Just like humans, apes suffer from self-doubt too

London, April 19 (ANI): Just like humans, apes are sufficiently self-aware to doubt their own knowledge, says a new study.

As part of the research, Josep Call of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, put food in one of two opaque plastic pipes and had watching bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans pick the one with the food.

Call found that if they were made to wait, the apes sometimes forgot where the food was, but by and large they did well on the task, reports New Scientist.

To find out if the apes doubted their own decisions, Call gave them the option to peek into the end of the pipes before they chose one.

He found that the apes were more likely to check the pipes if they had to wait before picking one.

Call says this suggests that the apes had begun to doubt their memory.

The study has been published in the journal Animal Cognition. (ANI)

Community group hopes to create mid-north NSW legal centre

An advocacy group will apply for funding for a Community Legal Centre pilot program on the New South Wales mid-north coast

Community Legal Centres provide help and advice for people who are disadvantaged or struggling financially.

Catherine Peek from Disability Advocacy NSW says there are no centres between Newcastle and Lismore.

Ms Peek met with the Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland in Port Macquarie to discuss how to get a centre for the mid-north coast.

“It was a really positive meeting,” she said.

“He’s made some suggestions to the group and one of those suggestions was to apply to his department for a small amount of pilot project funding.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to set up a pilot in the area over the next couple of years to get something off the ground.

Ms Peek says she thinks there is a huge need for a community legal centre in the region.

“We’ve got an ageing population, a high Indigenous population and more and more migrants and refugees,” she said.

” I think all of those groups would great benefit in having a centre where they knew that they could get free and accessible legal advice for any issue.”

Planck spacecraft obtains first peek of big bang’s ‘afterglow’

London, September 18 (ANI): European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Planck spacecraft has obtained its first peek at the afterglow of the big bang, revealing it in unprecedented detail.

The ESA spacecraft was launched into space on May 14 this year. It is observing the glow of hot gas from just 380,000 years after the big bang, called the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

According to a report in New Scientist, the detailed properties of this background may contain hints of hidden extra dimensions or multiple universes, as well as providing clues to what caused a brief, early period of incredibly rapid cosmic expansion.

Planck began surveying the microwave background on August 13, a few weeks after reaching its planned perch 1.5 million kilometres from Earth at a point called L2 and cooling its detectors to within 0.1 degrees Celsius above absolute zero.

Now, the Planck team has released the probe’s first image, an observational strip covering about 5 per cent of the sky.

Slight variations in temperature from place to place in the early universe give the image its mottled appearance.

“With a few per cent of the data in, you can see it’s working well and delivering good stuff,” said team member George Efstathiou of the University of Cambridge.

Planck is expected to provide the most detailed all-sky map of the cosmic microwave background yet, improving on the best current map, obtained by NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), which launched in 2001.

Planck’s detectors have more than 10 times the sensitivity of WMAP’s, and about 2.5 times the angular resolution.

“Every strip that Planck scans, we’re getting data that is many, many times more sensitive than WMAP,” Efstathiou told New Scientist.

Although Planck was only designed to observe the sky for 15 months, the team believes it could last for more than 30 months, based on new estimates of how long its coolant will last.

The extra time will allow Planck to measure the radiation with even greater precision, since it will scan the entire sky four times – two more than originally planned. (ANI)

Barrage of small meteorite impacts cause the moon to “hum”

London, September 9 (ANI): A new research has suggested that a steady barrage of small meteorite impacts cause the moon to “hum”.

But, no seismometers sent to the moon to date have been sensitive enough to hear the “hum”.

According to a report in New Scientist, Philippe Lognonne at the Institute of Earth Physics of Paris and colleagues decided to work out how loud the ring is.

The team estimated the meteorite population in the solar neighbourhood, and calculated the likely seismic signals that would be created by a range of meteorite sizes and velocities as they strike the moon.

To determine how the vibrations from these impacts would be seen by seismometers, the team used data taken by Apollo seismometers four decades ago.

These measured the vibrations created by the landings of lunar modules and spent rocket stages.

Since the precise locations and timing of these landings were known, they could be used to gauge how long it would take vibrations caused by meteorite impacts to travel through the moon, and how much the signals might dim.

Their calculations revealed space rocks with masses ranging from a gram to a kilogram do indeed create a hum, but it is subtle.

Earth’s hum, created by pounding waves, is more than 1000 times louder.

“This shows that all planets may hum, those with and those without atmosphere,” said Lognonne.

“The moon-hum’s quietness means future lunar seismometers should be able to peek deep within the moon without the hum creating problematic background noise, he added.

Instead, seismometers can focus on measuring waves created by moonquakes, tremors created by a variety of sources, including the tidal tug of the Earth.

Because seismic waves are sensitive to the type, arrangement and density of rocks they pass through, studying the quakes can reveal more about the moon’s interior.

The network of seismometers left by the Apollo missions has been shut down since 1977, so Lognonne hopes more sensitive instruments will be sent to the moon soon.

These could reach deeper than the Apollo network to measure the size of the moon’s core.

“I think the study is a great idea,” said Clive Neal of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, who was not associated with the research.

“Estimating the actual background noise is critical for designing the next generation of seismometers to go to the moon,” he added. (ANI)

Now, film adaptation of Slumdog writer’s second book to make millions

London, May 24 (ANI): A British film producer is relishing the chance to adapt ‘Slumdog Millionare’ author Vikas Swarup’s second book into a movie.

Paul Raphael is said to have joined forces with BBC Films and ‘Trainspotting’ screenwriter John Hodge to make a film based on ‘Six Suspects’, a Delhi-set murder mystery.

The rights to make a film on Six Suspects is being seen as a compensation for Raphael because he had also tried to obtain rights to make a film on Slumdog Millionare, but discovered that they had already gone.

He was given an exclusive peek at Swarup’s second novel and optioned it last year, several months before Slumdog was released and became a box office phenomenon.

Hollywood studios anxious to join the project are now said to have swamped Raphael with calls.

“The success of Slumdog has transformed interest in the project,” the Daly Express quoted Raphael as telling from the Cannes Film Festival.

“I’m very lucky to have a property that can benefit from the reality of the way films get made and marketed these days,” he added.

Describing the plot, Raphael said: “I read about a hundred pages and just knew that I wanted to do it. It’s a great whodunnit in a very unusual setting.”

He further said that just like Slumdog, the second book also offered a kaleidoscopic portrait of modern India.

He said that it is about a murdered playboy and the six suspects who all had reason to kill him, including a Bollywood actress, a mobile phone salesman and an illiterate boy.

“It has a lot to say about modern India. All the suspects are from completely different walks of life. It’s very original and has a distinct voice and sense of humour and John Hodge will bring something amazing to it,” said Raphael.

Getting Green Done

GreenBiz Staff

If sustainability were quick and easy — as many consultants suggest — we’d have done it by now.

Everyone’s talking green, but global carbon dioxide emissions are climbing, and climate scientists tell us we have under a decade to solve the problem. We need fewer visionaries, and more grunts. It’s time to make stuff happen. Auden Schendler, a sustainability foot soldier with fifteen years in the trenches, shows the way in this witty, human and contrarian book.

Brutally honest and hopeful, Getting Green Done is the first sustainable business book to offer a peek under the hood of the “green” movement, showing what it means to implement climate solutions in the real world. You’ll learn that sustainability is more like trench warfare than surgery — and that we’re going to have to do a lot better than we’ve done if we hope to solve climate change.

Facebook may help catch cheating boyfriends

London, April 8 (ANI): Facebooking may be a great way to meet strangers but it could also give you the shock of your life. That’s what happened with Michelle Westby, 21, when she looked at a stranger’s photos on Facebook only to find her own boyfriend cheating.

The receptionist and part-time model had clicked on fellow model Toni Colville’s album to get ideas for her fashion poses, reports the Sun.

She then decided to take a peek at Toni’s holiday photos and discovered images of her cuddling Jason Jennings-Brown, 23, who Michelle had been dating for six months.

Through the social networking site, Michelle got to know that the love rat had been two-timing her with unsuspecting Toni, 21.

And Michelle, from Stevenage, Herts, fears he may have duped other women.

She said: “Toni had some great pictures. Scrolling through them I saw she had an album entitled ‘Holiday in Egypt’, which I opened. I admit looking at the personal pictures was sheer nosiness, but what else is Facebook for?

“Clicking through them my hand suddenly froze over the mouse. Staring back was my boyfriend, Jason, with his arms around this pretty stranger.

She added: “I felt sick and couldn’t believe it. What are the chances of looking at a total stranger’s pictures and seeing your boyfriend cheating in them?” (ANI)

Julia Roberts’ male co-stars gave her early insight into male psyche

London, Feb 21 (ANI): American actress Julia Roberts has revealed that she is grateful to have shared screen time with the male actors she worked with, as they gave her an early insight into the male psyche.

Roberts, 41, has acted with actors Richard Gere, Mel Gibson, Denzel (Washington) and Dennis Quaid, and the friendship she formed with them let her have a peek at the world of men.

The actress, who is now married to cameraman Danny Moder, admits that developing a platonic bond with the leading men helped her gain confidence around the opposite sex.

“Early on, I worked with Richard Gere and Denzel (Washington) and Dennis Quaid and Mel Gibson, and all these profoundly smart, handsome guys,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling Allure magazine.

“I was lucky enough to be part of their lives and become friends with them, and it is interesting to understand a solid perspective of the male psyche as a person who’s non-threatening to that guy.

“Men are so revealing when they’re not trying to woo you, when you’re not intimidated or being flirty, when you’re just interested,” she added. (ANI)
