EXCLUSIVE – Players put the knife in, says disappointed Els

Ernie Els has hit out at players who criticised his redesign of Wentworth’s West Course this week, saying they had “put the knife” into him.

Wentworth owner Richard Caring, who spent 6.5 million pounds ($9.34 million) on the changes, had been “kicked in the teeth” by the players, Els told Reuters in an exclusive interview .

“If they had criticisms they could’ve handled it differently. That’s the sad part of the whole week, a lot of the guys I’ve known for a very long time came out and basically put the knife in and I don’t really appreciate that,” Els said on Sunday.

The redesign left few of the 18 holes untouched and several players at the PGA Championship complained in the media about the changes, especially the new moat and elevated green at the 18th.

“There is going to be criticism with any new design but I really wasn’t expecting the backlash I got,” Els said. “I don’t think anybody deserved it.

“If the people who made all those comments, especially the players, look back at what they said and what they achieved this week, it was all negative,” said Els after finishing well down the field following a closing 72 for 287, three over par.

“The tour doesn’t need it, the club doesn’t need it, the owner who has put all this money in doesn’t need it, I don’t need it.”

Caring acknowledged mistakes had been made with the redesign of the famous West Course and told reporters on Friday that he would take the blame.

“It’s unfortunate he had to come out (and say that),” said Els. “He is the guy who spent 6.5 million pounds on the changes.

“Who on earth is going to spend that money to enhance a golf course on television and make the sponsor happy, make the players happy and then the players kick him in the teeth because they don’t like a couple of holes?

CRITICAL COMMENTS

“For all this money we are playing for (a $5.63-million prize fund) we could be playing down the road…not come in here like a bunch of spoiled golfers,” said the world number seven.

“This guy is enhancing the flagship event, the whole tour, and players come in and criticise that. That’s amazing — how must he feel?”

Els said he could not understand why some players had not spoken to him directly.

“Some players who made critical comments came to me, some players haven’t come to me — and I don’t understand that.”

The 40-year-old South African added: “Obviously the 18th didn’t quite come out the way we wanted…but we didn’t need a bunch of know-all people to criticise everything — that is the disappointing part.

“These greens were only laid in November and December and we are now holding the biggest tournament on tour on these greens. I think it’s a hell of a feat by the whole team.”

Els said he would make some changes for the 2011 PGA Championship, particularly the eighth and 18th holes.

“Definitely 18. I can show you the plans I drew for it at the get-go,” said Els. “I’d also like to make changes on eight, I don’t like the heather on the mounds there.

“I’d even like to change the eighth green because that’s another one I wanted lower.

“But for the rest I think it’s unbelievable. The green superintendent Chris Kennedy has really got these bunkers almost the way we want them,” added the triple major winner.

Quiros beats Morrison in playoff to win Spanish Open

Spain’s Alvaro Quiros claimed his fourth European Tour victory when he defeated Britain’s James Morrison in a sudden-death playoff for the Spanish Open title on Sunday.

Both players had finished a stroke ahead of the Real Club field on 11-under-par 277, Quiros carding a closing two-under 70 and Morrison coming from six strokes behind the third-round lead with a 67.

A safe par on the first extra hole, the 18th again, earned Quiros the first prize of $440,000 dollars after Morrison found water with his approach to double-bogey.

The pair had finished a shot ahead of the overnight leader, Britain’s Mark Foster, and Alejandro Canizares of Spain and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin.

Foster led by three strokes overnight and was still ahead by two at the turn but the Englishman’s putter betrayed him over the closing holes.

Quiros’s win was reward and justification for supporting his home championship instead of warming up at Quail Hollow for next week’s Players Championship in the United States.

Twenty20 seriousness on par with one-day cricket, Tests: Clarke

St. Lucia, Apr 29(ANI): Australian skipper Michael Clarke has made an astonishing claim that Twenty20 cricket has the same status as one-day and Test cricket.

“It’s the same – it’s exactly the same. For me, it’s as serious as a one-day match or a Test match. There are blokes in this squad who haven’t played Test cricket. They haven’t played one-day cricket. It’s the ultimate for them,” the Fox News quoted Clarke, as saying.

“It’s become exactly the same as one-day and Test cricket. It’s a form of the game that we want to be the best in the world at. We’re not there yet, we’re improving, but this is a way for us to start,” he added.

The 29-year-old further said that from a player’s point of view the shortest version of the game is no more a marketing vehicle to swell audiences and attract new fans.

“There’s no such thing as a game of hit and giggle. That’s something that has changed. It used to be about putting on a show, entertaining the crowd. But from a player point of view, that is no longer the case,” Clarke said.

Clarke also revealed that he has approached the Cricket Australia (CA) management over altering its contract system to include Twenty20 specialists.

“I’ve told Cricket Australia that they should have contracts. I think there should be a Twenty20 contract introduced. I know once you play a certain number of Twenty20 games you can get upgraded to a Cricket Australia contract,” he said. (ANI)

Attempt to break Elvis impersonator world record bites the dust

London, September 1 (ANI): An attempt to have the most number of Elvis Presley impersonators bit the dust after only 29 people turned up.

Organisers of the event had their fingers crossed to beat a previous world record with 148 people dressed as ‘The King’ to sing ‘Viva Las Vegas’ at The Ship Inn at Par, Cornwall.

Pauline Giles, who ran the attempt, held the poor turnout on a combination of bad weather and the credit crunch responsible for the failed bid.

“It’s been raining all day which puts people off. Things are also a bit tight at the moment so all in all it was a slightly poor show,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

The existing record was set by 147 Australians eight years ago. (ANI)

Woods shocks golfing world with foul-mouthed swears at USPGA

Chaska (USA), Aug 18(ANI): American golfer Tiger Woods shocked TV viewers when he let out a foul-mouthed rant during the final round of the US PGA.

The world No.1 missed seven putts from inside 10 feet to finish three strokes back after a final-round 75 to lose to an unheard of South Korean golfer Y E Yang.

According to reports, after missing his par putt at the 17th, he shouted the word “f***” on television.

The 33-year-old did admit to his ranting.

“I hit the ball great off the tee, hit my irons well. I did everything I needed to do except for getting the ball in the hole,” The Mirror quoted Woods, as saying.

Wood’s outburst came after his controversial criticism of referee John Paramor, after the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last week.

Woods was seeking his first Major win of the season after missing the cut in the British Open and sharing sixth at the Masters and U.S. Open. He did not play in last year’s PGA, as he was recovering from reconstructive knee surgery. (ANI)

Pak team manager “disappointed and frustrated over under performance” in Lanka series

Islamabad, Aug.18 (ANI): Disappointed over the disastrous tour of Sri Lanka, Pakistan cricket team’s manager Yawar Saeed has admitted that the team under-performed during the recently concluded series.

“Yes I’m disappointed and frustrated with the overall performance. It was an under par performance,” Saeed said.

When asked about the match fixing allegations during the series, Saeed told PakPassion.net that all stories regarding the issue were baseless.

“There was nothing untoward regarding the players, they behaved impeccably. I spoke to all of the players and instructed them not to associate themselves with any individuals whom they were not familiar with and they followed my instructions. I have no idea whether any bookies were stopping at the hotel or not,” Saeed said.

Saeed said he has given his report to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the match fixing issue, and was pleased to know that the apex cricketing council endorsed his views that no Pakistani cricketer was involved in the issue.

“I gave my report to the ICC and they investigated matters and I’m pleased that they concluded that there was no such incident involving Pakistan players and any bookmakers,” he said. (ANI)

Delhi Stock Exchange teams up with IBM to re-start its operations

New Delhi, July 15 (ANI): IBM today announced that it has signed a 10-year information technology (IT) services agreement with Delhi Stock Exchange, one of the leading stock exchanges in India. As part of this Rs 11 crore agreement,

IBM will provide business continuity and disaster recovery services to DSE as well as remotely host and manage its IT infrastructure.

This will help the exchange meet the stringent business continuity guidelines as laid out by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) before it could resume its operations after a hiatus of six years. By engaging with IBM in a complete operational expenditure (pay-as-you-go) model, DSE will also save 100 percent capital expenditure on IT.

Signed in June 2009, this agreement demonstrates IBM’s focus to help clients ‘Do more with Less’ by engaging in an increasingly popular operational expense (opex) model. It also leverages IBM’s global experience of over 40 years to provide business continuity and resiliency services to help clients minimize the costs and time-frames associated with recovering business operations in the event of a disaster.

DSE was one of country’s largest stock exchanges – almost at par with Bombay Stock Exchange in the 90′s, and has been in existence for over 60 years.

In 2002, however, the exchange became inactive due to negligible trading volumes. Seven years later, the exchange is now looking at resurrecting itself to its former glory-one where it used to be bustling with over 2,800 companies listed.

IBM will play a key role in helping DSE go live for trading by providing a highly secure environment and a robust resiliency solution with the goal of zero data loss once the exchange becomes operational later this year.

“As DSE looks to claim back its position as one of country’s leading stock exchanges, the agreement with IBM couldn’t have happened at a better time,” said Mr HS Sidhu, Executive Director and CEO, Delhi Stock Exchange. “As the world’s leading IT services company, IBM will bring immense value to the exchange by providing time-tested and world-class managed services-that would help DSE become operational and successful once again.”

Vijay Gupta, Chairman – Business Development Committee, Delhi Stock Exchange remarked, “DSE will play a key role in the stock trading landscape of India, once re-launched. IBM’s commitment to helping DSE achieve that goal is commendable. IBM’s strong value proposition of providing managed services in an opex model was also one of the key reasons why DSE decided to choose IBM for this strategic relationship.”

Under this agreement, IBM will build, host and manage the entire disaster recovery infrastructure for DSE from its data center. IBM will also provide 24×7 monitoring services for hardware and networking devices from its command center.

Neeraj Sharma, Director, Integrated Technology Services, IBM India/South Asia, “Companies today want to do more with less in these economically challenging times. DSE’s trust in IBM is a testament to IBM’s value proposition and world-class capabilities to help its clients improve the operational efficiency and cost effectiveness as well as accelerate time-to-market for services.” (ANI)

Gilani shrugs off Pak’s economic hardship, doubles MNA’s fund

Peshawar, June 30 (ANI): In the times when Pakistan is facing severe economic hardships, the country’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has given a whopping windfall to all the lower house members by doubling their annual development fund to 20 million rupees.

He gave no reason for the hike, and made a single sentence announcement before the 19-day budget session.

“I announce to double the MNAs’ fund of one crore rupees,” the Dawn quoted Gilani, as telling the National Assembly on Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear if the 100 per cent increase in the fund would apply also to the 100 members of the Senate, who until now had been on a par with their lower house counterparts for these allocations.

The practice, continuing since late 1980s, has often been described by critics as a kind of political bribe to lawmakers.

However, former PM Shaukat Aziz stopped giving funds to the opponents of military president Pervez Musharraf.

Although the hike was greeted with desk-thumping from both ruling coalition and opposition, many questions are likely to be raised about the jurisdiction of such a move by Gilani when Pakistan was facing financial stringency.

The new move was neither mentioned by the government in the fiscal budget nor was it asked for in budget debates. (ANI)
