BJP to discuss its election strategy for Bihar

Patna (Bihar), June 11 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a two-day National Executive meeting beginning on Saturday in Patna to discuss its election strategy for Bihar.

The party is expected to launch its campaign in the State, where it is a major partner in the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Government.

This will also be a test for BJP President Nitin Gadkari, as this will be the party”s first electoral challenge after he took over the reigns.

The BJP is expected to go all out against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre for its alleged step motherly treatment towards non-Congress states and highlight its failures.

The failure of the Central Government to control rising prices and Naxalism would also figure in the resolutions.

“The top BJP leadership will minutely scrutinise the UPA Government”s performance in reference to its handling of terrorism and economy, Naxalite insurgency and the step motherly treatment meted to non-Congress, non-UPA governments in the states,” said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

A ”Rashtriya Swabhiman” (national pride) rally will be held at the conclusion of the meet, which will be addressed by top party leaders signalling the launch of the Bihar campaign.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be a prominent speaker in the rally, as this will be his first visit to Bihar after becoming Chief Minister in October 2001.

Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states will be attending the National Executive meeting, during which the party is expected to focus on the achievements of the Janata Dal-United Government led by Nitish Kumar in Bihar, which has logged 11 percent growth rate in the last five years. (ANI)

Heat wave continues unabated in North India

New Delhi/ Ahmedabad, May 15 (ANI): Various parts of the Country continue to reel under intense heat wave following the mercury shooting beyond the normal temperatures as on Saturday.

With the mercury hovering above the 45-degrees Celsius mark, tourists visiting New Delhi are having a tough time in the sizzling heat.

“Delhi is hotter than Patna but as we have come here to spend our vacation, we have to go out to enjoy the place…we have been carrying water and other liquid items so that we can give it to the children at regular intervals,” said Shaheen, a tourist from Patna.
Meanwhile, at Ahmedabad, locals were seen moving around with their faces covered to avoid the heat.

Ahmedabad saw a sharp rise in the maximum temperature and reportedly it was beyond 45 degrees mark.

“The weather is too hot. Earlier I used to leave for my office at around 10.30 in the morning but now I have started reaching office at around 9.30 so that I can avoid the extreme heat,” said Avinashbhai, a resident.

As per media reports, at least 30 persons have succumbed to heat across the country this year.

Temperatures usually go up to mid-forties at many places in northern India.

Usually, till the onset of the monsoon, the months of May-June are the hottest in the country with the temperatures hovering in the range of 40 to 45 degrees Celsius in several regions.

However, this year, the people were startled at the mercury shooting beyond the 40 degrees mark in the month of April itself. (ANI)

Conjoined twins ready to go home after surgery

New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): Formerly conjoined twins, Sita and Gita, who were separated at Delhi”s Batra Hospital earlier in April, are now ready to be sent home.

The twins were separated by a team of 27 doctors comprising of paediatric surgeons, orthopaedists, plastic surgeons and critical care specialists on April 5 in a surgery which took over 14 hours.

“After the surgery, the twins were in intensive care for a few days. They were later on shifted to the wards. Nutritionally, weight-wise, diet-wise, they are progressing very well,” said Dr Sanjeev Bagai, CEO of Batra Hospital and Research Centre.

The doctors at the Batra Hosptial have linked with a local hospital in Patna to keep tabs on the twins, as they will betaken over there after being discharged from the hospital.

“Earlier, it used to be so much trouble holding them. I am elated now. It”s easier to hold them now. Me and my husband hold each of them,” said Nirmala, mother of the twins.

The twins will be brought back to New Delhi later this year for a regular check-up.

Sita and Gita had common intestinal and urinary tracts. Parts of their pelvises, spines, hipbones and legs were also fused.

The surgery involved separating their spinal cords, pelvises and genitals, reproductive and urinary tracts. (ANI)

Centre declines permission to Bihar CM to visit Nepal

Patna, Apr 01 (ANI): The Union Government has denied permission to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to visit Nepal to attend the post-death rites of former Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.

Kumar is reportedly upset over the Union Government’s decision.

According to his office, Kumar was invited by Koirala’s daughter Sujata to attend her father’s post-death rites in Kathmandu on Thursday.

Kumar was eager to pay his last respects to Koirala.

In 2008, Government had denied Kumar permission to visit Nepal to oversee the Kusaha embankment repair work, where the River Kosi was breached.

Thousands of people from Bihar visit Nepal every day without any visa or passport, as there are no restrictions.

But a visit by a minister or a chief minister requires government permission, as it becomes a state visit to Nepal. (ANI)

Bihar raises reward for 20 wanted Maoists

Patna, March 17 (IANS) The Bihar government has doubled the reward money for 20 wanted activists of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist.

Now, the reward money has been upped to Rs.3 lakh in the case of Vijay Kumar Arya alias Jaipal and Rs.2 lakh for Jagdish Yadav alias Masterji. The two operate in Aurangabad and Gaya districts, police said.

The reward money for Sitaram Rajwar has been raised to Rs.1 lakh. Informants who help in getting Vijay Yadav and Birender Yadav arrested will get Rs.50,000.

The government last week admitted that 33 of the 40 districts were affected by Maoist violence. According to Bihar police chief Neelmani, 1,881 Maoists were arrested between 2006 and 2009.

Six arrested in Kolkata for misbehaving with air hostess

Kolkata, Mar 16 (ANI): The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took into its custody six youths after being offloaded from a Patna-Kolkata-Bangalore Indigo flight on accusations of misbehaving with an air hostess.

Sources said the six unruly youths began to misbehave with the air hostess soon after the flight took off from Kolkata and did not stop their act despite objections by her and the other crew-members.

After landing at Kolkata, they were offloaded by the Indigo officials and handed over to the CISF.

One of the accused, however, defended himself in front of TIMES NOW news channel saying that he was simply annoyed with the service as the crew refused to provide him with hot water. (ANI)

Rashtriya Janata Dal celebrates good show in Bihar by-polls

Patna, Sept 20 (ANI): The activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) here celebrated the party’s good show in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major set back to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

The JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won two seats.

The activists burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win at the party office.

RJD leader Lalu Prasad termed the results as referendum on the ruling government.

“It is not possible for the Bihar Government-led by Nitish Kumar to return. The RJD alliance will return to power. The people of Bihar have welcomed us with open arms,” said Yadav.

The RJD failed poorly in Lok Sabha election in April-May this year, winning just four seats out of the total 40 in Bihar. (ANI)

Police rescue kidnapped eight-year-old boy in Patna

Patna, Sept 18 (ANI): Police rescued an eight-year-old boy, who had been kidnapped at gunpoint while he was traveling to his school in Patna, earlier this week.

According to police, two out of three kidnappers have been arrested and a search is on for the third.

“The boy was recovered from Chhapra’s Baniyadpur police station. The three people who were involved in kidnapping of the boy; out of them two have been arrested,” said Parsh Nath Rai, inspector general.

Shreyas Srivastava was kidnapped at gunpoint in the heart of Patna while he was on his way to school on Sunday.

Three armed men overtook the auto rickshaw in which he was traveling to school and forced the driver to stop. Then, the boy was abducted from there.

Shreyas is a class one student of Christ Church School.

” We want to thank media and police authorities for giving their support,” said Sanjay Srivastava, Shreyas’s father. (ANI)

Rashtriya Janata Dal celebrates good show in by-polls in Bihar

Patna, Sep 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) celebrated its good show in state by-election on Thursday.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major setback to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally Bharatiya Janata Party won two seats.

RJD activists gathered at the party office and burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win.

Rabri Devi, leader of opposition in Bihar legislative assembly, termed the results as referendum against the ruling government.

“Bihar government led by Nitish Kumar is fooling the public. The people of Bihar have understood it and that’s why they have rejected the ruling party. I congratulate the people of Bihar. I am sure that people will keep on voting for Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance,” said Devi.

Patna schoolchildren protest against kidnapping of six-year-old boy

Patna, Sep. 16 (ANI): School students in Patna city protested on Wednesday against the kidnapping of a six-year-old boy.

Shresht Sanjay was kidnapped at the gunpoint in Patna on Monday. Shresht is a standard One student at Christ church school in Kankarbagh area.

Students of Montessori School in Patna organised a ‘hawan’ to pray for an early release of Shresht.

“We are praying so that Shresht Sanjay comes home soon and celebrates Diwali and Durga Puja with his parents, ” said Swastik, a student

Meanwhile, students in West Point school observed a ‘Black Day’ by wearing black bands on their arms.

The black band was to express their resentment against the rising incidents of kidnapping and ransom killings in the city.

“Children are living in fear and that’s why we have organised this ‘Black Day’. We hope that the government listens to us and realises that the children are in trouble here and their education is under threat. We also hope that such incidents does not happen in future,” said S.N Suhail, principal of West Point School.

Shresth is suspected to have been kidnapped for ransom.

However, the kidnappers have not made any demand yet.

The police are interrogating the auto-rickshaw driver for further investigations in which Shresth was travelling before his abduction. (ANI)

Bharatiya Janata Party criticises austerity drive

New Delhi/Patna, Sept 16 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised the austerity measures mooted by the Central Government in view of the economic downturn and drought-like situation prevailing in the country.

Addressing the media persons here on Tuesday, spokesperson of the BJP, Rajeev Pratap Rudy, said the austerity drive would not impress the masses.

He said that the government has not cared to check the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.

“The euphoria of austerity is a suspect. The futile chest beating will not impress a common man who is faced with high prices for food and other essential commodities,” said Rudy.

The BJP was also critical of journeys undertaken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi’s travel by train to Punjab on Tuesday.

“We want the Congress family would undertake a journey on Shatabdi in future also. We welcome it. Sonia Gandhi undertook a journey in economy class and we welcome it. But somewhere this has to be studied as to what is the cost that the country is paying for her austerity,” added Rudy.

Meanwhile in Patna, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the Central Ministers ought to travel by the three-tier sleeper class.

“Journeys should be undertaken in a three-tier bogie of a train, which would lay an impact on the masses that our leaders are following the path of Mahatma Gandhi. They would see that the Congress is taking the austerity drive to meet the financial crisis. This is my advice,” said Lalu. (ANI)

Polling begins for Bihar by-election

Patna, Sept 15 (ANI): Voting has begun for the by-election to 11 of the 18 assembly constituencies in Bihar this morning.

The polling will decide the fate of 99 contestants, including nine women.

The Janata Dal (United) is contesting from Bagha, Nautan, Dhoraiya, Triveniganj, Fulwari, Ghosi, Simri Bakhtiarpur and Munger constituencies while the BJP is from Bodh Gaya, Begusarai and Araria.

The RJD and the LJP has fielded its candidates from Bagha, Nautan, Dhoraiya, Fulwari, Munger, Simri Bakhtiarpur, Ghosi; and Bodh Gaya, Begusarai, Araria and Triveniganj respectively.

The Congress is contesting from all the constituencies.

Around 25,15,474 electors are expected to cast their vote at 2,620 polling stations spread over Bagha, Nautan, Begusarai, Triveniganj, Simri Bakhtiarpur, Araria, Dhoraiya, Munger, Fulwari, Ghosi and Bodh Gaya.

Central paramilitary force personnel have been pressed into service to avoid any kind of untoward incident. (ANI)

Eight-year-old kidnapped in Patna

Patna, Sep 14 (ANI): Unidentified persons in Patna kidnapped an eight-year-old boy at gunpoint in Patna on Monday at 7.30 am.hreyas Srivastava, is a standard one student at Christ church school in Kankarbagh area.

According to the police, the incident occurred early morning when Shreyas Srivastava was going to school along with other students in an auto-rickshaw when three motorcycle-borne persons stopped the auto-rickshaw at gunpoint.

“The incident occurred around 7.30 in the morning. The boy along with other children was going to school in the auto- rickshaw. Three men stopped the vehicle between Maurya hotel and exhibition road and took the child away on his motorbike,” said Parsh Nath Rai, Inspector General.

However, the kidnappers had not made any demand till morning.

Meanwhile, the police are interrogating the auto-rickshaw driver for further investigations. (ANI)

Absence of teachers keeps literacy rate low in Bihar

Patna, Sep 8 (ANI): Even as the world’s observing ‘International Literacy Day’ on Tuesday, Bihar continues to suffer from rampant illiteracy.

Despite the government’s repeated efforts to improve standards of teaching, schools are grappling with a lack of teaching staff and creaking infrastructure.

“We want to increase the number of students in our school, but this is only possible if there are more teachers. We want accommodate 2000 students in the school but we are not able to give admission to the students who come here as there are no teachers and no place to sit,” said Kamlesh Kumar, a teacher.

He added that their school has appealed to the authorities to take a notice of their condition.

The parents prefer keeping their kids at home. They feel that their kids are better at home playing.

“We don’t send our kids to the school because there are no teachers and if there are no teachers what will our kids study in school. That is why the children go to school, play for sometime and come back as there is no one to look after them in the school. Hence, my kids don’t go to the school and play on the streets,” said Mohammad Sarfuddin, a slum dweller.

The eradication of illiteracy has been one of the major programmes of successive Indian governments since independence.

The National Literacy Mission, launched in 1988 by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s government, has greatly helped in increasing the rate of literacy in the country. Besides the universalisation of primary education, steps were taken to promote adult literacy. (ANI)

Bihar CM uses a two-decade old helicopter

Patna, Sep 5 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is using a two-decade old helicopter amid fears over its airworthiness.

M K Singh, pilot of Bihar government’s Pawanhans helicopter has said that that Kumar’s chopper, bought in the year 1989-1990, was fit to fly.

“This helicopter was bought in the year 1989-1990 and had came in the same lot as Pawanhans helicopter. We are not facing any major problem. Small problems will be there even if you buy a brand new Boeing or an airbus. These technical problems will exist till the time one keeps on flying,” he added.

Singh also said that age of a chopper was not intrinsic to its airworthiness.

“If a plane is old, it does not mean that its condition is bad. All its components are to be changed on a regular basis. There is a periodic servicing, a major servicing and when the plane crosses certain age, then crack detection takes place, an ultrasound is being conducted. These days new systems are coming like CT scan, which can detect minor cracks,” he added.

Maoists attack private plant in Bihar, kidnap security guards

Patna, Sep 2 (ANI): About 400 armed Maoists attacked a plant owned by a private road construction firm and kidnapped six security guards on Wednesday in the Jamui district of Bihar.

The Jamui district comes under the Maoist affected areas of the state.

According to Additional Director General of Police Neelamani, the red ultras raided the SMPL’s plant at Hariondhi village and damaged pay loaders and three trucks.

Neelamani confirmed the kidnapping of six private security guards of the company by the Naxals.

The non-payment of ransom demanded by the Maoists from the private firm owner was said to be the reason behind the attack, Neelmani said

The Special Task Force (STF) And the District armed policemen had an encounter with the Maoists for some time after the incident, but they managed to escape into the thick forest area on Jamui-Chakai road, sources said. (ANI)

Junior doctors’ strike in Bihar, claims 38 lives

Patna, Aug 31(ANI): The outdoor and emergency services at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) continue to be affected for the fifth day on Monday due to an indefinite strike by 800-odd junior doctors.

According to reports, the doctors strike has so far claimed lives of 38 patients.

“Work at emergency and other wards of the Patna Medical College Hospital in Patna and Darbhanga Medical College Hospital at Darbhanga have been seriously hit by the strike,” a news channel quoted official sources, as saying.

Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said that the junior doctors should withdraw the strike as soon as possible.

“The timing of the strike is completely wrong and anti-people. It should have been amicably resolved, instead of resorting to a stir,” Kumar said.

The striking juniors are pressing for introduction of payscale system in place of existing stipend system, which they get in lieu of work while pursuing their postgraduate studies.

The juniors get Rs 13,000 per month as stipend in the first year and it goes up by Rs 1,000 in each of the remaining two years during which they complete the PG course. (ANI)

Nitish expresses confidence in BJP’s capability to handle its crisis

Patna, Aug.30 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday expressed confidence that Bharatiya Janata Party, which is presently faced with an internal crisis, is capable of solving its crisis.

“Leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party is capable of finding a solution to its crisis. There is nothing for us to say in the matter. Besides, this is an internal matter and they (BJP leaders) should solve it patiently. The newspapers are publishing more than the crisis in the Bharatiya Janata Party,” Kumar told reporters in Patna.

Nitish Kumar’s Jandal Dal (United) party is a member of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Meanwhile in New Delhi, Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat met Lal Krishna Advani on Sunday morning.

The developments came even as RSS Chief Mohan Bhawat met Advani at breakfast on Sunday morning to discuss current and emerging issues in the BJP.

After the meeting, senior RSS leader Madan Das Devi told a press conference on Sunday morning that he was confident about the BJP resolving its problems.

“We (RSS) are hopeful that the crisis in the BJP will be resolved. The RSS is assured that the BJP will overcome all problems,” Devi said.

“We all think that a large party such as the BJP has the capability of being given new direction and end its problems. Important BJP leaders met leaders of the RSS. Shri L.K.Advani and other senior BJP leaders met us. We discussed issues of national importance, party issues etc. They have assured us that the problems of the party will be resolved,” Devi added. Patients suffer as junior doctors strike in Patna continue

Patna, Aug 30 (ANI): Patients here are suffering as the Government and other hospitals in Patna are over crowded due to the junior doctors strike over pay hike.

A common sight at the Nalanda Medical College Hospital (NMCH) is of senior doctors attending patients lying on the floor since there are no vacant beds in the wards.

“We are under a lot of pressure. We are doing our best in treating as many patients as possible. We used to treat 40-50 patients a day. Now, we are seeing 90 patients a day. All the 40 emergency beds are occupied. Patients are now being admitted and even made to lie on the floor,” said Dr Rajendra Narayan Prasad, in-charge of emergency ward at the Nalanda Medical College Hospital.

“There were no arrangements at the PMCH.

The doctors are on strike and they asked us to take our patients somewhere else. Then we came here in the NMCH, but here it’s so crowded,” said Jetendra Kumar, relative of a patient.

Emergency, outpatient and surgery services are the worst hit by the junior doctors strike, which commenced on Thursday.

Hundreds of patients who could afford shifted to private nursing homes. But those who are poor will have to continue waiting for their turn in the already over crowded hospitals. (ANI)

Railway gangman killed by train robbers in Bihar

Patna, Aug 30 (ANI): A railway employee was killed and 10 others were injured when an armed gang looted cash and valuables from passengers of Jhajha-Patna local train in Bihar’s Jamui district on early Sunday.

The incident took place in the East Central Railway zone.

According to police sources, armed robbers boarded the train at Jamui and went on a looting spree.

The robbers snatched cellular phones, cash and other valuables worth around Rs 1 lakh from the passengers, police sources added.

The railway gangman, Mukesh Mandal, was shot at when he tried to resist looters near Mahesh Leta station.

Mandal, who sustained serious wounds, died on the way to a hospital at Jamui, sources said.

At least 10 passengers were wounded in a stampede, which was created due to the fire by the robbers.

The robbers managed to escape after pulling the chain of the train near Mahesh Leta station.

The Railway Police and the Bihar state Police are conducting search operation in the area for the robbers. (ANI)
