“In-house” tennis tournament helping Pak cricketers relax, keep fit during ICC T20WC

Islamabad, May 14 (ANI): The Pakistan cricket team, which is just a couple of steps away from retaining the ICC World T20 Championship in the West Indies, has adopted a unique way of keeping itself fit and also avoid boredom during the tournament.

Sources close to the team have revealed that players are having a tennis tournament of their own which is keeping them engrossed off the field, thus ensuring that there were no distractions and squabbles during the tour.

Players have formed doubles teams and have been competing with each other throughout the Caribbean tour.

Salman Butt has Kamran Akmal as his partner, while Umar Akmal has paired up with fast bowler Mohammad Sami. Skipper Shahid Afridi plays alongside his Karachi teammate Fawad Alam, and Mohammed Sami has joined Khalid Latif, PakPassion.net reports.

“Tennis has been a good way of the boys bonding. They have had some good fun on the tennis court and it”s definitely helped with their fitness and stamina levels. I would say they were pretty cool and laid back on the tennis court, rather like Roger Federer, instead of the firebrand John McEnroe. The pressure can get quite intense and these sort of fun activities definitely have helped the boys,” sources close to the team said.

They also revealed that the team of Afridi-Alam and Kamran-Salman are vying with each other for the top ranking in the tournament, which would continue till the end of the T20 championship.

Wonder whether this love for tennis of Pakistani cricketers has anything to do with Shoaib Malik’s wedding with Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza. (ANI)

Pak team can retain T20 title with fans’, media’s support: Afridi

Karachi, Apr.24 (ANI): Pakistan T20 captain Shahid Afridi has said that his squad is all geared up for defending the World T20 Championship in the West Indies, adding that it needed support of both people of the country and the media.

Afridi said his boys are well prepared to tackle world’s best teams during the coveted tournament but they needed fans support to transform their talent and will into performance on the field.

“My team and I are geared up to, tactically and technically, live up to the expectations of the nation for accomplishing the task of winning in the West Indies,” Afridi said in an interview prior to departure to Caribbean.

The 15-member Pakistan contingent would leave on Saturday (today) and reach St. Lucia via Dubai and London.

“Without the prayers of the nation and supporters across the world, the Pakistan cricket team cannot achieve anything. Besides playing patriotically for Pakistan we need support of countrymen and the media. My appeal to the national media is to go for healthy criticism while keeping Pakistan’s interest above everything,” The Dawn quoted Afridi, as saying.

Afridi denied being under any pressure to perform, and stressed that players would have to lift their fielding standards if they have to repeat last year’s success.

“Fielding is crucial area in this fastest version of the game, and a lot of hard work was done to raise the standard. We are ready give our best and rest with Allah,” he said.

Afridi said his team has good mix of youth and experience that can create trouble for even the world’s best teams.

“T20 cricket is altogether different. We got a lot of firepower in our batting.
We have experienced Misbah-ul-Haq, Abdul Razzaq, young Umar Akmal, Khalid Latif and Salman Butt,” he said. (ANI)

Pak skipper Younis Khan fractures finger

Benoni (South Africa), Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan cricket team’s Champions Trophy dreams suffered a major set back when captain Younis Khan fractured his finger during a warm-up match against Sri Lanka here.

Doctors have advised Khan complete rest for the next three days. It is unsure whether he will be playing in the next two practice games on Saturday and Sunday.

Notwithstanding Khan’s injury, Pakistan, however, trounced Sri Lanka by 108 runs in the first warm-up match ahead of eight nation tournament.

The Pakistan team is staying in Johannesburg’s Santon Sun Hotel while in South Africa.

Team manager Yawar Saeed has expressed satisfaction over the security arrangement.

Pak cricket team manager to quit after Champions Trophy

Karachi, Sep.17 (ANI): Controversial Pakistan cricket team manager, Yawar Saeed, has said that he would quit from his post after the ICC Champions Trophy.

Interacting with media persons before leaving for South Africa, Saeed said he has already informed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt about his decision.

“I wanted to step down after we returned from the tour of Sri Lanka. But the chairman asked me to continue for the Champions Trophy. Since the Champions Trophy is a big event and there is lot of work involved in it for the manager specially while dealing with the media, I accepted this last assignment as manager,” Saeed said.

The 74 year old cricket official said that he wanted to devote more time to his family and his business and that is why he has decided to step down.

“I have managed the national team on several tours many of them very successful ones. So there is really no real desire left to be manager anymore. But I am always willing to serve Pakistan cricket in any other capacity,” The Dawn quoted Saeed, as saying.

He also refused reports regarding altercations between him and the board or the players.

‘There are absolutely no problems between me and the board or with the players. I have managed some of the top players and they have always been respectful towards me. It has been a rewarding experience,” Saeed added.

Saeed has been facing criticism for his way of working and his old age. He came under attack especially after the way he handled the controversy regarding the reports about the presence of Indian bookies inside the hotel where the Pakistani team was staying during the recent Sri Lanka series. Pak hypnotist vows to change KKR’s fortunes, writes letter to SRK

Islamabad, Aug.30 (ANI): After having helped the Pakistan cricket team win the ICC World T20 Championship, famous psychotherapist and hypnotist Maqbool ‘Max’ Babri has expressed his interest in holding training sessions for the troubled Indian Premier League (IPL) team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to change its fortunes.

Babri has written a letter to KKR owner Shahrukh Khan and the team’s former captain Sourav Ganguly’s brother, Snehashish Ganguly, expressing his desires to be KKR’s ‘mental’coach and ‘thought manager’ for the third season of the IPL.

“I will very much like to be a part of your team as a thought manager and mind coach. People think I am a magician, but I must confess that I am not a magician but certainly what I do appears to be like magic and transforms people to really excel in what they do and makes them happy and buoyant,” Babri stated in his letter.

Interestingly, Babri had predicted that Pakistan, which was considered underdogs in the tournament, would win the T20 World Cup after spending six days with the team ahead of the event.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had appointed Babri to help players cope up with pressure and perform well in the T20 World Cuo after the team’s dismal show in previous events and lack of international exposure due the refusal of foreign teams to visit Pakistan citing security reasons, The Nation reports.

Babri is regarded highly in the Pakistan team, with former coach Geoff Lawson describing him as a ‘terrific asset’ for the squad. (ANI)

Pak team manager “disappointed and frustrated over under performance” in Lanka series

Islamabad, Aug.18 (ANI): Disappointed over the disastrous tour of Sri Lanka, Pakistan cricket team’s manager Yawar Saeed has admitted that the team under-performed during the recently concluded series.

“Yes I’m disappointed and frustrated with the overall performance. It was an under par performance,” Saeed said.

When asked about the match fixing allegations during the series, Saeed told PakPassion.net that all stories regarding the issue were baseless.

“There was nothing untoward regarding the players, they behaved impeccably. I spoke to all of the players and instructed them not to associate themselves with any individuals whom they were not familiar with and they followed my instructions. I have no idea whether any bookies were stopping at the hotel or not,” Saeed said.

Saeed said he has given his report to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the match fixing issue, and was pleased to know that the apex cricketing council endorsed his views that no Pakistani cricketer was involved in the issue.

“I gave my report to the ICC and they investigated matters and I’m pleased that they concluded that there was no such incident involving Pakistan players and any bookmakers,” he said. (ANI)

PCB set to revamp Pak team management following Sri Lankan debacle

Karachi, Aug. 8 (ANI): Following the Pakistan cricket team’s dismal Sri Lankan tour, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to overhaul the team management.

The News quoted PCB sources, as saying that the team’s manager and assistant manager are likely to be sacked, while the coach and captain will be asked for an explanation once the team returns home on August 13.

Pakistan lost the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka 0-2. It is the first time ever that Pakistan have lost a Test series in Sri Lanka. Continuing the rout, Sri Lanka won the five-match one-day series against Pakistan 3-0.

Another question that the team management may find difficult to answer is-reports surfacing that bookies tried to contact the Pakistani players in Galle and Colombo during the Test series, the report said.

Team manager Yawar Saeed had confirmed the reports initially, but after getting a dressing down from the PCB top brass, he denied them, it added.

According to sources, Saeed, 73, was made team manager because of his proximity with PCB chairman Ijaz Butt, but his failure to deal with sensitive issues has made it clear that he is not the right man for the job.

Similarly, assistant manager Mohammad Ahmed has also been asked to quit the post.

Some influential officials in the PCB governing board are also gunning for the resignation of Intikhab Alam, the team’s coach, the paper said.

Some critics believe that captain Younis Khan is also responsible for the spate of defeats in Sri Lanka as he has failed to unite the team even after a stunning title-winning triumph in the ICC World Twenty20 championship in England last month, it added.

Sources, however, said that the fate of the duo will be decided after Butt holds separate meetings with Intikhab and Younis next week. (ANI)

Pak’s Twenty20 World Cup triumph victory a deja vu

London, June 22 (ANI): Pakistan captain Younis Khan drew a parallel between his team’s Twenty20 World Cup triumph at Lords’ with Imran Khan’s 1992 World Cup victory.

“I’m the second Khan,” Younus said, addressing a post victory press conference.

Pakistan team’s fight back story in the 16-day Twenty20 championship mirrors that of 1992 team led by Imran Khan, who famously urged his players to fight “as if you were a cornered tiger.”

On Sunday, a delighted Imran Khan warmly congratulated Pakistan cricket team over their “tremendous performance” against Sri Lanka.

“Our cricketers did us proud,” The Nation quoted Khan, as saying.

Imran Khan, who had just landed in Houston, Texas, from Dallas said the Pakistani cricketers, despite their isolation from international cricket, fought courageously and came from behind to clinch the World Cup.

Coach Alam says ‘mentally tough’ Pakistan ready for World Twenty20

Karachi, May 25 (ANI): Pakistan cricket team coach Intikhab Alam has said that the national squad is both mentally and physically fit to take on its opponents in next month’s World Twenty20 Championship in England.

Pakistan reached the final of the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007, but fell to India in the title clash.

Alam told The News that this time he is hopeful that Pakistan would go all the way to the title.

“One of our primary tasks is to make the players mentally tough. Mental toughness is one of the key elements needed to win a major title and we believe that the players can improve in that area with help from steps like having a psychologist around for a while,” he added.

“Our aim is to win the title and England and thankfully our preparations are on the right track,” he stressed.

Pakistan warmed up for the World Twenty20 by comprehensively beating Australia in a one-off Twenty20 International in Dubai on May. Later, the national cricketers attended a conditioning camp in Bhurban and then played a series of practice games in Lahore.

The players will now compete in the RBS National Twenty20 Cup getting underway in Lahore from Monday.

The Pakistan team players will only compete in matches on the first three days of the five-day contest.

“We have decided to give the boys a two-day rest because its also equally important to rest and rejuvenate,” said Alam. (ANI)

Qadir rubbishes reports about rift with Younis Khan

Lahore, May 13 (ANI): The Chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team, Abdul Qadir, has rubbished media reports which claimed that he and captain Younis Khan are not on talking terms, as the latter is unhappy over the selection of the squad for the forthcoming ICC Twenty20 World Cup.

“These reports are not true. It is not true that we are not on talking terms. I have been in touch with Younis on a regular basis over selection matters. There are no serious differences between us,” The Daily Times quoted Qadir, as saying.

“Everyone has a different view in selection matters and the purpose of taking the captain and coach into confidence is to reach a consensus after proper discussions,” Qadir added.

Earlier, reports about sour relations between Qadir and Khan were splashed in the media after the captain used his ‘veto’ power to finalise the team for the Twenty20 World Cup to be played in England in June.

Qadir, reportedly said that the captain would be responsible for the team’s performance in England.

According to sources, he wanted names of two other players to be included in the squad, while Khan pressed for two uncapped players Shahzaib Hassan and Mohammad Aamir.

Reports about differences between Qadir and Khan are not new, as the two had also shared different opinions over the selection of opener Ahmad Shahzad for the one-day series against Australia. (ANI)

Younis, Misbah lead two bitterly divided camps inside Pak cricket team

Lahore, May 9 (ANI): There seems to be an unending list of controversies and internal scuffles in the Pakistan cricket team, as reports spilling out of the team’s dressing room suggest that there are two factions of players in the national squad.

Sources privy to the team’s dressing room have revealed that national side is bitterly divided into two camps of captain Younis Khan and vice-captain Misbah-ul-Haq.

There is a complete lack of trust and unity between these two camps, The Nation reports.

It is also believed that it was this divide of players which resulted in the team’s 3-2 drubbing by a depleted Australian squad in the recently concluded Dubai one-day international series.

The divide among the players was quite visible during the UAE tour, where the two groups allegedly stayed distant from each other.

It was also evident that while Younis Khan supported Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Shahid Afridi, and a few younger players like Fawad Alam, Misbah -ul-Haq lobbied with former captain Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Salman Butt and Rao Iftikhar Anjum.

Questions are also being raised over coach Intikhab Alam’s inability to build a cohesive unit ahead of an important event such as the Twenty20 World Cup.

Alam is also being criticized for his laid back attitude, as he is more interested in pleasing the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) top brass, rather than sorting out the problems within his team and bridging gaps between the players. (ANI)

Government, PCB responsible for 2011 World Cup shift : Waqar Younis

Lahore, Apr.21 (ANI): Former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis has held the Government and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responsible for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to shift 2011 World Cup matches from the country.

“We are helpless under prevailing circumstances that we can do nothing much against this ruling, because PCB is the one which let the ICC pronounce this ruling,” The News quoted Younis, as saying.

Younis said following the terror attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, security cover for foreign players is questionable in the country.

He said that the PCB must start a tournament on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to win back the confidence of other cricket playing nations.

On chances of Pakistan defeating Australia in the Dubai one-day international series which will be beginning from April 22, Younis said it is the best opportunity for Pakistan to crush the World Champions.

“This is the best chance that Pakistan cricket team has met to defeat gigantic Australia as national team is much balanced this time,” he said.

Younis added that besides the weather conditions, pitches in UAE would also offer help to Pakistan. (ANI)

Pak will rely heavily on captain Younus Khan in UAE series: Alam

Karachi, Apr.13 (ANI): Pakistan cricket team coach Intikhab Alam is banking upon captain Younus Khan to succeed against Australia in the forthcoming UAE series.

“For me, Younus will be our key man. He is such a positive man, a true leader who has injected a much-needed team spirit among the boys,” Alam said referring to Khan’s forecast of a five-nil Australian white wash in the series.

Alam said the middle order batsman was the mainstay of team’s batting line-up, and hoped he would lead by example in the five match series starting April 22.

When asked to comment on the pressure on Khan to perform and lead the side too, Alam said the captain was a cool customer in the hardest of circumstances.

“He is not the sort of man who will crumble under pressure. The point is that he doesn’t come under pressure whatever the circumstances. That’s one of his most precious qualities,” The News quoted Alam, as saying.

He expressed hope that other senior players in the team such as Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar would also carry out their responsibilities accordingly.

“Afridi is still a match-winner, and Akhtar, too, can work wonders on his day,” he added. (ANI)

“I don’t want to be a captain for the namesake only, but want to do things in my own way,” Khan said.

“I would like to have my own team and like-minded people in the team management,” he added. (ANI)
