Courtney Love wants to revive her acting career

London, May 21 (ANI): Courtney Love is looking to return to the big screen, as she wants to renew her acting career.

The rocker has acted in a few Hollywood films like 200 Cigarettes and Man on the Moon, and has even received nomination for Best Actress Golden Globe for her performance in The People vs. Larry Flynt.

Love, who has been away from Hollywood for a while now, recently released her fourth Hole album, but has now, expressed a wish to return to movies.

“When I first started acting I passed on The Matrix, on L.A. Confidential. I passed on a lot of stuff because I really wasn”t ready to pass on the rock thing. I”m still not ready to give that up but I”d like to do the acting part-time,” The Daily Star quoted her as telling Kerrang! Magazine. (ANI)

Wildcats swoop on Tovey

The Perth Wildcats have signed former Sydney and Townsville forward Cameron Tovey for the next two NBL seasons.

Tovey, who started his career at the Cats, joins Shawn Redhage, Kevin Lisch, Jesse Wagstaff, Brad Robbins, Damian Martin, Drew Williamson, Stephen Weigh and Matt Knight as players confirmed for next season.

Perth now needs only to sign an under-24 development player to complete its roster.

Tovey had reportedly quit the NBL earlier this month for a career in accounting but the talented forward said that was never the case.

He will work part-time while juggling his basketball duties.

Lady luck, poor bowling choices by Afridi behind big Australia loss: Mudassar

Lahore, May 4 (ANI): Former Pakistan opener Mudassar Nazar while criticising skipper Shahid Afridi for making some wrong moves against Australia during their encounter in the ICC T20 World Championship, has said that lady luck also did not favour the captain.

“In the match against Australia, I think Afridi did not have any luck with all the decisions he took,” Mudassar said.

He however blasted Afridi for opting to open the bowling with part time spinner Mohammed Hafeez and giving a three over spell to fast bowler Mohammed Aamer.

Mudassar said Aamer is a kind of bowler who is more effective in the dying stages of the game.

“If Aamer is believed to be good in opening the spell, he is more lethal bowling the last few overs because of his angle and reverse swinging yorkers, which he amply demonstrated in the last over,” The Nation quoted Mudassar, as saying.

Aamer gave 23 runs without any success in the first three overs of his spell in the match, which the defending champions lost by 34 runs, but in the last over of his quota he grabbed three quick wickets.

The eventful last over of the Australian innings produced five wickets, including two run outs.

Mudassar pointed out that the batting and fielding remains the area of prime concern for Pakistan, adding that Afridi’s own bad patch with the bat was also a cause of worry.

“Afridi’s poor form is alarming even for himself. But I believe he is good enough to recover and would surely make a difference in the next games,” he said. (ANI)

Australia ready to replicate season’s success in T20 World Cup: Clarke

Sydney, Apr 24(ANI): Australian Twenty20 skipper Michael Clarke has said his squad is ready to replicate the national team’s successful season so far and win the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.

“I think our form over the last 12 months has been very good, very exciting. We have a specialist Twenty20 squad now,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Clarke, as saying.

“There are no guarantees in this game, but with the talent we have in this squad I don’t see any reason why we can’t be as successful as we have been in one-day and Test cricket,” he added.

Clarke further believes the team is balanced enough to adapt to the challenging conditions in the Caribbean.

“Our squad is very adaptable not just with the ball, but with the bat as well,” Clarke said.

“We’ve got two spinners in our squad, a couple of part-time spinners, two all-rounders and four very good fast bowlers,” he added.

The 29-year-old, who is relatively inexperienced in the shortest version of the game, said he has been trying to gather suggestions to be a successful captain in the Twenty20s.

“I’ve had a lot of conversations with guys who have been playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and I’ve got a lot of advice from those guys as well,” he added. (ANI)

‘Clare’s back’: Ex-Chief Minister returns

Charles Darwin University’s vice-chancellor says the former Labor Chief Minister Clare Martin is returning to the Northern Territory to take up a position at the University.

Clare Martin led Labor to its first electoral win in the Northern Territory in 2001 and was Chief Minister until 2007.

She has been based in Sydney for the past two years in the role of chief executive of the Australian Council of Social Service.

Vice Chancellor Barney Glover says Ms Martin is returning to serve as a professional fellow at the new Public and Social Policy Research Institute.

The ABC understands her role will include fostering relationships to develop strategic partnerships and identifying potential research opportunities.

Professor Glover says it will be a part-time role.

“Clare’s coming back, we are very excited about it,” Prof Glover said.

“It is a substantial part-time position at the moment because Clare has other interests at the moment that Clare has other interests as well that she wants to pursue both in the Northern Territory and nationally.

“It is a role that for us includes some research activity that Clare is very keen to get into to follow on from the work that she has been doing in the social justice and social services area.”

She will take up the position at Charles Darwin University in early August.

Wendy Morton from the NT Council of Social Services says she hopes Clare Martin will be able to fight for welfare reforms in the new role.

“It is certainly a loss for ACOSS and for NTCOSS to have Clare leave the sector, but I hope she will take all that experience that she has gained working for the sector into her new role,” Ms Morton said.

Sydney magistrate allows Indian cabbie accused of ‘kidnapping’ five female passengers to visit mum

Sydney, Apr.7 (ANI): A Gold Coast magistrate has suspended police reporting conditions for an Indian cabbie charged with kidnapping five female passengers so he can return home to visit his mum.

According to The Courier Mail, suspended Gold Coast Cabs driver Karan Luthra allegedly refused to let the frightened women out of his taxi after they disputed the fare and instead took them on a wild 25-minute ride through Surfers Paradise.

Southport magistrate Terry Duroux today overruled police objections and gave the 24-year-old permission to fly back to India to see his mother and attend his sister’s wedding.

But he imposed a 5000-dollar surety to prevent the university student and part-time cab driver from doing a ‘runner’.

Luthra was charged with five counts of deprivation of liberty over the March 13 incident.

Applying for the bail relaxation, defence solicitor Katie Chan said Luthra wanted to return home to India to visit his depressed mother and go to the wedding.

Police prosecutor Brian Cazzulino strongly opposed the move, saying it was not as if Luthra’s mother was dying. (ANI)

Malaysian model not to be canned for drinking beer

London, Apr. 1 (ANI): In a dramatic turnaround of the ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ case, the part-time Malaysian model won’t be caned anymore, as the Sultan of Penang has decided to spare her.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, a mother of two, received a letter from the Pahang state Islamic department informing her of the sultan’s decision.

“As a substitution for the caning, the sultan has ordered Kartika to perform community service for three weeks,” The Telegraph quoted her lawyer Adham Jamalullail, as saying.

Sultan Ahmad Shah is the guardian of Islam in Penang.

Most of Malaysia”s 13 states are ruled by sultans, who usually play a ceremonial role in governance but have the power to rule in Islamic matters, the paper says.

The order is likely to cool down a fiery debate over whether Sharia laws should intrude into people”s private lives in Malaysia.

Kartika”s father Shukarnor Abdul Muttalib said she has been told to report to the Islamic department on Friday.

“We will abide by the order … Kartika will go on with her life,” he said.

On July 20, last year, the court ordered her to be caned six times and fined 5,000 after she was caught drinking at a hotel in Cherating on July 11, 2008.

Kartika paid the fine, but the caning has yet to be carried out. (ANI)

Jeparit residents demand more police

Residents in a Wimmera town have turned out to a public meeting complaining about a lack of police.

Jeparit’s current police officer has been on WorkCover for 18 months and the position has been filled part-time by officers from Nhill and Dimboola.

About 40 residents attended the meeting on Thursday night after reports it had taken police up to two hours to respond to callouts in some cases.

The Hindmarsh Shire chief executive, Dean Miller, says residents welcomed assurances by senior police that there will be a new officer in the station by mid-May.

“I guess there was general agreement at the meeting that there was a recognition this problem isn’t just isolated to Jeparit but it’s a state-wide problem and it’s due to a lack of resources across the state,” he said.

Indian Tantric tries killing sceptic live on TV, fails

London, March 20 (ANI): A sceptic challenged an Indian tantric to kill him live on television, after the guru proclaimed that he could kill another man using only his mystical powers.

Sanal Edamaruku, self-appointed sceptic-in-chief of Indian Rationalists’ Association, demanded Pandit Surender Sharma to exterminate him.

Both men were invited to a talk show for the challenge.

The episode was banned from being screened on television, but could be viewed on Youtube.

Sharma was reluctant to start with but he finally obliged to perform his rituals.

He brandished a knife, ruffled the sceptic’s hair and pressed his temples.

However, even hours later, Edamaruku was alive and smiling.

“He was over, finished, completely destroyed!” The Times quoted him as saying.

He added: “The immediate goal I have is to stop these fraudulent babas and gurus. I want people to make their own decisions. They should not be guided by ignorance, but by knowledge.

“I’d like to see a post-religious society — that would be an ideal dream, but I don’t know how long it would take.”

Edamaruku is also part-time journalist and publisher from the southern state of Kerala.

The Indian Rationalist Association was founded officially in Madras in 1949. (ANI)

Brit teen golfer defies 67,000,000-1 odds with double ace in same round

London, Mar 19(ANI): Teenage British golfer Jamie Brittain has defied odds estimated at up to 67,000,000-1 to ace two holes-in-one during the same round at Shropshire’s Wrekin Golf Club.

Brittain notched up his aces on both the 12th and 17th holes, described by officials at the 600-member club as “very, very unusual”.

The 19-year-old amateur golfer, who works part-time at another course, said his remarkable feat, witnessed by a workmate, was missed by his grandfather, who had retired to the clubhouse part-way round the course.

“It was quite a weird feeling when it happened on the 12th and then for it to happen again on the 17th was just unbelievable,” The Telegraph quoted Brittain, as saying.

Meanwhile, Wrekin”s club captain, Peter Buchanan, was equally surprised over the achievement, and said: “Jamie”s a great golfer – it”s a very rare occurrence and we are extremely proud.” (ANI)

TAFE denies teacher shortage

TAFE Western, in western New South Wales, says it is not experiencing a teacher shortage, despite advertising new positions.

The acting director of TAFE Western, Kate Baxter, says it is looking for new teachers as a pre-emptive measure in case there is an increase in enrolments later in the year.

Ms Baxter says it is looking for people with teaching qualifications, along with relevant industry skills or knowledge to teach.

She says the Broken Hill campus is looking for casual and part-time teachers.

“We normally run a recruitment campaign twice a year but this year we’ve had a strong start to enrolments and so we’re very keen to make sure as many people in the community who might be skilled to become TAFE teachers know that we are looking and then they might pursue that opportunity,” she said.

Debt-ridden Duchess of York Fergie in line to join Loose Women

London, September 13 (ANI): Debt-ridden Duchess of York Sarah, 49, may soon bag a presenter’s job on the hit lunchtime chat show ‘Loose Women’.

After her guest appearance on the programme earlier this month, Sarah is now desperate to have a permanent seat at the table anongside motormouths like Carol McGiffin and Denise Welch.

Fergie, as she is popularly known, is even said to have begged ITV1 bosses for the job.

“Sarah loved it so much that afterwards she asked to be a panellist,” the News of the World quoted part-time anchor Andrea McLean, 39, as saying.

“We would all jump at the chance. She would be absolutely ideal. We’d love to have her,” McLean added.

Sued by three firms over nearly 25,000 pounds in unpaid bills, Sarah can make up to 50,000 pounds a year if she gets a regular spot on the show.

An ITV1 insider said: “Fergie has a lot of interesting things to say and would be great for Loose Women.” (ANI)

Malaysian Home Minister clears sentence of whip-for-beer-drinking model

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 6 (ANI): Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has “cleared” the Prisons Department to cane part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who is being sentenced for drinking beer.

Last week, department director-general Zulkifli Omar and a woman officer came to Home Minister’s office to demonstrate the caning sentence.

“She tapped the back of a chair with the cane. There was little force involved and it was not going to inflict pain, not even like the caning carried out in schools in those days.

“I am now satisfied that the caning can be carried out by the department if the court decides to proceed and enforce the sentence,” the Star Online quoted him, as saying.

Hishammuddin said that although he was now satisfied that the department was able to conduct the caning, he still felt it had no experience to do so.

“This is because the woman (Kartika) will be the first to be caned. Four men who have received caning sentences by the Syariah Court are appealing their sentences,” he said.

“That is not their purview. It is the judicial process which decides that. If the caning sentence is to be imposed, it is their duty to carry it out fairly,” he added.

Kartika, a 32-year-old mother-of-two, was fined 5,000 ringgits and ordered to be whipped six times for drinking beer in a hotel in Cherating last year.

Her sentence has been deferred until after Ramadan.

Several parties, such as the Bar Council, have called for the sentence to be annulled.

Kartika’s father, Shukarno Mutalib, when contacted, said the family was happy to hear that the department was able to handle the caning.

“Alhamdullillah. Kartika wants it over and done with,” he said. (ANI)

Former Malaysian PM says ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ model’s sentence ‘too harsh’

Petaling Jaya (Malaysia), Aug. 26 (ANI): Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad has expressed concern over the whipping sentence given to part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for drinking beer, saying the punishment is “too harsh.”

Dr. Mohammad questioned the fairness of the harsh decision in his blog post, asking if Islam didn’t allow mercy for first time offenders, The Star reports.

“Is not Islam merciful to first-time offenders?” Dr Mahathir asked, adding that fairness and consideration were the main tenets in Islam.

“We will be celebrating our independence this year by flogging a Muslim woman for drinking beer under Syariah law,” he added.

“Although the story has gone across the globe, Muslims should not worry about other people’s perceptions when dealing with matters of our religion despite the negative or positive image it might bring,” he noted. (ANI)

Brit Mayor accused of breaking into women’s homes, wearing their undies

London, Aug 25 (ANI): A Brit Mayor, accused of breaking into women’s homes and wearing their undies, has resigned from his post.

Bachelor Ian Stafford, 58, who had been elected Mayor of Preesall and Knott End, Lancs, four years ago, resigned as a councillor immediately after his arrest on August 24, with charges of three counts of burglary.

This came to light after women reported to the police that their bras and knickers had vanished.

When cops examined footage from a camera a worried woman had secretly installed in her bedroom, they saw a semi-naked man going through the her drawers, and then putting on her knickers before performing a sex act.

“This will come as a surprise to anyone who knows him,” the Sun quoted Jill Marr, 63, who worked with him as a Mayoress, as saying.

“I always thought of him as a very quiet man who was a regular church-goer and very popular in the village.

“He was always extremely courteous and polite to me,” she said.

Her husband, town clerk Lionel Marr, said that Stafford sounded “upset”, as he offered his resignation.

Police said that part-time handyman and gardener Stafford, of Preesall, would appear in court next month. (ANI)

Aussie batsman North confident of chasing down a record 546

London, Aug 23(ANI): Australian cricketer Marcus North, who took four wickets with his part time off-spinners on the low turning pitch in England’s second innings of the final Ashes Test at The Oval, has said that his team might be able to chase down a record 546.

“History is against us. It’s too early to look that far ahead. There is still a lot of cricket to be played,” The Daily Telegraph quoted North, as saying. What you’ll see are 11 guys, who have got a lot of character to show, who are going to give everything for every contest for every over. Hopefully, that can lay the foundation to give us a chance,” he added.

North said that if past second innings scores are taken into consideration, Australia has a good chance to retain the Ashes. At Lord’s Australia scored 406 before losing and in the rain-ruined match at Edgbaston they had scored 5-375 to save the game.

“Our first objective was to get through tonight unscathed and Simon and Watto did that superbly. To walk off at 0 for 80, it’s the position we need to be in,” North said.

“We batted well at Lord’s, had some big partnerships, and laid some foundations to give us some opportunity to chase that target down. This is a different Test, different conditions. Again, we’ll have to show some character,” he added.

Australia will resume at 0-80 today, they are still 465 behind with two days to play. (ANI)

Siddle says no place for spinners in The Oval Test

London, Aug 21(ANI): Australian paceman Peter Siddle has backed Australian selectors for their decision to play four quicks and use part-time spinners in the series decider at The Oval.

The Oval pitch turned low and slow on the opening day of the Test match, and Australian selectors were being asked if they should have opted for an off-spinner -Nathan Hauritz- in the team.

“I don’t think it’s deteriorating, still a good wicket. Still a nice wicket to bowl on. It’s going to stay pretty solid and will be a pretty good batting wicket over the next two or three days,” The Fox Sports quoted Siddle, as saying.

“I don’t think spin will be a massive part of it. When all four quicks stuck together and bowled in partnership, we had success,” he added.

Australia used part-time spinner Marcus North, who extracted some sharp turn and bounce from the pitch in the 14 overs that he bowled during the first day.

Meanwhile, England batsman Ian Bell expressed surprise at Hauritz not being picked fot the Test match.

“I guess when you look at it where we are now after day one, hindsight’s a great thing,” Bell said.

“When you look at it now, a little bit surprised. Again Australia beat us in two and a bit days at Headingley and that is pretty tough on someone not to get picked after such a good win,” he added. (ANI)

Malay Islamic court orders caning of model for drinking beer

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.19 (ANI): An Islamic court has ordered the caning of a Muslim part-time model after she admitted to drinking beer in ahotel night club.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was also fined 5,000 ringgit (856 dollars) for her offence, Sky News reports.

Shukarno, 32, was caught consuming alcohol when police raided a hotel nightclub in Pahang state last year.

She pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to six lashes with a rattan cane.

The Islamic court said the punishment must take place within seven days from next Monday.

Kartika will be held in a women’s prison until then and afterwards released “as soon possible”, prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi said.

Caning is administered on the buttocks and usually breaks the skin leaving permanent scars.

But a lighter cane than the one used on men will be used on Kartika with the purpose to “educate” rather than punish, Saiful said.

“This is the first case in Malaysia. It is a good punishment because under Islamic law a person who drinks commits a serious offense,” he said.

Kartika has said she wants to be caned quickly so she can get on with her life with her husband and children. (ANI)

Women with curable brain tumour refusing surgery to save her looks

London, July 10 (ANI): A women with a curable brain tumour is refusing surgery because it will ruin her looks.

Martha McBrier, 46, says that she’ rather die than have an abnormal face.

“My growing brain tumour is slowly killing me. It has already destroyed most of my hearing and every morning it takes me over two hours to steady myself enough to get out of bed,” the Mirror quoted

But one thing always makes me smile – when I look in the mirror I see my normal face.

Doctors insist they can cure me but the surgery that would save my life could paralyse part of my face.

And while I don’t consider myself vain, I would rather die than walk down the road with a face that doesn’t look normal.

My fear is that surgery might leave me ugly with a paralysed mouth where I can’t eat or talk properly. Or my eye won’t close properly or will constantly twitch.

And obvious disability isn’t the only thing that stops me having an operation. As a part-time stand-up comedienne, I worry about losing my sense of humour.

The thought that doctors might remove part of me along with this tumour terrifies me,” she added. (ANI)
