Bihar told to speed up issuing voter cards

Patna, May 31 (IANS) A three-member team of the Election Commission (EC) visiting Bihar Monday asked officials to speed up the process of issuing voter identity cards ahead of the assembly polls in October-November this year, official sources said.

The team headed by Election Commissioner S.Y. Qureshi discussed the election preparedness with government officials here, sources said.

‘The EC team reviewed election preparedness with divisional commissioners and district magistrates and the progress on voter identity cards,’ a source said.

The EC has already instructed the state officials to issue voter cards to at least 85 percent of the voters. The final list of electoral roll is to be published June 15, sources said.

According to official figures, there are 54,324,000 eligible voters in Bihar but only 40,171,917 have photo identity cards.

Navin Chawla says zero tolerance on violations of model code of conduct

Chennai, Mar 12 (ANI): Election Commissioner Navin Chawla today said that there would zero tolerance on violations of the model code of conduct.

Speaking after a review meeting on the poll preparedness for the coming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, he said, “The commission would not tolerate any deviation in this. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure clean and transparent general elections.”

Commending the state election authorities for doing a meticulous job, Chawla said over 97 percent achieved in photo identity cards and photo rolls in the state, is highest in the country.

He instructed the authorities to take steps to cover remaining three percent of population so that they are provided with some form of identification.

Chawla appealed to the electorate to check and ensure their names were there in the electoral rolls, while asking the candidates and political parties to abide by the model code of conduct and not to deface public walls and resort to graffiti on the walls of private premises.

Cautioning political parties on spending, he said income tax officials would be overseeing poll expenditure. (ANI)

Eighty two percent voters to use photo I-cards for Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi, Mar 5 (ANI): For the first time, nearly 82 percent electors will use the Photo identity cards for polling in forthcoming General Elections.

Out of 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, 522 constituencies and the legislative constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Orissa will go to the polls on the basis of the photo electoral rolls.

Nearly 77 percent eligible voters would have their photographs in the rolls.

Over 90 percent electors have been issued voters cards with photographs in fourteen states and 90 percent electors have their photographs printed in the electoral rolls in thirteen states.

This will facilitate easy identification and prevent impersonation.

The concept of photo electoral roll was introduced in 2005 when it was tested as a pilot project during the revision of rolls in all the constituencies of Kerala and Puducherry, two constituencies of Haryana and in one constituency each in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

On the successful completion of the pilot project, the subsequent elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Kerala and Puducherry in 2006, the 2007 elections of Himachal Pradesh and the 2008 legislative elections in Meghalaya, Tripura, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Delhi were also conducted using Photo Electoral Rolls. Govt. is committed to help weavers to meet challenges of globalisation: Vaghela

New Delhi, Feb 17 (ANI): Union Textiles Minister Shankersinh Vaghela today said that the Government is committed to helping handloom weavers meet the challenges of globalization and modernization.

While laying the foundation stone of the “Handloom Marketing Complex” here, Vaghela said, “Our initiatives cover all aspects of production and raw material supply, design and technical assistance, training and skill up-gradation, marketing and welfare of weavers”.

He said that the Government has introduced five handloom schemes for overall development of the sector and welfare of the weavers in the XIth Plan.

Welcoming the setting up of the complex, Delhi’s Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that it is a gift to Delhi shoppers because it is completely devoted to weavers to showcase their handloom products.

Addressing the function, the Minister of State for Textiles, E.V.K.S. Elangovan that the Government is striving to provide maximum social security to the weavers and their families.

“Our endeavour is to empower the weaver, in terms of finance, technology, information, marketing support and so on, so that he gets self-sustainable employment,” he said.

“Conducting the “Third Census for Handlooms and Issue of Photo Identity Cards to eligible Handloom Weavers” across the country is one of the major initiatives taken by the Government. The work on third All India Handloom Census is likely to be completed by December 2009. Photo Identity Cards will be issued to all the eligible handloom weavers enumerated during the Census operations,” he added.

The new Marketing Complex, meant exclusively for handloom fabrics, represents various parts of India. It is being set up on 1.779 acres of land at Janpath, New Delhi and the project will cost Rs. 42 crores.

The complex will have a double two bay basement parking space and will start functioning tentatively by October 2010. It will house products from some of the best handloom producing organizations such as Handloom House Co-optex, APCO, CCIC and other reputed organizations.

It will also have space for a Dilli Haat type atmosphere wherein weavers from throughout the country will be invited for a 14 days period to exhibit their fabrics and sell their products. Besides this, there will be a restaurant, conference hall and other facilities.

The handloom sector is the second largest employment generating sector in our country, next only to agriculture, employing about 65 lakh people, out of which about 60 per cent are women.

Therefore, the contribution of handwoven textiles to employment, textile production and export earnings is significant not only from an economic angle but also from a social angle. (ANI)
