‘Beasted’ Broad backs ‘fearless’ England for Ashes, World Cup glory

London, June 11(ANI): England fast bowler Stuart Broad has said that he spent his time out of the national team on working on his fitness, and announced that he is now prepared for the Ashes and the World Cup.

Broad, who was dropped for the two-Test series against Bangladesh, was named in the 13-man ODI squad to play England in a five-match series.

“I’ve spent the last few weeks at Loughborough getting a serious beasting in the gym — it’s been knackering, but I feel stronger and have put on about a kilogram of muscle. This isn’t a short-term thing, this is so I am still going strong by the end of the Ashes in January and through to the World Cup,” The Sun quoted Broad, as saying.

“By being dropped for that reason, I at least have the confidence that I”m in the long-term plans,” he added.

The 23-year-old said that he was unhappy with the selectors’ decision to drop him for the Bangladesh Test series.

“It was a hard phone call to take when the selectors told me. They gave their reasons and were adamant it wasn”t form. So if I”m taking wickets during an Ashes win in Australia and the World Cup, it will have been worth it,” Broad said.

He further insisted that the current England one-day side is different from the one that lost 6-1 to Australia last summer.

“These five games against Australia this summer are important — it”s crucial we continue the momentum we”ve built up in one-day cricket. Now we back ourselves and each other to play fearless cricket. We look a different team and that”s why we won the World Twenty20,” Broad said.

“We want to keep beating Australia. We have the Ashes and won that Twenty20 final — it”s hugely important we keep getting these little things over them,” he added. (ANI)

Case against Andhra minister for ”assaulting” realtor

Hyderabad, Jun 6 (PTI) An Andhra Pradesh minister has been booked for allegedly assaulting a realtor following a dispute over laying a drainage pipeline, police said today. On a complaint by real-estate businessman S Ram Reddy, Banjara Hills police last night registered a case against Health Minister Danam Nagender, a local Congress corporator and her husband under sections 448 (trespass) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC, they said.

According to police, Reddy was constructing a building on Road No 12, where a drainage pipeline was being laid. However, Banjara Hills corporator B Bharati and her husband Baba Naik arrived at the construction site yesterday and reportedly told the workers to stop the work saying it was illegal.

Reddy further complained that following a phone call from the corporator and her husband, the minister arrived at the site along with his supporters and indulged in an heated argument asking him to stop the work and allegedly assaulted him, a senior police officer said. Meanwhile, following a counter complaint lodged by the corporator, the police have also registered a case against the realtor under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC. Further investigations were on in both the cases, the police officer added.

‘Romantic’ Cameron Diaz says she’s not afraid of commitment

New York, May 18 (ANI): Cameron Diaz has admitted that she’s a ”romantic” who isn”t afraid of eloping.

“I am a romantic. I love romance. I”m not afraid of commitment. I commit to everything I”m doing and I am hopelessly loyal,” the actress tells Parade.com.

Though the stunner, 37, who’s reportedly dating Alex Rodriguez, is yet to tie the knot, she has already considered how she is going to walk down the aisle, reports The New York Daily News.

“The mystique and the romance of a big wedding are lost on me. I don”t think that I could ever do something that extravagant,” she admits. “I am not much of a planner. I would probably make the phone call 20 minutes before the bus leaves for the chapel and ask if anyone is available to come. That”s probably how my wedding is going to end up.” (ANI)

Detained Pak youth’s father alleges his son’s arrest in Chile a ‘racial profiling trap’

Islamabad, May 13 (ANI): Father of Saif-ur-Rehman, the Pakistani man who was arrested in Chile on charges of entering the US Embassy with traces of explosives on his clothes, has alleged that his son is being implicated in a trap, and has been made a victim of racial profiling.

Mehmood Ahmad Rehman Khan said his son, who is doing an internship in a hotel in Chile, had received a phone call asking him to appear for an identification check at the US Embassy in Santiago.

He claimed that Saif, 28, had a visa, which was valid for five years.

“Saif, while chatting on the Skype with his family on May 7 (Friday), told me that a person named Bill had called him from the US embassy in Santiago and asked him to come to the US embassy for some identification check-up,” The Dawn quoted Khan, as saying.

“My son became a victim of racial profiling and has been detained without a valid reason or evidence. His arrest was clearly a setup,” he added. (ANI)

Wood blocked from airing nuke dump views

Independent MLA Gerry Wood says he has been silenced by the Senate Committee examining a proposed nuclear waste facility in the Northern Territory.

Mr Wood says he was told he cannot speak at today’s hearing in Darwin because he failed to supply a written submission.

He says he made oral submissions at both the Canberra and Alice Springs hearings and was not previously required to register in writing.

“It just appears to me as though this inquiry has decided to invite a select number of people and silence anyone else that really wants to speak,” he said.

He believes he’s been barred from participating in Darwin because he disagreed with Senator Crossin at previous hearings.

“I would have thought that for the benefit of giving more than one side of the story it would have been good to hear another point of view,” he said.

Senator Trish Crossin says all speakers are required to make their intentions known to the Committee.

“We have no submission from Gerry Wood,” she said.

“Certainly not had a phone call from him and so it is not possible for a Senate Committee to plan and conduct its work if we don’t hear from potential witnesses.”

Traditional owners of the site proposed for a nuclear waste dump near Tennant Creek are today expected to tell the Senate Inquiry that their opposition was ignored when the site was nominated.

Elders from each of the five families from Muckaty Station will attend the inquiry, which will examine the suitability of the site, which was nominated by the Northern Land Council.

A spokeswoman for the group, Dianne Stokes, says she will reaffirm her people’s claim to the land.

“I’m coming here to reply to all the information … talk back to these people to what they said at the Senate Inquiry meeting up in Canberra,” she said.

“I want to tell them what I heard, it’s not true.”

Five teens charged over stolen goods

Five teenagers have been arrested over car break-ins at Burton in Adelaide’s north.

Police say they were called by a neighbour who saw several people trying to break into a car in Castle Drive at about 12:30am.

They got a further phone call about trouble at Paralowie just after 1:00am.

A cordon was set up and five teenagers were eventually found in a park.

Police allege they also found a car with stolen property inside.

The five accused will appear in court later.

Looters reign as Kyrgyz opposition takes control

The provisional government in the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan is firming up its control after a violent uprising.

There are reports of sporadic gunfire in the capital, Bishkek, as depleted security forces struggle to fight off looters.

Following thefts from shops and offices the interior minister of the self-declared interim government has issued an order for looters to be shot on sight.

The uprising has left 75 people dead and more than 1,000 injured.

The provisional government says it is in control of the country’s army, but many police officers have not yet returned to work after yesterday’s clashes.

The country’s new interim leader, Roza Otunbayeva, says she received strong support in a phone call with Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin.

But Kyrgyzstan’s president, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, is so far refusing to resign.

He has declined to reveal his location, but is believed to have fled to his powerbase in the south of the country.

He has described the opposition takeover under Ms Otunbayeva, the former foreign minister, as illegal.

“When a handful of armed people take the White House by force with no regard for anything whatsoever and fire in a targeted manner at the president and his cabinet and take over the control of the country in that way, these are not the legitimate authorities,” he said.

But Mr Bakiyev has accepted he has lost control of the security forces.

Surrey takes a gamble on Symonds

Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams believes signing controversial Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds for the English county’s Twenty20 campaign is a risk worth taking.

Symonds, who boasts a Twenty20 strike rate of 156.79 and batting average of 37.43, joined the club on Wednesday and is set to make his debut against Gloucestershire at The Oval on June 8.

Adams said a phone call about two months ago convinced him Symonds could be the key to bolstering Surrey’s side in the shortest form of the game.

“I guess I’m attracted to the broken souls. If we can provide an environment for him and a place for him to come back and almost repair and reinvent himself then again it’s a win-win,” Adams told BBC radio.

“We’ll get the best out of him and he’ll get the best out of us.”

Disciplinary issues cost Symonds his place on a tour of England last year and ultimately his Australian contract.

But Adams has been impressed by the 34-year-old’s form with defending Indian Premier League champions Deccan Chargers.

“He enjoys certain aspects of a decent lifestyle but it comes down to performance on the field. That’s the thing I’m most interested in,” Adams said.

“If he joins us and continues to perform like he has in India recently then we’ll be delighted.”

RPT-China’s Hu tells Obama he wants healthy ties

BEIJING, April 2 (Reuters) – Chinese President Hu Jintao told U.S. President Barack Obama he wants healthy ties between the two nations, while stressing Beijing’s sensitivity about Taiwan and Tibet, Chinese television reported on Friday.

Hu made the remarks in a phone call to Obama, telling him that their two governments should focus on developing “healthy” ties and that he wanted to address trade issues via talks, the report said.

But Hu also told Obama that heeding China’s concerns about Tibet and the self-ruled island of Taiwan was also “vitally important” to good relations, it said. (Reporting by Yu Le, Zhou Xin, Wang Lan and Emma Graham-Harrison; Writing by Chris Buckley; Editing by Ben Lim)

Mysterious foreign phone calls behind Sharif brothers’ political moves: Elahi

Lahore, Mar. 29 (ANI): Senior PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has claimed that Nawaz and Sahbaz Sharif have been playing politics through telephone, as most of their big political moves have been triggered by “mysterious foreign phone calls.”

The Daily Times quoted Elahi as saying that the telephone has remained a key item in Sharif brothers’ policies as they change their decisions after receiving phone calls.

He further claimed that the Sharifs belonged to the “telephone tribe,” and had started the Long March following some late night phone calls.

The former chief minister attributed phone calls for Sharif’s election as the prime minister.

Elahi challenged the Sharif brothers to make some magical phone call to solve problems of poverty, unemployment and price-rise in Pakistan. (ANI)

Doctor prayed to God to heal Beckham”s Achilles tendon

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): The surgeon who operated on David Beckham”s Achilles tendon has revealed that he prayed to God to help him heal the former England skipper’s wounds.

Dr Sakari Orava said he begged for the Lord”s help in healing Becks” Achilles tendon, which he ripped playing for AC Milan.

“It wasn”t so easy to get back to sleep. But I”m a devout Christian, so my wife and I prayed. We said it is not up to us, it”s in bigger hands to see if things go fine,” The Sun quoted Orava, as saying.

Milan bosses made a frantic phone call to the world renowned Achilles expert on Monday.

Becks, 34, tore his tendon last Sunday.

He was operated at the orthopaedic surgeon”s clinic in the Finnish city of Turku the next day.

Beckham has been ruled out playing in the World Cup.

“There is mental stress and pressure, but you can”t show it. The job needs to be done. My hands were not trembling,” he said. (ANI)

Bingle’s agent says AFL boss is a dinosaur on women’s issues

Melbourne, Mar 13 (ANI): Aussie cricketer Michael Clarke’s ex-fiancee Lara Bingle’s agent, Max Markson, has hit out at Australian Football League boss Andrew Demetriou by labelling him a dinosaur on women’s issues.

“Demetriou has been quick to paint Lara as the aggressor against one of his players in Brendan Fevola, when clearly she is the victim here,” Markson said.

“He may run a football code, but he (Demetriou) simply has no idea what the AFL’s left hand is doing from the right. He is a dinosaur when it comes to women’s matters.

“He came out today in Perth saying that Lara doesn’t want to get her side of the story across. But that is blatantly false. She is available to give her side of the story to the AFL on Monday if they so wish,” The Australian quoted Markson, as saying.

“As far as I’m aware the total sum of the AFL’s investigation into this affair to date has been placing one phone call to Fevola. Demetriou and the male-dominated AFL has been slow off the mark in this matter. I haven’t heard an apology coming from Fevola,” he added.

Speaking in Perth on Friday, Demetriou said the AFL had interviewed Fevola, who is alleged to have circulated a nude photo of Bingle, but the league’s numerous requests to talk to her had so far been unsuccessful.

The AFL boss claimed the legal team acting on behalf of Bingle had been unco-operative.

“We’ve made several requests to interview Bingle but they haven’t agreed to those requests. That’s their prerogative. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t want to. They are pretty quick to get into the media and say all sorts of things and even tee off at the AFL, but I would suggest that if they are serious then they make available Bingle,” Demetriou said. Family of Indian toddler killed in Australia mourn their loss

Faridkot, Mar 5 (ANI): A pall of gloom enveloped the household of the three-year-old toddler Gurshan Singh Channa whose body was found in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday.

Back home in India, the family members mourned the loss as they remembered the toddler. The family was informed through a phone call.

“Two months ago they went to Australia and somebody called to say that my grandson has been killed,” said Gurmeet Kaur, grandmother of Gurshan Singh Channa.

The toddler”s body was found by a council worker in grassland by the side of a road near the Melbourne Airport after the child was reported missing from his home around 1.00 p.m. (0200GMT) on Thursday.

According to Australian media, it was believed that the boy was following his father to a nearby library. He walked out the front door of the house and then disappeared.

Police started a search for the boy which was called off around 6.00 p.m. (0700GMT) when his body was found.

The toddler”s family, holidaying in Melbourne, is extremely distraught.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said that he was confident that the police would get to the bottom of the matter.

Australian media reported that the family was finding life difficult in Australia and had planned to go back to India next week.

Gurshan”s death comes on the heels of Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith”s India visit aimed at improving ties between the two nations strained because of a series of alleged race attacks against Indian students studying down under. (ANI)

Musharraf’s trial seekers should act rather than rant: PML-Q

Karachi, Sep.12 (ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League -Quaid (PML-Q) has said that all those people who want former President General Pervez Musharraf to be tried for high treason should come forward and take steps regarding the trial instead of just issuing statements.

“People who want to put former President Pervez Musharraf on trial must come forward and do so because the time had come for taking practical steps rather than just debating on the thorny issue,”The Dawn quoted PML-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain, as saying.

“Every one will be silent on one phone call from Saudi Arabia,” Hussain added.

He came down on the current Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led government saying the country was being “run by plunderers and looters of sugar, cement and flour.”

Hussain stressed that PML-Q is the real opposition party as it was founded by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. (ANI)

Jailed Tweed cries he is ‘innocent’

London, September 7 (ANI): Jailed rape suspect Jack Tweed has reportedly claimed his innocence, while he awaits trial.

Jade Goody’s widower has been put behind bars after a 19-year-old clubber claimed that Tweed raped her as his pal joined in.

The 22-year-old is said to have attacked the girl at a party at his home after inviting the teenager and two of her female friends back to his rented house from a London nightspot in the early hours.

Tweed, who has apparently confessed he had been with the girl at the centre of the claim, purportedly made a tearful phone call to his pal from Pentonville prison in London, insisting he is innocent.

“His friend asked him if he was OK. Jack said, ‘No, I’m f***ing not. I’m in Pentonville jail and I can’t believe that I am here. It’s all a nightmare,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

Tweed apparently added to the friend: “I can’t believe a girl has made an allegation like that against me and I have ended up here. I am totally innocent and that will be shown in time.”

He also reportedly said: “This is all so ridiculous…I have done nothing. I was with the girl, but no way did I rape her. When the police came to the house I could not believe it. I feel drained and really low. I haven’t slept since I was arrested.”

Tweed would be remanded in custody until September 21. (ANI)
