Potter may topple Bond as top-grossing movie franchise of all time

New York, July 15 (ANI): The ‘Harry Potter’ film series seems set to topple James Bond movies as top-grossing franchise in box office history.

The last five ‘Harry Potter’ films are said to have raked in a total of 4.48 dollars billion around the globe, while the James Bond movies stand at 5 billion dollars over the course of 22 films.

According to Variety.com, the ‘Harry Potter’ series is expected to overtake the British spy thrillers by the end of this month, after the latest film in the former series hits the theatres on July 15, reports the New York Daily News.

Rick Butler, the Chief Operating Officer of Fandango, said: “It’s our fastest ticket-seller since ‘The Dark Knight,’ and ‘Harry’ may eventually outpace Batman in advance ticket sales.” (ANI)

Australia needs to win Ashes to retain number-one ranking in Tests

Dubai, July 7 (ANI): Australia and England go head to head in the mouth-watering Ashes series in Cardiff on Wednesday with Ricky Ponting’s side needing to win the series to retain its number-one ranking in the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship table.

Although a drawn series will be enough for Australia to retain the Ashes, thanks to its 5-0 victory in the last series in its backyard in 2006-07, this outcome would drop it to second place for the first time since the current rankings system was introduced in 2003.

Today’s championship table may reflect a nine-point lead for Australia over South Africa but that lead will narrow to just two ratings points when the annual update is carried out on 1 August and all series completed before August 2006 fall off the table.

These results include Australia’s back to back 2-0 and 3-0 wins over South Africa in 2005-06, hence reducing the gap significantly.

As such, when the annual update is carried out on 1 August Australia will drop four points to 124 ratings points while South Africa will gain three ratings points to rise to 122 ratings points. England, which currently sits on 101 ratings points, will slip to 99 ratings points.

England could overtake Australia at the end of this series. But to make that happen, it will have a create history and win every Test, something which no English side has done in a series of five or more Tests since the start of the Ashes over a century ago. (ANI)

Murray keen to overtake Federer in world rankings

London, May 24 (ANI): The world’s third best and Britain’s top tennis player Andy Murray has set himself an ambitious target for this year’s French Open – replacing Roger Federer as the world No 2.

The Scot goes into the clay-court Grand Slam event hoping to reach the second week for the first time.

Murray, who faces Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela in today’s first round, admitted: “That’s what I want to try to do here.

“From the start of the tournament, I’ve obviously got a lot to gain and unless Federer wins the tournament, he’s going to lose points. I could do it here at this tournament,” the News of The World quoted Murray, as saying.

Unless Federer loses in the first week, Murray needs to reach the semi-finals in Paris to overtake him. Just 12 months ago, Murray was ranked at No 12 and had never reached a Grand Slam quarter-final.

But, after making the last eight at Wimbledon, he went on a stunning run and reached the final of the US Open. Six tournament victories since August have lifted Murray above Novak Djokovic to No 3 – the highest ranking by any Brit since the system was introduced in 1973.

But passing Federer, who is just one short of the record of 14 Grand Slam titles held by Pete Sampras, would be something extra-special.

Murray added: “When you get closer to doing something like that – to overtake Roger Federer in the rankings – it’s big news. (ANI)

Hamilton stripped of Australian GP podium

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton was stripped of his third place at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix after stewards ruled on Thursday that he and McLaren had deliberately misled them.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said in a statement at the Malaysian Grand Prix that Hamilton and his team had both been excluded from the classification of last weekend’s race.

Toyota’s Italian Jarno Trulli, who had been handed a 25 second penalty and demoted to 12th place at a post-race hearing for overtaking Hamilton during the second safety car period, was reinstated in third.

Stewards had reopened their enquiry on Thursday after “new elements” emerged and summoned Hamilton to appear before them at the Sepang circuit.

Their verdict was that “Hamilton and … McLaren Mercedes acted in a manner prejudicial to the conduct of the event by providing evidence deliberately misleading to the stewards at the hearing on Sunday.”

They ruled that there had been a breach of the international sporting code.

With Hamilton’s team mate Heikki Kovalainen failing to finish in Melbourne, McLaren are now in the same situation as champions Ferrari with no points.

TRULLI THIRD

Toyota had served notice of a protest after the race in Melbourne but decided not to proceed on Wednesday because they felt there was no chance of overturning the stewards’ decision.

Trulli, who had slid off and been passed by Hamilton while behind the safety car, said after the race that he had little choice but to overtake the Briton again.

“When the safety car came out towards the end of the race, Lewis Hamilton passed me but soon after he suddenly slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road,” he said in a team statement at the time.

“I thought he had a problem so I overtook him as there was nothing else I could do.”

Hamilton had told Speed TV that Trulli went wide onto the grass at the second to last corner.

“I was forced to go by. I slowed down as much as I could. I was told to let him back past, but I mean … I don’t know if that’s the regulations, and if it isn’t, then I should have really had third,” said the Briton.

It was not clear what he had told the stewards in the original enquiry and the driver would not elaborate in a news conference at Sepang before the new verdict was known.

In a separate development, Red Bull’s German Sebastian Vettel could have his 10 place penalty on the Malaysian starting grid reviewed.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said Vettel had been asked to discuss the penalty with Alan Donnelly, the FIA’S permanent non-voting chairman of the stewards.

Hamilton, McLaren team can be expelled from Formula One

London, Apr 3 (ANI): World Champion Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren team could be expelled from Formula One after being found guilty of lying and cheating.

Sanctions include expulsion from races, the championship or fines such as the one imposed in September 2007 when McLaren Mercedes were found guilty in an industrial espionage case.

Hamilton and his team were yesterday stripped of the six points they scored for his third place in Australia on Sunday after race stewards reopened their inquiry into an incident near the end of the race.

McLaren deny deliberately misleading the stewards, but say they will not appeal, the Daily Express reported.

A meeting was held at the Sepang circuit, where F1 are gathered for Sunday’s second race of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The stewards insisted new evidence had come to their attention and after hearing again from Hamilton and the team manager, Dave Ryan, their verdict was damning for driver and team.

The new conclusion was that they had provided evidence, which was “deliberately misleading” at the original hearing after the Melbourne race.

They also said that Hamilton and the team had acted in a manner prejudicial to the conduct of the event. It all stemmed from an incident near the end of the Australian race when Hamilton overtook a Toyota to take third place but then, unsure if that was legal, the team told him to let Trulli past again.

Hamilton slowed to snail’s pace and Jarno Trulli went past but as it was during a safety period when overtaking is banned, the Italian was relegated after standing on the podium.

The mystery is why Hamilton and Ryan, when asked point-blank if an instruction had been given to let Trulli overtake again, both said no. Trulli said yesterday: “I told the truth and all I wanted was the truth.” (ANI)

Student’s bodyguard opens fire on ‘slow’ driver

In an example of the growing trigger-happy culture in NCR, three persons, including a Class XII student of a well-known private International Baccalaureate (IB) school, were involved in shooting a man in Gurgaon when he refused to let their car overtake his. The three have been charged with attempt to murder and arrested by the Gurgaon police.

The student, his driver and personal bodyguard -who were riding in a BMW car- forced the driver of an Indica to halt after he refused to give them way, assaulted him and finally the guard shot at him. According to the deputy commissioner of police (East) Jagdish Nagar, the incident occurred around 4.30 p.

m. when the Indica and BMW began to race each other.

The driver of the BMW, R.P. Pandey, repeatedly honked asking for a pass. Finally he overtook the Indica and forced its driver Vikram Singh to stop.

Soon, the class XII student, who is said to be the son of a well-known Delhi-based businessman and his private guard got down from their car and started thrashing the Indica driver. It was during this time, the gunman shot thrice at Singh from his pistol but missed the target, the DCP said.

Singh told police officials the BMW was speeding and the driver was driving very rashly. The DCP said that a criminal case under section 307 had been registered against the trio.

“In addition to this, we have also booked the bodyguard on charges of misuse of firearm under the Indian Arms Act,” Nagar added. The police have also confiscated the BMW car.

Talking to HT, the student said, “I was simply sitting in the car when the fight erupted. There is a taxi stand near the spot and when the two drivers were quarrelling, lot of drivers from the taxi stand gathered around and started stoning my car.

My bodyguard first fired a shot in the air and then fired two shots at the Indica car to scare the rowdy lot. All this while, I was sitting in the car and #8230; I don’t know why the police have implicated me in the case.

” Anil Kumar, the bodyguard, said, “It is my duty to protect the boy. I did not wish to kill anybody but fired only to scare the enraged lot.

” Complainant driver Vikram Singh said, “When the altercation started, this driver hurled abuses at me and went ahead. I responded with an abuse or two when this driver turned around and stopped his car near mine.

His bodyguard slapped me first, which prompted me to slap him in return. Soon his driver joined after which the bodyguard fired at me.

Luckily I escaped uninjured.”.

Lily Allen: Media attention makes me feel like a caged animal

London, Mar 28 (ANI): Lily Allen has revealed that the intense glare of paparazzi has left her feeling like a “caged animal”.

While in an exclusive interview with The Independent magazine, Allen, 23, expressed her relief after obtaining a court injunction that protects her from paparazzi harassment.

“I already know that it’s going to change my life … I’m beyond happy. It’s like I’ve been allowed to have success and a life, because sometimes it makes you feel like a caged animal,” she said.

Few weeks back, the singer was snapped kicking a photographer who had apparently driven into the back of her car.

Allen said: “Seven cars had been chasing me since I left home. I turned into a T-junction and they all ran a red light, then tried to overtake on the inside. A woman had to slam the brakes on her car as they cut in. She had two children in the car, a baby in the back seat, a six-year-old in the front. I braked too, of course, and this guy ran into the back of me. I got out of the car. I was shaken up. There was a lot of force. I was really angry. I went up to him and said, you know, ‘What the f*** are you doing? You can’t do this’.

“Instead of talking to me like a decent human being would at a decent human level, he got his camera out and started taking pictures, and I just thought, ‘I’ve had it with the press’… It was mental. And I got back into the car and called my lawyer.” (ANI)

Beckham set to overtake Bobby Moore’s England cap record

London, Mar 28 (ANI): English midfielder David Beckham has only to make it onto the pitch against Slovenia today to get his 109th cap, and beat the record of Bobby Moore, regarded by many as England’s greatest player.

Beckham equalled Bobby Moore’s tally when he appeared in the friendly against Spain last month, but recently admitted he thought his days as a top-line player were over when manager Steve McClaren dumped him in 2006.

“I have had a lot of ups and downs in my career but being left out of the England squad was a big low. It knocked my confidence a lot and it affected me. I just assumed I wouldn’t play for my country again. They were playing well and I just thought: That’s it,” Beckham had said.

Now, he says: “The confidence is back that I can still play at this level. I went to LA to try something different and the game is still growing there. However, I was quite happy to get the Milan thing sorted. I have to be playing at the highest level to put me in a position to carry on getting picked for England.”

Stephanie Moore MBE, who set up the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research, told Sky News: “It will be a marvellous personal achievement. It will also be a testimony to his outstanding contribution to English and world football.”

“The fact that David generously donated the shirt he wore on his 108th cap to the Bobby Moore Fund is a mark of the man. His gesture will help us raise crucial funds for our globally respected bowel cancer research programme.”
“If Bobby were alive today I’m sure he would be the first to congratulate David,” the Sky News quoted her, as saying. (ANI)

China may overtake Japan as the world’s second largest economy in 2010

Beijing, Mar 10 (ANI): A research paper issued by the China Policy Institute of the University of Nottingham (UK) has revealed that China is likely to overtake Japan to become the world’s second largest economy, either this year or by 2010.

Yao Shujie, the author of the research paper told China Daily in a telephonic interview, “Right now, we don’t have figures for Japan’s GDP in 2008, but I think China may have already overtaken Japan last year.”

Shujie had predicted in 2007 that China would reach the second position in the world’s economic pecking order in 2018.

Considering the World Bank and IMF’s figures on China and Japan’s 2007 GDP and output growth rate of 2008, Shujie estimated that China and Japan’s GDP would reach 4.42 and 4.68 trillion dollars in 2008, respectively.

The research also shows US, Japan, Germany and the UK are not likely to recover to their 2007 output levels until 2011 or 2012, but China is expected to expand at seven to eight percent this year. (ANI)

Tiger Woods may never again dominate golf: Ernie Els

London, Mar 3 (ANI): Ernie Els reckons that Tiger Woods might never again dominate golf as he did before his latest injury.

Woods returned last week after an eight-month lay-off at the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona.

Tim Clark knocked him out in the second round and Els believes his knee may continue to hamper him.

Former world No.1 Els underwent similar surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in 2005, The Sun reported.

“My take is that Tiger will feel it. It’s only normal. I don’t care how good your rehab was, you’re going to feel it every now and again in your swing, especially in cold weather,” Els said.

“My knee was still swollen when I came back and it took another six months for it really to start feeling back to normal,” he added.

The South African has already tipped Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, 19, to become a future world No.1.
And Spain’s Sergio Garcia could overtake Woods in the rankings within a fortnight if he wins this week’s Honda Classic in Florida and finishes third or better next week at Doral. (ANI)

India can overtake Australia in ODI team rankings

Dubai, Mar.2 (ANI): India will be ranked second in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table if it wins its upcoming five-match series in New Zealand 5-0.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team currently lies in third position, some four ratings points behind second-placed Australia and five behind top team South Africa.

A clean sweep for India will put it ahead of Ricky Ponting’s men by a fraction of a point but it would remain just behind the Proteas in what would be an extraordinarily tightly packed leader board with one ratings point separating the top three ODI teams in world cricket.

For its part, New Zealand can move up to third ahead of India if it wins the series 4-1 or better but it will drop as low as sixth if it suffers a 5-0 defeat. (ANI)

Younus Khan becomes No.1 Test batsman after scoring triple century

Dubai, Feb 26 (ANI): Pakistan skipper Younus Khan has jumped six places to overtake S. Chanderpaul at the top of the ICC Test Player Rankings.

A triple-century from Pakistan’s new captain Younus Khan has earned him six places and put him on top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen for the first time in his career.

Younus batted for nearly 13 hours, facing 568 balls and hitting 27 fours and four sixes for his 313. He became just the third Pakistan player in history to get past the 300-run mark in a single Test innings after Hanif Mohammad (337 v West Indies at Bridgetown in 1958) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (329 v New Zealand at Lahore in 2002).

Chanderpaul is now in second spot with Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka in third.

It was tough going for the bowlers and this is reflected in the latest ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers. Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralidaran is still top, but the gap between him and South Africa’s Dale Steyn has now been cut from 43 ratings points to just 17.

There is no change in the ICC Player Rankings for Test all rounders with South Africa’s Jacques Kallis still out in front, followed by New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori in second and England’s Andrew Flintoff third. (ANI)

Beckham feels honoured to equal Bobby Moore’s most England appearances record

London, Feb. 12 (ANI): David Beckham has equaled former England skipper Bobby Moore’s record of 108 appearances, and has now vowed to try to overtake it.

“I have always dreamed of playing for England and to achieve this record is unbelievable. I’m honoured. Bobby Moore won the World Cup with England. He’s an icon and a legend. It is very humbling,” Becks declared despite a disappointing defeat to Spain.

The midfielder, 33, is hoping to secure a permanent move to AC Milan after completing his two-year stint with LA Galaxy, which should assist him to add to his England caps tally and go on to the 2010 World Cup.

“I hope to keep on playing for my country. Of course, I do. I still enjoy my football and, as long as that’s the case, I’ll keep on going. I don’t know where my future lies. I’ve expressed my feelings, so we’ll have to wait and see,” Beckham said.

The current England skipper is currently 18 short of breaking Peter Shilton’s overall caps record of 125 for England.

“I don’t know what the secret is. I’ve always said I would be honoured to be up there with the likes of Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore, ” he said when asked about the secret of his success. (ANI)

India drops to third in ODI rankings

Dubai, Feb.9 (ANI): India has slipped back to third in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table following defeat in the fifth and final match of its away series against Sri Lanka.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team had moved ahead of Australia and to within four ratings points of leader South Africa when it went 4-0 up in the series but a combination of Sri Lanka’s strong showing in the final ODI and Australia beating New Zealand in the third ODI of its ongoing five-match series has meant they have returned to third position.

That means that if India wins its series against New Zealand 5-0 it will move to 124 ratings points, which is not enough to overtake South Africa at the top.

In fact, by the current fixture schedule, only New Zealand can topple Graeme Smith and friends by the cut-off date of 1 April. But to do that the Black Caps need to win all seven of the remaining ODIs they will play before then, an ICC press release said.

The side that leads the listing on 1 April will be USD 175,000 richer while the runner-up will collect USD 75,000. The ongoing series in Australia and the upcoming one between New Zealand and India look set to determine where those pay-outs will end up.

At this stage, the best Australia and India can do is come second in the table. Even if Ricky Ponting’s team wins the remaining two matches against Daniel Vettori’s men it will stay behind South Africa by a fraction of a ratings point.(ANI)

South Africa not ready to handle No.1 mantle: Arthur

Sydney, Jan 29 (ANI): South African coach Mickey Arthur believes that being the No.1 ranked cricket nation is not an easy task, and his one-day side is not quite ready to deal with the pressure and expectations that comes along with it.

The Proteas can overtake Australia onto top spot on the one-day rankings with a win in Friday’s fifth and final one-dayer at the WACA Ground.

Arthur said his team, who lead the ODI series 3-1 is still in development mode, and would be better served by snaring the mantle later down the track.

“For me the number one ranking at the moment is too soon for this team in a developing phase. It would create a heap of expectation on a young one-day side. It would certainly have come just a little too soon for our side developing as a one-day unit,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Arthur, as saying.

“If we can get that down the line I’d be very happy. Then (if we can) insulate that by winning the World Cup I’d be even happier,” he said.

Arthur said the Proteas, who defeated Australia 2-1 in the Test series, had already begun preparations for next month’s return bout in South Africa.

“With success comes huge expectation. I think it’s probably the first time at home we are going to start as favourites against a side of the ilk of Australia, so it’s going to be interesting to see how we handle that tag and how we handle that in front of our fans … because it does bring added pressure,” he said.

When asked whether he was wary of a wounded Australian side gunning for revenge, Arthur replied: “Yeah I am. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t. I think Australia are really going to be up for the series.”

“It’s one way for them to come over and reverse fortunes and, not save face, but certainly inflict revenge on us. The pressure is going to be on us. We are going to be up for that and it’s something we are aware of,” he added. (ANI)

Rooney confident of ManU topping English Premier League

London, Jan 12 (ANI): Ace striker Wayne Rooney has warned Liverpool that he is about to dump them off the top of the Premier League.

The England striker scored in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, The Sun reported.

They are now favourites to win the title and will overtake both Chelsea and Liverpool by Saturday night if they beat Wigan at home on Wednesday and then pick up another three points at Bolton on Saturday.

Rooney said: “After watching Liverpool’s game on Saturday this was exactly what we needed. Now we could be top of the league by Saturday night. It is up to us now. We have got to win those two games before Liverpool play Everton on Monday. By Saturday night we want to look at that table and see ourselves top.”

United are now a point behind Chelsea and five behind Liverpool after this comfortable victory.

Rooney added: “It was very important to get that goal just on half-time because I think Chelsea had enjoyed more possession than us before that. Walking in at half-time their heads seemed to go down.”

“We knew if we attacked them in the second half they wouldn’t live with us. In the second half they put two up front and the game opened up. We thoroughly deserved to win.”

United boss Alex Ferguson agreed that Vidic’s goal turned everything in the champions’ favour.

He said: “That was crucial. It opened up the game and our midfield got far more space and 3-0 is a big scoreline in this game.

“It is significant for us because we are chasing Liverpool and, with our games in hand this result gets us near them.”

United also still have to play at home Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa. (ANI)
