to others not to exploit women.

She added: “It is important for me to try and restore my own sense of dignity and self-respect by taking control of the situation and showing everyone that it is not cool or funny to send an unauthorised nude photo of someone to your friends.

“I also feel exploited and compromised by the release of a photograph I never gave permission to him to take – and one he promised he had deleted when he realised how upset I was that he would do that.

“It should never have been taken in the first place. It was definitely an invasion of my privacy and I had always understood it had been deleted.”

Bingle is currently dating Australian cricketer Michael Clarke. (ANI)

China should allow international agencies to see Panchen Lama: Tibetan parliament

Dharamsala, Mar 8 (ANI): The Speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, Pempa Tsering, has said that China should allow international agencies to see the Panchen Lama, the successor of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

Tsering was reacting to a statement made by the new Chinese-appointed governor of Tibet, Padma Choling, an ethnic Tibetan appointed in January on Sunday that the Panchen Lama is safe and is living in Tibet.

“If they (Chinese) are really serious about what they are saying, I think they should allow international agencies, neutral agencies to see how he (Panchen Lama) is staying, what kind of studies he is getting. And, we are for sure that he is not in Tibet, that”s for sure, must be somewhere in China, if he is alive, that we don”t know. So, there”s no evidence and as long (as) there is no evidence we don”t see anything new in what they have stated so far,” Tsering said.

The Dalai Lama”s selection of the Panchen Lama, a six-year-old boy, led to Beijing swiftly picking him up and taking him away.

Human rights groups dubbed the child as “the world”s youngest political prisoner”.
Tsering further said that if such statements about the Panchen Lama are made by China, then they should be supported with evidence.

“We have always been demanding that if they are making such statements it should come up with evidence, it should come with proof, at least have some photographs to say that this is Panchen Lama and he is studying and so. Even if they can”t divulge where he is studying, at least they can say that he is safe and there should be some photograph or evidence or if possible there should be neutral people to go and meet him and his family,” he said.

China has defended its iron-fisted rule in Tibet, saying not only did it free a million Tibetan serfs but it also poured billions of dollars into the Himalayan region for development. (ANI)

Ballots for Afghan elections were pre-marked for Karzai: The Guardian

Kabul, Sep 19 (ANI): Some ready-to-cast ballot papers for Afghanistan’s presidential election were pre-marked for Hamid Karzai, footage obtained by the Guardian has revealed.

Ballot papers pre-marked for Hamid Karzai that were seized by monitors. The ballots appear to be stamped with the monitors’ seal and ready to cast. The monitors filmed then destroyed the papers to stop them being used.

The footage was taken by two election monitors who inspected a book of 100 ballot papers, which were still stitched together, as they were intended to arrive at the polling station in rural Afghanistan.

“But, instead of being pristine, ready for the voter to make his or her mark, each paper bears a large blue tick next to the name of one candidate: Hamid Karzai,” the report says.

“We found it the day after the elections. They were trying to put it in one of the [ballot] boxes but didn’t have time, so we took it home and filmed it. If we had given it back to the election committee they would have used it again, so we burned it,” the paper quoted one monitor, as saying.

Numerous other evidences have surfaced not only in support of the vote-rigging theory, but also to suggest that the idea of the election being fair was laughable in Afghanistan.

An election official showed a photograph of a man marking a big pile of ballot papers in the name of Hamid Karzai. Another picture shows a pile of election ID cards spread in front of an unidentified man wearing black shoes, the report says.

“This man brought 120 cards and he used each of them to vote three times. I thought I would give the pictures to the election committee. But they were all working for Karzai,” said the official, who fled to Kabul fearing that he might have been caught taking pictures.

“Everyone was cheating in my polling station. Only 10 per cent voted, but they registered 100 per cent turnout. One man brought five books of ballots, each containing 100 votes, and stuffed them in the boxes after the elections were over,” he added.

According to the paper, the vote had come down to a battle of budgets, with agents for both Karzai and his rival, Abdullah Abdullah, giving money in exchange for votes.

“Karzai’s men were paying 1,000 Afghani per family and Abdullah’s were paying 1,500 Afghani,” villagers of Ahmad Aba district in Paktiya region said. (ANI)

Lennon’s ‘Jesus’ quote mag sold for $12713

London, September 18 (ANI): A magazine in which John Lennon had scribbled that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus has been sold for 12,713 US dollars.

In a 17 day online auction run by RR Auction of Amherst, New Hampshire, an orthopaedic surgeon at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Centre made the winning bid.

The September 1966 issue of Datebook has a photograph of the late musician with his sign “John C Lennon” above it, reports the Daily Express.

He had said in the magazine: “Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that; I’m right and I will be proved right.

“We’re more popular than Jesus now. I don’t know which will go first – rock’n'roll or Christianity.”

The statement had even led to anti-Beatles sentiment in the United States. (ANI)

George Harrison exhibition cancelled after rare photo theft

Washington, Sep 4 (ANI): An exhibition for paying tribute to the late ‘Beatles’ star George Harrison in his hometown has been cancelled after a rare signed photograph of the star was stolen.

The ‘For George’ tribute opened in early August in his native Liverpool, England.

And on display were memorabilia and rare artefacts from the musician’s career.

However, the organisers of the event had to shut the gallery after one of the prized exhibits, worth 1,600 dollars, was stolen by a visitor.

“I want to make it clear that 10,000 people have seen this exhibition and it is only one person who has done this. I do not want it to end on a negative note,” Contactmusic quoted Denise Theophilus, who helped put together the event, as saying. (ANI):

Exhibition glorifying female Palestinian bombers generates outrage

Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): Organizers of an art exhibition had to take down portraits depicting female Palestinian suicide bombers as the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus after the families of those killed or wounded in the attacks protested.

The controversial exhibition, which featured the work of artists Galina Bleich and Liliah Check, displayed a series of paintings of the bombers rendered to look like Renaissance-era portraits of Catholic saints, The Jerusalem Post reports.

The exhibition opened at Sokolov House press center in Tel Aviv agreed to take the portraits down, but another section – sand and dirt that had been taken from the scenes of the bombings and spread out across canvas – remained on the gallery’s walls.

The victims’ families expressed outrage over both the content of the exhibition and the fact that the headquarters of the Israeli Journalists Association, had agreed to show it.

Dalit Levy, whose 17-year-old stepdaughter Rachel was killed in a suicide bombing as she shopped at the Supersol supermarket in Jerusalem’s Kiryat Hayovel, arrived outside Sokolov House on Thursday afternoon with an Israeli flag draped over her shoulders.

“You want art?” she asked a group of reporters who had gathered around her. “Here’s art!” she said, before spilling a can of red paint next to a photograph of her stepdaughter and two memorial candles. “This is the blood of our children!”

Almagor, The Association for Terror Victims in Israel, also issued a stern response to the exhibit, and threatened to take legal action if the portraits were not taken down.

“We’ve contacted the attorney-general and asked him to take legal action against the exhibition’s representatives. Any action that strengthens or praises the murderous acts of terrorism is violating the law and hurting the general public by legitimising the murders,” he said.

Indor said his group was worried the artists would try to show the exhibit elsewhere.

“We’ve been in contact with the artists, and made it clear that we want them to add information to the material so that people will understand that this is not promoting terrorism, but against it,” he said. (ANI)

Nude Jackie Kennedy pic found among Andy Warhol’s possessions

London, August 21 (ANI): A nude picture of former US First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis has been discovered in the pile of King of Pop Art Andy Warhol’s possessions.

The snap, which apparently shows the wife of John F. Kennedy skinny-dipping, was said to have been signed “For Andy, with enduring affection, Jackie Montauk”, a reference to the painter’s beach front estate in Montauk.

Archivists sieving through 610 cardboard boxes, filing cabinets and a shipping container belonging to Warhol, who is considered a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art, found the photograph, reports the Telegraph.

Researchers working for the Andy Warhol Foundation also found a piece of crusty wedding cake and 17,000 dollars in cash amongst other items.

Matt Wrbican, who has been going through the artist’s things since 1991, said: “He really didn’t like organisation and there would be several boxes going at a time.”

He added: “The only rooms that looked like a normal house were the bathroom and the kitchen.” (ANI)
