Mental health funding for Riverina

The Federal Government says Riverina people with a mental illness will have access to more support as a result of ongoing Commonwealth funding.

Lambing Flat Enterprises based at Young and the Schizophrenia Fellowship in Wagga Wagga will each receive $1.4 million funding for the next three years to continue its work in community mental health services.

The Federal Community Services Minister Jenny Macklin says the money is for the Personal Helpers and Mentors Program which allows people to access intensive help.

“It’s support for a whole range of different types of services,” she said.

“Some of it might be really making sure that people with mental illness are less socially isolated, helping them learn new skills, connecting them with family and friends, providing support to find suitable housing.

“People can be helped to get to their psychiatric appointments for example, make sure that they go and get more specialised health services that they need in addition to this community support.”

Emails carry more lies than hand-written letters

London, Apr 1 (ANI): People are more likely to tell lies in an email than when they use a hand-written letter as a means of communication, a new study has found.

The team from Rutgers Business School in New Jersey believes it is so because email puts a greater “psychological distance” between liar and victim, reports The Daily Express.

The researchers said: “Email is generally viewed as less permanent and less personal than other forms of communication.

“This may explain why individuals typing on a computer may be more likely to feel released from strict moral guidelines than those using pen and paper.”

To reach the conclusion, scientists selected 48 students and told them they had been allocated money to share with a partner who was someone they did not know and would not meet. Each was told the sum was 89 US dollars.

However, the volunteers were also told that their partners only knew the sum was between five and 100 dollars and would never find out the real amount.

Then each had to decide how much to share, and inform their partner, either through email or letter.

Around 92 per cent of those who used email lied, compared with 63 per cent of letter writers.

The study has been published in the Journal of Applied Psychology. (ANI)

Retail sales, building approvals slide

There has been a bigger-than-expected fall in Australian retail sales and building approvals during February.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show retail sales fell by 1.4 per cent to $19.8 billion during the month, compared to January.

Most economists had expected sales to rise by about 0.3 per cent.

Building approvals figures show a fall of 3.3 per cent to 13,929 dwellings in February compared to January.

The market consensus had been for a rise of 2.1 per cent.

The retail sales data show that, in trend terms, cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services rose 0.4 per cent and department stores posted gains of 0.2 per cent.

Food retailing fell 0.1 per cent and clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing was down 0.1 per cent.

Australian building approvals were dragged down by another big monthly fall in the apartments and multi-storey dwellings sector, which declined 10.9 per cent.

Approvals for private sector houses fell by 0.9 per cent.

Shia Muslims to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday

Lucknow, Sept 20 (ANI): A senior official of Shia Muslim community has said that Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated on Monday.

Kalbe Sadiq, Shia cleric and senior vice president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said here that the Ramadan moon would be sighted on Sunday.

“I can say without any doubt that in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and in India, the moon will be sighted on Sunday. Sunni, Shia and all other sects of Islam will celebrate the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday,” Sadiq said.

However, Sunni Muslims disagreed, saying they would wait for the sighting of moon before declaring Eid.

“If the moon is sighted on September 20, or if the sighting in reported form anywhere, then Eid will be celebrated on the 21st. And if it is not sighted on the 20th and there are no reports either, in that case it will be celebrated on the 22nd,” said Maulana Khalid Rasheed, head of Lucknow’s Firangi Mahal.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a daylong fast and open it in the evening.

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world observe a joyous three-day celebration called Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month, which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy. (ANI)

Ang Lee ‘working on film version of Life of Pi’

Nevada (US), Sept 9 (ANI): Oscar winner Ang Lee is working with a writer on film adaptation of Yann Martel’s fantasy “Life of Pi” about a boy from Pondicherry, India, who survives 227 days after shipwreck, according to reports.

Lee is quoted as saying: “It’s a very strong story, but it’s hard to crack.”

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, welcoming the film adaptation of this India influenced story, urged Lee to handle the Pi’s spirituality exploration and holistic edge with cultural sensitivity.

Expected to be released in 2011, Canadian Martel’s (Manners of Dying) Man Booker Prize and other awards winning novel is an adventure tale about 16-years old Pi Patel stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, orangutan, an injured zebra, and a hungry Bengal tiger in Pacific Ocean on his voyage from India to Canada.

It has sold well over one million copies and was a global publishing phenomenon. Keith Robinson adapted it into a play and toured England.

Oscar nominated M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen); and Dean Georgaris (What Happens in Vegas) have already dropped this project after preliminary exploration.

The Fox 2000 high profile film adaptation will be produced by Gil Netter (Personal Effects). (ANI)

Non-lethal blast waves can cause brain injuries even without direct head impacts

Washington, August 27 (ANI): In a new research, scientists have discovered that non-lethal blast waves can cause human brain injury even without direct head impacts, which could lead to an enhanced understanding of head injuries and improved military helmet design.

Using numerical hydrodynamic computer simulations, Lawrence Livermore scientists Willy Moss and Michael King, along with University of Rochester colleague Eric Blackman, have discovered that non-lethal blasts can induce enough skull flexure to generate potentially damaging loads in the brain, even without direct head impact.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from mechanical loads in the brain, often without skull fracture, and causes complex, long-lasting symptoms.

TBI in civilians is usually caused by direct head impacts resulting from motor vehicle and sports accidents. TBI also has emerged among military combat personnel exposed to blast waves.

As modern body armor has substantially reduced soldier fatalities from explosive attacks, the lower mortality rates have revealed the high prevalence of TBI.

But, TBIs resulting from blast waves without head impacts have not been well understood.

To tackle this puzzle, the research team used three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to prove that direct action of the blast wave on the head causes skull flexure, producing mechanical loads in brain tissue comparable to those in an injury-inducing impact, even at non-lethal blast pressures as low as 1 bar above atmospheric pressure.

The Army’s Advanced Combat Helmet replaced the older Personal Armor System for Ground Troops helmet.

Its Kevlar shell provides ballistic and impact protection, and its reduced edge cut, although reducing area of coverage, improves soldiers’ field of vision and hearing.

In particular, the team showed that blast waves affect the brain very differently from direct impacts.

The primary source of injury from direct impacts is the force resulting from the bulk acceleration of the head.

In contrast, a blast wave squeezes the skull, creating pressures as large as an injury-inducing impact and pressure gradients in the brain that are much larger.

This occurs even when the bulk head accelerations induced by a blast wave are much smaller than from a direct impact.

“The blast wave sweeps over the skull like a rolling pin going over dough,” said King, LLNL co-principal investigator.

Although the simulations show that the skull is deformed only about 50 microns, “this is large enough to generate potentially damaging loads in the brain,” according to Moss.

“The possibility that blasts may contribute to traumatic brain injury has implications for injury diagnosis and improved armor design,” he added. (ANI)

Lindsay’s neighbours want her to move out

New York, August 26 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan’s neighbours apparently want the actress to move out after being fed up with the paparazzi who take up the parking space.

The singer’s peeved neighbours said “it has been a nightmare” ever since the star, whose house has been twice burglarised, shifted in Hollywood Hills, according to RadarOnline.com.

“The truth is that this is a very quiet neighborhood and there have been no break-ins apart from at Lindsay Lohan’s house,” the New York Daily News quoted a neighbour as saying.

“Since she moved in last November it has been a nightmare with all the paparazzi parking in our driveways waiting for her,” the neighbour added.

The neighbour also said: “I’ve got nothing personal against her but she needs to find a home in a gated community with security at the main gate because all the residents are fed-up with the situation.” (ANI)

Janet Jackson eyes personal tell-all book

Washington, August 25 (ANI): Janet Jackson is reportedly planning to write a personal tell-all book, in order to help herself cope with the grief of her brother Michael’s death.

The songbird will purportedly also detail her own battle with issues like self-esteem and weight, along with the family’s struggle to come to terms with the loss of the King of Pop.

“She is going to talk about Michael’s death and how it’s affected her and his children and the rest of the family… A lot of it will focus on her battle with self-esteem and weight,” Contactmusic quoted a source as having told In Touch Weekly.

“She’s a huge success. But that’s not always what she has seen when she looks in the mirror, so the book will talk about how she has coped, and about her family relationships. She wants to help other young women out there,” the source added. (ANI)

Budget is positive, realistic, say industrialists

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) The union budget for 2009-10 presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday is “positive” and “realistic” and both the business community and the common man would benefit from the budgetary proposals, leading industrialists in the country said.
“I am reasonably happy with the budget,” said Deepak Parekh, chairman of Housing Development Finance Corp (HDFC).

“The finance minister has stressed on rural housing by allocating more money and by strengthening the National Housing Bank and I think we need to divert our attention to rural housing,” Parekh said.

He welcomed Mukherjee’s proposal to increase the allocation for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), saying it would give a boost to the urban housing sector.

According to ICICI Bank chairman K.V. Kamath, it is a “pragmatic budget”.

“The decision to cut out the surcharge on personal income tax is a welcome step. I think it puts a lot of money into the hands of the lay spender which is certainly good for the economy,” said.

He welcomed the budget’s focus on the infrastructure sector.

On the capital market’s reaction to the budget, Kamat said: “I think this is a budget which will take two-three days for the larger market, not just the capital market, to understand and then probably react to.”

Karl Slym, president and managing director of General Motors India, said the budget “is encouraging due to its focus on infrastructure, education, agriculture, irrigation, health care and social security schemes”.

“Since it addresses some of the concerns of the industry in general, it should help fuel demand and economic growth going forward,” he added.

R. Seshasayee, managing director of Ashok Leyland, said the budgetary proposals were “quite positive”.

“Clearly, the intention is to stick both to the larger agenda in terms of the tax reforms and the goods and services tax (GST) for 2010. I think it is a good indication”.

Reliance Money managing director Sudip Bandyopadhyay said the introduction of new direct tax code and GST were positive steps.

“However, going forward, issues with respect to opening of foreign investment in certain key sectors, public sector units disinvestment and control of fiscal deficit need to be addressed,” he said.

ICICI Security Primary Dealership managing director and chief executive B. Prasanna hailed the proposals for increased spending and the budget’s focus on growth.

“But, the bond markets will have to grapple with a higher than expected gross borrowing programme of Rs.450,000 crore. There is an expectation that all the extra borrowing will be front-ended and completed in the remaining three months of the first half.”

“This increased borrowing may exert upward pressure on yields on a week-on-week basis. The budget is silent on capital market reforms and on a road map for bigger divestments,” Prasanna observed.

Brit teens know the cost of an iPod, but not of bread

London, May 28 (ANI): Brit teenagers are more conversant about the cost of an iPod, but are completely ignorant when it comes to the price of a loaf of bread according to a survey.

On average the youngsters estimated the cost of an iPod Nano was 105 pounds, only 5 pounds less than its usual retail sale.

However, in their opinion, the average cost of bread was 4.31 pounds.

While one respondent said that the price of bread was 200 pounds, another said a penny.

Bread usually costs between 80p and 1.50 pounds, reports the Telegraph.he Young Enterprise poll of 1,000 12- to 19-year olds found that the most of the teenagers were uneducated in the general cost of living.

They thought that half a dozen eggs would cost around 2.41 pounds, while a basic box usually costs around 1.50 pounds.

And the average cost of a house, in their opinion was believed to be 1.2 million pounds, but the latest government figures put the current average cost at 187,193 pounds.

The poll found that girls are the least confident, with two thirds saying they are not prepared to manage their finances, compared to half of boys.

Young Enterprise, an education charity, has developed the Personal Economic Programme to help young people understand finances and the economy. (ANI)

‘Career woman Rihanna goes single’

New Delhi, May 28 (ANI): Links created between Rihanna and series of handsome famous men, including rapper Kanye West and Aubrey Graham, have been smashed after the singer was reported to be single.

The Umbrella hitmaker, who parted ways with Chris Brown after he allegedly punched, choked, and bit the star in February, was said to be putting all her efforts in prioritising her career, reports the China Daily.

A source said: “Rihanna needs the focus to be on her talents right now, not the bumps in her personal life. She doesn’t want anything else to overshadow her career.

“Kanye is all over Rihanna’s album – not all over Rihanna. She’s feeling Aubrey but wants to take things slow. Right now they’re just chilling.”

Rihanna has been taking acting lessons while working on her new album in New York.

The source added: “Rihanna will start filming ‘Personal Protection’ later this year. She’s not ready, acting wise, yet, so she’s meeting with a coach.” (ANI)

Meanwhile, Brown has also become a part of an untitled project.

“Chris plays a homeless character. It’s a real rags-to-riches story and should be good for his image,” a friend said.

Brown will shoot for three weeks over the summer in both L.A. and Memphis. (ANI)

Cleaning the oven is the worst household chore for Brit residents

London, May 9 (ANI): It’s not just you who hates scraping burnt food and grease off the inside of the cooker, for two-thirds of British residents also believe that cleaning the oven is the worst household chore, according to a report.

The survey by market analysts Mintel has revealed that almost 66 percent of homeowners in UK have claimed that the arduous job of scrubbing the over is the most loathed task

Second most dreaded job is ironing, with 56 per cent of Britons saying they hate that chore more than any other.

Third in the league of the most detested chore is the tedium of cleaning windows, with 39 per cent of UK residents claiming it to be the worst household chore.

“These non-daily jobs such as cleaning the oven and windows are among the nation’s most loathed chores,” the Daily Express quoted Alexandra Richmond, Mintel’s Senior Analyst, Beauty and Personal Care, as saying.

She added: “With just one in seven of us having a cleaning routine, for many the jobs build up to such a degree that the chores become totally unpleasant and overwhelming. There is no doubt that preventing the backlog or sharing the chore makes these tasks less daunting.” (ANI)

Mia Farrow bulks up to prepare for starvation stunt

Washington, April 24 (ANI): Mia Farrow has bulked up in a bid to prepare for a three-week fast, which has been planned to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan.

The actress will begin her water only strike from the end of April (09), despite doctors fears she could cause irreversible damage to her body.

Farrow has admitted that she’s a ‘little bit’ scared about going on the strike, but has gained weight to help her body cope with 21 days without food.

“I gained nine pounds. That is about as much as I could gain in a month because I know I am going to lose a fourth of my body mass. But that will quickly go. I am just eating fruit and vegetables this week and I am reading certain things and spending time with my kids, trying to be quiet, because among other things it is a very personal and spiritual journey,” Contactmusic quoted Farrow, as telling People.

“I’m taking vitamins this week, but when I wake up on Monday, April 27, it will be strictly water,” she added.

Farrow also admitted that the strike may not last the full three weeks – because of her small frame.

“I am going to try for three weeks. Given my weight, that may not come to pass. I am going to get my blood tested after two weeks and if there is organ damage, I will have to stop. But my goal is three weeks,” she said.

“I won’t be able to go to the doctor at that point, someone is going to have to come to the house and give me a blood test,” she added. (ANI)
