Jet Airways deadlock continues, flights cancelled

New Delhi, Sep 9 (ANI): Jet Airways flights were cancelled for a second consecutive day on Wednesday following a row between the airline management and its pilots over the sacking of two of their senior colleagues.

The management has sacked five more pilots, bringing the total number of those fired to ten. owever, the striking pilots are seeking a compromise formula, as a meeting will be held between them and Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal.

Earlier, Goyal said inconvenienced passengers were being accommodated on other foreign and domestic airlines in the country.

“We are trying our best, we are transferring passengers to a lot of domestic carriers in India, and lot of foreign airlines in India so that we minimise the inconvenience to customers… We are willing to sit with them (pilots) and to follow certain guidelines and rules and not create inconvenience to customers and passengers,” Goyal told TIMES NOW.

Jet Airways had also sought the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) intervention to resolve the crisis. Last month, Jet Airways had terminated the services of two of its senior most pilots, saying their services were not required after both formed a trade union body within the company.

A conciliatory meeting was called on August 31 between the Jet Airways management and the union, which claims to have representation of over 650 pilots. Jet Airways has 1000 pilots on its rolls.

Meanwhile, Air India has come to the rescue of the Indian cricket team scheduled to go to Colombo today by a Jet Airways flight for the tri-nation one-day series.

Air India will fly a special plane to carry the Indian cricket team to Colombo. The plane will take off from Chennai and go to Bangalore to take Indian captain M S Dhoni and leg spinner Harbhajan Singh before finally leaving for Colombo. (ANI)

“Blight” may play spoilsport for farmers’ hope of good crop in Punjab

Amritsar, Aug.31 (ANI): Punjab farmers were full of optimism of harvesting a bumper crop of paddy despite a delayed monsoon, but now they fear crop damage due to attack of “Blight”, a bacterial disease.

Worried farmers allege that the agriculture department is not guiding them how to protect their crop from Blight. owever, at several places, the farmers, who had transplanted paddy, which was in good shape earlier, seem to be fighting a fast losing battle because of the widespread attack of “Blight”.

In various affected villages in the border districts of Amritsar and Gurdaspur, the farmers today estimate nearly 50 percent of damage to paddy due to “Blight”, if it’s not controlled in time.

“The disease appeared as yellowish green stripes running from tip downwards and the affected leaf started drying from the margins. Since most of the farmers are unaware about the remedies so agriculture department should come forward to educate the farmers to tackle this problem,” said Jagdev Singh, one of the farmers.

Mangdev Singh, Sarpanch (village head) of Chiina Pati Village said, “Blight has dashed our hopes. We were expecting very good returns from paddy. In all the 500 acres of village paddy was transplanted. “Blight” attack has started in patches. If we fail to control, this could cause damage of al the crop here.

Singh said that they have contacted the department. Though the Agricultural Department accepts the damage to crops, it is not prepared to quantify it as yet.

In Amritsar district alone, of the nearly 183,000 hectares of land, Basmati was transplanted in about 90,000 hectares of land and in the rest of the farming land other variety of paddy was transplanted.

According to Gurdeep Singh, an Agriculture Development Officer, the disease has been noticed in all varieties of paddy grown in the areas of border belt.

“Since the disease develops more in high humid conditions, farmers should not allow stagnation of water in the fields.

Farmers should not spray pesticides to control the disease, as these are not effective against it,” said Gurdeep Singh. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Pakistanis outraged over Minority Affairs Ministry’s failed promises

Karachi, Aug. 30 (ANI): Pakistan’s Minority Affairs ministry has left many people outraged after they found out that cheques distributed to them by the ministry were not worth 5,000 rupees as claimed, but just 1,000 rupees.

On Saturday, 200 people from different communities had gathered at Sindh Minister for Minority Affairs Dr Mohan Lal’s office to receive the cheques while chanting slogans in his favour, the Daily Times reports.

Addressing the distribution ceremony, Lal had said that his ministry is trying to help the religious minorities and these cheques were a part of the first phase of offering relief while similar projects are in the pipeline.owever, one such claimant Kaishi complained that she was told by the bank authorities that the cheque was not for 5,000-rupees.

“He (Lal) clearly told us that the cheques are worth Rs 5,000 each but we were actually given cheques worth Rs 1,000 only and those can also just be cashed at the bank in Hyderabad,” said Kaishi.

An outraged Kaisi soon found out that the ministry had fooled all the other cheque receivers as well, most of whom were widows.

“We need almost Rs 1,000 just to get to Hyderabad to cash the cheque besides we were told that these cheques were worth Rs 5,000,” said Gomi, another widow from Jogi Moar Colony.

These women had walked to the minister of minority affairs’ office almost every day for a year so that they may get some sort of financial assistance from the ministry and every time they were sent home empty handed with a lot of promises.

On being contacted, Lal’s casually said that these women would be compensated during the next phase.

“Actually we had already distributed a huge amount and there were not enough funds to issue cheques worth 5,000 rupees to these women,” he added. (ANI)

Clues to gigantism provided by family in Borneo Mountains

Washington, August 22 (ANI): An indigenous family living in a mountainous area of Malaysian Borneo has helped Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) scientists to discover information about genetic mutations associated with acromegaly, a form of gigantism that often results in enlarged hands, feet, and facial features.

The information could lead to better screening for the disease, which most often results from a benign pituitary gland tumor that can be deadly if left untreated, but which is difficult to detect until later stages when features become pronounced.

Researchers located a 31-member aboriginal family that included individuals with acromegaly living in a mountainous region of Borneo, Malaysia, when the effects of the family patriarch’s growing pituitary tumor necessitated medical treatment.

A medical team including VARI Distinguished Scientific Investigator Bin Tean Teh, and staff from the Department of Medicine at the University of Malaya Medical Centre and the Department of Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Malaysia subsequently traveled to the family’s village several times to collect blood samples for testing.

“Researchers had recently found a mutation in the AIP gene associated with acromegaly, but we found that several family members who didn’t have visible symptoms of acromegaly had this mutation as well,” said Dr. The.

“This increases the importance of screening for families with cases of acromegaly since anyone could be a carrier. On one side of the family, at least two generations carried the gene before someone showed any symptoms,” he added.

The later stages of acromegaly often produce enlarged hands and feet, protruding brows and lower jaws, thick voice and slowed speech from swelling of vocal cords, and other symptoms.

When diagnosed, the tumor and entire pituitary gland are usually removed, followed by hormone therapy for the rest of the patient’s life. owever, because the progression of the disease is so gradual, it is difficult to detect. If left unchecked, patients can die from complications such as heart or kidney failure.

Sok Kean Khoo, VARI Research Scientist and lead author of the study, led researchers in scanning DNA in the family’s blood to find other factors that might explain why only some family members with the genetic mutation had visible symptoms of the disease.

They found regions on a few chromosomes that might lead to further insight. The sooner we know how and why people are affected differently by this disease, the sooner we can help families who have it,” said Dr. Teh. (ANI)

Generation Y exercise less than previous generations Down Under

Melbourne, Mar 2 (ANI): Australia’s Generation Y is leading a more sedentary lifestyle than the older generations, reveals a new survey.

Researchers from the University of Sydney looked at four cross-generational and national surveys from 1990 to 2005, and found that Gen Y was exercising less and getting fatter at an early age.

According to Associate Professor Margaret Allman-Farinelli, they are not only exercising less than older generations did at the same age, they are also doing less exercise than older people are doing today.

The study showed that women now aged in their 20s – Generation Y re estimated to be doing just 15 minutes of leisure-time physical activity per day.

owever, most of the baby boomers were exercising for the recommended 30 minutes daily.

“Clearly Generation Y needs to lift its game,” News.com.au quoted Allman-Farinelli as saying.

“The results indicate that younger Australians are living increasingly more sedentary lifestyles than their predecessors, with less time spent in physical exercise than people of retirement age,” she added.

While baby boomer generation is considered to be those born during the spike in birth rates recorded after World War II, Generation Y is said to include those born from the late 1970s to as recently as 2000.

The study suggests that baby boomers and earlier generations were born into a world “before the television, computer and widespread motor vehicle usage, so … their everyday physical activity energy expenditure was probably greater.”

“Individuals born after 1970 entered a high-tech society with few demands on physical activity,” said the researchers.

Moreover, longer working hours and fewer opportunities for physical activity in the workplace could provide another explanation.

The study has been published in the British Journal of Nutrition.(ANI)

Sonia Gandhi for separate Telangana state in principle

Secunderabad, Mar 1 (ANI): Congress President Sonia Gandhi has said that her party is in favour of creating a separate Telangana state in principle.

Addressing a public meeting here on Saturday evening, Gandhi said: “As far as the issue of creating a separate Telangana state is concerned, Congress party is not against the creation of new state. But this issue involves some concerns, which should be sorted out through dialogue and consensus.”

Ever since 1969, the proponents of separate Telangana have felt that their region has always remained neglected, exploited and backward.

In 2004 Assembly and Parliament elections, Congress party and TRS had an electoral alliance in Telangana region with the promise of separate Telangana State.

The Congress came to power in the state and formed coalition government at the centre.owever, in September 2006, the TRS withdrew support for the Congress on the grounds of indecision by the government over the delivery of its electoral promise to create Telangana.

Since then, the Congress has been under great pressure from the opposition to take a clear stand on the issue.

Gandhi, who was on a two-day tour of Andhra Pradesh addressed the rally for 20 minutes.

Without naming anyone, Gandhi said some forces were creating obstacles in India’s path of progress.

“We all know that some people are envious of our rapid development and economic growth. These people are trying to create obstacles in the path of our progress either through militant strikes or any other mean. But no one can stop India from progressing, as the country is capable of meeting any challenge,” she said.

Commending Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Gandhi said: “Andhra Pradesh’s story of achieving spectacular development is being talked about everywhere and Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy is being praised for his efforts.”

“This success story of the past five years is important because the previous non-Congress Government ruled for nine years and had not been able to achieve anything, or record any development. I have seen the difficulties that the people here faced due to the lackadaisical attitude of the Telugu Desam Party,” she added.

She also listed her party’s achievements in the last five years and claimed that the Congress is the only party that does not contest elections to come to power, but because it wants to serve the people.

Remembering the Congress forefathers she said, “If it was not for Jawaharlal Nehru who thought of a mixed economy, we would have been in a different situation.

If Indira Gandhi did not have the foresight of nationalising banks, what would have happened to all the private banks today? If Rajiv Gandhi had not thought of revolutionising information technology in the country, we would have been lagging far behind. The Congress has always thought of the poor, weaker sections.” (ANI)
