England win warm-up, coach blows hot and cold

England enjoyed a triumphant home send-off to the World Cup when an unfamiliar team packed with reserves outmuscled a skilful Mexico side 3-1 in their last home friendly at Wembley on Monday.

Manager Fabio Capello may have learned little that he didn’t know before a contest in which England recovered from a ragged first half showing to ensure win.

But for the Italian, it was a night to ink over a few pencilled ticks against certain names and etch a line across others as he finalises the decisions that will cut his 30-man squad to 23 for the finals in South Africa. “I wasn’t too concerned. It was very important to know where we are now – physically and mentally – and I think when we play on the counter, we look really dangerous. But we can’t just play on the counterattack.”

Goals from defender Ledley King, with a well-placed header, and striker Peter Crouch, with what appeared to be his right arm, put England 2-0 ahead before striker Guillermo Franco pulled one back from close range three minutes into first half added time. England goalkeeper Robert Green made two outstanding saves and saw another Mexican shot hit a post before the interval as England struggled to survive against spells of good possession and sharp attacks from the visitors. “The manager told us what he thought at halftime – we had to be a lot more aggressive and get in their faces,” said Steven Gerrard.

Argentina thrash Canada

In Buenos Aires, Maxi Rodriguez scored two goals and Argentina defeated Canada 5-0 on Monday in the Gauchos’ final tuneup before their World Cup opener on June 12. Argentina’s farewell match was played with FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi on the bench as coach Diego Maradona decided to rest the Barcelona playmaker.

Midfielder Javier Pastore started up front with Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. Rodriguez scored in the 16th and 32nd minutes and Angel Di Maria added another in the 37th. Tevez scored in the 63rd and Sergio Aguero added his in 71st, seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Shilton backs Rooney to live up to expectations of English fans during WC

London, May 19 (ANI): England legend Peter Shilton has backed ace striker Wayne Rooney to live up to the expectations of fans during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa

“At the end of the day Wayne is only 24, but I’m sure he can deal with everything. He’s really matured as a player and shaken off the impetuousness of his younger years,” The Sun quoted Shilton, as saying.

“The aggression and will to win remain, along with the competitive spirit, but he’s harnessed it in the right way now. Wayne’s far more disciplined and that’s obviously going to be important in South Africa,” he said.

Capello has a number of options with the likes of Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent to partner Rooney in front, the paper said.

But Shilton expects Aston Villa player Heskey to get the nod when England’s Group C campaign kicks off against the United States on June 12, it added.

“It’s a difficult one to call. Heskey’s not an out-and-out goal scorer but his strength makes him a terrific target man. At the end of the day I think it will come down to the system Capello plays,” he said.

“However, I wouldn’t like to see Rooney up front on his own as that would take away from his strengths. I think Heskey will get the nod because Capello likes to play with a strong man leading the line,” Shilton said. (ANI)

Tottenham stars can win World Cup for England

London, May 7 (ANI): Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp believes eight of his stars, if selected, can help make Fabio Capello”s England squad win next month’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The Sun quoted Redknapp, as saying: “I honestly think Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas will be in Capello”s first squad of 30.

“I”d love 2010 to go down as the year Tottenham won the World Cup with the amount of players they could supply for Fabio Capello”s crack at the big one.

“I started with six England players when Tottenham clinched fourth place at Manchester City. I then brought on Bentley and I still had Jenas sitting on the bench, who has already played 21 times for his country. That would be by a long way the most players any single club will provide for Capello”s search for the ultimate international honour,” Redknapp said. (ANI)

Rooney should play up front alone in World Cup: Lineker

London, Apr 24(ANI): Former England footballer Gary Lineker believes that striker Wayne Rooney should play up front alone in this summer’s World Cup.

Rooney has hit 34 goals playing as a lone striker for his club Manchester United this season, and Lineker wants England manager Fabio Capello to use him in a similar role during the tournament in South Africa.

“Wayne’s been brilliant in that role for United. He has played with Emile Heskey and Capello might consider Peter Crouch or Jermain Defoe. But the alternative is to play Wayne like he does for United with Gerrard or Joe Cole,” The Sun quoted Lineker, as saying.

“I fancy using Gerrard with him because that gives him licence to do what he wants and he’s brilliant when on song,” he added.

The 49-year-old further reckons South Africa could prove the stage where Rooney could establish himself as one of greatest players to represent England.

“I was not in the same league as Rooney. He is a much better footballer than I ever was,” Lineker said.

“I was a goalscorer. He is a goalscorer and more. A wonderful talented all-round footballer. I would have loved to have played with him,” he added. (ANI)

Pompey turn despair into FA Cup joy

Crisis club Portsmouth stunned Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-0 extra-time win as it reached its second FA Cup final in three years at Wembley, just a day after being relegated from the Premier League.

Portsmouth, the 2008 FA Cup winners when now Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was its manager, will face double chasers Chelsea – the team Pompey boss Avram Grant managed when they lost the 2008 Champions League final to Manchester United – in the May 15 final at Wembley.

Frederic Piquionne, on-loan from French club Lyon, scored from close range in the ninth minute of extra-time following former Spurs player Kevin-Prince Boateng’s header on from a Mark Wilson free-kick as Tottenham defender Michael Dawson slipped on the much criticised Wembley pitch.

Spurs thought they had equalised two minutes later but former Pompey striker Peter Crouch’s effort was ruled out by referee Alan Wiley for a foul by Niko Kranjcar, another ex-Portsmouth player, on England goalkeeper David James.

Pompey’s win was sealed when Boateng scored from the penalty spot with four minutes of extra-time left after striker Aruna Dindane was brought down by Wilson Palacios.

“It’s superb, we deserved the win,” Porstmouth keeper James told ITV.

“We played very well throughout the team.

“Look what it means to Pompey, it’s fantastic.

“We were eight- or nine-to-one (against) to win beforehand but we have proved people wrong.”

Redknapp could not understand why Crouch’s ‘goal’ was chalked off but praised his former club.

“It wasn’t our day,” he told reporters. “That’s how it goes.

“We had a good goal disallowed but full credit to Portsmouth. They always looked dangerous on the counter-attack and it was always going to be hard when they’ve got their full side out.

“We had good chances, a lot of possession and good opportunities.”

Redknapp though slammed the state of the Wembley playing surface.

“The pitch is a disgrace. I’m not using it as an excuse, it’s the same for both sides. But how can you play on a pitch you can’t stand up on? It’s farcical, unreal.”

Tottenham may be fifth in the table and chasing Champions League football but there was little evidence of a gap in class between the Londoners and their south coast opponents.

Portsmouth, bottom of the Premier League and with acknowledged debts of more than 76 million pounds, kicked-off knowing West Ham’s win over Sunderland on Saturday meant it had been relegated.

Portsmouth looked a threat on the counter-attack and had an excellent chance in the 37th minute only for Piquionne, one-on-one with Heurelho Gomes, to see his shot saved by the Brazilian’s left leg.

James though had to be at full stretch to palm away one-handed a shot from Tom Huddlestone.

Pompey continued to threaten on the break and when the quick Aruna Dindane crossed accurately to the equally speedy Piquionne, his fellow striker should have done better than head straight at Gomes.

Soon afterwards Spurs claimed a penalty after Pompey’s Steve Finnan appeared to handle in the area but Wiley dismissed the appeals.

And with 20 minutes of the second half left, Mokoena cleared off the line from Crouch, who later grazed the far post with a header.

Crouch could have won the match in stoppage time as he tried to turn in Gareth Bale’s shot but James made an excellent block from point-blank range.

How the Great Thar Desert trip changed Abbey Clancy’s life

London, March 30 (ANI): Abbey Clancy, fiance of England football star Peter Crouch, has admitted that her trip to Great Thar Desert in India gave her a much-needed wake-up call about her privileged existence.

For 10 days, Abbey and her mum Karen joined a gipsy family as they crossed the desert by camel to perform a dance at a fair.

And the extraordinary journey – part of a new three-part ITV2 series, The Parent Trip – changed her life.

“My holidays normally consist of lying by the pool in a nice bikini with a strawberry daiquiri,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“All my family holidays have been in Spain and Europe. I’ve never ventured out that far and I certainly haven’t experienced anything like that in my life.

“I was just mortified. I was terrified of every little thing.

“I’ve been wrapped up in cotton wool my whole life, which is probably quite a bad thing. I was just so upset and shocked at things, like seeing starving dogs and cows. It really upset me.

“It was really, really intimidating because they can’t speak a word of English. I was traumatised and was crying.

“But as the days went on we started to get to know people. And I know it sounds like a cliche but we really did become part of their family and I ended up loving every second of it. I didn’t want to come home,” she added. (ANI)

Galaxy in early Universe went through ‘teenage growth spurt’

Washington, March 22 (ANI): Reports indicate that an international team of scientists has found a massive galaxy in the early Universe creating stars like our sun up to 100 times faster than the modern-day Milky Way, which they have described as “a teenager going through a growth spurt”.

Due to the amount of time it takes light to reach Earth, the scientists observed the galaxy as it would have appeared 10 billion years ago – just three billion years after the Big Bang.

They found four discrete star-forming regions within the galaxy known as SMM J2135-0102.

Each region was more than 100 times brighter than star-forming regions in the Milky Way, such as the Orion Nebula.

The researchers suggested that star formation was more rapid and vigorous in the early Universe as galaxies went through periods of huge growth.

The findings provide a unique insight into how stars formed in the early Universe, the scientists added.

According to lead author Dr Mark Swinbank, in the Institute for Computational Cosmology, at Durham University, “This galaxy is like a teenager going through a growth spurt. If you could see it today as an adult, you’d find the galactic equivalent of the football player Peter Crouch.”

“We don’t fully understand why the stars are forming so rapidly but our results suggest that stars formed much more efficiently in the early Universe than they do today,” he said.

“Galaxies in the early Universe appear to have gone through rapid growth and stars like our sun formed much more quickly than they do today,” he added.

The scientists estimate that the observed galaxy is producing stars at a rate equivalent to 250 suns per year. (ANI)

Tall Crouch to conquer the world with his sporting achievements

London, Sep.19 (ANI): At six feet seven inches, Peter Crouch is arguably the most recognisable football star in England, but he is eager to be famous for his sporting achievements rather than his unique physique.

“I want to be remembered as Peter Crouch the World Cup winner, not just as the tall fella who did the robot dance,” The Sun quoted the nine million pound Tottenham star, as saying.

Crouch has played only two of Capello’s 18 games as England boss and while he scored both times, he remains on the fringe of the Italian’s squad.

Capello suspects Crouch is too nice for his own good and prefers his forwards to have a nastier streak.

Crouch, however, is adamant that he is more than tough enough to survive at the very highest level.

He said: “You can be a nice guy off the pitch but I’ve proved in my career I can mix it with opponents and look after myself.”

Crouch, however, concedes he could never ‘do an Adebayor’ and has turned his cheek in the face of fierce provocation.

“I’m just a person who has been lucky enough to be in this fantastic position of playing football in front of a massive worldwide audience. I’ve never lost sight of that fact and maybe that’s why I’ve been well received by the general public,” he said. (ANI)

Abbey Clancy wore invisible braces to correct ‘crooked’ smile

London, Aug 9 (ANI): TV personality and model Abbey Clancy has revealed that she used invisible braces to correct her ‘crooked’ smile, a secret that’s been tipped to boost her earnings by 5 million pounds.

The 23-year-old has revealed how she used the invisible dental brace the Invisalign for just under a year to overcome insecurities about her looks.

Peter Crouch’s fiancee Abbey underwent ‘Invisalign’ treatment at the Tracey Bell clinic in Liverpool.

Patients are fitted with invisible aligners, which can be removed to eat, drink and floss.

Abbey also received tooth whitening and oral hygiene treatment at the clinic.

“My teeth were goofy and crooked and I felt they stuck out,” the Daily Star quoted Clancy as saying.

“In pictures it was always obvious to me. I would never smile to show my teeth in photos.

“I didn’t know about the clear braces available until I went to Tracey Bell.

“When I was younger I was a model and you can’t model with a conventional brace.

“I used to present and film The Fashion Show with the braces in. I have done photoshoots with them in as well. I was shy about smiling and it gave me more confidence,” she added.

Abbey, now based in Portsmouth, returns to the Liverpool clinic for regular check-ups.

“I feel loads more confident and I love the result,” Clancy said.

“If you are thinking about invisible braces, go for it. It’s a small price to pay for confidence and a perfect smile,” she added.

TV executives believe that Abbey will earn millions more thanks to the new smile.

“She seemed to scowl a lot in the past and that held back her career. Now it’s sorted out, a smiley Abbey is much more attractive for TV. This could prove to be a 5-milion-pound smile,” one TV executive said. (ANI)

Wedding bells for Peter Crouch, girlfriend?

London, July 16 (ANI): Soccer ace Peter Crouch is all set to tie the knot with girlfriend Abbey Clancy, it has emerged.

The happy news came after he crouched down on a lanky bended knee to pop the question, reports The Sun.

The 6ft 7in England striker, 28, was left waltzing with joy as the model burst into tears and said: “Yes.”

A source revealed: “Abbey was thrilled. She didn’t have to think about it and said ‘Yes’ immediately. She cried tears of joy and melted into his arms.

“It was such a happy, romantic and magical moment.”

Crouch, who has dated the Scouse beauty for four years, asked her to be his wife as they shared a sun-kissed holiday in Sardinia.

It is believed that the couple want a huge wedding.

But the source said: “They have not set a date yet. Peter simply decided it was the right time to take their relationship a step further.

“He has been thinking about getting engaged for some time. But he wanted to wait for the ideal moment.” (ANI)

Abbey Clancy struggles to keep her ‘monokini’ in place

London, Jul 7 (ANI): English lingerie model Abbey Clancy was spotted struggling to keep the ‘monokini’ she was wearing in place, as she soaked up the sun on a luxury yacht.

Clancy, 23, is on holiday in Ibiza with her Brit footballer boyfriend Peter Crouch, 28, and the two were seen spending the whole day snorkelling before retiring to their luxury hillside villa.

She was not the only one seen wearing the swimsuit, as last month ‘The X Factor’ judge Cheryl Cole was snapped in a 375 pounds lime green designer Melissa Odabash version while holidaying with her hubby Ashley Cole.

But the ‘monokini’ is definitely not for everyone, warns fashion director Amber Morales.

“You need an amazingly toned midriff to carry the look off as well as Cheryl and Abbey do,” the Mirror quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Wayne Rooney, pregnant Coleen enjoy summer’s second holiday in France

London, June 30(ANI): Soccer star Wayne Rooney and pregnant wife Coleen are having a gala time with pals at St Tropez on their second holiday of the summer.

Six-months-pregnant Coleen was seen riding a jetski when she finished sunbathing, while the footballer was pictured testing out a flyfish, a three-man inflatable dingy similar to a banana boat, The Sun reports.

Meanwhile, footballing couple Jamie and Louise Redknapp, who are also in France, enjoyed the sizzling climes of Sardinia.

Also soccer couples Peter Crouch and Abbey Clancy plus Scott Parker and his missus were found chilling in the same resort. (ANI)

WAG Abbey Clancy’s nip slip

London, April 24 (ANI): England football star Peter Crouch’s girlfriend Abbey Clancy suffered wardrobe malfunction after her boob popped out during an award function.

The beauty had just arrived to the FiFi UK Fragrance Awards 2009 when her dress’ gaping neckline travelled a bit too further south, exposing her boob, reports the Sun.

Clancy is an English lingerie and catwalk model who made headlines during the 2006 FIFA World Cup as the girlfriend of Crouch.

She currently co-hosts the new ITV2 series The Fashion Show with model Michelle de Swarte and George Lamb. (ANI)

World’s tallest teenagers to appear in TV documentary

London, Apr 8 (ANI): At 7ft 4 1/2ins, Brenden, from Ellensburg, Washington, is the tallest boy in the world, and will be featured in an ITV1 documentary ‘Superhuman’, along with other adolescents who stand higher in a crowd.

Most of the teenagers in the documentary tower over Peter Crouch, the 6ft 7ins England footballer, and have to have custom-made beds, clothes and houses to accommodate their frames.

Although Brenden was born a normal 7lb 4oz, at 12 months he was the size of a three-year-old.

And by the time he turned eight, he was as big as an adult, reports the Telegraph.

Doctors diagnosed his abnormal height to a problem with his chromosomes, and have now slowed down the rate at which he is getting taller.

Another teenager is 17-year-old Thai Malee Duangdee, who is the tallest girl in the world with a height of 6ft 10ins.

Also appearing in the programme will be Marvadene Anderson, 15, who stands at 6ft 9 1/2ins and has been named the second tallest girl in the world.

Late Terry strike maintains England record

Late Terry strike maintains England recordLondon – Captain John Terry struck an 85th-minute winner as England maintained their 100-per-cent record in World Cup qualifying on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Ukraine.

Peter Crouch put England ahead after 28 minutes, but with 16 minutes remaining Shevchenko stabbed in the equaliser.

Crouch probably would not have played but for injuries to Emile Heskey and Carlton Cole, but when the chance came, he pounced to score his 15th goal in 33 internationals.

Shevchenko also had a point to prove, having been left out by coach Oleksiy Mykhailychenko, and added his 40th goal for his country with 16 minutes to play.

Anxiety was just gripping Wembley when Terry hooked in the winner.

England lead Croatia, who beat Andorra 2-0, by five points, each having played half their qualifying games.

Ukraine, who have a game in hand, are three points further back.

England began cautiously, but steadily came to take control of the game.

Wayne Rooney, as he had been in the 4-0 win over Slovakia on Saturday, was superb, at least for the first hour, influential enough that Mykhailychenko moved Valentyn Slyusar to man-to-man mark him before the end of the first half.

Rooney looped an overhead just over and Steven Gerrard bent a free-kick just wide before the opener came.

John Terry beat Dmytro Chyhrynskyi to Frank Lampard’s left-wing corner and headed down for Crouch to pivot and lash the ball past Andriy Pyatov.

England grew in confidence at that, and Aaron Lennon began to get into the game more on the right flank.

He almost teed up a sensational second goal for Rooney but the Manchester United forward swept his volley a fraction over.

David James made a hash of a swerving Tymoshchuk shot, but that aside, Ukraine threatened little before half-time.

Shevchenko was introduced for Andriy Voronin 10 minutes into the second half, and almost immediately he was followed onto the pitch by his Milan team-mate David Beckham, who flipped a free-kick just over after 63 minutes.

England, though, were far less imaginative as an attacking force in the second half, aiming a series of long balls at Crouch.

Rooney was still heavily involved, but his frustration was evident as he followed through rashly into Oleksandr Aliev, and was fortunate to find in Claus Bo Larsen a lenient referee.

Ukraine hadn’t really threatened, but neither were England entirely comfortable, and the equaliser arrived after 74 minutes.

Chyhrynskyi got a touch on a right-wing free-kick, and as the ball dropped between defenders, Shevchenko smashed it through James.

England manager Fabio Capello reacted by bringing on Shaun Wright-Phillips for Crouch, but it was the earlier substitute, Beckham, who was key to the winner.

He was fouled on the right, and when he slung the free-kick in deep, Gerrard headed back across goal for Terry to knock in. (dpa)

Capello does not rate Crouch highly

London, Apr.1 (ANI): England football coach Fabio Capello does not rate forward Peter Crouch highly, but admits that he will have to play him tonight against Ukraine only because he has run out of alternatives.

Capello said: “We have to play Crouch because he’s now the best we have who can play.

“My first idea was one style and one particular forward, fast and with movement. Crouch has a different style. He is not Darren Bent and not Emile Heskey. He can’t do the same movement as Heskey and can’t press like Heskey,” The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.
So far, Capello has given Crouch, 28, eight appearances, all as sub, and it is clear Bent would have played in tonight’s World Cup qualifier had he been fit.

The England coach then challenged Crouch to take his chance, saying: “I’m sure he will play a good game. He’s in good form. This is a big opportunity for him – and us. Ukraine will play on the counter-attack, so we need players like Crouch. We have to play like a team, not individuals. (ANI)

Crouch reveals inspiration behind his famous robot dance

London, Mar 28 (ANI): Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch has revealed the inspiration behind his famous robot dance.

“I had to get my inspiration for the robot dance from somewhere, so C-3PO deserves the credit,” Crouch said.
According to the Sun, Crouch said that he and his team-mates from England’s Colney training camp, spend much of their time glued to portable DVD players.

“I am a massive Star Wars fan so I usually bring all the movies with me,” he added.

The England star player said that people keep asking him if the dance was coming back.

“If I score in the World Cup final I will bring it out of retirement,” Crouch added. (ANI)
