“Our revenue grew once again in the second quarter,” said Rob Zandbergen, CEO of USG
People. “This after 7 quarters of decline in revenue. The recovery gathered strength and
we saw extremely strong growth in a few countries. The early cyclical general activities
are growing faster than the late cyclical specialist and administrative activities.
Since we once again succeeded in keeping our operational expenses virtually the same,
the operational leverage worked well in the second quarter. Higher revenue translated
into a substantially higher result. The EBITA more than doubled compared to the previous
quarter. In the late cyclical Dutch market, the recovery lagged somewhat behind, as
expected. Revenue in the Netherlands improved slightly compared to the previous quarter
and indications from the field were increasingly positive. We are confident that the
recovery in the Netherlands will also be more visible in the results in the third
quarter.

The merging of labels in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany announced earlier is going
according to plan and will be completed in the third quarter. Assuming further
improvement in our markets, we are now excellently positioned to profit optimally from
the market recovery.”

Thai govt lifts emergency in more provinces

July 20 (Reuters) – Thailand’s government said on Tuesday it was lifting a state of emergency in three provinces but it would remain in force in others including Bangkok, after being imposed in April to help authorities cope with political unrest.

The government had lifted the emergency in five provinces on July 6 when the initial period came to an end, but extended it for another three months in other areas covering a quarter of the country because it said anti-government elements still posed a threat.

The state of emergency bans political gatherings of more than five people and gives the government powers to censor the media. It also gives broad powers to the security forces, including the right to detain suspects without charge. (Reporting by Pracha Harirasapitak; Editing by Alan Raybould)

Euro here to stay, ECB independent – ECB’s Draghi

June 11 (Reuters) – There is no possibility of turning back from the euro currency and the independence of the European Central Bank cannot be doubted, ECB governing council member Mario Draghi said on Friday. “People have to understand that the euro is (here) to stay … there is no turning back,” Draghi told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar in Helsinki, reiterating comments he made in a keynote speech in Rome at the end of May.

“The ECB’s independence has never been in question,” he said.

Buba sees German GDP +1.9 pct in 2010, +1.4 pct in 2011

June 11 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic recovery picked up in the spring after a sluggish winter but joblessness is likely to rise, the Bundesbank said on Friday.

In its bi-annual forecasts, the German central bank said it expected exports and inventory cycles to support economic growth in the euro zone’s biggest economy, which it saw expanding by 1.9 percent in 2010 before slowing to 1.4 percent in 2011.

“Since early spring the world economy has increasingly shown positive momentum,” the Bundesbank said. “Initially the main drivers (for Germany) will be exports and momentum from inventory cycles.”

In a staff projection released on Thursday, the European Central Bank raised its forecasts for economic growth in the euro zone for 2010 but lowered them a little for 2011. [ID:nLDE6591UR]

Further job losses in Germany are likely, as industry continues to reduce staff although the number of people employed in the services sector should increase, the Bundesbank said.

The jobless total should rise from 3.3 million this year to 3.4 million in 2011 — equivalent to an unemployment rate of 8.0 percent, from 7.9 percent this year.

Inflation pressures were seen as “restrained”, with harmonised annual inflation rates of 1.2 percent this year and 1.6 percent in 2011. (Reporting by Brian Rohan)
