Critics predict Emmy nods for “Good Wife”, “Glee”

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – General cynicism about the medium seems to be a job qualification for being a television critic. But this year there has been a sea change of sorts. Contacted for The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Emmy survey, they were less critical, heaping praise on a wide swatch of contenders. Here are wish lists in the major categories.

Entertainment | Television | Media

DRAMA SERIES

Maureen Ryan (Chicago Tribune): “‘Lost’ (ABC) hasn’t been perfect, but it has been an incredible ride, and the show should be recognized for that ride. It may not always get it right, but it’s always trying. ‘Sons of Anarchy’ (FX), for some reason, is not on awards radars, and it should be. It is a jaw-droppingly excellent show, and has kept me on the edge of my seat while it fires on all cylinders.”

Neal Justin (The Minneapolis Star-Tribune): “It would be nice to see (HBO’s) ‘Treme’ on the list, but it may be too complex for Emmy — though that won’t stop them from honoring the ever-confusing ‘Lost.’ ‘Mad Men’ (AMC) will also make for strong contention, but will ‘Damages’ (FX) make the cut? Don’t bet on it.”

Tom Gliatto (People magazine): “In what medium would ‘The Good Wife’ (CBS) not be nominated? If televisions were toasters, I guess. The first season was an exemplary piece of both craftsmanship and design. Also, ‘Breaking Bad’ (AMC) is a weekly exercise in excruciating discomfort, and ‘Dexter’s’ (Showtime) 12-week season played as taut and unforgiving as a Jim Thompson novel.”

Matthew Gilbert (The Boston Globe): “‘The Good Wife’ has been surprisingly good for a legal procedural. The cases of the week are strikingly timely and engaging, and the ongoing story lines are expertly managed. ‘Treme’ may be too graceful and tragic and humane for Emmy voters. I hope not.”

John Griffiths (US Weekly): “I’m a sucker for tales about the pendulum of good and evil, and while it’s my belief that the ‘Lost’ writers overestimated the show’s — and their own — genius, they deserve endless good vibes for shooting for the moon in a medium that normally shoots for Irvine.”

COMEDY SERIES

Ryan: “I think the nomination for ‘Glee’ (Fox) is inevitable. And that’s fine, but my hope is all of this attention doesn’t go to the show’s head for Season 2. ‘Glee’ has a hard time being dependably good, and it could stunt-cast itself to death.”

Griffiths: “Every episode, ’30 Rock’ (NBC) leaves me with one indelible scene or line that makes me laugh out loud days later. Kenneth the page shows up as a muppet in HDTV! Jack rushes to his love as ‘Grey’s Anatomy’-like emo music soars — and it turns out to be a weird guy with a boombox. On and on. And as crazy as the characters are, the writers obviously care about them. That’s key.”

Gliatto: “‘Modern Family’ (ABC) is a family sitcom that reinvigorates the formula with incredibly sophisticated writing and a perfectly balanced ensemble. ‘Glee’ has music, energy, camp, a certain amount of heart, Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison’s hair. ‘Parks and Recreation’s’ second season showed a sitcom that had really found its sensibility: gentle, unrestrained, silly. Someone show it some love.”

DRAMA ACTRESS

Glenn Garvin (The Miami Herald): “Once you list Julianna Margulies (‘The Good Wife’) in this category, there’s no use wasting your breath speculating about who gets the rest of the spots. She seems like a dead-solid lock — a great actress playing an enormously sympathetic character in a popular show. They ought to just FedEx her the Emmy now.”

Ryan: “Katey Sagal (‘Sons of Anarchy’) kicked ass this season. She had one of the most difficult story lines for a lead actress I’ve seen — her character was raped and she has to keep the rape secret. If you think she’s just a funny lady from ‘Married … With Children,’ you have not read the memo.”

Justin: “There’s a wild-card slot here I would love to see go to Lauren Graham (NBC’s ‘Parenthood’), but if Emmy never gave her a nod for her work in ‘Gilmore Girls,’ it’s unlikely they’ll do it for ‘Parenthood.’ A more likely candidate is Lisa Edelstein, who got more exposure this season on ‘House’ (Fox).”

COMEDY ACTRESS

Ryan: “Amy Poehler (NBC’s ‘Parks and Recreation’) has completely reinvented her character. They’ve really turned that show around. A year ago I would have said this show is not working at all, but she’s immensely entertaining now.”

Garvin: “How about some support for the female lead of a sitcom everybody loves for its male nerds? Without Kaley Cuoco’s (CBS’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’) sweetly sexy presence, the show wouldn’t be funny, just sad. Special anti-nomination rant: Why do Emmy voters love Mary-Louise Parker’s indolent, amoral character in ‘Weeds’ (Showtime) so much? I’d like to slap one of those lattes down her throat.”

COMEDY ACTOR

Justin: “It’s too bad Ed O’Neill (‘Modern Family’) didn’t throw his hat in the lead actor race; he would have been a shoo-in, if only to see the guy who created Al Bundy give an acceptance speech. This should be a showdown between Alec Baldwin (’30 Rock’) and Jim Parsons (‘The Big Bang Theory’). This could be the year for ‘Big Bang’ and Parsons.”

Gilbert: “Jason Schwartzman (HBO’s ‘Bored to Death’) was able to maximize his guarded deadpan in the first season of ‘Bored.’ He has great comic timing, positioning his punchlines on the downbeat.”

Griffiths: “Thomas Jane (HBO’s ‘Hung’) shouldn’t be overlooked for his hilariously deflated, if wildly endowed, dude. And can Stephen Colbert barge in here, please? This season more than ever he’s proved himself to be a grand master of satire. Anyone who can pull off a debate with their split-screen selves on a regular basis deserves at least one nod.”

DRAMA ACTOR

Gilbert: “I really want to see Ray Romano (TNT’s ‘Men of a Certain Age’) on this list. His performance was one of the best surprises of the season. He was tragic, endearing, self-loathing, comical and filled with suppressed rage. He helped the show expand TV’s definition of masculinity. I’d also like to see Wendell Pierce here — he is the heart and soul of ‘Treme,’ forlorn but surviving.”

Garvin: “The startling evolution of Michael C. Hall’s character in ‘Dexter’ (Showtime) last season — learning the downside of his nascent human emotion, that caring about something means also having something to lose — gives him a serious shot.”

Griffiths: “Bryan Cranston and Michael C. Hall are givens; they continue to make their wildly unsavory characters somehow root-worthy — no small feat. But I’d really like to see some Emmy love for unsung leads like Josh Holloway (‘Lost’). The irritated stomp of a swagger he’s given Sawyer — he really created a bittersweet hero in the Humphrey Bogart/Robert Mitchum vein, a universal Everyman.”

Gliatto: “He won before in the supporting category, but Terry O’Quinn’s Locke became so central to the entire mythos of ‘Lost’ this year that he deserves to be bumped up. (Editor’s note: He was again submitted in supporting.) Timothy Olyphant’s clever, droll performance (on FX’s ‘Justified’) had just enough juice to give it a light sizzle — a model of what an actor should be doing when he lands this playful sort of vehicle.”

Entertainment | People

“We’re ecstatic. Celine is just hoping for a healthy pregnancy. She was hoping for one baby and the news that we are having two is a double blessing,” Angelil, 68, told People.

Dion and Angelil have a nine-year-old son, Rene Charles, who was also conceived through in vitro fertilization.

Dion, a five-time Grammy Award winner, is among the top-selling singers of all time, having sold more than 200 million albums around the world. Her hits include the “Titanic” theme “My Heart Will Go On” and “If You Asked Me To.”

Sarah Palin’s daughter claims she doesn’t take financial help from mum

New York, May 7 (ANI): Sarah Palin might be famous and rich, but her nineteen-year-old daughter, Bristol, has said that she does not rely on her parents for financial help.

In an interview with People magazine, the teen mother that she is on her own and works a full-time job to cover the costs of raising her 16-month-old son Tripp.

“My parents help out, but they”re not at my disposal. I think that”s a huge misconception,” the New York Post quoted Bristol as saying.

Palin, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate, has earned millions in book and TV deals since she entered the US national stage alongside running mate John McCain in the 2008 presidential race.

However, Bristol said that her mother”s fame does not ease the burden of childcare.

“I”m doing it by myself. I would say the majority of any paycheck I receive is going to Tripp. Childcare is very expensive, formula is expensive, diapers are expensive — and you don”t think about that as a kid, at all,” said Bristol.

However, the single mother is finally getting help from Tripp”s father, Levi Johnston.

Reports suggest that the pair is enjoying a civil relationship after Johnston made child support payments on time for two months in a row. (ANI)

Marriage hadn”t changed Tiger”s appetite for sex, says in-the-know journo

New York, May 4 (ANI): Tiger Woods would have long been exposed as a love rat, if only a People magazine reporter would have written about his philandering ways.

Steve Helling, who has now written a book, titled ‘Tiger’ on the ace golfer, said that he had a chance to expose Woods as a cheater long before his scandal broke in November 2009 – but chose not to.

“Over the years, I had heard rumours of Tiger”s partying – drunken nights at the clubs, dirty dancing with other women, phone numbers slipped to pretty blonds – but I didn”t follow up on the tips,” the New York Daily News quoted Helling as saying in the tome.

And Helling concealed all this because he didn”t want to be cut off from the golden golfer.

“Negative coverage of Tiger – or even positive coverage that wasn”t approved and micromanaged – would often result in swift, permanent excommunication from the Tiger Woods camp. It was in everyone”s best interest to sweep the rumours under the rug,” he wrote.

And now that the cat is out of the bag, Helling is spilling the beans too.

“Marriage hadn”t changed Tiger”s appetite for sex, and he was always on the prowl for women,” he said of Woods.

He claimed that Woods was apparently looking around as soon as he and Elin Nordegren said “I do” in 2004.

According to Helling, a television producer source said: “[Tiger] dated a lot of girls even after he was married to Elin. When he was filming some commercials at Universal Studios, he asked out a few girls, and this was after he was married. If they said no, he”d move on.””

Helling insists that he wasn”t the only one who ignored the whispers of Tiger”s infidelities.

He claims that a club owner in Florida who saw Tiger “drinking and dancing with a woman who wasn”t his wife” in 2006 called several weeklies with the story.

“No one returned his calls, and the one person he spoke with told him that they weren”t interested in the story,” said Helling.

And that’s why Tiger stayed in bed with his mistresses – and out of the headlines – during his supposedly squeaky-clean 13 years in the public eye, which got shattered in the past months.

“It took 13 calculated years to meticulously shape his image. It took two weeks to destroy it,” said Helling. (ANI)

Bullock nearly gave away baby news at Oscars

London, April 30 (ANI): Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock almost spilled the beans about having adopted a baby during the Oscar ceremony – the socks of her newly adopted baby kept slipping out of her purse.

Bullock had adopted Louis from New Orleans in January this year. But she wanted to keep Louis a secret until the end of the Oscars ceremony, reports The Daily Star.

“I don”t know how we got away with it. We only told a handful of family and friends. I was being followed by photographers every day during awards season, so anything we did with Louis had to be pre-planned like a CIA mission,” Bullock told People.com.

“Just the doctors” visits were filled with decoys and dark cars. I never thought anyone we shared the info with would tell anyone, and they didn”t,” she added.

The 45-year-old actress finally introduced her son to the world with a photo shoot in People magazine. Bullock admitted that she had almost let the news out during the Oscars.

“In my purse, all I brought was a picture of my mom and dad at their wedding, pictures of the kids and a little lime-green sock of Louis” that kept falling out. No one figured it out when they would pick it up and hand it back to me,” Bullock told People magazine. (ANI)

Jesse James” Nazi photo ‘shocked’ Sandra Bullock

New York, April 29(ANI): Sandra Bullock couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw pics of her love-rat husband Jesse James in Nazi regalia.

The pic, snapped in 2004, shows the TV mechanic wearing a German soldier”s hat, with one hand miming the evil dictator”s moustache and the other giving a “Heil, Hitler” salute.

“This is not the man I married. The photo shocked me and made me sad,” the New York Daily News quoted Bullock as telling People magazine.

She added: “This was stupid, this was ignorant. Racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, homophobia, anything Nazi and a boatload of other things have no place in my life. And the man I married felt the same.”"

The hat, James wears in the snap, was apparently given to him as a gag gift by his Jewish godfather.

Bullock has decided to divorce James following the exposure of his affairs. (ANI)

Adoption could help Sandra Bullock get over her divorce: Experts

New York, Apr 29 (ANI): Sandra Bullock”s adoption of a baby son could be a ”win-win situation” for both of them, as the timing is perfect for her to heal while divorcing Jesse James, say experts.

While the Oscar-winning actress will be a busy single mom, her adopted baby son may actually help her get over more quickly from James” transgressions than she would have on her own.

Bullock announced she was adopting 3 1/2-month-old Louis Bardo Bullock from New Orleans in a People magazine interview, and even revealed her intention to divorce James.

“[The adoption] could be the biggest and most wonderful distraction that there is. It”s a way of self-soothing, which is what we all try to do when we suffer a loss. Some forms of self-soothing are constructive and others are destructive,” the New York Daily News quoted Dr. Robert Epstein as saying.

And for ‘The Blind Side’ star, being able to direct love and attention toward a baby is constructive, he said.

“It”s probably a win-win situation. Sandra has a lot of love to give; a lot of time and a lot of resources,” said Epstein. (ANI)

Sydney, Apr 29 (ANI): Hollywood star Julia Roberts has topped the list of People magazine””s “World””s Most Beautiful People”.

Robert Pattinson, as well as Canadian teen singer Justin Bieber and 2009 American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert made it to the male section of “world””s most beautiful”, while actresses Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba and singer Jessica Simpson were featured in a new “Beautiful Jessicas” section. (ANI)

Jesses James says he has a “huge hole” in his heart

London, April 29(ANI): Sandra Bullock”s love-rat husband Jesse James has opened up for the first time after the actress” reported decision to divorce him following the exposure of his extra-marital affairs.

The TV mechanic is saddened by the turn of events and claims to bear a “huge hole” in his heart.

“My whole life has been full of hard decisions. The decision to let my wife end our marriage, and continue the adoption of Louis on her own, has been the hardest,” the Mirror quoted him as telling People magazine.

He added: “The love I have for Louis cannot be put to words. Not having him around to love and to hold has left a huge hole in my heart.

“Sandy is the love of my life, but considering the pain and devastation I have caused her, it would be selfish to not let her go. Right now it is time for me to beat this addiction that has taken two of the things I love the most in life.

“I have always taken great pride in proving people wrong. That time has come once again to show that I am not what everyone says I am.

“I know in my heart that I can be the best father possible to my four children, and the mate Sandy deserves, and realize that this is an incredible mountain to climb.

“But I believe that the steps I have taken in the last 30 days are the foundation for making this happen. The lifelong commitment I am making is what being a real husband and father is all about.

“I ask that you please do not judge Sandy for the things I have done. She has done no wrong. She played no part in any of this. She has been an amazing wife, mother, and best friend, for the over 6 years we have been together.” (ANI)

However, the Oscar-winning-actress has told People magazine”s website she is now adopting the three and a half-month-old boy, who was born in New Orleans, alone.

“Yes, I have filed for divorce… I”m sad and I am scared,” the Mirror quoted her as telling the mag.

A rep for Bullock confirmed to the mag that the star had filed legal papers seeking to end her marriage. (ANI)

Heidi Montag”s Superficial song video released

Superficial is the title song of her debut album, reports The Daily Telegraph.

A little less than 1000 copies of the album were sold on the first day and it summed up to just over 1000 copies in the opening week.

“This is real footage we”ve collected over the years. I”m a reality star and wanted to bring that into my music video,” Heidi told People magazine.

Her husband Spencer Pratt has shot the video on Power Point. It looks like a home-filmed movie.

“Someone like Lady Gaga has to fake paparazzi for her video and create that whole world but that”s the real life I live. That”s my reality,” Heidi added. (ANI)

Paltrow felt awkward during Iron Man 2 kiss scene: Robert Downey Jr

Sydney, April 26 (ANI): Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr has confessed that his co-star Gwyneth Paltrow felt awkward when they shared an on-screen kiss in new film Iron Man 2.

Downey Jr plays Iron Man for the second time in the sequel to the 2008 flick.

The 45-year-old actor admitted that Paltrow felt uneasy during the lip-lock, reports People magazine.

“She said I didn”t know what I was doing, like, ”It didn”t feel good.” And I said ‘You know what? First of all, we’re all friends, so what would be creepy is if I was coming off all sexy to you while we were shooting – which by the way, I”ve done that in movies and it creeps them out! So why would I creep you out,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Downey Jr as saying. (ANI)

‘I’ll always be Sania Mirza’

Newly wed tennis star Sania Mirza has said she will retain her maiden name and play for another three to four years.

In an interview to ‘People’ magazine along with husband and former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik, Sania said, “no matter what happens I am always going to be Sania Mirza. Maybe later I’ll add his name (sic).”

She said they have chosen Palm Jumeirah in Dubai as their new residence.

“My husband wants to live in Palm Jumeirah and I am not fussy, so that’s where we live,” says Sania.

The couple said their courtship developed over telephone after the first few meetings.

“Suddenly we were constantly texting and then we started talking on the phone for hours. So that’s where things started for us,” says Sania.

Sania said her mother would keep saying that she was wasting so much money on phone calls. “I would tell her that it’s not a waste,” the 23-year-old tennis star said.

On the controversy surrounding their marriage, the two of them said it brought them closer together.

“Hats off to my parents who supported Shoaib like they have stood by me even before he became a part of the family. That got us all much closer,” said Sania.

Shoaib says he also had full faith in Sania’s love. “Sania always knew the truth so I was very confident. We were together and surrounded by people who loved and supported us.”

When asked about their busy schedules, Shoaib said, “We are going to be together for a lifetime so it won’t be very difficult to stay away from each other for a few weeks or months.”

“Anyway, it’s temporary. I’ll probably play for another three to four years,” Sania added.

Sania said Shoaib was more romantic than her. “He is more romantic. When I was getting the mehndi done, he sat with me for four hours because he wanted to.”

On their marriage, she said, “Five years from now when we go on a drive, I want us to be excited at the thought of being together and holding hands.”

Shoaib said Sania was very adjusting, extremely sweet and very punctual. More importantly, she doesn’t get angry, he said.

Sania felt Shoaib was an easy person to live with. “We have spent the last seven days together and we haven’t felt like we are in each other’s face. It’s been very easy to live with him,” she said of her week-old marriage.

The pair is expecting a warm welcome in Pakistan. Shoaib says, “I’ve heard that people of Pakistan are very excited and people are saying that there will be dhols to welcome Sania.”

Both of them are now looking ahead to their honeymoon – she likes the Maldives, he prefers Europe – after which they will settle down in Dubai.

McGee will be paid 5,000 dollars for the gig, plus tips.

“Good publicity, bad publicity, it”s all publicity to me. I mean, I don”t expect Sandra Bullock to show up,” he added. (ANI)
