Carey Mulligan falls for Manhattan

London, May 12 (ANI): British actress Carey Mulligan has fallen for Manhattan.

Mulligan, who is about to appear in the sequel to Wall Street, says she is ‘happiest there’, reports the Telegraph.

“I love New York – maybe more than Los Angeles or London, I could live in New York. I think I’m happiest [there].

“In London, people can be so … well, it’s not even a case of people being unkind or unfriendly. You just don’t make any contact. You go from A to B with your eyes on the pavement,” she said.

She added: “New York is more social, and I didn’t expect that. If you’re walking down the street in LA, people do sort of look at you like you’re a hooker because it’s so rare to see someone just walking.” (ANI)

Rooney dazed as 17-year-old clubber dies next to him

London, Apr 27 (ANI): Ace striker Wayne Rooney, who was celebrating winning PFA Player of the Year, was left dazed after a 17-year-old clubber partying yards away from him collapsed and died.

Cole and Rooney were out with brother Graeme celebrating winning the award earlier that night. The Manchester United star was escorted out by a bouncer and then quizzed by police as a potential witness.

Rooney and Chelsea left-back Cole were said to have been nearby when the Portuguese tourist suffered a suspected heart attack at London’s swanky Whisky Mist at around 1.20 am on Tuesday.

The teen, said to have a history of health problems, was carried out by bouncers and given a Red Bull energy drink in an attempt to revive him, The Sun reports.

Paramedics were called and carried out heart massage with a defibrillator on the pavement. He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead soon after arrival.

A spokesman for Rooney said: “As Wayne was leaving he was asked, as were all other guests, whether he had seen anything. He simply told police he had seen nothing and was not aware of any incident.”

Cole, 29, also said he did not see anything suspicious.

Man dies after crashing through nightclub window

A man is dead and two others injured after they fell through a nightclub window on the Gold Coast.

Police and building inspectors are investigating the fatal fall.

Police say three men crashed through a full-length glass window and fell nine metres to the ground outside the SAR Club in Orchid Avenue just before 1am AEST.

Paramedics treated them but the 19-year-old man died at the scene.

Two 18-year-old men are in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police say Workplace Health and Safety officers and building inspectors will compile reports and they will be sent to the coroner.

A post mortem examination is also expected to be done today.

Police on the Gold Coast say it is unlikely charges will be laid over the fatal fall.

Superintendent Jim Keogh says he has viewed security footage of the incident and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

“They’ve overbalanced – the full-length glass has given way, broken and the three have fallen the nine metres to the pavement below,” he said.

“It was a minor grapple – there was no punches thrown.”

Superintendent Keogh says the cause of the incident is not clear.

“That’s still the subject of an investigation at the moment being conducted by Surfers Paradise CIB,” he said.

Superintendent Keogh says it is to early to know whether the incident was alcohol fuelled.

“It is something that obviously the investigators will look at the alcohol consumption of all involved,” he said.

Erykah Badu’s strip act in ‘Window Seat’ under fire

Washington, Mar 30 (ANI): Singer Erykah Badu has come under fire for stripping in her latest music video ‘Window Seat’.

The video was shot in and around Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas.

It shows Dallas native Badu walking down Elm Street while stripping her clothes off one piece at a time – until she”s fully nude.

Elm Street is the place where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Badu walks between several people on the street, and a few can be seen staring at her as she strolls and strips.

Badu is completely nude as she approaches the spot on Elm where Kennedy was shot (which is marked with an “X” on the pavement).

The sound of a gunshot can be heard and Badu collapses as if she has been shot.

Streaks of blue “blood” then spill from her head as she lays in the street, spelling the word “groupthink.”

A Dallas city spokesman said that Badu did not have permission for the stunt, reports the Dallas Morning News.

“The production company that produced this video never contacted the City to seek the proper permits. This is known as “guerilla filming” where production companies circumvent the proper permitting procedures and usually shoot these scenes in one take knowing that if they are discovered they would face arrest and/or penalties,” CBS News quoted the spokesman as saying.

Badu said on Twitter that the video was shot in one take.

She also said that she heard people yelling things at her, but she kept walking.

Badu, who has three children, also said she worried that she might traumatize the children who were there at the time.

Badu has reportedly said the video is intended to launch a discussion of “groupthink.” (ANI)

Katie Price gets caught in a brawl at cage fighting event

London, September 7 (ANI): Hottie Katie Price was caught in a brawl, and got floored by gipsy bare-knuckle boxers, while watching a cage fighting event with her new lover Alex Reid.

The cage fighter, too, got hit in the face at the Extreme Brawl event in West London on Saturday.

It was apparently a group of gipsy bare-knuckle fighters who had been drinking all evening, and started the tussle with Reid.owever, one of the knuckle fighters insisted that Reid had “asked for it”.

“He wound me up. He’s an arrogant w***** who was walking around like he owned the place. We had a problem with him and were going to sort it out but he chickened out. He deserves to get his head kicked in,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

The couple were among spectators watching the Extreme Brawl event at the Radisson Edwardian Heathrow Hotel in Hayes, West London.

The fight soon turned into a riot like situation, according to Price’s friend who was also present.

However, the couple were escorted out of the hotel, and into waiting cars as fighting spilled on to the pavement.

“The fight broke out because some gipsies were winding up Alex. He didn’t retaliate but people he was with got involved. It turned into a riot,” the pal said.

A source said: “Suddenly there was this loud row and people started shoving each other and punches were thrown.”

The event organiser and Mixed Martial Art promoter Andy Jardine briefed how the fight broke out.

“Unfortunately these guys had some argument with Alex. One of the fighters fancied his chances and wanted to prove himself by offering Alex outside, which was a stupid thing to do,” he said.

“He said he wanted to fight Alex and Alex said, ‘I’m not being funny, but you’ve just had your first fight and lost and I’ve fought some of the best in the world’.

“He didn’t like that answer and the fight started there. The security team were involved. Everyone was grappling with each other. They got everyone outside and some people’s shirts came off.

“Alex isn’t fazed about it at all. He doesn’t need it but it doesn’t bother him,” he added.

Though police responded fast to the situation, no arrests were made.

The police said: “We responded to reports of a fight at the Radisson at around 11.50pm on Saturday. There were no complaints and no arrests.” (ANI)

Murdered Iranian woman’s killer identified

Tehran, Aug.20 (ANI): The man accused of killing Iranian woman protester Neda Soltan during an opposition rally against the June 20 presidential result, has been identified as Abbas Kargar Javid, a pro-government militiaman.

The identification challenges the Iranian regime’s claim that foreign agents shot the young woman, who became a global symbol of resistance to the Government of President Ahmadinejad.

One picture appears on Javid’s Basij identification card, which was taken off him by the crowd that stopped him briefly when he fled the murder scene during a massive demonstration against electoral fraud on June 20.

Photographs of that card and another that was issued by the Interior Ministry have been posted on the Internet, and the doctor who tried to save Soltan as she lay dying on a Tehran pavement has confirmed that they show the man who was stopped, reports The Times.

“I can testify for certain that it is the same person,” Dr. Arash Hejazi told The Times.

Dr Hejazi said that he had checked with others who witnessed Javid’s detention and they, too, had confirmed that it was the same man.

The regime has put blame for Ms Soltan’s murder on fellow demonstrators, the CIA, hostile foreign governments including Britain, and even the BBC.

Dr Hejazi, a student at Oxford Brookes University, had returned to Iran for a business trip after the June 12 election but he fled after featuring prominently in the video of Soltan’s last moments. (ANI)

Four injured in building collapse following incessant rains in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 5 (ANI): Four people sleeping on a pavement were injured when an old building collapsed on them during incessant rains, which have been lashing Mumbai since Saturday morning.

“It collapsed at around 12:30 a.m. and four people who were sleeping in footpath were injured. They have been taken to the G.T. hospital,” Sanjay Mohite, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said on Sunday.

Incessant downpours have flooded various streets and disrupted air, rail and road traffic.

According to reports, water logging is reported in areas like Hindmata, Kalachowkie, Mahim Junction, Andheri-Kurla road and Ghatkopar.

Officials said the rain triggered a landslide in suburban Bhandup and a wall collapsed at Mahul near Shiv Sena office.

Incidents of tree felling were reported at 12 places. However, there were no reports of any casualties.

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old woman died of electrocution in Govandi.

The weather department had forecast frequent spells of rain, with the possibility of a heavy downpour over the next 48 hours in some parts of the city. (ANI)

Drunk driver crushes three sleeping on Delhi pavement

New Delhi, May 28 (IANS) A 31-year-old accountant was arrested here Thursday for allegedly running his car over people sleeping on a pavement in northwest Delhi while returning home after getting drunk – killing a man, his son and a child and injuring three more people.

At 1.25 a.m, Navin Jain was returning to his Keshavpuram home from a marriage function in Gurgaon, adjacent to the national capital, in his Maruti Alto car when he lost control. The car climbed a pavement near Kanhaiya Nagar Metro station close to his house.

Police said around 15 people were sleeping on the pavement then. Jain’s car reportedly ran over Deepak, 8, and Guddu, 12 and Chanderpal, 50. It also hit two brothers Harinder, 12, and Jitender, 9, and 46-year-old labourer Lala Ram.

According to eyewitnesses, Jain, who works as an accountant with a steel factory in Wazirabad Industrial Area, was heavily drunk.

“He was so drunk that he did not even realise what had happened. People had to drag him out of his car. He was roughed up,” said Shyam Lal, who was also sleeping on the pavement.

Another labourer Shiv Prasad said: “The car just zipped passed me. I was fortunate that I did not get killed. The driver was drunk and could not even stand on his feet after he was dragged out. The driver said he could not see the people sleeping on the pavement.”

Police rushed the victims to the Bhagvan Mahavir Hospital where doctors pronounced Deepak and Guddu dead. Deepak’s father Chanderpal succumbed to his injuries early in the morning.

Guddu’s father Lala Ram was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and his condition remained serious till Thursday evening. Harinder and Jitender were in Bhagvan Mahavir Hospital.

Police said they had arrested Jain under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and for drunken driving.

“Jain was speeding and was under the influence of alcohol. We have charged him under the stringent section of 304 of IPC,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest Delhi) N.S. Bundela.

Paint your roofs white to slow global warming, says Obama’s energy adviser

London, May 27 (ANI): US President Barrack Obama’s energy adviser has suggested that as part of efforts to slow global warming, all the world’s roofs should be painted white.

According to a report in the Telegraph, Professor Steven Chu, the US Energy Secretary, said that the unusual proposal would mean homes in hot countries would save energy and money on air conditioning by deflecting the sun’s rays.

More pale surfaces could also slow global warming by reflecting heat into space rather than allowing it to be absorbed by dark surfaces where it is trapped by greenhouse gases and increases temperatures.

The Professor described climate change as a “crisis situation”, and called for a whole host of measures to be introduced, from promoting energy efficiency to renewable energy such as wind, wave and solar.

The Nobel Prize-winning physicist said the US was not considering any large scale “geo-engineering” projects where science is used to reverse global warming, but was in favour of “white roofs everywhere”.
He said that lightening roofs and roads in urban environments would offset the global warming effects of all the cars in the world for 11 years.
“If you look at all the buildings and if you make the roofs white and if you make the pavement more of a concrete type of colour rather than a black type of colour and if you do that uniformally, that would be the equivalent of reducing the carbon emissions due to all the cars in the world by 11 years – just taking them off the road for 11 years,” he said. Soccer WAG left bleeding after savage club brawl

London, May 26 (ANI): Soccer wag Danielle Lloyd was left bloodied and screaming in agony outside a nightspot yesterday after a savage brawl.

Spurs star Jamie O’hara’s girlfriend is likely to need emergency plastic surgery, reports The Sun.
Last night Danielle, whose string of footballer lovers include ex-England star Teddy Sheringham, Spurs ace Jermain Defoe and Birmingham’s Marcus Bent, was recovering in hospital.
Cops arrested two women in their 20s for allegedly attacking her as she partied with 9,000-pound-a-week Jamie, 22.

The couple had been to a wedding before heading to the Crystal club in London’s West End – arriving hand-in-hand at 11 p.m.

Jamie was also left dripping in Danielle’s blood after she was allegedly hurled through a glass table in a vicious 2 a.m. catfight – sparked by two girls dancing on the back of a VIP sofa she was sitting on.

A witness said: “I think one kicked Danielle – it may have been an accident. She got up to remonstrate.

“I saw her in a tangle with at least one other woman. Punches and slaps were being thrown.

“Danielle came falling backward off the sofa and landed on a table. She cut her leg pretty badly. Jamie and some guy who may have been the other girl’s boyfriend were being held apart by bouncers who threw Jamie out.”

As she lay on the pavement, Danielle was heard shrieking: “My leg, my leg.” She needed stitches to a “serious” back wound as well as cosmetic surgery on her limb.

Scotland Yard confirmed they were investigating. (ANI)

Brad Pitt, brother donate $600k to Missouri university

Washington, May 20 (ANI): Brad Pitt and his younger brother Doug have together made a contribution of 600,000 dollars to a university in Missouri to help its sporting arena land an eco-friendly title.

The Hollywood heartthrob and his sibling donated the amount to Drury University in their native Springfield to lend a helping hand to the institution’s O’Reilly Family Event Center get a Gold Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design (LEED) certification.

According to PerezHilton.com, the arena, now the first one to boast of the title, has “low-flow water fixtures, a dedicated recycling area and a solar-reflective roof and pavement materials”, reports Contactmusic.

And in a bid to recognise the generous efforts of the brothers, school officials have decided to rename the court of the arena after their father.

It is now to be called as the William A. Pitt Court. (ANI)

Bouncer claims that he was called a ‘Fat Paki’ by football star Ledley

London, May 11 (ANI): A bouncer who was allegedly punched in the face by boozed up England football star Ledley King says he was called “fat Paki” by the latter.

Doorman Wahib Butt claims the boozed-up England ace taunted him about his earnings and hit him outside a London nightclub.

During the row King, 28, allegedly sneered at Wahib and other bouncers: “Do you not know who I am? I am a rich guy and I’ve got nothing to lose. I earn 80,000 pounds a week, you are nothing in your 10-poundan-hour job. I could make you lose your job.”

Wahib said: “He was so drunk we told him to come back when he was more sober. He walked across the road, opened his trousers and urinated all over the pavement in front of everybody. He came back and was so close to my face I could feel his spit on me.” (ANI)

Oldest patch of ground on earth discovered in Israel

Washington, May 6 (ANI): Scientists have discovered the oldest patch of ground on Earth in Israel’s Negev desert, which remains virtually the same as it was 1.8 million years ago.

According to a report in Live Science, the patch of ground is an expanse of “desert pavement” in Israel’s Negev Desert, and is claimed by scientists as the oldest continuous surface on earth.

Most of the earth’s surface is constantly, if not always rapidly, evolving – through erosion, volcanic activity, the movement of tectonic plates underneath the earth’s surface, and just plain old weather.

But, an unusual feature of deserts, which have little tectonic activity and terrain that’s resistant to their hot, dry weather, is that large surfaces of ground can remain virtually the same for millions of years.

“This is something we were not sure about until now,” said Ari Matmon, who headed up the study.

Matmon’s team from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem confirmed the age of the terrain by measuring concentrations of an isotope found only on the earth’s surface.

It also indicates how long the surface has been exposed to the elements.

The patch of terrain is four times older that the next oldest areas of desert, in Nevada, LiveScience.com reported, though there are individual rocks much older than any patch of ground. (ANI)

Ancient medieval buildings found beneath Cathedral Square in Britain

London, April 29 (ANI): Archaeologists excavating beneath Cathedral Square in Peterborough, UK, have found the remains of ancient medieval buildings.

Up to six archaeologists a day have been working on the site for several weeks in preparation for the main square improvement works, which are being delivered by Opportunity Peterborough and Peterborough City Council.

One of the buildings, which probably stood until the 17th Century, may be part of the old Butter Cross – a building in the market place where butter, eggs and meat were sold.

According to city archaeologist Ben Robinson, “The results so far are outstanding. We expected to find archaeological remains in Cathedral Square, but the range and quality of finds here is superb.”

“The archaeological team is tracing the previously unrecorded history of Peterborough’s ancient market place – literally peeling back the centuries to expose the surfaces and structures that would have been familiar to medieval citizens,” he said.

Beneath the modern pavement is a series of pitched limestone surfaces that were the market place, streets and gutters of earlier times.

Pieces of pottery, leather off-cuts, building materials, part of a bronze cauldron and animal remains dating back hundreds of years have also been uncovered.

“It’s not often we get a chance to dig holes in the middle of town. Our finds are significant in the development of Peterborough because there have been very few excavations in the historic core. We are carefully excavating and recording the remains that will be affected by the development,” said senior project officer Adam Yates.

Construction work in the Cathedral Square area is still aiming to be complete by Christmas while work to create the new square will continue until Easter 2010.

According to Steve Bowyer, director of growth at Opportunity Peterborough, “The project to improve Cathedral Square is a crucial investment for revitalising the city centre and taking it forward to a brighter future.”

“The archaeology we have found has provided a great insight into the city’s past that we would not have had without this project. Wherever possible we will adjust designs to ensure that the archaeology is protected as we deliver the scheme,” he said. (ANI)

Traffic jams, mishaps make it a nightmare

NEW DELHI: Traffic jams, accidents and snapped water pipelines the people living along Narwana Road in Patparganj have seen it all in the past two
years. The condition of this road has been so bad that rickshaws frequently overturned, traffic moved at a snail’s pace and frequent digging by DJB made it difficult to walk even on the pavement, say the residents.

“This road is not constructed properly. DJB keeps digging it up time and again. I was once going on a rickshaw on this road when it lost balance and overturned. Since then, I just prefer to walk, which is equally difficult as there is dust, pebbles and potholes everywhere,” said Rita Juneja, a resident of Vinod Nagar. Now, work is on for damage control before the elections but PWD says there is cost escalation and issues with the contractor.

B R Yadav of Ekta Gardens said, “Often pipelines are dug out and pipes are kept on the road here and there. It’s a complete mess and needs to be set right as soon as possible.”

The Narwana Road has 12 apartments on one side and nine on the other. Residents say they had to face a severe water problem in February as the underground pipelines had been cut due to digging of the road. “Water is just one problem. Driving on this road is so difficult as everyone wants to drive on the smooth part. As a result, the traffic gets clogged, specially during the evening rush hour,” says Rajesh Gupta, a resident of Block A.

Shubhra Ganguly, who lives in Oxford Apartment, says the “problem gets aggravated at night as the number of vehicles on this road increases significantly with people returning home from work. Walking amidst the traffic in the dark gets too risky.”

A resident of Vinod Nagar, dentist Upma Tomar, says she wanted to complain but didn’t know whom to turn to.

Michelle Obama tells London schoolgirls world needs more strong women

London, April 3 (ANI): U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama told pupils at a girls’ school in London on Thursday that more strong young women were needed to determine the world’s future.

“I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life who taught me about quiet strength and dignity,” the Independent quoted her as telling 100 children at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington, north London.

The school is said to have such a racial mix that the student body can speak 55 languages.

Michelle’s visit to the school was her first solo visit since her arrival in London.

The newspaper revealed that she drew a crowd of about 300 cheering onlookers on the pavement outside the school.

“You too can control your own destiny, please remember that. Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude,” she said while talking to the students.

“Although the circumstances of our lives may seem very disengaged, with me standing here as the First Lady of the United States of America and you just getting through school, I want you to know we have very much in common. For nothing in my life ever would have predicted that I would be standing here as the first African-American First Lady.

“I was not raised with wealth or resources or any social standing to speak of. I was raised on the South Side of Chicago – that’s the real part of Chicago,” she added. (ANI)

How a cup of coffee reduces pain during exercise

Washington, Mar 31 (ANI): A small cup of coffee in the morning might just help you push a little harder during your morning workout, and scientist have now found what makes caffeine reduce the pain during distance training and competitions and enhance an athlete’s performance.

A former competitive cyclist, University of Illinois kinesiology and community health professor Robert Motl admitted to having had coffee with his teammates to fuel up on caffeine prior to hitting the pavement on long-distance training rides.

“The notion was that caffeine was helping us train harder … to push ourselves a little harder,” he said.

He said that athletes consumed caffeine rich substances motivated by “the notion that it will help metabolise fat more readily.”

However, that’s not the reason for the caffeine-induced improved performance, and thus Motl investigated the relationship between caffeine, spinal reflexes and physical activity.

Earlier in his research, he became aware that “caffeine works on the adenosine neuromodulatory system in the brain and spinal cord, and this system is heavily involved in nociception and pain processing.”

And as Motl knew caffeine blocks adenosine from working, he speculated that it could reduce pain.

Many studies support the above conclusion, including investigations considering such variables as exercise intensity, dose of caffeine, anxiety sensitivity and gender.

“This study looks at the effects of caffeine on muscle pain during high-intensity exercise as a function of habitual caffeine use. No one has examined that before,” said Motl.

He added: “What we saw is something we didn’t expect: caffeine-na‹ve individuals and habitual users have the same amount of reduction in pain during exercise after caffeine (consumption).”

For the study, his team recruited 25 participants, who were fit, college-aged males.

The participants were then divided into two distinct groups: subjects whose everyday caffeine consumption was extremely low to non-existent, and those with an average caffeine intake of about 400 milligrams a day, the equivalent of three to four cups of coffee.

In both groups, the researcher found that caffeine tolerance did not matter.

“Clearly, if you regularly consume caffeine, you have to have more to have that bigger, mental-energy effect. But the tolerance effect is not ubiquitous across all stimuli. Even brain metabolism doesn’t show this tolerance-type effect. That is, with individuals who are habitual users versus non-habitual users, if you give them caffeine and do brain imaging, the activation is identical. It’s really interesting why some processes show tolerance and others don’t,” said Motl.

Regarding the outcome of the current research, he said: “it may just be that pain during exercise doesn’t show tolerance effects to caffeine.”

The study on the effects of caffeine on pain during exercise appears in the April edition of the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. (ANI)

Victorian ‘ghost’ caught on Google Street ViewVictorian ‘ghost’ caught on Google Street View

Victorian 'ghost' caught on Google Street ViewLondon, Mar 26 (ANI): Google Street View cameras have captured something that could send shivers down your spine – a ‘ghostly’ figure dressed in Victorian clothes.

The ghoul has been filmed at a former Victorian docklands, which has a dark and sinister past.

The footage appears to show a woman dressed in long skirt, crisp blouse, bow tie, blue boater hat and scarf shimmering above the pavement.

Google Street View cameras caught her in Tiger Bay, Cardiff – the scene of murders and unsolved mysteries going back 200 years.

The water sculpture seen in the picture is used as the gateway to enter the fictional world of Dr Who spin-off Torchwood.

“Apparitions have often been caught on film but are invisible to the naked eye,” the Telegraph quoted local medium Jane Cohen, 39, as saying.

“This woman is very smart – but she is dressed in clothes that you just don’t see these days unless it’s in a period drama on TV.But what is really strange is that she doesn’t appear as a full figure – you can’t see all of her,” Cohen added.

The old docklands has been redeveloped with a theatre, waterside restaurants and plush apartments.

However, according to local 8 the woman was filmed in the heart of the notorious Tiger Bay – once the busiest sea port in the world.

The image was filmed last June as the Google cameras filmed the treets and landmarks of the Welsh capital. (ANI)
