Lovelorn lady gorillas at London Zoo go wild over new guy

London, August 28 (ANI): Just like posters showing football ace David Beckham stripped to his briefs leave his women fans drooling, lovelorn lady gorillas at London Zoo were also found to have a similar reaction to pictures of a continental hunk.

The keepers of Mjukuu, 10, Effie, 16, and Zaire, 34-who have lacked male attention since the death of their silverback mate Bobby in December-recently gave the girls their first glimpse of 20-stone Yeboah, 12, who is due to arrive from France within weeks.

Judging by their reaction to the pictures, they hope that sparks should fly when the new boy arrives at London Zoo.

According to them, Zaire was the most appreciative, as she carefully wedged her pictures into the bark of tree to show them off to best effect.

Teenager Effie was found to tenderly clutch one of the photos to her bosom, but she later ate it.

Youngster Mjukuu also appeared to be delighted at the prospect of a new boyfriend, for she threw her head back and roared with joy.

“It would be nice to think they’ll recognise him. I wouldn’t be surprised if the penny drops when he arrives,” the Daily Express quoted keeper Tracey Lee as saying.

The newspaper further revealed that German-born Yeboah was being shown pictures of the girls by staff at La Boissiere Du Dore zoo in the Loire, so that he would feel at home when they meet.

Lee said: “We think Yeboah will go for Mjukuu first because she’s very pretty and she’s a big flirt.” (ANI)

Kerry Katona ‘used kids’ maintenance cash to fund cocaine habit’

London, Aug 20 (ANI): Kerry Katona uses maintenance funds sent by ex-husband Brian McFadden for their daughters to fund her cocaine habit, it has emerged.

McFadden pays 2,100 pounds per month for daughters, Molly aged seven, and one year younger Lilly Sue.

The ex-Atomic Kitten stooped to dipping into the child maintenance to fund the drugs she craves because all her other spare cash goes to pay off creditors.

The Mirror quoted a friend as saying: “It’s no secret Kerry has been really hard up recently. She’s had to find the cash to pay off an 82,000-pound tax bill as well as being declared bankrupt.

“All her assets have been frozen. So that regular payment from Brian, which is protected from the bankruptcy order, was a temptation she just couldn’t resist.

“She knew the money was untouchable. It goes towards the kids’ school fees and clothing and feeding them.

“Obviously, she hasn’t been spending every penny of it on drugs but she’s made no secret of the fact she’s been skimming off the top for herself.”

McFadden is unaware of Katona’s antics and pals say he will be furious when he finds out how the kids’ money is being spent.he friend said: “Brian will be absolutely furious when he finds out.

“He might have been in a very famous band once but he’s not exactly rolling in it himself and will be disgusted to hear that he is funding Kerry’s habit.

“He will think she is cheating the kids out of money that is rightfully theirs.”

The revelation comes after frozen food chain Iceland sacked Katona as its face from advertisements.

The 28-year-old lost out on 250,000 pounds a year because of the deal falling apart.

Katona was axed after she was caught on camera snorting cocaine at her Cheshire home. (ANI)

Walking or biking to work boosts fitness

Washington, July 14 (ANI): Walking or biking to work can boost fitness, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, say researchers.

“Active commuting was positively associated with fitness in men and women and inversely associated with body mass index, obesity, triglyceride levels, blood pressure and insulin level in men,” say Dr Penny Gordon-Larsen and colleagues at the School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During the study, the researchers looked at 2,364 adults in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study who worked outside the home.

The participants reported the length of their commute in minutes and miles, including details on the percentage of the trip taken by car, public transportation, walking or bicycling.

The researchers further assessed participants’ height, weight and other health variables, including blood pressure and fitness levels as assessed by a treadmill test.

A total of 16.7 percent of the participants used any means of active commuting to reach their workplace.

The study showed active commuters were less likely to be overweight or obese and have healthier triglyceride levels, blood pressure and insulin levels.

The results add to existing evidence that walking or biking to work is beneficial.

“Furthermore, increasing active commuting will have the dual benefits of increasing population health and in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Environmental supports for commuting, such as physical environment and sociocultural factors, have been shown to promote active forms of commuting,” said the authors.

The study has been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. (ANI)

Brit teens know the cost of an iPod, but not of bread

London, May 28 (ANI): Brit teenagers are more conversant about the cost of an iPod, but are completely ignorant when it comes to the price of a loaf of bread according to a survey.

On average the youngsters estimated the cost of an iPod Nano was 105 pounds, only 5 pounds less than its usual retail sale.

However, in their opinion, the average cost of bread was 4.31 pounds.

While one respondent said that the price of bread was 200 pounds, another said a penny.

Bread usually costs between 80p and 1.50 pounds, reports the Telegraph.he Young Enterprise poll of 1,000 12- to 19-year olds found that the most of the teenagers were uneducated in the general cost of living.

They thought that half a dozen eggs would cost around 2.41 pounds, while a basic box usually costs around 1.50 pounds.

And the average cost of a house, in their opinion was believed to be 1.2 million pounds, but the latest government figures put the current average cost at 187,193 pounds.

The poll found that girls are the least confident, with two thirds saying they are not prepared to manage their finances, compared to half of boys.

Lampard rubbishes ex-fiancee’s neglect claims

London, Apr.25 (ANI): Chelsea mid-fielder Frank Lampard took the extraordinary step of calling a radio show to defend himself against suggestions that he had abandoned his two daughters by letting them live “in inferior circumstances” after he split with his Spanish fiancie Elen Rives.

In an emotional exchange, Lampard said he called James O’Brien’s phone-in programme on LBC to defend himself against “idiots like you” after the presenter said men who behaved in that way were “weak and scum”.

Rives had claimed that she and Luna, two, and Isla, one, were living in a small flat, while Lampard stayed in their 8.5 million pound town house.

“The hardest part of this whole break-up for me is not waking up with my kids every day. It breaks my heart – do you think I’m happy? You don’t know anything about me. I find it insulting that you are insinuating that I am weak and scum. You’re saying ‘Any man that lets his kids live in inferior circumstances to him is weak and scum’. You’re insinuating that about me,” The Telegraph quoted Lampard, as saying.

Lampard said he and Rives had joint custody of the children, who spent three nights a week with him, and that they were only staying in a flat as a temporary measure until he bought a house for them and Rives.

He said he was already “distressed” because yesterday was the first anniversary of the death of his mother, Pat.

Lampard, who is worth 30-million-pounds and earns 120,000-pounds-a-week, said: “Unfortunately I’ve split up with my girlfriend so they’re now living in a temporary flat in Fulham. It’s not a bad flat at all and I’m actually buying a house at the moment which is of equal living standard if not more to mine. When you split up obviously you’re not going to carry on living in the same place, that’s a fact of life.”

He added: “For three nights of the week, half the nights of the week, and I’m away probably two to three nights with my football anyway, the kids wake up in my house. I look after my kids solely. I have a nanny that comes but I spend all the time with my kids.

“I wake up if my kids wake up at three in the morning, if they wake up at six in the morning, regardless of whether there is a football match or not. They wake up in the bedrooms I decorated for them and that’s what they’ll always do.

“Everything I do in my career in football terms, before I had kids it was all for myself and since I’ve had kids, every penny I earn and every ounce and every yard I run on the football pitch is for my kids.”

Lampard, who cheated on Elen at least twice during their seven-year relationship, then angrily rounded on O’Brien.

He said: “So before you start insinuating and calling people weak and scum on a radio station, getting on a high horse which you are, I hope one day that your wife or your girlfriend doesn’t come to you and say I don’t want to be with you anymore and unfortunately that means you won’t see the kids for a few days a week. That will hurt you as well but you’d have to deal with it.” (ANI)

BNP to drop Fortis efforts if next vote is no: CEO

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA) will abandon its attempts to buy the assets of Fortis (FOR.BR) if shareholders of the stricken Dutch-Belgian group reject the latest revised deal this month, BNP’s chief executive said.

“If it’s ‘no,’ the game will be over for us. On this point, I am ready to bet a box of chocolates, Belgian of course,” Baudoin Prot, the CEO of the French bank, was quoted as saying by Belgium’s Le Soir newspaper in comments published on Saturday.

After an 11.2 billion euro ($14.87 billion) cash injection failed to calm investors, Fortis was carved up by the Dutch, Belgian and Luxembourg governments in October.

BNP is poised to buy 75 percent of Fortis Bank in Belgium, which was once the banking arm of listed Fortis Holding but is now in state hands.

Fortis shareholders rejected the previous terms of this deal in February. They are set to vote on a revised plan at meetings scheduled for April 28 and 29.

Under the new terms, Fortis Bank would acquire a 25 percent stake in Fortis Insurance Belgium from Fortis Holding for 1.375 billion euros, with the financing guaranteed by BNP.

This new version would allow Fortis Holding to continue as an insurance company and would lower its exposure to toxic assets.

Shareholder agreement to the revised deal became more likely on Friday, when a Belgian court ruled that all Fortis investors — not just those who held shares when Fortis was broken up in October — may vote in the meetings at the end of April.

Fortis shares, which had previously been regarded as a solid investment, are now little more than a penny stock.

Prot stressed in the interview that, should the buyout go through, the chairman of the board of Fortis Bank would be a Belgian.

“This was not our idea at the start but, after some reflection, we have decided it would be better that way,” Le Soir quoted Prot as saying.

He said BNP had yet to decide who it would name to the post.

“I would like to name a strong Belgian figure, emanating from the business world, who is well familiar with the needs of the Belgian economy,” Le Soir quoted Prot as saying.

Money troubles leave ‘millionaire’ boxer Eubank homeless, alone

London, Apr 12 (ANI): Fallen millionaire boxer Chris Eubank’s money troubles have left him homeless and alone.

The once swaggering former world middleweight champion has been forced to swap his lavish ways for a sad, lonely life in a hotel room, News of the World reported.

The 42-year-old dandy-who earned more than 35million pounds from the ring-has lived at the hotel in Brighton for four months because he has no other place to stay.

Hotel Staff says that he is a loner who sips lime and sodas in the hotel bar, then surfs the internet in his room at night.

Lisping Eubank was a hero to millions of British boxing fans in the 1990s. But the Inland Revenue delivered him a knockout blow in 2005, when he was declared bankrupt owing 1.3 million pounds in unpaid taxes.

Once so rich he used Evian water to wash his hands at petrol stations, Eubank now treats himself to sweets from Tesco’s across the street from his 149 pounds-a-night MyHotel pad in the Sussex town.

“We don’t think of him as a guest any more, he lives here. He’ll talk to fans and sign autographs. But we never see him taking a woman up to his room. Sometimes he’ll get a massage in the hotel spa. Other than that, he keeps to himself.”

Eubank was attracted by the hotel’s New Age theme. It has a feng shui design to “refresh your soul” and rooms have a decor of crystals and lotus flowers.

He was forced to move there after selling his 4million pounds Brighton mansion and another 850,000 pounds former home in nearby Hove to pay off his debts.

Last year ex-wife Karron, 43, told how Chris had begun globetrotting to exotic spots. But now he has been deserted by his circle of hangers-on and is having to watch every penny. (ANI)

Strict audit trail needed for every single penny of US military aid to Pakistan: Mullen

Washington, Apr.3 (ANI): The United States has announced a three fold increase in civilian aid to Pakistan, and is also planning to spend another three billion dollars over the next five years to equip and train the Pakistan Army against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, but the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen has made it clear that there is an urgent need to maintain a check on the aid to ensure its proper and correct use.

“There hasn’t been an audit trail, and there hasn’t been accountability measures put in place, and there needs to be for all the funds,” Admiral Mullen told The New York Times.

Admiral Mullen said that it was very important that this counterinsurgency aid be spent for what it is being sent for, and certainly not for any other activity.

“It is critical that it goes for exactly that and nowhere else,” Admiral Mullen stressed.

Commenting on the recent surge in Talibani activities on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghnistan border, Admiral Mullen said the outfit is planning to establish its grip over a larger part of the region.

“They are coming toward Islamabad and they are actually going toward Kabul. I’m completely convinced that the vast majority of the leaders in Pakistan understand the seriousness of the threat,” he added.

Commenting on the increased threat perception for Pakistan from the western border rather than its eastern border in Pakistan, and the need for Islamabad to understand the importance of securing its porous border along Afghanistan, Admiral Mullen said the Pak Army has certain difficulties as it was trained only for acting against India along the eastern front.

“That’s not going to change overnight,” he added. (ANI)

When Penny Lancaster had a fit of shyness

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Brit model Penny Lancaster was spotted displaying her shy side as she left London’s Dorchester hotel, with her legs covered up.

Lancaster, 38, who is married to rock singer Rod Stewart, was wearing one of her usual ultra-short dresses and black tights, but when they developed a ladder she took them off.

“It seems Penny thought she was showing a bit too much bare leg as she got two friends to cover up her legs with a shawl as she left the venue when she saw snappers were waiting,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying.

“When she then got in the car, she made sure her legs were clamped closely together to avoid any unnecessary display of flesh. She seemed to find it all highly amusing,” the source added. (ANI)

Winehouse’s father calls her ‘stupid’ for hankering after her hubby

London, Mar 17 (ANI): Troubled singer Amy Winehouse’s father is so weary of her hankering after her estranged husband Blake Fielder-Civil that he has called her “a stupid girl”.

Mitch revealed that his daughter plans on having a heart-to-heart with her hubby Fielder-Civil, who was released from jail last month, and he fears that the Rehab singer is trying to get back with him.

“Amy wants to resolve the situation. She’s guilty of loving him, stupid girl,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“I’m not saying she is going back to him, she just wants to talk. But I want her to get divorced. I want Blake and his family out of our lives.

“It’s the only chance Amy has. She nearly ended up dead thanks to him,” he added.

Mitch also told Closer magazine that he would do his best to make sure that Fielder-Civil did not get a penny of his daughter’s fortune.

“He’s after 5million pounds. Does he think we’re idiots?” he said.

“Amy’s a musical talent, but since she’s been with Blake she’s barely been able to perform on stage, let alone make a record,” he added. (ANI)

1,000 people join Facebook’s ‘Get Gary Glitter Out Of Herne Bay’ gang

London, Mar 7 (ANI): A Facebook group has seen more than 1,000 people joining it after it was set up to banish pop paedophile Gary Glitter from their town after he was spotted drinking in a seaside pub.

Glitter, 64, has according to residents in Herne Bay, Kent, been sighted several times around the town, and it has also been speculated that he is looking to set up home in the area.

The group, called Get Gary Glitter Out Of Herne Bay, claims the former glam rock star walked into a pub with a female friend, where he had a pint.

“He had a shaved head and a grey goatee and was with a woman,” the Daily Star quoted a regular at the Bun Penny pub, who did not want to be named, as saying.

“We were taking the mickey out of him but didn’t for a second think he might be the real Gary Glitter.

“But then we got to thinking and heard that other people had seen him in the area and we put two and two together.

“Come to think of it, it really did look just like him.

“If I’d known at the time I’d have asked him to politely get out of the pub.

“We don’t want his sort around here,” he stated.

Another drinker, father-of-eight Shane Lee, said: “He’s a filthy pervert; wherever he is no children are safe.”

Kent Police have issued a statement to calm tensions in the town.

“Protecting the residents of Kent remains paramount to Kent Police,” detective Chief Inspector Paul Fotheringham, from the force’s public protection unit, said.

“We work closely to monitor the behaviour of registered sex offenders in the county to minimise any risk to the public that may exist.

“We will also liaise with other forces when offenders move out of the policing area of Kent.

“We will not discuss any details about named registered sex offenders, which extends to confirming or denying speculation about where they may live,” he added. (ANI)

Aniston’s $56,000 hair styling is worth it, claim experts

New York, Mar 6 (ANI): Jennifer Aniston’s 56,000 dollars a week pay out to bring her hairstylist along on her ‘Marley and Me’ Europe tour might have raised many eyebrows, but elite stylists have claimed that such a fee is totally worth it.

Legendary hair stylist Edward Tricomi, co-founder of the elite Warren Tricomi salons, says that such a jaw-dropping sum for hair like Aniston’s is worth every penny.

“You can’t put any price on it – it’s priceless,” the New York Daily News quoted Tricomi as saying.

Tricomi even likened Aniston and her pricey locks to a farmer, who might need a 4,000 dollars part to repair his tractor.

He said: “For celebrities, hair, make-up and stylists are exactly like that tractor part. They are the ones who create that aura for the celebrity and her look. These people are much in demand, so they’re worth every single penny they get – and more.”

Fellow stylist Philip Pelusi seconded Tricomi’s opinion by saying: “The most important accessory that you own is your hair.”

He further said that he “can understand” why some stylists charge so much to travel with a star.

“It’s not that the hairdresser wants to overcharge, but they need to make up what they lose in the salon,” he said.

Tricomi also pointed out that stylists like Chris McMillan, who is Jennifer Aniston’s mane man, are originators and not imitators, and their styles are the ones which are copied around the world.

“We’re the people who are creating the trends. It’s short-lived and other people collect on that,” he said.

Talking of some stylists’ astronomical fees, Pelusi said: “Even I’ve cringed on occasion.”

But, in his opinion, McMillan’s fee is not outrageous, and so believes Tricomi.

“I know mostly everybody would say this is really crazy, but most people don’t have a job like this,” said Tricomi. (ANI)

Sex is Britons’ mantra to beat credit crunch

London, Feb 25 (ANI): Recession hit Britons are increasingly relying upon sex to beat the credit crunch.

Although many companies are hard-hit by economic crisis and unemployment, the “seduction industry” is booming like never before.

More couples are spending on weekends in expensive hotels and meals in posh restaurants for steamy nights in, which has boosted sales for firms selling stuff to spice-up the bedroom action.

There has been a boom in the sales of sexy lingerie as women look towards adding some zest to their love lives.

Sex toy and love potion sellers say that profits are “through the roof”.

Beauticians have a similar reaction, as they claim that there’s been roaring trade in spray tanning, pedicures and manicures as women dress to impress their fellas.

A seminar at the Harrogate Lingerie and Swimwear Exhibition claimed that the cash crisis might just trigger a baby boom in nine months.

“The seduction industry is one sector that seems to be defying the credit crunch,” the Daily Star quoted Stylist Faye Sawyer, whose clients include the stars of TV talent show ‘The X Factor’, as saying.

“People may be taking more care of their cash but they are also taking more care of themselves.

“If you can’t afford to go out you stay in, and if you stay in there is one sure fire way of passing the time that doesn’t cost a penny.

“But the art of love takes time and effort. The lingerie industry is responding to that demand,” she added.

Stephanie Baker, whose Fun Factory store specialises in sex toys and love potions, said: “Business is booming for us.”

Keith Hyams, whose company Cake Lingerie makes exotic undies for pregnant women, said: “The credit crunch has been a disaster for many firms but we’ve never had it go good. We’re one underwear firm that isn’t going bust.”

Beautician Lois Robinson, who runs the Bizou Boutique in Yarm, North Yorks, said: “Women may be skimping on the shopping but when it comes to looking after themselves they aren’t cutting back.” (ANI)

Oldest German penny sells for 34,000 euros

Oldest German penny sells for 34,000 eurosDortmund, Germany – A tiny silver coin thought to be “the oldest German penny” sold at auction in the city of Dortmund on Monday for 34,000 euros (44,000 dollars).

The denarius coin was minted between 747 and 751 under King Pippin III of the Franks (714-768) to replace coinage of the ancient Roman empire and was rediscovered in
1981 in dirt in the western city of Trier.

While Roman coins are common, numismatists regard Pippin’s penny as the first specimen of independent coin issues in Germany. Germany phased out its last pennies in 2002 when the euro became legal tender.

The auction company WAG said the buyer was a private collector in western Germany. (dpa)

Winehouse won’t give Fielder-Civil a penny in divorce

London, Feb 7 (ANI): Fed with hubby Blake Fielder Civil publicly humiliating her, singer Amy Winehouse has reportedly contacted her lawyers, telling them that she doesn’t owe him anything.

Apparently, the ‘Back to Black’ hitmaker is determined that Blake won’t see a penny of her estimated 10-million pound fortune and is building up a cast-iron case to prove her point, reports the Mirror.

A source revealed: “What with the moral grounds for complaint – his public bad-mouthing of her – Amy decided to reduce her initial offer of ’100,000 pounds take-it-or-leave-it’, to zero.

“She’s adamant he’s been living off her coat-tails for too long and does not deserve a penny more.”

The insider added: “This is set to become the most acrimonious celebrity split of 2009. The knives are out.

“Blake has been bad-mouthing her and Amy feels totally betrayed. She supported him the entire time he was banged up first time around, and this is the thanks she gets.

“When he was released from jail and packed off to rehab, he didn’t even inform her. The first she heard of it was when the clinic invoiced her for 36,000pounds – she still has the fax to prove it.

“On top of this, Amy spent in excess of half a million pounds on Blake’s legal team in the past year, as well as on presents and surprises for him.”

The couple’s imminent divorce comes just 18 months after their fun wedding in Miami. (ANI)

‘Super-rich’ Ronaldo: I understand value of money

London, Feb 5 (ANI): Cristiano Ronaldo says he appreciates every penny of his multi-million fortune.

The 120,000pounds-a-week star, who owns four spectacular homes across Europe and is currently eyeing up a hotel complex in his native Madeira, is aware that Premier League footballers are criticised for chucking cash around like confetti.

But despite the green notes, Ronaldo accepts he is privileged to earn so much, reports the Daily Star.

He said: “I understand the value of money. A footballer’s career doesn’t go on forever.

“I spend for the short term sometimes, but I know what money means.” (ANI)

Oprah Winfrey’s donation to Obama’s inaugural committee missing

Washington, Jan 16 (ANI): Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has not donated a single penny to President Elect Barack Obama’s Inaugural Committee as of yet.

The chat show queen’s missing donations have dazed all, as she is known one of the most giving human beings.

On the other hand, it’s been reported that Winfrey will be hosting at least one luncheon next week in Washington, reports Fox News.

Winfrey reportedly has proven more of a vocal supporter of Obama than a financial one, as she donated only 2,300 dollars to his primary campaign, nothing to the presidential one, and zilch to the Democratic Party. (ANI)
