Imran blasts PPP govt for taking dictation from US

Islamabad, May 8 (ANI): Taking on the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government, cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan has criticised the country’s leadership for taking dictation from the United States.

Addressing a public rally in Pabbi, Imran said the Gilani government has failed completely in addressing the issues facing the country.

“The rulers are taking dictation from the US and are unable to pursue people-friendly policies,” Imran said.

“The present government has surpassed the former ruler General Pervez Musharraf in appeasing the US,” he added.

Commenting on the failed Times Square bombing plot, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief said it was an attempt by the US to malign Pakistan’s image.

“Faisal Shahzad has nothing to do with Pakistan as he is a US citizen and got education there. The US was using the failed bombing plot by Faisal to malign Pakistan,” The News quoted Imran, as saying. (ANI)

Don’t link terrorism with Islam: Imran Khan

Lahore, July 5 (ANI): Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has said that terrorism should not be linked with Islam.

Talking to media persons after visiting Jamia Naeemia to express grief over the assassination of country’s top religious scholar Sarfaraz Naeemi here, Khan termed the suicide bombings as a ‘political issue.’

“No religion can allow suicide bombing. There is no solution to this problem in Islam. The suicide bombing is an entirely political issue,” The Daily Times quoted Khan, as saying.

He criticized the PPP-led government for towing the lines of the United States, and said that the extremism in Pakistan could not be rooted out until the US continues its operation in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan is heading towards disaster as the ruling political leadership is in pursuit of dollars for their personal gains. The growing extremism in Pakistan cannot be curbed as long as US stays in Afghanistan,” the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief said.

Khan said he is sure that mid-term polls will be held in the country, but added that even the polls would not be able to pull Pakistan out from the current turbulent situation. (ANI)

All parties’ conference divided on supporting Pak Army action in Swat

Islamabad, May 19 (ANI): An all-parties conference (APC), which vowed to unite the nation against the insurgency in Swat and Malakand, is clearly divided in providing support to Pakistan’s armed forces for the protection of the lives and property of citizens.

The APC in a 16-point resolution drafted by PPP leader Raza Rabbani asked the government to implement a resolution passed last October during a joint sitting of parliament and subsequent recommendations by a parliamentary committee on national security.

Surprisingly, there was no specific mention of the Taliban in the resolution, which reaffirmed to protect and defend the constitution and sovereignty of Pakistan. It called for the establishment of the writ of the state.

In Clause 5 of a government-prepared draft, it was proposed to endorse the role of the armed and security forces in the current situation, but Pakistan Muslim League-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain sought an amendment in the draft, and proposed support for the “positive role of the armed and security forces of Pakistan.”

Besides the government, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement supported this proposal, the Daily Times reports.

Sources said the PML-N, JUI-F, JUI-Sami, Jamait Ulema-e-Pakistan-Noorani, Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and some other smaller parties opposed the proposal, and said they would not agree to any clause supporting military action.

“If you do not delete this clause from the draft, we will walk out from the APC,” they threatened.

The clause was deleted from the draft. These parties agreed that the APC might pass a resolution to support the constitution and the writ of the government, in addition to supporting the efforts aimed at the welfare of IDPs.

“This concession was, in fact, given to the government as a face saving gesture,” the sources said. (ANI)

Taliban pose as ‘Robin Hoods’, poor Pakistanis hope Sharia will transform society

Lahore, Apr 28 (ANI): The Taliban have been promoting themselves as Islamic Robin Hoods, defending the rural poor from the corrupt and oppressive ruling elite.

Their message has resonated in the countryside where the culture is deeply conservative and the people desperately poor, the CNN has said on Sunday.

In farmlands just 24 kilometres from Islamabad, Mohammed Daoud – whose family of seven survive on Rs 4,000 a month he and his 15-year old son earn by selling buffalo milk – told CNN, “Justice is only for people who have money. We are illiterate, but we are hoping that with sharia law, our lives will get better.”

Two months ago, Daoud said, the government had bulldozed his family’s house, because they were illegally squatting on property they did not own.

There is widespread hope, the CNN noted, that adopting a code of law based on the holy Quran will transform a society where corruption is rampant and where at least a quarter of the population live below the poverty line.

“It’s systematic,” said Amnesty International’s Sam Zarifi, “the Taliban move into an area, they use local existing resentments. They often go in with the guise of being Robin Hoods. They scare away local thieves, they impose very, very quick justice, very harsh justice, and initially in some places they are even welcomed.”

“Every part of the country should have sharia, like in Saudi Arabia,” an Islamabad farmer told CNN. “Then poor and rich people will be equal.”

“We love the Taliban,” announced one Pashtun farmer.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf chief Imran Khan summed up his response to the Taliban by saying, “The poorer section of society is joining them… this is now developing into a battle between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’.”

“What the Taliban are giving them is cheap – in fact, free – accessible justice at the village level,” he added. “This is what Pakistan should be doing for its own people.” (ANI)
