Labour looking for coalition as exit polls predict a hung parliament

London, May 7 (ANI): Britain might be heading for its first hung parliament in 36 years if exit poll predictions are to be gone by.

As the election counting begins in a closely contested general election, the Conservatives are struggling to obtain necessary battleground gains to claim power outright, despite some considerable swings.

Nevertheless, the Tories seemed optimistic about the election outcome believing that winds of change are sweeping through Britain with the Labour Party heading for a possible defeat for the first time in thirteen years.

The Sky News/BBC/ITN poll expects the Conservatives to win 305 seats, with Labour on 255 and the Lib Dems on 61.

According to Sky News, the result would see David Cameron”s party fall short of the 326 MPs needed for an overall majority by 21 seats.

Earlier, a Tory spokesman said the projected result was a “decisive rejection of Labour” and enough for the Conservatives to form a minority government.

After sweeping to victory in his Witney constituency, Mr Cameron said, “We have to wait for the full results, but it is clear the Labour government has lost its mandate to govern this country.”

But if the exit poll prediction is realised, it would present Labour with enough seats to align with Nick Clegg”s party to form an administration.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband told Sky News dismissed Tory claims to office and indicated that a Lib-Lab pact was likely.

“If no party has a majority in the House of Commons, no party has a moral right to a monopoly of power,” he said.

Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said early results were proof “people are not flying into the arms of the Tories”.

Meanwhile, the projected figure of 61 seats is a huge setback for the Lib Dems after such a buoyant election campaign.

Lib Dem Economics spokesperson Vince Cable deemed the exit poll a “strange result” amid disbelief from party activists.

Sky News business reports that the fluctuations of voting patterns have had a significant effect on the British markets with the pound registering a slight depreciation, in the minutes after the exit poll was published the pound slipped by around one cent against the dollar. (ANI)

Indian-origin Labour MP chosen for V K Krishna Menon Award

A leading Indian-origin Labour MP has been chosen for the V K Krishna Menon Award 2010, for his outstanding contribution towards political, social and economic advancement of the deprived sections of the British community.

Announcing the award, Dr Cyriac, Maprayil, Director of the London-based V K Krishna Menon Institute, said the award would be presented to Virendra Sharma later in the year who will also deliver The V K Krishna Menon Memorial Lecture.

Dr Maprayil said, “Sharma is one of the earliest labour party activists in this country with a consistent record of service to the labour party and to the Asian Community.

“His large majority at the polls speaks for itself and the high esteem and respect in which he is held by his constituents. He has brought dignity and self-respect to politics condemning opportunism, cynicism and self enrichment of many politicians at a time when we were beginning to lose faith in politics.

“Sharma is an admirer of the great V K Krishna Menon which is perfectly understandable because he is like Menon, who loved India and from his youth was involved in the liberation-struggle on two fronts first the independence of his country and then liberation of his people from racism in Britain.”

Sharma who was born in India arrived in the UK in 1968.

He has served as a councillor in Ealing for 25 years. He studied at the prestigious London School of Economics on a trade union scholarship and subsequently worked as a day services manager for people with learning disabilities in Hillingdon.

Sharma was elected as MP in the Earling Southall by-election in July 2007.

The V K Krishna Menon Institute was launched in early 2006 to celebrate and commemorate the life, times and achievements of a prodigiously talented statesman, Indian government minister and a pioneering London councillor.

Menon founded the India League, the unofficial embassy of British-India in London, which became a powerful force in the overseas movement to help liberate India.

One of the Institute’s objectives is to confer awards on outstanding Indian patriots, who have served in the Diaspora and also distinguished themselves in various fields including science, literature, economics, politics and diplomacy.

Wealthy and hardline, they make sure it’s no Tea Party for Obama

Tea Party activists rallied in the capital they love to hate on Thursday, carrying signs that read “Don’t Tread on Me” and “Follow the Constitution”. The close of their spirited cross-country tour fell on tax day, a dark marker for the conservative anti-tax movement.

Serenaded by patriotic songs, the protesters streamed to Washington’s Freedom Plaza to hear exhortations against the political order. The slogans were biting, sometimes raw: “We Want Regime Change”, “Save a Seal, Club a Liberal”, “Down with the Govt Takeover”, “End the Fed” and “Waterboard Bernanke”. Some American flags waved upside down in the breeze.

The movement opened its tour three weeks ago with a Nevada rally that drew 9,000 and heard from Sarah Palin.

According to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, Tea Party supporters are wealthier and better educated than the general public, and are no more or less afraid of falling into a lower socio-economic class. The 18 per cent of Americans who call themselves Tea Party supporters tend to be Republican, White, male, married and older than 45.

They are likely to describe themselves as “very conservative” and Obama as “very liberal”. While most Republicans say they are “dissatisfied” with Washington, Tea Party supporters are more likely to classify themselves as “angry”.

The Tea Party movement burst onto the scene a year ago in protest of the economic stimulus package, and its supporters have vowed to block the Democratic agenda on the economy, the environment and healthcare.

Asked what they are angry about, Tea Party supporters offered three main concerns: the recent healthcare overhaul, government spending and a feeling that their opinions are not represented in Washington.

Factbox: Lawmakers facing heat over healthcare

(Reuters) – With President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul now the law of the land, lawmakers from both parties have left Washington for a two-week spring recess, where they will face constituents for the first time since its passage.

Barack Obama | Healthcare Reform

Here are a few members of Congress who are considered vulnerable in November elections and could face pressure in their home districts over their vote on the bill.

* SENATE MAJORITY LEADER HARRY REID

The Nevada Democrat, who spent a year championing the healthcare bill and faces a tough fight for reelection to a fifth term, returned home in the midst of a conservative Tea Party activists rally aimed at drumming him out of office.

In Nevada, a firmly red state where Obama’s healthcare revamp has been unpopular, Reid has not scheduled any events to discuss the bill, although his staff says he’s not avoiding the topic and that it has come up in other forums.

* REPRESENTATIVE BART STUPAK

Stupak led a coalition of anti-abortion Democrats who threatened to kill healthcare reform until party leaders agreed that Obama would issue an executive order that the bill would not alter current law preventing federal funding for abortion.

Back home in Michigan, Stupak, who is running for re-election in 2010, has come under fire for his change of heart. He has issued a statement calling Obama’s executive order an “ironclad commitment” but has not scheduled any events to discuss the bill.

* SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN

The Republican who lost to Obama in the 2008 presidential race voted against the healthcare initiative and, facing potentially the stiffest re-election challenge of his long career in the Senate, returned to Arizona, his vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin at his side, vowing to repeal it.

* REPRESENTATIVE JOHN BOCCIERI

The first-term Ohio Democrat is considered vulnerable as he runs for reelection and may be hedging his bets on health care. On two occasions has said that “it was a choice of voting for a bad bill or making no change.”

And in a recent release Boccieri said: “The bill may not be perfect but it strikes the proper balance.”

BJP demands Bandra-Worli Sea Link accessible to pedestrians

Mumbai, July 14 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party activists staged a demonstration here demanding that the recently opened Bandra-Worli Sea Link should be accessible to pedestrians.

Ten years and 325 million dollars later, the ambitious sea bridge aimed at easing Mumbai’s notorious traffic jams, opened on June 30, holding out hope for harried commuters.

BJP protestors, led by the state deputy Sardar Tara Singh from Mulund assembly constituency, demanded for a lane for cyclists and pedestrians.

“I demand from the government that a small track for pedestrians along the sea link be constructed so that the common man and the poor people, who do not own cars, can also cross the bridge,” Singh said.

The protestors were briefly detained by the police.

The 5.6 km-long Bandra-Worli Sea Link, handles nearly 100,000 vehicles daily, helping wealthier residents skip nearly two dozen traffic lights and cut more than half an hour in the commute to the business hub in the south. (ANI)

Shiv Sena wants houses in Mumbai for only for locals

Mumbai, July 14 (ANI): In turf battle ahead of state polls in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena has promised houses in Mumbai to state’s bona-fide residents.

Having lost ground to its faction, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, over hardline political posturing, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray led a bunch of party activists and supporters to the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) head office demanding that non-Maharashtrians should be barred in that allotment of shelters.

“In another two to three months, Shiv Sena is confident of coming to power and then our government will provide 500 square feet area houses to Marathi ‘manoos’ (bona-fide residents of Maharashtra) to ensure that they need not go out of Mumbai to reside.

Marathi manoos is entitled to shelter and none else. This is our stand,” said Thackeray.

“In Mumbai, the houses are built by the MMRDA for the poor. These houses are also grabbed by builders. Immigrants from Bihar and Bangladesh are begging for accommodation whereas what we are demanding is proper accommodation from government which is our right,” he added.

The MMRDA last month announced that it would provide 43,000 homes at a rent starting as low as Rupees 800 per month.

The project is aimed at reducing the number of slums in Mumbai.

Shiv Sena members feel that the housing scheme doesn’t give preference to Maharashtrians and would encourage outsiders to settle in Mumbai.

Maharashtra will hold elections to state assembly by October and the migrants’ issue could swing votes. (ANI)

Students wish ongoing security operation in Lalgarh to finish soon

Lalgarh/Kolkata, June 25 (ANI): While security forces are carrying out operation in the Maoist infested area Lalgarh in West Bengal to free it from criminals’ grip, local students lament that their studies are getting affected.

A section of students complains that studies are getting affected due to the ongoing operation by the security forces in the jungles of Lalgarh region in Medinipur district of West Bengal.

Security forces, who are taking on the armed Maoists in the region, are using school buildings and campus as camps, as a result, the students cannot attend their school buildings.

Certain examinations, scheduled to take place in the month of May and June, have been cancelled by authorities due to the ongoing security operations.

“Because of the ongoing conflict, the police have set up camps in this area for the past seven to eight days in different schools. In Satpati too they have come today to set up camp. Today, the schools were supposed to begin after summer vacations but couldn’t. Admissions were to take place and even exams but because of the conflict all these planned schedules stand cancelled,” said Nirodhban Nandi, a student.

Local villagers fear that the ongoing conflict between the security forces and the Maoists may last longer than expected until security forces manage to flush out the Maoists from the region.

The state police and para-military personnel recently started the combing operation to flush out Maoists from Lalgarh, after the ultras in the guise of supporting the People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), torched a police station and offices of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and killed several of the party activists. Rahul Gandhi’s birthday celebrated across Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow/Kanpur/Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh), June 19 (ANI): Large number of supporters and activists of Congress party celebrated the 39th birthday of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in different parts of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

The Congress party decided to celebrate Rahul Gandhi’s birthday as ‘Samrasta Divas’ (Harmony Day).

Born on June 19, 1970, Rahul Gandhi is a Member of Parliament from Amethi constituency in the state.

Though Rahul was in Lodon, his absence did not seem to deter his admirers in Uttar Pradesh, the state he represents in the 15th Lok Sabha.

In Lucknow, after holding a two-wheeler rally , the Congress party workers hosted a lunch for the ‘have-nots’ from a downtown locality of the city.

In Allahabad, the party activists danced with utmost excitement to the beats of drums to hail the birthday of their young leader of the state.

In Kanpur, the congress supporters did not lag behind as was evident in Jajmau locality of the city where cakes were cut and distributed to mark his birthday.

The Kanpur City Congress Committee chose Jajmau for the occasion as Rahul Gandhi visited the place in September last year.

The Congress Committee also distributed cash, gifts and sweets to the people whom Gandhi had met during his visit.

“I will do what ever I can for him (Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary of Congress party). I got money and clothes as gifts,” said Lali, a resident of Jajmau, Kanpur visited by Rahul Gandhi.

Political analysts have termed Rahul Gandhi being instrumental in the emergence of Congress as the single largest party in the recently concluded general polls.

His tactical moves were based on grassroots activism, building deep connections to rural India and trying to democratise the hierarchical Congress party itself.

Rahul turned down a cabinet post in the Manmohan Singh Government and is concentrating on strengthening the party at the grassroots.

Meanwhile Mayawati, chief of northern Uttar Pradesh, whose Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is reportedly observing Rahul Gandhi’s birthday as the day of shame, hit out at the opposition political parties.

She blamed all the opposition parties of uniting in recently concluded general polls and ensuring that a daughter of low-caste should not become the prime minister.

“All the parties united against the candidate of the Bahujan Samaj Party ensuring that a daughter of low-caste should not become Prime Minister of the country,” said Mayawati while addressing a public rally in Lucknow.

Congress party bagged 21 seats while Mayawati’s BSP could only manage 20 of the total 80 seats in the general polls in the state. (ANI)

Meanwhile, Pranab Mukherjee, a senior leader of the Congress, which is in pre-poll alliance with the Trinamool Congress, rapped the Communists for dreaming to form a government at the Centre. He said it would take them another 250 years to realize their dream.

“In 1952, the CPI (M) got 15 seats and that after increasing reached 60 in 2004. Now you can calculate how long they will take to reach 272. After that they should think to form a government. After another 250 years, they should think of that,” Mukherjee said.

The Congress has tied up with the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. The Communists are expected to face a tough fight after they angered many of its traditional rural voters over a land acquisition drive for industry. (ANI)

Azam Khan fires another salvo at Amar Singh

Rampur (Uttar Pradesh) April 10 (IANS) The bitter war between Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh and veteran leader Mohammed Azam Khan rages on in the run-up to the elections and shows no signs of ending soon.

Samajwadi Party national general secretary Azam Khan has asked Muslims to remain vigilant and foil the ‘conspiracies’ being hatched to divide the community.

‘Another national general secretary (Amar Singh), accompanying actor Sanjay Dutt in the course of his election tour, misguided Subhani Mian, leader of the Barielvi sect by alleging that Azam Khan was faithful to the Deobandi sect. This is a dangerous conspiracy to create a gulf between two sects of Muslims,’ Azam Khan said in a statement issued here Thursday evening.

He said the nomination of Maulana Khalil Athar Ashrafi and Maulana Yasin Usmani as presidents of the State Arabic Persian Board and the Urdu Academy respectively during the party’s rule was enough to prove his sincerity and intentions to keep the community and the two sects together.

He said if community members refrained from responding forcefully to these ‘conspirators’, the party will not have a single Muslim leader to raise voice against Kalyan Singh, a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader with whom the Samajwadi Party has arrived at an understanding, and others.

While Amar Singh is backing actress-turned-politician Jaya Prada as the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Rampur, Azam Khan and his followers are opposed to her candidature and have been campaigning against her.

A group of Samajwadi Party activists have been supporting Azam Khan’s demand to shift Jaya Prada from Rampur and field a non-Muslim, non-actor and a male candidate, said Azam Khan’s aide Mohammed Mustafa.

Samajwadi Party activists allegedly dole out money to voters in Mumbai

Mumbai, Apr 7 (ANI): Samajwadi Party activists allegedly distributed money to prospective voters in Mumbai.

There were allegations that Shahid Azmi, brother of Abu Asim Azmi reportedly doled out money during the procession. However, Azmi refuted these allegations.

“I don’t know anything. Money can’t be distributed. There is no question of distributing money,” said Abu Asim Azmi, a candidate of Samajwadi Party from Mumbai North West constituency.

In another twist, party general secretary Amar Singh said that he had been threatened by some aide of underworld gangster Chota Rajan and asked not to support Abu Azmi.

“Some Ratnesh Singh called me from unidentified number and said there is a message from ‘Nana’ that you and your colleagues won’t help Abu Azmi. If you help, you will go against ‘Guru Bhai’. It won’t be good for you. In turn, I questioned since when did Nana Patekar come to politics and Nana Patekar knows me and he can talk directly to me. He said you don’t know ‘Nana’. ‘Nana’ means Chota Rajan,” said Amar Singh.

Amar Singh demanded security for himself, Azmi, Jaya Bachchan and actor Sanjay Dutt.

Maharashtra Chief Minister’s office sources confirmed that Amar Singh had called up Chavan regarding the threat call. (ANI)

Sanjay Dutt vows to make Lucknow a progressive City

Lucknow, Mar 15 (ANI): Bollywood actor and Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate from Lucknow Sanjay Dutt on Sunday delivered his first political speech and promised to work for the betterment of the city.

“I am with you. We will work together for the progress of Lucknow,” Dutt said while addressing a large gathering of party activists and his fans here.

Dutt also said he would dedicate himself for the party as it was now like a family to him.

“Amar Singh and Mulaym Singh Yadav told me that the day you wear the red cap you will be a member of our family. I feel like I am now part of the family. I want to say that I will take stick blows with you and even bullets. We will fight elections together,” Dutt said pointing to his red cap.

However, Dutt’s nomination hinges on the Election Commission’s decision, since he has been convicted to a jail term of six years in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.

Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh, who was also present on the occasion, mentioned the actor’s famous’ Gandhigiri in the movie ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’.

Pak critics says new Islamic law in Swat Valley will encourage insurgents

Peshawar, Feb.17 (ANI): Pakistani critics of the NWFP Government-Pakistan Taliban deal to introduce a new sharia law in the Swat Valley, have claimed that this a dangerous concession to extremist insurgents who have terrified inhabitants of the valley for months.

According to a report in the Washington Post, the bombing of girls’ schools, beheading of policemen, whipping criminals in public squares and assassinating Awami National Party activists is not acceptable to many of these critics.

They fear that this deal might spur the insurgents to push harder for the imposition of Islamic law in other areas, taking advantage of a promise by the Pakistani army to pull back from the surrounding area if peace is restored.

The Pakistan Government, on the other hand, is desperate to restore peace to a Taliban-infested valley once known as the “Switzerland of Pakistan,”.

In announcing the agreement, Pakistani officials asserted that the adoption of Sharia law would bring swift and fair justice to the Swat Valley, where people have long complained of legal corruption and delays. They said the new system would have “nothing in common” with the draconian rule of the Taliban militia that ran Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, during which thieves’ hands were amputated and adulterers were stoned to death.

Militant leaders in the scenic Swat Valley, in a gesture of good faith, said they would observe a 10-day cease-fire while the new system is implemented. The Pakistani army said it would suspend operations in the area, and there were anecdotal reports of celebratory gunfire and crowds returning to once-deserted streets.

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the new Sharia law plan for Malakand Agency, the large district in the North-West Frontier Province that includes Swat, after some initial hesitation and wording changes.

Leaders of the Awami National Party here said they also supported the agreement even though their own views are more secular and they have been targeted by insurgent attacks.

They said the government does not have sufficient force to defeat the Taliban and foreign fighters based in the autonomous tribal areas along the Afghan border.

So, they said, it needs to negotiate with local militant groups in nearby areas like Swat to isolate the renegade hardliners in the tribal sanctuaries. (ANI)

Pramod Muthalik justifies pub action, says will carry on protest peacefully

Mangalore, Feb 5 (ANI): Pramod Muthalik, the Chief of the Sri Rama Sena, has said that the raid on a Mangalore pub was justified, as it was aimed at protecting youngsters from falling into wrong hands.

“Our aim is not create violence. We raided a pub, but nobody understands that there is a drug mafia and sex mafia working in the area and lot of females are becoming victims of that. I agree that our way to protest was not right. I will tell my party activists to rather carry their protest in a peaceful manner,” said Muthalik.

He said that his forum would submit a memorandum to the State authorities to stop all preparedness for the Valentine’s Day.

“A team of the party members will meet the Governor, State chief and the Home (interior) Minister and would give a memorandum asking to stop any celebrations on Valentine’s Day. We are also requesting the police and also all college campus to stop celebrations for the Valentine’s Day,” he added.

It may be recalled that activists of Sri Ram Sena had raided a pub here on January 25 and beat up four women who were present there.

The enraged activists of Sri Rama Sena had barged into the lounge bar ‘Amnesia’, abused the owner and customers and beat up the women, even as they tried to run to safety. uthalik, who was arrested, later released on bail.

The police have charged the arrested persons of Sri Ram Sena for acts of criminal assault, intimidation, outrage of modesty of women and criminal trespass. (ANI)
