Petrol pump operators threaten strike on 23rd April 2012 Petrol Strike

Petrol pump operators today threatened to go on a one-day strike on April 23 demanding a hike in commission they get on fuel sales.

“It has been decided that all petrol pumps of public sector oil marketing companies in the country shall ob

serve one day protest closure in the first instance from midnight of April 22-23 till the midnight of April 23-24,” Federation of All India Petroleum Traders (FAIPT) General Secretary Ajay Bansal said here.

Further, FAIPT, which claims to represent dealers of over 40,000 petrol pumps in the country, will go on an indefinite strike from midnight of April 29-30, if their demands are not met.

He said the oil ministry has not implemented recommendation of its own committee that was constituted to go into the issue of commission paid to dealers.

The committee headed by Joint Secretary (Marketing) in Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had recommended a dealer commission of 0.39 paise per litre on petrol and 0.17 paise a litre on diesel. But the ministry gave only 0.27 paise for petrol and 0.15 paise for diesel.

“Our demand for 5% commission on the invoice value of petroleum products has been turned down by the committee without any proper reason,” he said.

Commodity prices skyrocket as Manipur blockade enters 55th day

Imphal, June 6 (PTI) The indefinite economic blockade of lifeline routes NH 39 (Imphal-Dimapur) and 53 (Imphal-Silchar) in Manipur by agitating Naga groups entered the 55th day today as prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed with hundreds of trucks remaining stranded. The All Naga Students” Association (ANSAM) launched the blockade on April 12 to protest against holding of elections to six autonomous district councils in the Hills which, it alleged, were given not enough power to carry out development works.

The charge was, however, denied by the state government. Due to the blockade, which was intensified after the state refused entry to NSCN (IM) general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah on May 3, regular supply of essential commodities have been stopped, causing the prices to shoot up.

A litre of petrol now costs between Rs 120 and Rs 150, onion Rs 28 and rice Rs 26 per KG. But despite the exorbitant prices, many essential commodities were not simply available, official sources said. Before the blockade, between 300 to 400 trucks carrying the essentials were plying daily on the two national highways, the sources said.

On May 12, the Manipur government had decided to bring hundreds of stranded trucks, loaded with essential items, from Silchar to Imphal via Jiribam, a distance of 212 Kms, by providing security

Indian man claiming insurance fraudulently avoids jail

Melbourne, May 3 (ANI): A magistrate’s court here has delivered a suspended jail sentence to an Indian national who sought to commit insurance fraud by declaring that he had been attacked by thugs. He also claimed that they doused his car with petrol and burned it.

Jaspreet Singh, however, had actually destroyed the car himself to claim the insurance money.

The Herald Sun quoted magistrate Felicity Broughton as describing Singh”s botched insurance scam as a stupid “premeditated enterprise”” that brought great shame to himself, his family and his community.

Defence lawyer Paul McClure said it was a desperate plan for money that “backfired””.

Police prosecutor Sen-Constable Luke Devlin told Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today that Singh intended to sell his car – a 2003 Ford Futura sedan – as he intended to return to India on holiday at the end of January 2010. (ANI)

Son’s shower of coke saves dad on fire

London, April 22 (ANI): A brave Brit schoolboy sprayed a two-litre bottle of coke to save his dad after the 52-year-old accidentally set himself on fire.

Andrew Wythe, of Mullion, Cornwall, was using a petrol can to light a bonfire when a spark ignited the fumes and set his arms, chest, neck and ears alight.

But fifteen-year-old Nicholas came to his dad’s rescue as he grabbed a coke bottle, shook it violently before spraying it on Andrew to douse the raging flames.

Andrew was rushed to hospital in Penzance and transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol after the incident last weekend.

He was treated for burns and will now need skin grafts.

Andrew, an office temp worker, praised his teenaged son for saving his life.

“It was hot day and we had taken a bottle of coke to keep cool. I put the petrol on and straight away it set me on fire. I dropped to the floor and tried to roll round,” the Daily Express quoted him, as saying.

According to doctors, Andrew’s injuries could have been fatal if Nicholas had not acted.

Nicholas said: “Inst-inct took over really.”

Andrew added: “Without Nicholas it would have been a lot worse,” he said. “I was lucky really. We all know it’s dangerous throwing things on the fire. You could be lucky if the wind is blowing in the right direction, or unlucky like myself.” (ANI)

Man admits setting fire to policeman

A 40-year-old Perth man has pleaded guilty to setting a police officer alight at the Warwick station.

Anthony Galea broke into the car park of the Warwick police station in February last year.

Prosecutors allege he planned to blow up two cars owned by officers who worked at the station but he was disturbed by Constable Mark Ferguson.

Constable Ferguson was doused with petrol and set alight as he tried to arrest Galea.

The District Court was told the officer was wearing a fire retardant uniform and he suffered only superficial burns to his leg.

Galea’s lawyer says his client has mental health problems and needs to be assessed by experts before he is sentenced in May.

Galea has been remanded in custody.

Branson shock: Virgin F1 car’s fuel tank too small to finish races

Melbourne, Mar 27(ANI): British billionaire businessman Richard Branson’s Virgin Formula One Team will not be able to finish their races after it was revealed that their car fuel tanks lack capacity to propel them to the finish line.

Fuel tanks have to hold around 210 litres of petrol this year after refuelling was banned, but the tanks on the VR-01 are around 25 litres too small, leaving them 10 laps too short.

Without a bigger fuel tank, the Virgin team cannot finish races if they go at top speed.

According to reports, Virgin will have to shell out a million pounds to design a new tank, but the revamped cars are unlikely to be ready for at least another five races.

Meanwhile, Virgin technical director Nick Wirth said the team has got permission from the FIA to change the tanks on safety grounds.

“It has become clear during pre-season testing and our debut race in Bahrain that our fuel tank capacity is marginal. If not addressed, there is the possibility fuel pick-up could become an issue in certain circumstances,” The Sun quoted Wirth, as saying.

“At the time the design of the tank was locked down in June 2009, its capacity was determined by a number of factors, some of which have since changed. That tank capacity now needs to be increased accordingly,” he added.

The Bicester-based Virgin team is one of the three new teams featuring on the grid this year. (ANI)

Fire breaks out in illegal petroleum products godown in West Bengal

Siliguri (West Bengal), Sep 3(ANI): A blazing fire broke out in an unauthorised godown in Siliguri on Thursday, where thousands of illegal petroleum products were stored for long.

The fire broke out in the Niranjan Nagar area of Siliguri at around 8.30 in the morning, and within minutes spread to the two adjacent houses in the vicinity.

Seven fire engines were immediately pressed into service and it took more than three and a half hours to contain the flames.

“We can’t say how the fire broke out, but it did break out in an unauthorized godown where diesel, petrol and kerosene were illegally stored in a barrel. The whole godown was engulfed in flames. We called for the fire brigades and it took seven of them to control the fire. Had they not been arrived on time then the whole village would have been engulfed in flames,” said Tapan Ghosh, the divisional officer of fire brigade.

The villagers on the other hand say that they were completely unaware of this illegal business in their locality until the accident occurred.

“We had no idea about this illegal business of petroleum products in our area. We used to see that oils were being transported or carried and thought that some minor stocks were stored. But it came as a big surprise to us to see such a huge illegal storage of petroleum products. Now we are sure that there are more such unauthorized go downs in our areas,” said Charan Ghosh, a local.

The villagers alleged there were many godowns in the area, which were illegally storing petroleum products. (ANI)

China denies any violation of Indian air space

Beijing, Sep.1 (ANI): Chinese government on Tuesday said that there has been no violation of Indian air space and reports about such an occurrence by India media were baseless.

Jiang termed the reports as “groundless” and said that the two countries have arrived at a consensus about making efforts to safeguard peace and tranquility on the border region while the border issue is being negotiated.

It has happened. That is confirmed. But there is nothing alarming in it. I have given a written reply and that is the correct version, said Army Spokesperson Northern Command, Colonel Kachari,

Two Chinese helicopters reportedly violated the Indian air space in the recent months in Leh. The helicopters air-dropped some canned food in a barren land at Chumar, northeast of Leh, along the border on June 21.

Cycle rally promotes healthy lifestyle in Patna

Patna, Aug 9 (ANI): Hundreds of enthusiastic residents in Patna participated in a cycle rally on Sunday to promote a healthy lifestyle among the masses and spread awareness about rising pollution levels.

Despite the drizzle, the cyclists rode through the roads of the city to relay their message that ‘they care’ about the environment and expect others to understand the need to preserve it.

The organisers believe that cycling can help curb pollution and is a good way of exercise for all those leading a sedentary lifestyle.

“We want to send the message that cycling can help us achieve a pollution free environment, we also want to say that there is a need to save energy, to lessen the traffic on roads, and tackling various other problems for the construction of a healthy society. We expect that the message reaches out to the people,” said Vivek Kumar, organiser of the rally.

The participants contended that cycling is a good alternate for driving and also a way to tackle the rising cost of POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants).

“Pollution is on the rise because of excessive reliance on these. The petrol and diesel resources may exhaust, we want to say that we should try to cope with these limitations and try, at our own level, to stop pollution,” said Balendra Kumar, a participant.

Hike in vegetable prices leaves Bihar residents in harried state

Patna, July 12 (ANI): The high prices of vegetables have upset household budgets of people in Bihar, leaving them both harried and troubled.

The hike in fuel prices and a delay in monsoons have adversely affected vegetable prices. People say the prices are too high.

“For the past month or so, vegetables have become very expensive. Whatever was around rupees eight has gone up to 25 rupees. Ladyfinger which was rupees six per kg has gone up to rupees 25-30. We now buy lesser quantities,” said Sunil Kumar Agarwal, a customer.

People say think before buying vegetables or buy just as per their needs.

“The vegetables have become very expensive. We have to think before buying. Previously, we could buy in stock and keep it in the refrigerator. But now, we just buy as per our needs,” said Archana Kumari, another customer.

Vendors say the rise in fuel prices have had a cascading effect on vegetable prices and the prices of other essential commodities.

“The rains were delayed this year so the crop was destroyed. And all the vegetables that we get from outside, they are expensive as the petrol and diesel prices have increased. We spend more, so we sell it for more,” said Guddu, a vegetable vendor.

CPI, SUCI activists protest against fuel price hike

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Activists of Communist party of India and Socialist Unity Centre of India staged demonstrations against the increase in prices of petrol and diesel here on Friday.

Shouting slogans against the ruling Congress party, protesters demanded the government to roll back the hike.

“The prices of essential commodities like vegetable, pulses, sugar, rice will increase due to hike in petrol and diesel prices as transportation will become expensive. This is a slap on the face of public who voted for Congress. We strongly condemn the fuel prices hike and ask the government to roll back the hike,” said Amarjeet Kaur, CPI’s state secretary.

The hike will aid margins for state-owned refiners forced to sell at government-set prices, and may be only a prelude to greater free-market price reforms in next week’s budget.

Activists of SUCI said that the fuel prices hike will increase the inflation rate.

“It is ironical that fuel prices have been hiked at a time when the government is announcing100 day agendas for the country. On one side the government is all set to come-up with packages to help capitalists overcome economic crisis and on the other hand it is increasing the inflation rate for the commoners,” said Pratap Samal, SUCI’s state secretary.

Fuel prices were last raised in June 2008, but they were cut in December and again in January as oil prices tumbled.

The crude oil prices have more than doubled since a February low, with second-quarter gains the highest since 1990.

Despite price increase, oil firms were likely to suffer a revenue loss of 560 billion rupees on sale of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene this fiscal. (ANI)

Farmers oppose fuel price hike

Rohtak (Haryana)/Mumbai, July 2 (ANI): Farmers have reacted strongly to the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel.

The delayed monsoon is forcing them to irrigate their fields through tubewells, which consume around 15-20 litres of diesel. They said the price hike would make the running of tubewells very difficult.

“This is the time to sow paddy in the fields. The monsoon has not arrived as yet. We have to use tubewell water to irrigate the fields. The tubewell consumes around 15 to 20 litres of diesel. But now, after the hike in prices of fuel, how will we arrange for so much money to run the tubewell? It will be very difficult for us. We will face heavy losses,” said Rajendra, a farmer.

The farmers said the prices of vegetables and other commodities would also go up, as transportation costs would rise because of the fuel hike.

“With the increase in fuel prices, the prices of vegetable will also go up,” said Bheema Chavan, a vegetable seller in Mumbai.

Petrol and diesel prices rose by as much as 10 percent in India, on Wednesday, the first increase this year and one of the steepest ever.

Fuel price hike unpopular all over India

New Delhi, July 2 (ANI): Petrol and diesel prices rise by as much as 10 percent in India, on Wednesday, the first increase this year and one of the steepest ever.

Petrol prices rose by four rupees a litre, while diesel rates were hiked by two rupees a litre.

The price hike did not go down well with the common people who expressed their helplessness at the situation.

“The sudden increase in the prices is very strange. It will definitely burn holes in the pockets of the common people. This is pre-budget increase god knows what will happen after the budget has been passed.” said Puneet, a customer.

The hike in the fuel prices will burden the people already reeling under the impact of recession. It may trigger talk of further freight hike by the transporters.

“The price of petrol and diesel was hiked by four rupees and two rupees respectively. Let’s see what happens in future. The price hike will cause many problems for the common man, but we can’t say how much further increase there will be in the prices of fuel,” said Ishmeet Singh, another customer.

Prices were last raised in June last year, when the average price of India’s crude imports were 113 dollar a barrel, but they were cut in December and again in January as oil prices tumbled.
