Dropped Hughes sought Tendulkar’s wise counsel over lunch

Sydney, Sep.13 (ANI): Out of favour Australian opening batsman Phillip Hughes had lunch and a long one-hour chat with Sachin Tendulkar when he was in India. He also spent some time in Nagpur with his coach Neil D’ Costa, who is contracted to the Vidarbha Cricket Association academy.

“The first thing Phillip said when he arrived was ‘I can’t change the past, but I can prepare for the future’,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted D’Costa, as saying from Nagpur.

“He got dropped and it was upsetting, but Phillip knows that in the Australian cricket team there are no apprenticeships. At that moment in time the selectors thought it was best he was not in the team and so be it. Phillip has already moved on from that,” he added.

“He was extremely mature about his work over here,” D’Costa said.

Hughes’s next assignment will be the shortest form of the game, the Champions League in South Africa. (ANI)

1988 pic shows US Fritzl, wife as loving couple

London, Sep 1 (ANI): A picture of American Fritzl, Phillip Garrido, and his wife Nancy, taken in 1988, has portrayed them to be a loving couple.

The picture of Garrido, then 37, and Nancy, 34, shows them hugging one another as they posed for the camera, soon after he had been released from jail on parole for kidnap and rape.

Both had met at Leavenworth prison, Kansas, where he was serving his sentence and she was visiting a relative, and they got married in the jail.

After Garrido got out they had the picture taken to send to his father Manuel, who refused to attend the ceremony.

It was signed on the back: “All our love, Phillip and Nancy Garrido”.

“You can see that he is a very handsome man and you can imagine him dominating Jaycee,” the Sun quoted Manuel as saying.

“Nancy was extremely attractive and would have and did do anything for Phil.

“They look like the typical All-American couple – but when you know Phil like I do you know there is something terrible under the surface,” he added. (ANI)

US Fritzl’s secret garden of evil where he kept kidnapped girl as sex slave

London, Aug 30 (ANI): A filthy, ramshackle secret garden, hidden inside ‘American Fritzl’ Phillip Garrido’s house in the small town of Antioch, east of San Francisco, has been revealed to be the place where he kept Jaycee Lee Dugard as sex slave for 18 years and fathered two children with her.

Jaycee – kidnapped from a bus stop by Garrido, 58, when she was just 11 -was just 14 when she had the first of his two daughters, now 11 and 15, reports News of the World.

The kidnapped victim had to raise her undercover family amid the makeshift home of sheds and tents, surrounded by rubbish – topped off with a sign bidding Welcome.

The shocking details emerged as Phillip and his wife Nancy were held for trial after denying 29 charges of abduction, imprisonment and rape – and 29-year-old Jaycee was reunited with her shocked family.

Jaycee and her daughters lived destitute in a maze of interlinked shacks and tents hidden from view by overgrown trees, 8ft fencing and tarpaulins.

The entire area is strewn with their sad array of worn and broken toys and possessions, vying for space with piles of the Garridos’ dumped household junk including discarded cans of chemicals.

A source who visited the Walnut Tree Avenue compound said: “Most frightening are the bloodstains which are everywhere on carpets, tent walls and in clothing.

“It’s extremely disturbing trying to fathom out what went on in that dreadful place and how human beings could do such things.”

“How the children didn’t die of diseases or suffer long-term medical problems is a miracle. Their home was a tip with no hygiene at all,” the source added. (ANI)

US Fritzl describes his crime as “the most powerful heart-warming story”

London, Aug 29 (ANI): Phillip Garrido, the “American Fritzl”, who held a girl captive for 18 years and fathered two children with her, claimed the kidnap and rape ordeal of Jaycee Lee Dugard would be revealed as “a powerful, heart-warming story”.

The convicted rapist, who snatched Jaycee at age of 11, added: “You’re going to be really impressed – it’s going to make world news.”

The 58-year-old was speaking to a Californian TV station instead of a lawyer using the one phone call to which he was legally entitled, reports The Daily Express.

Phillip was arrested after police discovered he had held kidnap victim Jaycee in a compound at the back of his Californian home since 1991.

It is believed she had two daughters with Garrido and that the girls, aged 11 and 15, have never been to school or visited a doctor.

Despite the appalling nature of the crimes, Garrido, who has been charged with kidnapping, rape, conspiracy and committing lewd acts with a minor, did admit what he had done was “disgusting”.

However, he claimed the world will be “impressed” when it hears his side of the story.

He said: “Wait until you hear the story of what took place in this house. You’re going to be absolutely impressed. It’s a disgusting thing that took place with me at the beginning but I turned my life completely around.

“Having those two children – those two girls. They slept in my arms every single night and I never touched them.”

He went on: “You are going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, the victim – you wait.

“If you take this a step at a time, you’re going to fall over backwards and in the end, you’re going to find the most powerful heart-warming story.”

The arrest of Phillip has brought to mind the case of Josef Fritzl who was arrested in 2008 on similar charges. Both men were accused of keeping young girls prisoner and fathering children by them against their will. (ANI)

US Fritzl’s bro compares him to mass murderer Charles Manson

London, Aug 29 (ANI): Phillip Garrido, the “American Fritzl”, who held a girl captive for 18 years and fathered two children, has been compared to mass murderer Charles Manson by his own family.

The Sun quoted Garrido’s brother Ron, 65, as saying: “It seems bizarre, but I can believe it. I know my brother, and I can believe he did that. He’s a fruitcake.

“My thoughts are with the poor girl. She was held prisoner. She had two children with this idiot. Now she’s got to start a life.”

Ron revealed that brother Phillip was psychologically damaged by using the hallucinogen LSD in his teenage years.

Comparing his brother’s wife Nancy to a “robot”, Ron added: “She would do anything he asked her to. I told my wife, ‘It’s no different from Manson’.”

Manson manipulated a group called “The Family” to commit murders in California in 1969.

Phillip was arrested after police discovered he had held kidnap victim Jaycee Lee Dugard in a compound at the back of his Californian home since 1991.

Dugard is now said to be feeling “guilty” that she bonded with her captor during her 18 years as his sex slave.

It is believed she had two daughters with Garrido and that the girls, aged 11 and 15, have never been to school or visited a doctor. (ANI)

Hughes homemade batting technique draws praise from Oz experts

Melbourne, Mar 14 (ANI): Former Australian captain Greg Chappell and other cricket experts have dismissed the criticism about new opening sensation Phillip Hughes homemade batting technique.

“I’ve felt for a long time in cricket there has been too much of a focus on technique and a misunderstanding of what technique really is,” Chappell said.

“One of the problems cricket coaching has been caught up with is that technique is something that should be perfect in somebody’s opinion. I’ve never agreed with that and probably even more so in recent times that technique is this mystical, magical position you get into to play a shot,” he said.

“Batting is about scoring runs. Batting is about getting the ball into areas where the fielders aren’t. It’s being able to get bowlers to bowl in your areas and I think Phillip does it well,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Chappell, as saying.

“He will look bad when he gets out, as all batsmen do occasionally, but that doesn’t mean his method is wrong,” he said.

Hughes’ coach Neil D’Costa says there is another thing about his charge that people should not ignore.

“The X-factor in sport is immeasurable. Obviously you can’t measure Phil’s ability to focus on each cricket delivery that’s bowled to him. His greatest strength is his discipline in an innings,” he said.

“He has a sixth sense of how to weigh up the conditions and execute the plan,” D’Costa said.

Fromer Australian coach John Buchanan is impressed, but not yet convinced about Hughes technique.

“Phil Hughes’ performances may or may not have been the performances of a very good player. Time will tell, he added. (ANI)

New kids in Oz team drive Ponting to cricketing nirvana

Durban, Mar.12 (ANI): Ricky Ponting is as happy as he has ever been in his long and successful cricket life, and he credits the new kids on the block for it.

“This is as happy as I’ve been in my whole career as an Australian player,” Fox Sports quoted Ponting as saying after completing a series triumph against the South Africans in Durban.

“It’s certainly a unique phase in my career as a captain. To have a number of debutants, and a number of inexperienced guys in the side, it’s something I haven’t been accustomed to in the majority of my career as a captain. When this transitional phase first started, I always looked at it as being one of the most exciting little phases of my career. It makes it even more exciting when you see guys like Phillip (Hughes) come in and fare well right from the start,” Ponting said.
“We played some amazing Test cricket over the last couple of weeks and a level of cricket that everybody outside of our dressing room thought we weren’t capable of,” Ponting said, adding that winning with this team has a different feel.
“Being the captain of the side when we were so dominant, Test series and Test matches just seemed to roll into one another. We were winning everything that came along or expected to win everything,” Ponting said.

Cricket’s most successful captain rates this victory up there with the 2006-07 Ashes and the World Cups.

“I’m not putting it above any of those, but if you look at our group of players that we were bringing away on this tour, there’ll be a lot of people around the world who didn’t think that this was achievable,” Ponting said.

“So for us to have achieved what we have done over this week would make this win as special as any that I’ve been a part of. That no one thought we could beat the South Africans makes the achievement even more special for me,” he added. (ANI)

Hilditch backs Phillip Hughes as future Aussie opener

Sydney, Jan.8 (ANI): Australian cricket’s chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch has given opener Phillip Hughes a ringing endorsement as Australia looks to replace Matthew Hayden

Hilditch”s comments are a sign the selectors are seriously considering the 20-year-old for higher honours in the not too distant future.

“As far as Phillip Hughes is concerned, he is a very fine player and showing great potential,” the Courier Mail quoted Hilditch, as saying.

“Some players will unfortunately have to play three or four years of first class cricket and put up huge numbers to force their way in the side and others, if the opportunity presents itself will be considered earlier than that,” he added.

“He is quite exciting, he is a young player who obviously has an ability to score big runs in (Sheffield) Shield cricket, he is an exciting player and we are watching him carefully,” he said.

Hilditch”s comments must be highly encouraging as Hughes” youth and relative inexperience even in first class ranks have been highlighted as possible stumbling blocks in his path to a Test berth.

The 20-year-old”s ability to also play as a back-up wicketkeeper could help in squad selections for upcoming tours of South Africa and England this year.

Hughes has posted 1337 runs at 53.48 in 16 first class matches to date and just under 60 in the Sheffield Shield this summer. (ANI)

Haydos’s career in balance as selectors meet

Sydney, Jan.7 (ANI): Australia’s cricket selectors are likely to give opening batsman Mathew Hayden a tap on the shoulder, saying that probably his stint in international cricket is over after over 15 years of yeoman service.

The Daily Telegraph says that Hayden is tipped to be axed from Australia”s one-day and Twenty20 squads today, and this could be the final straw.

Though the struggling batting veteran has given no clear signal about his retirment plans, his former batting partner Michael Slater believes he has had a horror summer of just 149 runs at 16.55 from five Tests, and that it was time to celebrate his glorious 103-Test career.

“The selectors” hands will be shown by what they do with the one-day squad. If he is to be dropped it is the cycle of the game. He”s had a fabulous career and I think there”s a lot to celebrate. If there is a change to be made, let”s make it, if that”s the way they feel. All I”m sensing from him is that he wants to keep playing. I don”t think the selectors and Ricky are ready to let him go,” the paper quoted Slater, as saying.

Bowled for 39, Hayden gave a couple of bat waves to the cheering crowd but there was no grand flourish to suggest he may never be seen again.

Wife Kellie looked near tears as she stood and applauded – perhaps an indication she knew something the rest of the cricket world was waiting to hear.

Mike Hussey last night declared he would be stunned if Hayden retired and claimed he did not sense anything different in the SCG dressing room.

“He (Hayden) hasn”t said anything to us. From what I see from inside the camp he is still very hungry to score runs. I”m not seeing any signs that he wants to call it a day. Today he was pretty calm, he put his gear down and he didn”t say too much,” said Hussey.

Former Australian great Doug Walters claiming the opener should get his wish to play on to a swan song Ashes campaign.

“We do need some experienced players to continue on for a little while, particularly for the Ashes tour, and I would like to see him still be there,” Walters said.

“I”d like to see Matty go out on his own will, not go out on the selectors” axing block.
“Matty knows better than I do when his time will be up. If it is up, I say congratulations. If it”s not, I wish him every success,” Walters added.

However, Walters also endorsed boom 20-year-old NSW batsman Phillip Hughes as Hayden”s potential replacement.

“Phillip Hughes is a young guy, keen and got a big future ahead of him. He would be my first choice,” Walters said.

Pace bowling great Glenn McGrath claimed Australia needed Hayden to play on for his aura in a time of transitional change, while Shane Warne also backed him to bat on.
Former Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy believes national selectors want Hayden for the Ashes. But he also wonders how much gas Hayden had left in the tank.

Slater feels that Hughes, at 20, is in the same position as players such as Hayden, Justin Langer, Damien Marytn, Ricky Ponting and himself, who were all given chances in their early 20s. (ANI)
