Keith Richards develops lemon passion after dumping vodka!

London, May 15 (ANI): ‘Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards has revealed his passion for citrus fruits.

The veteran rocker has grown a tree after planting pips from a lemon he bought in a supermarket.

Now, he disclosed on a US TV chat show that it has produced citrus fruit “bigger than grapefruits”, reports the Sun.

The star – who gave up his favourite tipple vodka when he quit booze at the start of the year – even germinated the tree””s flowers by hand.

“Somebody told me that in the winter, when the flowers come up, you””ve got to germinate them,” he told chat show host Jimmy Fallon.

“So I end up with a little paintbrush, going round every flower. I wanted John Belushi””s bee outfit.

“I had nothing else to do – so what do you do when you””ve got nothing to do?” he explained. (ANI

Blackberry ‘was first predicted 100 years ago’

London, May 4 (ANI): Blackberry, the leading smartphone device, had been predicted a century ago by an American physicist, it has been claimed.

Nikola Tesla made the prediction about the portable messaging service way back in 1909 in the Popular Mechanics magazine.

In the mag, he wrote that one day it would be possible to transmit wireless messages all over the world. He also predicted that the hand-held device would be simple to operate and one day, everyone in the world would communicate to friends using it.

The physicist believed that this would usher in a new era of technology.

The magazine’s technology editor, Seth Porges, unveiled Tesla’s prediction at a presentation to industry figures recently in New York. It was titled “108 years of futurism”.

The magazine, published in January 1902, has nine international editions and a readership of millions today, and has always tried to anticipate the world of technology in the future.

“Nikola Tesla was able to predict technology which is still in its nascent forms a hundred years later,” The Telegraph quoted Porges as saying.

“He talked a lot about his other great passion, which was wireless power.

“It has taken a little longer to get off the ground, but work on fascinating wireless conductive transmission is going on right now in research centres at MIT and Intel and other places,” Porges added. (ANI)

Prince Charles teams up with NBC for green campaign

Melbourne, April 29 (ANI): Britain’s Prince Charles has teamed up with NBC for ‘Green Is Universal’ campaign.

The Royal will offer up a heart-rending look at his work on climate change in Harmony, a feature-length program to be broadcast during NBC”s Green Week this November, reports News.com.au.

“The Prince of Wales has such a passion and vision in providing leadership on this crucial climate issue that confronts the world,” said Paul Telegdy, executive vice president of alternative programming at NBC.

“We are honored to partner with him to showcase these issues that are important to American audiences.”

In a clip from Harmony, the Prince said that many people never took the issue of climate change seriously and thought it was “pretty crazy” when he initiated the topic twenty-two years ago.

“I can only somehow imagine that I find myself being born into this position for a purpose,” he said.

“We have lost something very precious and that is an understanding of an inter-connectedness with nature. Just as mankind has the power to push the world to the brink, so too does he have the power to restore it,” he added. (ANI)

Ex-Kiwi cricketer Nathan Astle now hits the speedway

Auckland, Apr 24(ANI): Former New Zealand cricketer Nathan Astle will sit behind the wheel of a sprint car at Ellesmere Raceway, as he embarks on a new sporting direction – driving in a speedway series.

Astle has been a keen follower of track racing, and now that he has retired from all forms of cricket, he has decided to follow his passion.

“I’ve watched plenty of it and enjoyed it. When I was playing cricket I could not try it because of the risk factor, but I’m keen to have a go now,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Astle, as saying.

The 38-year-old said that though he will be a newcomer at the event, he wants to tangle with the best and race at Ruapuna next summer.

“I’m still reasonably competitive and hope eventually I can mix it with them, but for now I guess I’ll be at the back of the group while I get to grips with things,” Astle said.

Astle further said he backtracked on his intentions to make a career in coaching because he was against relocating for the purpose.

“I enjoyed my time with Burnside-West, but found it quite hard to get into coaching in Canterbury. If I wanted to get to a higher level of coaching I would probably have had to go elsewhere, but didn’t really want to relocate my family,” he added. (ANI)

Loved-up Brits prefer cuddle to sex!

More than half of British people in a relationship are more interested in a kiss and a cuddle on the sofa than passion between the sheets, a new research has shown.

The poll of 1,000 Britons, commissioned by healthcare giant Bayer, also showed it is men who are more than happy to smooch on a sofa rather than romp in the bedroom.

In the survey, sex was also judged to be less important to a successful relationship than commitment, companionship and a sense of humour.

Researchers of the study even blame the rise of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter for making people less intimate with each other.

The majority cited stress, tiredness and arguments as the main obstacles to intimacy with their partner.

“Lack of intimacy can endanger any relationship,” the Daily Express quoted Christine Webber, a sex and relationships expert, as saying.

Speeding minister fined for 149 kph drive

The Northern Territory’s Transport Minister says he was listening to a fast-paced Hoodoo Gurus song when he was caught speeding at almost 150 kilometres per hour.

Police detected Mr McCarthy speeding at 19 kph over the 130 kph speed limit between Tennant Creek and Alice Springs on Saturday.

Mr McCarthy released a statement admitting to and apologising for the traffic offence, for which he received a $200 fine and three demerit points.

But the Opposition’s John Elferink says that is not enough.

“It’s a chronically embarrassing thing for him,” he said.

“And of course it’s now up to [the Chief Minister Paul] Henderson to demonstrate whether or not he continues to have confidence in his own Transport Minister.”

Mr Elferink says Mr McCarthy has ignored his own previous warnings.

“Well, the minister’s made it difficult for himself because he is the one who has referred to the people who speed as idiots,” he said.

“He came into the Parliament in October last year and and lectured the Parliament at length in relation to the idiots who speed.”

Today, Mr McCarthy told the ABC: “I’ve been irresponsible and paid the price … I hold myself up as a bad example. I’ve made a mistake.”

He resisted calls to give up his role as Transport Minister.

“My response is that I will continue in the job, that I have a lot of passion for the job,” he said.

“I’ve made a very foolish mistake and a bad judgement and I need to be held accountable for that.

“I will pay my fine and I also have been issued with demerit points.

“This represents tough penalties.”

Ratten keeping emotions in check

Carlton coach Brett Ratten admits he has made the mistake of being swept up in the emotion of AFL blockbusters, as he seeks to reverse a winless record against Essendon.

The Blues boss said candidly on Wednesday he had focused too strongly in the past on the history and passion of playing the club’s biggest rivals and led his players down the same path.

The result against the Bombers has been losses in all five matches since Ratten took the job late in 2007.

His aim now is to ignore the hype and treat the big-drawing matches as simply another chance for four points – starting against Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night.

“Is it a bigger build-up (at Carlton) because it’s Essendon or Collingwood? No,” Ratten said.

“We’re going to keep it pretty simple and the way we go about it we won’t try and change too much.

“That’s something that maybe as a coach I got caught up in a little bit myself.

“So we’ll keep it on the straight and narrow or on the medium line, not just escalate your emotions, keep it in check and just make sure we focus on getting the job done.”

He said previously he had erred by mixing tactical instruction with history lessons before big games.

“Sometimes you look back on history and try and educate the players on what’s gone on in the past and maybe that’s been a bigger focus in the Essendon and Collingwood games compared to some of the other games,” he said.

“I think that’s something that this year I made a focus that I don’t want to do that – like, we’ve won the last two or we’ve lost the last two.

“This is at present, this team, the 22 that we can put out versus their 22.

“I know it sounds very simple but maybe then the emotion gets taken out and actually you’re thinking your way through, to make sure the players get the information that they do instead of worrying about is this a bigger build-up.

“The four points at round one versus the four points at round 22 are exactly the same.

“They are simple messages but I think maybe in the past I’ve looked and built these games up a little bit more myself.”

He also dismissed the notion that Carlton had a particularly difficult draw with games against Essendon, Adelaide away and Geelong to come in the next three weeks.

“It doesn’t change for us. It’s amazing – everyone says you’ve got a difficult draw but I’m just looking for the easy part of the draw, where does that come in this?” he said

“I think all the clubs – and how even the competition is – the draw’s very hard for everyone.”

Ratten said that the shape of both Essendon and Carlton had changed this year.

“This is 2010 and their personnel is extremely different from this year to last year – similar to ours, so I think we won’t worry about the past.”

Ratten pointed to Essendon’s loss of Matthew Lloyd, Scott Lucas and Andrew Lovett and Carlton’s departing players Brendan Fevola, Nick Stevens and Cameron Cloke.

Mercedes GP chief backs Schumacher despite flop comeback

London, Apr 1(ANI): Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has been given a vote of confidence by his Mercedes Grand Prix team chief Norbert Haug despite a nightmare start to his comeback.

Schumacher finished sixth and 10th in his first two races in Bahrain and Australia after three years out of the sport, and has also been outraced by team-mate Nico Rosberg.

However, Haug insisted: “Michael is as good as ever. He has got it still.”

“He could sit on his sofa saying, ”Nobody won more than I did” – but this is his passion. But he is a more relaxed guy than ever, he has fun, he is a very good team member, team player,” The Sun quoted Haug, as saying.

Haug further said that Schumacher is back in the F1 to be competitive, and reiterated his claims that Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was blocking the German in qualifying last Saturday.

“If you look at the times, if you look at qualifying, Michael was handicapped behind Alonso. It is fair to say it was a very comparable lap to Nico, who I think is one of the highest-rated guys of the current generation, with four years” experience,” Haug said.

“We have one of the strongest driver pairings in the field. It is up to us to improve the package further. It is fair to say we improved it on this track compared to Bahrain,” he added. (ANI)

Messenger banned from Parliament precinct for heckling

Queensland Health Minister Paul Lucas has criticised Opposition MP Rob Messenger for getting kicked out of State Parliament today, but also agreed to help his constituent.

While Mr Lucas was speaking about epilepsy awareness, Mr Messenger, the Member for Burnett, repeatedly interjected.

He says a doctor at the Bundaberg Hospital misdiagnosed a miscarriage and the woman should have private treatment.

“I will do anything to ensure that that couple are given enough medical care,” he said.

Mr Messenger was ejected and banned from the Parliamentary precinct for a week.

Mr Lucas says Mr Messenger did not make it to Question Time.

“His conduct excluded him from Parliament today denying him the opportunity to ask questions he saw as important to his electorate,” he said.

Mr Lucas says the woman will receive the best medical treatment including private care.

Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek says Mr Messenger was speaking on behalf of his constituents.

“Obviously Rob is very, very passionate about the issues that have affected Bundaberg in the past,” he said.

“We’re all aware of those and today once again with another issue in Bundaberg that he’s prosecuting, his passion came out again.”

Shoaib Malik to challenge PCB ban on every possible forum

Lahore, Mar.23 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik is in no mood to take the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision of imposing a year’s ban on him lightly and has decided to challenge the same.

Malik told reporters here that he would appeal against the PCB’s ban on every possible forum.

“I will fight against the ban and go to every possible platform to prove my innocence. I want to prove my innocence as there have been no cases of indiscipline in my 11-year career,” The Daily Times quoted Malik, as saying.

“Cricket is my passion and I live for it. I love cricket and cannot think of life without it,” he added.

Malik was banned for a year and slapped a hefty fine along with fast bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan following the recommendations of an inquiry committee, which was formed to look into Pakistan’s woeful performance in Australia.

The PCB had also banned former captains Mohammed Younis and Younis Khan for an indefinite period on the committee’s recommendation.

The senior players were found guilty of being involved in ‘infighting’ in the team and creating rifts among players. (ANI)

‘Bizarre requirements’ force boat ramp rethink

The Fraser Coast Council in southern Queensland says it could take several years and millions of dollars to carry out studies to build a new boat ramp at Burrum Heads.

The council has voted to investigate upgrading an existing ramp instead of building a new one after the State Government asked for an environmental impact statement (EIS) on the project.

The Burrum Heads Progress Association has been campaigning for a new ramp since 1994 and previously had the council’s support.

But councillor David Dalgleish says studies for the EIS could cost millions of dollars.

He says even if the council proceeded with the studies, the project would need an amendment to the Great Sandy Marine Park to go ahead.

“The State Government has given us a list of requirements, a bizarre list of requirements that is unheard of, but they obviously have a real passion to make sure this doesn’t go ahead,” he said.

“What it would have meant was the council could have spent in excess of $2 million doing studies and then it still would require an act of Parliament to go through.”

He says the council could not justify the expense.

“We can’t take the gamble of risking $2 million of ratepayers’ money on studies that may lead to nothing but a rubbish tin,” he said.

“So we now are back to the drawing board to try and find an alternative solution, which will be probably put some money into upgrading one the State Government’s poorly managed boat ramps that exist there now.”

Liam Neeson praised for filming ‘Chloe’ after wife Natasha Richardson’s death

New York, Mar 22 (ANI): Irish actor Liam Neeson has been praised for his efforts in continuing with the shooting of erotic thriller ‘Chloe’, after the passing away of his wife actress Natasha Richardson.

This time last year, Neeson, 57, was in the midst of shooting in Toronto when word came that his beloved wife, had suffered a skiing accident that eventually claimed her life.

Neeson, could not make it to the New York premiere of ‘Chloe’ on March 16, but director Atom Egoyan was there to attest to the valour Neeson showed by coming back to the set for four days after his wife’s death.

“We tried to protect him,” the New York Daily News quoted Egoyan as saying.

“No one knew when exactly he was coming back. But he was nothing less than heroic, especially considering the story,” he said.

The actor and Julianne Moore play a couple who rediscover their passion when she tries to tempt him into having an extramarital affair.

“Nobody forced him to come back. No one tried to talk to him about what happened. He’s an amazing man,” Amanda Seyfried, who played the “other woman”, added. (ANI)

‘Frustrated’ community demands rail return

About 1,200 people packed a community consultation session in Mildura last night, demanding the city’s passenger train service be restored.

The meeting was organised by consultants gathering information for the Victorian Government, which promised to return a passenger train when it was elected.

The meeting went for two-and-a-half hours and passed three motions, demanding the return of the train and criticising the consultation process.

However, the Department of Transport’s Sergio Lacchiana reassured those at the meeting the consultation process was in good faith.

“We have come here in force, we’re here to actually listen to all your feedback, so we are not taking this lightly,” he said.

“We’re not hiding, we’re here to listen to everything you have got to say, so that’s why we’re here.

“We need to have some clear understanding about what the community needs are.

“People’s travel patterns change over time. We need to make sure we have a clear understanding of what those travel patterns are, not what they were 10 years ago or 17 years ago.”

Consultants also met about 140 people during individual sessions during the day.

Waiting for 17 years

Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne says with a State election in November, commitments on the train need to come from both sides of politics.

“We’re not out to give either side a hard time … well we are, both sides, because we just want the train back from whichever side of the government is there at the time,” he said.

Councillor Milne says the meeting sent a clear message to consultants and the Government.

“I don’t think it got too heated, but there’s certainly a lot of passion out there amongst the people and I guess that really needs to come out,” he said.

“It’s been 17 years, people are really frustrated, nobody got right out of hand and they didn’t start swearing or yelling or screaming or abusing, but they were extremely passionate and I think that’s to be expected.”

Beveridge tells Wildcats to simply believe

Perth Wildcats coach Rob Beveridge says his side is still well placed to win a record fifth NBL championship despite losing game two of the grand final series to Wollongong.

The Wildcats went down 75-63 to the Hawks in Wollongong on Tuesday night to force a grand final decider in Perth on Friday night.

Beveridge says his team just needs to believe in itself and work hard on its perimeter shooting.

“We shot the ball very poor from the three-point line, it’s one of the worst performances we’ve had,” he said.

“A lot of them were open looks as well. I think we were second guessing ourselves and you can’t do that.

“You just have to believe in the work you’ve done and Friday night, if we get the same opportunity, we’ll definitely be taking it with a lot more authority and belief.”

Beveridge says the Wildcats’ home court advantage on Friday night could prove decisive and the Hawks should expect a hostile reception.

“We finished first, they finished second and right now most teams hold serve on their home court,” he said.

“We’ll be going back and we’ll be a lot more confident.

“I understand that it’s a passionate sport and they’re not feral here [in Wollongong], we’re not feral in Perth, it’s just the passion of the game.

“It’s going to happen on Friday night, they’re going to get exactly the same.”

Top white lie to shun sex: I’m too tired

London, Sept 16 (ANI): The humble headache has had its day as far as excuses to avoid sex are concerned, for now the reigning white lie to snub a romp is ‘I’m too tired’, says a new survey.

“I’ve got a headache” has lost its lustre and fallen to number three in the list behind “I’m not in the mood”.

Other white lies to make the top five included “I’ve got to get up early in the morning” and “I’m pre-occupied with work”.he conclusion was made after studying 4,000 adults.

The not-so-kinky research also revealed that one in five Brits regularly make excuses to avoid having sex.

Seven out of 10 said they were often too exhausted to enjoy sex. And four out of 10 said the recession had played havoc with their sex life, the study found, reports The Telegraph.

A spokesman for www.OnePoll.com, which carried out the study, said: “The humble headache has had its day as far as excuses are concerned.

“Tiredness plays a much bigger part in our reasons not to climb between the sheets these days and enjoy some quality time together.

“And its hardly surprising when we are all working longer hours than ever before and have so many things to worry about.

“Fears over whether will be able to pay our mortgages or even whether we will have a job in a month’s time are bound to affect our bedroom performance.

“It was intriguing to see just how the recession has affected our passion levels too.”

The report also found men are more likely to make excuses than women with 27 per cent admitting they often avoided sex compared to 18 per cent of women.

Liverpool combo of Torres and Gerrard can help beat Hungarian champions

London, Sep.16 (ANI): Liverpool hitman Fernando Torres believes that his partnership with Steven Gerrard is the double act every Reds fan reckons can fire them to glory in tonight’s Champions League tie with Hungarian champs Debreceni.

Torres sees England’s deadly duo as the biggest threat to his chances of notching a famous double in South Africa next year.

The Sun quoted Torres, as saying: “I have never played with a better player than Stevie – for me he really is the best in the world. If Rooney can get an understanding with him, that will make England one of the most dangerous attacking forces in the world.”

“When a nation wins a major tournament there are always two players who form a devastating understanding. You had Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, Del Piero and Totti and, most recently, the understanding I had with David Villa.

“That is the sort of class I know Stevie and Wayne can be in if they get that understanding.

“They are world class and have the attributes to complement each other very nicely.

“But, most importantly, they show passion when playing for their country and you can’t win a tournament without that.” (ANI)

Cancer-stricken Patrick Swayze dies at 57

Washington, Sept 15 (ANI): Veteran actor Patrick Swayze died of pancreatic cancer on Monday, aged 57.

The ‘Dirty Dancing’ star lost his battle to cancer after struggling for at least 20 months.

“Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” People magazine quoted Swayze’s representatives as saying in a statement.

Whoopi Goldberg, who starred with Swayze in one of his biggest movies ‘Ghost’, remembers Swayze as “funny man”.

“Patrick was a really good man, a funny man and one to whom I owe much that I can’t ever repay,” said Goldberg,

“I believe in Ghost’s message, so he’ll always be near,” she added.

“Patrick lived a hundred lifetimes in one,” said Rob Lowe, who appeared with Swayze in ‘The Outsiders and Youngblood’.

“I will remember him for that, and I will remember him for how much he loved his wife Lisa. He was such an intense actor, so full of passion and vigor. He definitely made the most out of it. It’s a sad day,” he added.

Swayze was diagnosed with advanced stage of pancreatic cancer in January last year.

However, he kept shooting for A and E series ‘The Beast’ while undergoing chemotherapy and never lost hope. (ANI)
