Save me from Pappu Yadav, says CPI-M leader’s widow

Patna, April 20 (IANS) The widow of slain Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator Ajit Sarkar, who is fighting the Lok Sabha polls from Purnia in Bihar, has urged the Election Commission to provide her adequate security against her husband’s alleged murderer and MP Pappu Yadav.

Madhavi Sarkar, contesting as a Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) candidate, has told the poll panel that she feels threatened by Pappu Yadav, formerly of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

‘I have told the Election Commission that a free Pappu Yadav is a serious threat to my life. Anything can happen to me. Even the local police are helpless,’ Madhavi told IANS on telephone.

Madhavi’s husband, who was locked in a feud with Pappu Yadav over farm labourers, was shot dead with his driver Harendra Sharma and party worker Ashfaqur Rehman in Purnia, about 350 km from here, on June 14, 1998.

Pappu Yadav, elected to the Lok Sabha from Madhepura in 2004, was held guilty of Sarkar’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court last year. The Patna High Court granted him bail two months ago.

He is now busy campaigning in the constituency for his mother Shanti Priya Devi, an independent candidate who enjoys Congress support.

‘Pappu Yadav is posing a serious threat to peace in Purnia. Free, fair and peaceful polling is not possible unless he is put behind bars,’ said Madhavi.

Earlier this month, the Patna High Court rejected Pappu Yadav’s plea to suspend his conviction in the murder case so that he could contest the Lok Sabha election.

After he was barred from contesting, Pappu Yadav revolted against the Lalu Prasad-Ram Vilas Paswan alliance and vowed to campaign for the Congress. He was expelled from RJD earlier this month.

His wife Ranjita Ranjan, a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP, has also defected to the Congress to contest from Supaul constituency.

Pappu Yadav revolts against Lalu-Paswan, wife joins Congress

Patna, April 5(IANS) Murder convict Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Pappu Yadav, barred from contesting elections, Sunday revolted against the Lalu Prasad-Ram Vilas Paswan alliance in Bihar and said he would campaign for the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls.

His wife Ranjita Ranjan, a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP, joined the Congress to contest from Supaul constituency of the state as its candidate. She had earlier refused the Paswan-headed LJP’s nomination. She was elected from Saharsa in Bihar on the LJP ticket in the 2004 election.

Pappu Yadav said he was angry over RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s ‘highhandedness’ in distributing tickets for the polls. He said he was ignored while deciding on candidates.

‘I will tour Bihar to campaign for Congress victory and defeat of communal Bharatiya Janata Party and its poll allies,’ Pappu Yadav told reporters.

The former RJD leader refused to comment on whether he would join the Congress.

The Patna High Court last Thursday rejected Pappu Yadav’s plea to suspend his conviction in a murder case so that he could contest the Lok Sabha election.

Ranjita Ranjan told reporters that she quit the LJP because she was neglected and ignored by the party leadership. ‘Now I am in Congress. I strongly feel that there is hope and space for youngsters in Congress,’ she said.

Huge rush in temples on Ramnavami

NEW DELHI: People thronged temples in large numbers on Ramnavami, the last day of the nine-day festival of Navratri, on Wednesday. Early morning,
many families, including children, couples, old and young, broke their fast by worshipping young girls who are believed to symbolise the Goddess Durga. They are offered puris, halwa, chanas and red chunnis on the festive occasion.

The city saw many processions early in the morning. Devotees queued up outside temples. “We started with Ram stuti and then Aarti was done. Later prasaad was distributed to all the devotees. The ritual took 4-5 hours,” said Pappu Pandey, priest of Ram Mandir at Patparganj. “The last day of navaratri is always very auspicious. I have come to the temple with my family to pray,” said Ravi Prakash, a devotee.

Navratri, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is celebrated twice a year during the spring and the autumn season. It is one of the most holy and revered festivals of Hindus. Most of the devotees observe fasts during the nine-day festival and consume only fruits and milk.

Matka king Pappu Savla faces fresh charges

MUMBAI: A week after he was discharged from the murder case of Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar, the Mumbai police on Thursday registered fresh
charges against matka king-turned-builder Pappu Savla following Wednesday’s raid on a gambling den at Pydhonie.

A police team had swooped down on Ayesha Mansion, which is located on Garibdas street, and arrested 12 persons. Three different matkas were on at the time of the raid. Officials believe Savla to be the brain behind the racket.

Savla, Suresh Shetty and Ramesh Shah are wanted in connection with the case, police officials said. Shah is the brother of Jaya, who was arrested for plotting the murder of her estranged husband, Suresh Bhagat, in an orchestrated road accident last year.

Pappu can’t become MP

PATNA: Close on the heels of the Supreme Court declining to stay the conviction of cine actor Sanjay Dutt to enable him to contest parliamentary
polls from Lucknow, the Patna High Court on Thursday rejected RJD MP Pappu Yadav’s plea for a similar reprieve in CPM MLA Ajit Sarkar murder case in which he has been awarded life term by the trial court.

A division bench comprising Justice Shivakirti Singh and Justice Dharnidhar Jha rejected Yadav’s plea made in an interlocutory petition filed with his criminal appeal against the conviction.

The sitting Madhepura MP wanted to re-contest the parliamentary poll. Unlike Dutt whose candidature had been announced by the Samajwadi Party, Pappu’s candidature had not announced by the RJD.

The Patna HC had last week also rejected a similar interlocutory petition of RJD’s Siwan MP Mohd Shahabuddin who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a case of kidnap-cum-murder by the trial court.

The HC had earlier admitted for hearing the criminal appeals of Pappu and Shahabuddin against their conviction. However, the state government opposed their interlocutory petitions.

Shahabuddin’s wife Heena Shahab, hitherto known as a housewife, has since filed her nomination papers from Siwan as an RJD candidate. Pappu’s wife Ranjeeta Ranjan, sitting LJP MP from Saharsa, is seeking re-election from Supaul as Saharsa has ceased to exist as a parliamentary constituency after delimitation.

Another convicted MP Surajbhan Singh, also awarded life term in a case of murder, has managed to get his party LJP’s ticket for wife Veena Devi from Nawada.

Court turns down Pappu Yadav’s plea to contest poll

Patna, April 2 (IANS) The Patna High Court Thursday rejected Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Rajesh Ranjan Yadav alias Pappu Yadav’s plea to suspend his conviction in a criminal case so that he could contest the coming Lok Sabha election.

A division bench of the court rejected the petition of Yadav, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court for murdering Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator Ajit Sarkar in 1998. Yadav, the sitting MP from Madhepura, is currently out on bail.

The firebrand CPI-M leader, who had a running feud with Yadav over issues relating to farm labourers, was shot dead, along with his driver Harendra Sharma and party worker Ashfaqur Rehman, at Subhas Nagar in the state’s Purnea town on June 14, 1998.

Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) judge B.M. Srivastava had Feb 14 pronounced Yadav, former independent legislator Rajan Tiwari and Anil Yadav guilty and awarded them life terms.

The high court had last month reserved its order on Yadav’s petition after hearing arguments of both sides.

Meanwhile, the RJD is yet to nominate a candidate from Madhepura seat as the party was waiting for the court’s decision on Yadav’s plea to contest election. His father Chandradeo Prasad Yadav is now likely to be fielded by the party from the seat.

Last month, another RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin’s plea for suspension of conviction to be able to contest election was dismissed by the Patna High Court. Shahabuddin is MP from Siwan and currently lodged in jail.

The RJD has now fielded his wife Hina Sahab from Siwan.

SC rejects Sanjay Dutt’s plea to contest LS polls

Throwing water over the Samajwadi Party’s strategy to wrest control of the prestigious Lucknow seat by fielding Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected his plea to allow him to contest the Lok Sabha elections by staying his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

The adverse apex court decision has also dashed the expectations of several others like RJD MPs Pappu Yadav and Mohammed Shahabuddin and LJP MP Suraj Bhan Singh. Convicted on various charges, these MPs had been hoping for a favourable judgement from the Supreme Court in the Sanjay Dutt case so that they too could seek relief on similar grounds. Pappu Yadav had even visited the Congress headquarters recently, hoping for a ticket from the party.

”In view of the serious offence for which he (Sanjay Dutt) has been convicted…we are not inclined to suspend the conviction and sentence awarded by the Special Judge,” a bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said dismissing Dutt’s petition.

Responding to the judgement, the 50-year-old Dutt said in Lucknow that he respected the court’s decision. ”I am a law-abiding citizen…I really respect the decision of the court…Lucknow is my home whether I contest the election or not,” he said. Asserting that he had full faith in judiciary, Dutt said, ”I am not going anywhere. I am here to stay I am not leaving. Any candidate who will come will be my candidate. It is my seat and will always remain so.”

Asked whether his wife Manyata will now be the SP candidate from Lucknow, he said that it will be decided by the party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and general secretary Amar Singh. The well known actor, whose father Sunil Dutt was a cabinet minister in the UPA government, had sought suspension of his conviction under the Arms Act in connection with the Mumbai blasts case. He has been sentenced to six years imprisonment and is out on bail granted by the apex court.

In its observation, the apex court asserted that Dutt is a well-known artists and not a ”habitual offender” and whose father was also a well-known actor deeply involved in politics. ”Despite all these favourable circumstances, we do not think that this is a fit case where conviction and sentence could be suspended,” the bench, also comprising Justices P Sathasivam and RM Lodha, said in its nine-page judgement. It pointed out that election law clearly prohibited Dutt from contesting the polls.

”Law prohibits any person who has been convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years from contesting the election and such person shall be disqualified for a further period of six years since his release”, the bench said. It said the power of the court to stay the conviction to enable a convict contest the elections has to be exercised rarely.

The Bench rejected Dutt’s contention that his case should be considered on the lines of that of BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu whose conviction and three year imprisonment in a road rage death case was stayed by the apex court to enable him to contest the Amritsar Lok Sabha bye election.

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan launches voter awareness campaign

Mumbai, Apr 1 (ANI): Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has launched a film to promote the voter awareness campaign.

An initiative of the Ahmedabad-based non-political group ‘Association for Democratic Reforms’ (ADR), the campaign is aimed at creating awareness on the power of the vote among a large youth population that remains disillusioned and does not participate in the election process.

The campaign theme “Sacche ko chune, acche ko chune” also carries the message to a vast majority of the common people that they should be fully informed of the antecedents of the person they vote for.

“We are trying to tell the voters not only to cast their vote, but everyone should realise the importance of their vote. The voters can take the information of the candidates who are in their constituency. They should take information of candidates educational qualifications, if they have any criminal cases against them or not, or any other relevant information. The voters should then evaluate the information and only then cast their vote,” said Khan.

An advertisement campaign mounted by the Election Commission, “Pappu can’t Vote”, parodying a popular catchy film song, that makes a pun on the trendy youth who abstains from voting, has caught the imagination of the country.

India has carried out various poll reforms to elicit as much information on the candidates standing for election, barring those convicted beyond two years and issuing Voter Identity Cards to check bogus voting. (ANI)
