Larry King’s wife attempted suicide by overdosing on prescription drugs

London, June 11 (ANI): Talk show host Larry King’s wife has been revealed to have attempted suicide late last month by overdosing on prescription drugs as she battled depression.

According to TMZ.com, an officer with the Provo, Utah police reported entering Shawn King’s residence on May 2, going to a bedroom where paramedics were treating her and seeing “multiple pill bottles, all of which were empty on the bed”.

The police report noted “scriptures, a purse, other various books” and a letter which appeared to be a note left by the victim.

“It is unknown whose writing this letter was in, however wording on the letter led me to believe that (King) had intentionally taken the quantity of pills,” the Telegraph quoted the officer as writing in the report, which is labelled “attempted suicide”.

The report said labels on the bottles indicated multiple drugs including Ambien, Klonopin and Clonazepam, and many of them were empty.

One witness told police that Shawn King “is always depressed, but she had not mentioned anything that she would want to hurt herself or take her own life”. (ANI)

US man returns to finish marathon after suffering heart attack

New York, May 21 (ANI): A Texas dentist, who suffered a heart attack while taking part in the New York City marathon, returned after six months to the Big Apple to finish what he started.

Michael Goulding, 51, who is an avid runner, had collapsed in Harlem, seven miles from the finish line when he ran the course for the first time November 1.

Paramedics on the scene restarted his heart with a two shocks from a defibrillator. Two months later he ran a half marathon and did fine.

He said he trained six months before attempting his first marathon, and couldn’t believe when he woke up in the hospital that his heart had given out.

Before the reunion, Goulding went to the Harlem street corner where he had collapsed and ran the last seven miles by himself. There were no cheering crowds or blue line to follow, but he was satisfied just the same.

“It felt good. It shows how close the line is between life and death. I’m just very humbled,” the New York Post quoted him as saying.

Of the paramedics who saved his life, Goulding had nothing but praise for them.

“I was just touched by their professionalism,” he said on May 20 after a reunion with his rescuers.

“This isn’t a job for them. It’s a calling,” he added. (ANI)

Indian appearance like Sydney toddler reunited with parents

Sydney, May 18 (ANI): The toddler who was found wandering unsupervised on a Western Sydney street has been reunited with his parents.

He had previously been spotted by two off-duty paramedics and was in the police’s care.

His parents contacted the New South Wales Department of Community Services (DoCS) around 6 hours after he was found.

The reunion has come as a relief for the police who were even considering holding a press-conference to appeal to the boy’s parents to come forward.

“You can only just think about what could happen with a busy road with that number of vehicles at that time in the morning,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Perinth duty officer Inspector Cox, as saying.

Police will investigate the matter but it is too early to know if the parents will face criminal charges, he added.

“DOCS will advise us and police will be conducting further inquiries into this matter,” he told reporters. (ANI)

Indian origin worker dies after being dragged into machine

London, May 13 (IANS) An Indian origin worker was killed in a British factory after he was dragged into a machine that he was operating alone.

Mitesh Prashar, 24, who was working at Duco International in Slough, suffered severe injuries after his left arm and shoulder were crushed between two rollers of the heavy-duty machinery.

Witnesses have said that Prashar may have become caught in the machine while checking giant sheets of rubber for imperfections.

He was pronounced dead on the factory floor.

An inquest jury was told Wednesday that Prashar had expressed concern about using the machine without supervision.

Prashar’s family was present at the hearing in Windsor, Berkshire.

The victim had been working at Duco International Ltd based in Slough since January 2007 and the incident took place Jan 15, 2008, Daily Mail reported Thursday.

At about 2 a.m. on that fateful night, colleagues heard a strange noise before realising that something was wrong.

‘I heard what sounded like a loud sigh more than a scream. It wasn’t a cry for help. It was between a cry and a sigh and there were not any words. It wasn’t somebody in pain,’ team leader Richard Nugus was quoted as saying.

‘I was surprised that Mitesh was put on the night shift unsupervised without another inspections operative. It seemed to be quite a short period before he was allowed to run it (the machine) single-handedly.’

Prashar’s colleagues ran to help him and saw that his arm and shoulder had become trapped between metal rollers on the machine.

Paramedics declared him dead.

UK health service left shocked after survey participants rate Hitler as `cool’

London, May 11 (ANI): “Cool” is not a word usually associated with Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, whose genocidal purges cost tens of millions of lives between the mid-1930s and 1945.

But that was the response of ambulance employees taking part in a National Health Service (NHS) survey when asked to rate Hitler in comparison to their own chief executive.

The survey, entitled Making Leadership Cool, is part of a 10,000-pound project that will help the NHS West Midlands Strategic Health Authority to devise a new leadership strategy.

The questionnaire was circulated to all 3,300 workers at West Midlands Ambulance Service last month after two paramedics applied for a bursary to carry out the survey.

Staff was asked to rate Ian Cumming, chief executive of the NHS West Midlands Strategic Health Authority, on a scale of one to five. They were also asked if being gay, funny or black made a leader cool.

One ambulance employee, who did not want to be named, said: “I’ve never been asked to compare my boss with Adolf Hitler before. It’s the most bizarre work survey I’ve ever had to take. How can being cool have anything to do with managing an NHS trust?”

The West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust defended the survey, saying that it “identified the key characteristics of good leadership”. (ANI)

Footballer shot dead in Mexico

Mexico City, May 8 (DPA) A 21-year-old footballer who was active in the second category of Mexican football was shot dead in an apparent hold-up in southern Mexico City, his club said.

Ademir Meza played for Pumas Morelos, the second team of Mexican football giants Pumas de la UNAM. He was shot dead late Thursday inside his car, on a Mexico City avenue.

Police said the defender had resisted an attempt by two people travelling in another vehicle to rob him.

The city’s Justice Ministry said Meza and a passenger had been followed by another vehicle, possibly a taxi, that tried to block their way in the Pedregal de Santo Domingo neighbourhood.

The authorities said one of the attackers had a firearm and shot the player. The paramedics deployed to deal with the emergency could not save Meza’s life. The person who was travelling with him was unhurt.

This is the second case of a shooting involving a football player in Mexico City this year.

Top striker Salvador Cabanas, a pillar of the America team in Mexico and of the Paraguay national team, was shot in the head at a bar in January. Cabanas was seriously injured but survived and is currently recovering in Argentina, although the bullet remains lodged in his head and his return to professional football is uncertain.

Trains collide in north Melbourne

Five people have been taken to hospital after two trains collided near Craigiburn Railway Station in Melbourne’s outer-north on Tuesday night.

It is believed the 7:49pm service from Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station ran into the back of a Pacific National train about 8:40pm AEST.

Those taken to hospital include a 15-year-old girl.

Susanna Wilson, of Ambulance Victoria, says at least three people suffered serious injuries.

“There’s also … a number of what you could call walking wounded – another 10 or so people being assessed by advanced life support paramedics at the scene,” she said.

Kevin O’Callahan, of the State Emergency Service, says crews were quickly on scene.

“Our chaps have said that things are pretty controlled down there,” he said.

“The police ambulance and fire were on scene very quickly because it’s not that far out of the Craigieburn area – probably about two-and-a-half kilometres.

“The trains at that time of night, there’s not a lot of people on it, but there were some people injured.”

Another Indian student attacked in Australia

Sydney, Apr 30(ANI): In yet another attack on Indian students in Australia, a 24-year-old youth was beaten up by three unidentified assailants in Westmead, New South Wales, police said.

Merrylands Police said the man was walking along Amos Street at 7.30p.m. on Wednesday when three men came from behind him and repeatedly hit him in the face.

“The blows forced the man to the ground where he was set upon by three attackers who began kicking him,” The Daily Telegraph quoted a police statement, as saying.

“When a passenger from a passing taxi stopped to assist the victim, one of the assailants stole the assaulted man’s wallet, containing a small amount of money, and the attackers fled on foot towards the Parramatta Golf Club,” it added.

Police attended the scene along with paramedics. The student suffered a bleeding nose and cut to his mouth and was treated at the scene.

The attack follows a string of similar attacks against Indians in the country in the last 12 months. (ANI)

Rooney dazed as 17-year-old clubber dies next to him

London, Apr 27 (ANI): Ace striker Wayne Rooney, who was celebrating winning PFA Player of the Year, was left dazed after a 17-year-old clubber partying yards away from him collapsed and died.

Cole and Rooney were out with brother Graeme celebrating winning the award earlier that night. The Manchester United star was escorted out by a bouncer and then quizzed by police as a potential witness.

Rooney and Chelsea left-back Cole were said to have been nearby when the Portuguese tourist suffered a suspected heart attack at London’s swanky Whisky Mist at around 1.20 am on Tuesday.

The teen, said to have a history of health problems, was carried out by bouncers and given a Red Bull energy drink in an attempt to revive him, The Sun reports.

Paramedics were called and carried out heart massage with a defibrillator on the pavement. He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead soon after arrival.

A spokesman for Rooney said: “As Wayne was leaving he was asked, as were all other guests, whether he had seen anything. He simply told police he had seen nothing and was not aware of any incident.”

Cole, 29, also said he did not see anything suspicious.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of supplying Class A drugs after it was reported the boy had been passed something. (ANI)

Goa rape-murder victim Scarlett Keeling’s stepfather found dead in UK

London, Apr 17(ANI): Murdered British teenager Scarlett Keeling’s stepfather has been found dead at his flat in Torquay, Devon, a year after admitting he would “drink himself to death”.

Adam Foster, father of two of Scarlett’s younger siblings, was pronounced dead by paramedics on Monday after they went to his Victoria Road home.

Investigating officer Judith Dunn said that a cause of death has not been established, although a postmortem examination has taken place.

Foster, who helped raise Scarlett from the age of seven, had turned to booze after the 15-year-old was raped and killed in Goa in February 2008, The Sun reports.

Anjuna Beach shack workers Samson D’Souza and Placido Carvalho, who were arrested over charges of culpable homicide, sexual assault and destroying evidence, are on bail at present.

Scarlett had been on a six-month holiday in India with her mother, Fiona Mackeown, and other family members.

The initial police investigation concluded she drowned accidentally, but a second postmortem revealed the teenager had been attacked and raped.

A report from the government’s chief pathologist concluded that she had been held underwater for five to 10 minutes. (ANI)

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.

Police say Mr Cullen handed himself into police, and no charges have been laid.

Two die in Princes Hwy crash

Two people have been killed in a car crash in far East Gippsland.

Police say two cars collided on the Princes Highway at Genoa near the New South Wales border today.

Paramedics say there are reports two other people are injured.

Traffic is being redirected at Cann River along the Monaro Highway.

Police seek man over Kalgoorlie death

Police investigating a suspicious death in Kalgoorlie are still searching for a man they believe can assist in their inquiry.

49-year-old Grant Charles Jesser was found unconscious in an alley off Maritana Street in the centre of town early yesterday morning.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.

Police investigating the death want to speak to 29-year-old Gregory Peter Cullen who is believed to be driving a silver/white 2003 Holden Astra Hatch with New South Wales number plates.

Detective Sergeant Ian Jansen says police are not yet sure how Mr Jesser died.

“I can’t tell you any more about his injuries, other than that the injuries don’t appear to be self-inflicted and we can’t account for them so we are treating the death as suspicious.”

Man dies after crashing through nightclub window

A man is dead and two others injured after they fell through a nightclub window on the Gold Coast.

Police and building inspectors are investigating the fatal fall.

Police say three men crashed through a full-length glass window and fell nine metres to the ground outside the SAR Club in Orchid Avenue just before 1am AEST.

Paramedics treated them but the 19-year-old man died at the scene.

Two 18-year-old men are in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police say Workplace Health and Safety officers and building inspectors will compile reports and they will be sent to the coroner.

A post mortem examination is also expected to be done today.

Police on the Gold Coast say it is unlikely charges will be laid over the fatal fall.

Superintendent Jim Keogh says he has viewed security footage of the incident and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

“They’ve overbalanced – the full-length glass has given way, broken and the three have fallen the nine metres to the pavement below,” he said.

“It was a minor grapple – there was no punches thrown.”

Superintendent Keogh says the cause of the incident is not clear.

“That’s still the subject of an investigation at the moment being conducted by Surfers Paradise CIB,” he said.

Superintendent Keogh says it is to early to know whether the incident was alcohol fuelled.

“It is something that obviously the investigators will look at the alcohol consumption of all involved,” he said.

Insulation put in before fatal house fire

The Federal Government is refusing to speculate on the cause of a fire that killed a man and his grandson at a house that had roof installation installed under a scrapped economic stimulus program.

A man in his 50s and a three-year-old boy died in the blaze at a home at Peak Hill, in central western New South Wales, around midday yesterday.

Paramedics say another boy, aged about 10, tried to smash a window to get inside to help the pair. He was taken to Peak Hill Hospital with cuts and abrasions.

Fire crews spent almost two hours putting out the flames, which caused extensive damage to the house.

Local resident Doug Francis says the tragedy has shocked the small town. He says the grandfather who died in the blaze was well-known.

“It’s a big Aboriginal community,” he said.

“[The victim] is a very well-respected – and always has been – man in the community and it’s just going to be a very sad town in the next few days.”

Forensic investigators have spent the night scouring the scene to try to find out how the fire started.

The Federal Government has confirmed the house was fitted with insulation in October last year as part of the troubled home insulation program.

But in a statement, the Minister responsible for the program, Greg Combet, says it is inappropriate to speculate on the cause of the fire until the investigation is finished.

Mr Combet has extended his condolences to the victims’ family.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner once a cause is established.

Second road crash to spark driver warning

Steps are being taken to ensure safety on a Southern Highlands’ road after another crash yesterday not far from the site of a fatal accident earlier this week.

The accident on Monday killed Jodhie Fairweather of Hill Top, who was heading to work along Berrima Road at Moss Vale when she lost control of the car she was driving and hit a tree.

Police say a man suffered minor injuries in a single car accident on the same stretch of road yesterday, at the bend about 200 metres north of Douglas Road.

Paramedics say he declined medical treatment.

The second crash has prompted the Wingecarribee Shire Council to install warning signs to notify drivers to slow down in the area.

The council says the temporary signs will be in operation as soon as possible.

10yo hurt in sand surfing mishap

A 10-year-old girl is in hospital after an accident at a Fraser Island lake off south-east Queensland yesterday.

The girl was sand surfing down a large hill at Lake Wabby when she hit a tree.

Paramedics treated her for a puncture to her neck before she was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

Petition fights ambulance volunteers plan

Upper Hunter MP George Souris says he will maintain pressure on the New South Wales Government to drop a controversial plan to use volunteer ambulance drivers across his electorate.

He has taken possession of 1,000 submissions from residents of Merriwa, Murrurundi, Dungog, Stroud, Bulahdelah and Gloucester opposing the idea.

While the ambulance service and the paramedics’ union try to negotiate a compromise, Mr Souris says he will again take the community’s concerns to Parliament.

“I’m going to be presenting over 1,000 signatures to the Parliament and that’s just from Merriwa,” he said.

“That’s on behalf of the other towns and on behalf of the rest of the state.

“This issue is escalating not dying away as the mine would hope. It’s not safe in terms of the drivers, it’s not safe in terms of the patients. It’s a second-rate service, we will not accept it.

“It’s time for the Government to end the farce and go back to proper crewing of ambulance services for every community.”
