Pak Qaeda hand in 2006 trans-Atlantic bomb plot revealed

London, Sep.8 (ANI): New evidence put before a British jury during a retrial of three Brit Muslim convicts suggests that the men used code words to discuss their plans with an al-Qaeda fixer based in Pakistan.

The e-mails and conversations suggest that the plot was in its final stages, possibly days away from execution in 2006.

The seven daily flights highlighted by the three plotters were: 14.15 United Airlines Flight 931 to San Francisco; 15.00 Air Canada Flight 849 to Toronto; 15.15 Air Canada Flight 865 to Montreal; 15.40 United Airlines Flight 959 to Chicago; 16.20 United Airlines Flight 925 to Washington; 16.35 American Airlines Flight 131 to New York; 16.50 American Airlines Flight 91 to Chicago.

According to The Telegraph and the Daily Express, the batteries the gang planned to use as part of their detonators were bought in Pakistan.

An ingredient in the bomb mix was the orange soft drink Tang – sold in Pakistan – which had a high sugar content to aid the explosion.

A British intelligence source said: “The use of drink bottles sold in Pakistan and batteries sold in Pakistan underline the plot’s ties to that country. The foot soldiers were from Britain – but the organisers were in Pakistan.”

A security source said of the conspiracy: “It was very clever and the airport scanners would not have picked up the devices at all.”

Prosecutor Peter Wright told the Woolwich Crown Court in South East London how the would-be bombers were “a cell of home-grown terrorists activated and directed by a designated leader in Pakistan.”

That was confirmed by a government source in Pakistan, who said the plot was believed to have originated “with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.”

Seized e-mails showed the chain of terror stretched from there, across the lawless border to Pakistan, to London and to the woods of High Wycombe where explosives were buried.

The aim was to mirror the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, which killed 259 passengers and 11 in the Scottish town.

Aliases exposed during the trial revealed the terror kingpin in Pakistan was dubbed “Paps” or “Papa”.

Ali called himself Imran and Chacha and also set up email accounts in the bogus names Tippu Khan and Jameel Masood.

His co-conspirators used aliases such as Fatty, Arro and Nigga.

Hydrogen peroxide was known as “aftershave”, police surveillance as “skin problems” and martyrdom videos were referred to as “wedding tapes”.

It is also thought that the bomb makers received training at an al-Qaeda camp in Pakistan.

A mystery Pakistani, thought to be a top al-Qaeda envoy, made contact with the three would-be suicide bombers during a flying visit to Britain in June 2006.

Experts who tested the explosive mix on the aircraft were horrified.

A witness said: “It was absolutely devastating.” (ANI)

Senior FBI agent says Gaddafi may have sanctioned Lockerbie bombing

Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): A senior FBI agent has claimed that Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi must have personally okayed the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people.

Richard Marquise, an FBI veteran who led the US task force probing the December 1988 blast, said it is unthinkable that such a major terrorist attack in a regime like Libya could have been authorized without Gaddafi’s approval.

“If you were a senior minister, would you do this without telling the boss? I doubt it. I have to think [Gaddafi] knew something was going to happen, something that the US would be pissed about, and he said OK,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Marquise, as saying.

He said investigators had tried to pursue the chain of responsibility up through the Libyan hierarchy, but had been unable to muster the necessary evidence.

“We couldn’t make the connections… A lot of names came up… We had names of people in the Libyan hierarchy, buying radios, making inquiries about putting bombs in radios,” Marquise said.

The bomb that destroyed Pan Am 103 was hidden in a Toshiba radio cassette player.

“But there was no real overt act [that could serve as the basis for an indictment. It would have been nice to indict the entire Libyan regime, but our system wouldn’t allow for it. It would have been a real struggle to show Gaddafi and others in the chain,” he said.

Marquise said he was also convinced that Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the former Libyan intelligence officer who is the only man ever convicted in the attack, was no “rogue” agent.

“It had been hoped that Megrahi would give us the whole story, and go up the chain. That didn’t happen. And Megrahi never talked. He did everything for his leader,” he said. (ANI)

Lockerbie bomber once again declares his innocence

Tripoli (Libya), Aug.22 (ANI): Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the man accused of perpetrating the bombing of a Pan Am Flight 103 that claimed 270 lives in 1988 in Lockerbie, southern Scotland, has once again proclaimed his innocence.

In an interview to The Times at his house, in the Dimachk area of Tripoli, al-Megrahi who was released by the Scottish authorities earlier this week on grounds of ill health, said: ” I always believed I would come back if justice prevailed.”

He did not come across as bitter or angry but continued to insist on his innocence, as he has done from the day of his conviction. He abandoned his appeal, he said, not because he was guilty but to give himself the best possible chance of going home before he died.

He had applied to be freed on compassionate grounds and also to be transferred to a Libyan prison under the terms of an agreement Britain and Libya signed in April.

One of the conditions of the latter was that all legal proceedings had to be finished.

He denied reports that he had been pressured to drop the appeal by a Scottish or British government terrified that such a hearing would expose a grave miscarriage of justice, but he added: “If there is justice in the UK I would be acquitted or the verdict would be quashed because it was unsafe. There was a miscarriage of justice.”

Al-Megrahi promised that before he died he would present new evidence through his Scottish lawyers that would exonerate him.

“My message to the British and Scottish communities is that I will put out the evidence and ask them to be the jury,” he said. He refused to elaborate.

Asked who, then, was responsible for the deaths of 270 people who died in the Lockerbie bombing, al-Megrahi smiled. “It’s a very good question but I’m not the right person to ask.”

He insisted that it was not Libya and would not be drawn on suggestions that it was Syria, Iran or the Palestinians.

He said that he understood why many of the victims’ relatives were angry at his release.

“They have hatred for me. It’s natural to behave like this,” he said, although he pointedly added that others had written to him in prison to say that they forgave him whether he was guilty or innocent.

“They believe I’m guilty which in reality I’m not. One day the truth won’t be hiding as it is now. We have an Arab saying: ‘The truth never dies’.”

Meanwhile, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s son, Saif, has claimed that al Megrahi’s release was linked to trade deals between Britain and Libya.

Saif al Islam Gaddafi said that Megrahi’s return was a “victory” for all Libyans.

According to The Telegraph, he made the claims in a television interview for Libyan television recorded as he accompanied Megrahi on the flight back from Scotland to Libya on Thursday.

The UK government has vehemently denied the claims.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “There is no deal. All decisions relating to Megrahi’s case have been exclusively for Scottish ministers, the Crown Office in Scotland and the Scottish judicial authorities.” (ANI)

Welcome to the posh prison restaurant where inmates prepare, serve food!

London, May 10 (ANI): A restaurant with a pan-European menu, mood lighting and contemporary design will soon have its official launch – in a Brit jail.

The Clink at High Down prison in Surrey is expected to become one of the most talked-about restaurant openings of the year.

The plush eatery, which has a private dining area with 20 seats and serves as the staff canteen, has razor wire on the roof and uses plastic cutlery.

Inmates are learning to prepare and serve dishes as part of a new project to rehabilitate offenders and help them gain qualifications that can prove handy when they look for a job in the outside world after their release.

“We wanted a realistic, contemporary restaurant so that prisoners who are trained here can go into the real world,” the Telegraph quoted Alberto Crisci, catering manager at the prison, as saying.

“Yes, we do have plastic cutlery but this is a prison. We would have preferred metal knives and forks but this is a unique dining experience,” Alberto added.

Peter Dawson, the prison governor, said: “I will be interested in hearing from people who have a legitimate interest in prison to come in and visit The Clink.

“For example, we have already had an expression of interest from the local Rotary Club and I believe that would be legitimate because we will be able to ask those people if they are interested in employing former offenders.”

David Hanson, the prisons minister, added: “The Clink is an example of our commitment to ensure that prison is about more than locking offenders in cells and must also be about providing opportunities for offenders to gain real life, valuable skills and qualifications that will be of genuine use on their release.” (ANI)

CDC to issue travel advisory on Mexico

Washington – The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was to issue an advisory against non-essential travel to Mexico – the epicentre of the global swine flu outbreak – acting director Richard Besser said Monday. “This is out of an abundance of caution,” he said, adding that the Atlanta, Georgia-based CDC had confirmed 26 deaths in Mexico were a result of swine flu. “This is a small fraction of what they are seeing,” Besser warned.

At least 149 people have died of an influenza-type illness in Mexico, Mexican Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos said Monday. An estimated 1,000 people were hospitalized.

Besser said the CDC was working with the World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization as part of a tri-national team on the ground in Mexico.

Besser confirmed 40 cases of swine flu in the five US states of New York, Ohio, Kansas, Texas and California. “The change is 20 additional cases in New York City. This represents additional testing and not an ongoing spread of the virus.”

Those who have fallen ill in the US range in age from 7-54 years. “We have not seen severe disease in this country,” Besser said, but cautioned that as the situation was evolving quickly, “you don’t know going into an outbreak what it will look like at the end.”

US authorities will also be distributing yellow cards at ports of entry with information on swine flu.

Responding to a question on why the outbreak was more severe in Mexico, Besser said, “Why are we seeing a different disease spectrum in Mexico than we are seeing here? I expect we’ll see additional cases and spectrum of the disease will expand.”(dpa)

Have your say: Baby P

An investigation into suspicious bruises on the little boy’s head and body “drifted” and the six-month limit for bringing a common assault charge passed, the unpublished serious case review into the tragedy found.

The report said the child might have been “more effectively safeguarded” if his mother had been charged, according to BBC London.

Baby P, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was 17 months old when he died at the hands of his mother, her boyfriend and their lodger in August 2007.

He had suffered more than 50 injuries despite receiving 60 visits from social workers, doctors and police over an eight-month period.

The little boy came to the attention of the authorities in December 2006 when he was taken to Whittington Hospital in north London with bruises on his head, nose, chest and right shoulder.

Detectives arrested his mother, Baby P was placed on the child protection register, and a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The prosecutors requested further evidence, including medical reports, and a specialist was identified to carry out a review of the child’s injuries.

But in March 2007 the detective in charge moved to a different part of the Metropolitan Police without formally handing the case to another officer and the investigation “drifted”. The specialist had no further contact from police until July 2007 despite emailing to ask what was happening with the case, the report said.

Scotland Yard said it could not comment on the report.

Carnation Auto inks JV pact with Variety Group

Carnation Auto, promoted by Jagdish Khattar, former chairman and managing director of Maruti Suzuki, has signed a joint venture pact with the Variety Group to set up multi-brand auto solution hubs in Andhra Pradesh.

The venture would offer service and maintenance, sale of secondhand cars, insurance services, and accessories i. e. all services under one roof. The company, in near future, has also plan to sell new cars.

Under the arrangement, Carnation would hold a 51 per cent stake in the latest JV while Variety will hold the remaining stake in it.

According to company officials, the Hyderabad-based group will invest Rs 40 crore in phases for setting up about 10 auto solution hubs including four in Hyderabad.

It may be noted that Carnation Auto has received Rs 250 crore of investment, including Rs 108 crore by Premji Invest and ICICI Ventures. In addition, the company already has JV partners in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Carnation Auto intends to open about 100 outlets across the country at an investment of about Rs 1,000 crore in the next four years to set up a pan-India network of outlets to provide automobile solutions.

According to reliable sources, out of total planned outlets, about 40-50 outlets are expected to go on stream by March next year. For the current financial year, Carnation Auto is expecting revenues of Rs 300 crore.

Jordan parliament stops move to sue Israeli leaders over Gaza

mman – Jordan’s lower house of parliament is abanonding an attempt to sue Israeli leaders before the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the January offensive on the Gaza Strip because the chamber lacked “legal and constitutional powers,” parliament speaker Abdul Hadi Majali was quoted on Monday as saying.

Majali made the revelation in a letter to the Islamic Action Front, Jordan’s largest political party.

“The House of Representatives cannot go ahead with the move because it is not the constitutional authority which represents the state on the international level. This role lies with the government, particularly the Foreign Ministry,” said Majali.

However Majali, a pro-government lawmaker, said in his letter that the chamber was still “interested in the completion of this step through a pan-Arab perspective.”

He noted that the Arab summit in Kuwait in mid-January had asked the group to document the crimes Israel committed during its invasion of the Gaza Strip and “prepare a legal file to be forwarded to the world’s legal bodies concerned with the trial of war criminals.”

The Jordanian lower house decided unanimously in January to file a lawsuit before the ICC, accusing Israeli leaders of committing “war crimes” by launching the attack on the Gaza Strip that killed more than 1,300 people and wounded about 5,000. (dpa)

One killed, 15 feared injured in Assam blast

Guwahati, Mar 31 (ANI): At least one person was killed and 15 others were feared to be injured in a bomb blast that occurred at about 6.00 to 6.15 p.m. at Jyoti Kuchi area in western Guwahati.

The incident occurred during the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s visit in Assam.

Mukherjee was addressing media at a city hotel in Pan Bazar, about three kilometres from the blast site in Lal Ganesh area, when the bomb blast occurred.

According to the police, the bomb was planted on a parked motor cycle and went off in the area which was packed with evening shoppers and vendors.

Mukherjee during his interaction with media said that terrorists might strike during the election time.

“We fear terrorist attacks. But having said that, we are ready to counter such threats,” Pranab Mukherjee said. (ANI)

Mukherjee lauds sustained evolution of India-Africa partnership

New Delhi, Mar.23 (ANI): Lauding the gradual and growing evolution of the India-Africa partnership, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said this long and historic relationship has acquired a sustainability that should do both New Delhi and the African continent proud.

Speaking at the Fifth India-Africa Conclave, Mukherjee said that both India and Africa have marched together; traversed similar paths; shared similar values and cherished the same dreams.

Describing the partnership as time tested and multi-faceted, he said: “Today, both India and Africa have emerged as strong and dependable partners, who are well positioned to confront the growing challenges facing humanity, be it combating the scourge of international terrorism, eradicating hunger and poverty, tackling global warming, or evolving new frameworks for international institutions.”

India’s relationship with Africa, he said, is based on the solid foundation of “our steadfast commitment for the rapid growth and progress of Africa.

“The formalisation of an institutional mechanism for the India-Africa dialogue in the form of the India-Africa Forum Summit is a reflection of India’s commitment to work with the continent to fulfil its aspirations,” he added.

He used the occasion to urge Least Developed Countries (LDCs) of which 33 are from the African continent to use India’s Duty Free Tariff Preference Scheme (DFTP), which was introduced in April last year, to further their development.

He announced that this year the Ministry of External Affairs has designed special courses for experts from Africa in the field of mining and new and renewable energy resources.

“We have (also) increased the number of training slots for African countries from 1100 to 1600,” he added.

“Over the next five to six years India will also undertake in Africa, on a grant basis, projects in critical areas such as higher and vocational education, science, IT, agriculture and renewable energy. A sum of USD 500 million has been allocated for this,” Mukherjee said.

He also said that the Government of India’s Pan-African e-Network Project was another shining example of the India-Africa partnership. It was a project aimed at linking major universities in different regions of Africa with major Indian universities and centres of excellence on the one hand, as also major hospitals in Africa with super-specialty hospitals in India, on the other.

It was also a matter of satisfaction to note that India-Africa bilateral trade had reached USD 36 billion in 2007-08, up from USD three billion in 2000-01, Mukherjee said. (ANI)

Scientists build world’s most buoyant boats

Washington, March 21 (ANI): Scientists in China have built mini prototypes for the most buoyant boats ever, which are made of copper mesh coated with a highly water repellent material that can float extremely well.

According to a report in National Geographic News, the boats, made out of the superhydrophobic mesh, even stay afloat “when the upper edges are just a hair below the surface of the water.”

“In fact, these boats are able to carry a load exceeding the maximal capacities calculated from the boat’s volume,” said study co-author Qinmin Pan, a chemist at the Harbin Institute of Technology.

The coating, made of silver nitrate and other chemicals, creates an “air film” around the copper mesh, which prevents direct contact with water.

“The presence of air film increases the water displace-volume of boats to a certain extent, leading to a large loading capacity,” Pan said.

The film also prevents water from seeping through the mesh.

Since the copper mesh is flexible, scaling up the technology to carry humans would be “problematic,” according to Pan.

The researchers instead envision small-scale applications such as aquatic robots for environmental surveillance.

Since the water-repellant material may make it easier for the boats to move through water, Pan said, “The present finding may be extended to the design of novel superfloating and drag-reducing-fast moving-aquatic devices.” (ANI)

India’s response to Pakistan dossier on Mumbai terror attack soon

New Delhi, Feb 27 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said India will respond to Pakistan’s questions on the investigation into the Mumbai terror attacks whenever the government will be in a position to do so.

“When we received these questions seeking clarification on the dossier, which we submitted to the Pakistan authorities to help them investigate further, at that point of time we made the commitment that the Government of India will respond. We will give the clarification whatever is possible. Whenever we’ll be in a position to share it with Pakistan, it will be done soon,” Mukherjee said on the sidelines of the launch of Pan-Africa e-network project.

Earlier, Home Minister P Chidambaram said that New Delhi would respond to Pakistan’s dossier after filing of the charge sheet in the case in a Mumbai court.

The charge sheet, running into more than 11,000 pages, was filed by police before a Mumbai court on Wednesday.

Thirty-eight people, including Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist of the 26/ 11 terror strikes, and two Pakistani soldiers, were charged with “waging war” against India.

On February 12, Islamabad had acknowledged for the first time that the November attack in Mumbai was launched from and partly planned in Pakistan.

Pakistani investigators lodged a police complaint against eight suspects, including Kasab. (ANI)

Diamond loses title of “world’s hardest material”

London, Feb 17 (ANI): A material known as lonsdaleite has displaced diamond as the “world’s hardest material”.

Though diamond lost its title of the “world’s hardest material” some time ago, to man-made nanomaterials of slightly greater toughness, now, a rare natural substance looks likely to leave them all far behind – at 58 percent harder than diamond.

According to a report in New Scientist, Zicheng Pan at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and colleagues simulated how atoms in two substances believed to have promise as very hard materials would respond to the stress of a finely tipped probe pushing down on them.

The first, wurtzite boron nitride has a similar structure to diamond, but is made up of different atoms.

The second, the mineral lonsdaleite, or hexagonal diamond is made from carbon atoms just like diamond, but they are arranged in a different shape.

Only small amounts of wurtzite boron nitride and lonsdaleite exist naturally or have been made in the lab so until now no one had realised their superior strength.

The simulation showed that wurtzide boron nitride would withstand 18 percent more stress than diamond, and lonsdaleite 58 percent more.

If the results are confirmed with physical experiments, both materials would be far harder than any substance ever measured.

Rare mineral lonsdaleite is sometimes formed when meteorites containing graphite hit Earth, while wurtzite boron nitride is formed during volcanic eruptions that produce very high temperatures and pressures.

If confirmed, however, wurtzite boron nitride may turn out most useful of the two, because it is stable in oxygen at higher temperatures than diamond.

This makes it ideal to place on the tips of cutting and drilling tools operating at high temperatures, or as corrosion resistant films – on the surface of a space vehicle, for example.

Paradoxically, wurtzite boron nitride’s hardness appears to come from the flexibility of the bonds between the atoms that make it up. When the material is stressed some bonds re-orientate themselves by about 90 degrees to relieve the tension.

Although diamond undergoes a similar process, something about the structure of wurtzite boron nitride makes it nearly 80 percent stronger after the process takes place, according to study co-author Changfeng Chen at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, an ability diamond does not have. (ANI)

Evidence indicates Greek cult sacrificed animals on mountaintop altar 3,200 yrs ago

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): A team of archaeologists has found evidence which suggests that a Greek cult worshipped Zeus, the “king of Gods”, and sacrificed animals as part of rituals, atop Mount Lykaion in Arcadia 3,200 years ago.

According to a report in Discovery News, the archaeological team, from the University of Pennsylvania Museum, discovered burnt animal bones, petrified lightning and a bronze male hand grasping a silver lightning bolt at the mountaintop site of a Mycenaean Greek cult, whose members gathered around an “open fire altar”.

“Zeus was a sky god, and the lightning bolt was one of his important emblems,” project field director David Gilman Romano told Discovery News.

Romano and his team dug a trench at the high-altitude site and uncovered a trove of artifacts, including burnt bones – mostly from goats and sheep – human and animal figurines, drinking vessels, miniature bronze tripods, silver coins and a small double-headed axe known as a labrys, a motif incorporated into labyrinths found elsewhere in Greece and around the world.

The bronze male hand holding the silver lightning bolt likely represents Zeus, according to the archaeologists.

It was found near a sample of glass-like fulgurite, otherwise known as petrified lightning, which is formed when lightning strikes sandy soil.

It is not clear if the fulgurite was formed on the mountain or elsewhere.

“The altar would have been situated on top of the hill and may have been represented by a ring of stones,” Romano said, adding that it was flanked by a nearby sacred area known as a temenos, which appeared to have no temple or other structure.

Early writings suggest that Mycenaean cult members sacrificed animals – and possibly even humans – before feasting.

Romano and his colleagues haven’t found any human bones at the site, but indicated they would not be surprised if they did.

The recent discoveries support the writings of Pausanias, a second century B.C. Greek historian who described “the birthplace of Zeus” at Arcadia in his multi-volume Description of Greece.

In addition to searching for human remains on the mountaintop, the archaeologists continue to look for a shrine to Pan – god of mountain wilds – that historical texts suggest might be nearby. (ANI)
