Banderas says his ‘Shrek’ spin-off will have Tarantino feel to it

London, May 19 (ANI): Spanish actor Antonio Banderas has revealed that his ‘Shrek’ spin-off ‘Puss In Boots’ will have a Quentin Tarantino feel to it.

Banderas, 49, was at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Shrek Forever After’, when he explained what can be expected from his character’s own animated adventure when it hits cinemas in 2011.

“The movie is slightly different because actually they’re taking more of the imagery of movies in the 60s, like spaghetti westerns and stuff like that,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“It’s going to be kind of a Tarantino animation.

“I think we’ll have more time to squeeze the character and to see him in a totally different way.

“I actually have the script. He’s a little kid, he’s in an orphanage at the beginning and you’re going to see why he became an ogre killer,” he added. (ANI)

£2k worth Hobbit-style dome may solve Third World housing crisis

London, May 18 (ANI): A man has designed a Hobbit-style dome that he expects will be the answer to Third World housing crisis.

Jay Emery says that the house will cost just 2000 pounds each that can act as a glamorous garden office or leisure building but far more importantly, provide a groundbreaking solution to how buildings are made.

“It has hobbit-esque appeal.

“But the thing is, if you were to look at a traditional South African Zulu beehive it”s similar.

“But they”re prone to fire and need lots of maintenance while the dome home is fireprrof and we think it”s disaster resistant,” Sky news quoted entrepreneur Jay Emery as saying.

Emery, who moved to the UK from South Africa, ventured into the business first by hand-making bushman burner chimineas for his company Dingley Dell Enterprises in Worcestershire 10 years ago.

Using fire cement rather than terracotta, he moved to making African pot houses for people to dine in their gardens.

Eventually, he was given a grant to construct a similar structure near Stourport-on- Severn. Now he plans to build 30 dome homes for an AIDS orphanage in South Africa.

He”s currently competing in a competition to win 50,000 pounds to help prove his concept. (ANI)

Sarah Ferguson in £20K legal battle

London, May 10 (ANI): Sarah Ferguson is facing a 20,000-pound lawsuit for failing to stop a controversial book from hitting bookstores.

Journalist Chris Rogers interviewed Ferguson for Under Cover, a book about orphanages, and the royal had even planned to write the tome”s preface, based on her experience at a Turkish orphanage for a TV documentary in 2009.

However, her expose triggered controversy when Turkish officials demanded Ferguson”s extradition for violating laws by filming minors at the home, and the royal filed legal documents to try and stall the publication of Rogers” book, reports the Daily Star.

Rogers and Ferguson made an out-of-court settlement last December, but her lawyers apparently did not lodge the necessary paperwork in London”s High Court.

Now Rogers has submitted a bid to recoup his legal fees and court costs, reports the Mail on Sunday. (ANI)

Antonio Banderas confirms Shrek spin-off

London, Apr 21 (ANI): Antonio Banderas has confirmed that he will be voicing for a Shrek spin-off movie which will follow his character Puss In Boots.

In the animated ogre franchise, the Spanish actor voices the mischievous cat.

And Banderas has already started working on a new film based on the role, alongside Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis.

The actor will be reprising the role in the upcoming fourth and final Shrek film, ‘Shrek Forever After’ and has revealed that the upcoming project will be based on Puss In Boots” childhood.

“I already did the first recordings and it”s going to be called Puss In Boots – it starts when he was very little. He was in an orphanage when he first discovered the effect he has on people – that”s when he starts being intelligent,” The Daily Express quoted him as saying.

And Banderas is happy that he can use his natural accent at work.

“When I got to the United States – I was 30 at the time – I didn”t speak the language at all. The fact they gave me a character for the use of my voice only was quite surprising, but I suppose I have such an accent that is so recognisable that they thought it was perfect. Because I had been playing characters that were bigger than life, heroic, stuff like that, putting it into a tiny body of a pussy cat was fun,” he said. (ANI)

Russia to put U.S. adoption boy in foster home

A top Russian official said on Friday he hoped to quickly place an adopted boy into foster care one week after he was sent home alone from the United States, sparking a halt to all U.S. adoptions by Russia.

Artyom Savelyev, who celebrated his eighth birthday on Friday in a Moscow hospital where he is under observation, arrived by airplane with a letter from his U.S. mother asking for his adoption to be annulled on the grounds he was mentally unstable, triggering a furious reaction in Russia.

“Next week Artyom will be discharged from hospital and will go to a foster family in Moscow,” said the Russian President’s Ombudsman for Children’s Rights, Pavel Astakhov, after visiting him in hospital with birthday presents.

While children left without parental care usually face an uncertain future whose fate is not quickly solved, Astakhov said a decision was taken on Friday so everything possible would be done in Savelyev’s case, he said on his website rfdeti.ru.

Savelyev was adopted from an orphanage in Russia’s Far East in 2009. After six months, his adoptive mother, a single nurse from Tennessee, bought him a one-way ticket to Moscow. In an attached, typed note she described him as mentally unstable and violent.

Within around three weeks Astahkov said he hopedthe “most suitable family” would be found for the boy, who has been in hospital since his return from the United States.

Astakhov said Savelyev was in a good mood and smiling on Friday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev described the affair as a “monstrous deed” and Russian media has followed the case closely, expressing outrage at the boy’s experience.

Lawmakers drafted a bill on Friday that would formally suspend adoptions to the United States in line with an earlier Foreign Ministry announcement, Interfax reported.

Russia is the third largest source of foreign adoptions to the United States, with 1,586 children adopted last year, according to the U.S. State Department.

The U.S. embassy in Moscow said on Friday the child was “in good spirits” when a consular officer visited to give him a present. It added that Savelyev holds dual U.S. and Russian citizenship.

Madonna plans Malawi trip to ”reunite Mercy with her biological family”

London, March 30 (ANI): Pop diva Madonna is all set to fly to Malawi to reunite her adopted daughter Mercy with her blood related family.

James Kambewa, Mercy’s father, filed a legal bid to regain custody last April (09) but could not carry on and gave up the fight just two months later in June (09).

Mercy spent her formative years in Malawi orphanage before Madonna adopted her last year (09).

According to the Sun, the singer is now flying to Malawi with the girl and another adopted child David to meet their families.

“She promised to take them back to their homeland. She sees it as vital they understand their roots,” the Daily Star quoted a source as telling the publication.

“Mercy”s meeting with her family will be particularly emotional as it”s the first time she”s seen them since last summer,” the source added. (ANI)

Jharkhand man begs for alms to run orphanage

Dampara (Jharkhand), Sept 17 (ANI): Kantha Singh, a former motor mechanic, plays good samaritan for 42 orphans from tribal communities and runs an orphanage by begging for alms at Dampara village in Jharkhand.

Started in 2007, the orphanage had just 15 children. These children have been rendered homeless due to reckless alcoholism and polygamy prevalent in the area.

“They do not have any guardian. Some of them were even working, while others were living with relatives. We started the orphanage with 15 children, now we have 42. They are all taken care of and they are all studying,” said Singh.

Singh has voluntary workers at the orphanage, who beg for alms in the surrounding villages. The offerings by the people are not always enough. At times, the children have to make do with just salt and rice.

“We go from village to village begging for alms,” said Ramchandra Hembrum, a worker.

Singh’s service has earned him an invitation from the President. He and the other workers at the orphanage are now hopeful that the President would do something for the children.

The unexpected development has left them all overwhelmed.

“He will meet the President and talk to her about how difficult it is to run the orphanage. He will also talk about the needs of the children and all we need to run the orphanage well. He will also talk about their educational and other needs,” said Pather Saran, another worker.

Singh has also been taking care of the education of the orphans. He runs a school within the orphanage and hopes that the President will extend help, in his efforts to educate the children and ensure a good life for them. By Girija Shankar Ojha (ANI)

Elton John may have to battle gay adoption ban in Ukraine

London, September 14 (ANI): Elton john may need to overcome legal hurdles before he gets to adopt the Ukranian child he recently said he wishes to take home.

According to the national laws of the country, the ‘Candle in the Wind’ hitmaker and his partner David Furnish are too old to adopt 14-month-old Lev, as the law does not allow parents 45 years older than the child to adopt.

Also, same-sex couples are restricted from adopting a child.

Moreover, it has emerged that even if Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko were to allow the singer to adopt the kid, then he would have to take his brother too.

The singer was unaware of the legalities involved when he expressed the desire to be the child’s guardian.

He had said: “I don’t know what the procedure is to adopt a boy from the Ukraine.”

In case he manages to adopt Lev, then the boy will have his Christian name as his middle name under Ukrainian law.

He may be called Lev Eltonovich John and if the adoption is in the singer’s real name then, Lev Reginaldovich Dwight.

Sir Elton John plans to adopt 14-month-old Ukranian boy

London, September 13 (ANI): Sir Elton John is planning to adopt a child from Ukraine with partner David Furnish.

The singer revealed that a 14-month-old boy called Lev has apparently “stolen his heart.”

The child had performed at an orphanage in Ukraine while the ‘Candle In The Wind’ hitmaker was on a visit.

The 62-year-old confessed that he had always avoided adopting someone because of his age and continuous tours.

“David and I have always talked about adoption, David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said ‘no’ because I am 62 and I think because of the travelling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn’t be fair for the child,” the BBC News quoted him as saying.

“But having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today,” he added.

The death of Elton’s long-term keyboardist, Guy Babylon, has influenced him too.

He said: “Last week I lost one of my best friends; my keyboard player died of a heart attack at 52.

“It broke my heart because he was such a genius and so young and has two wonderful children.

“What better opportunity to replace someone I lost than to replace him with someone I can give a future to.” (ANI)

Iraqi shoe thrower inundated with offers of cars, homes and a wife!

London, Sept 9 (ANI): The Iraqi journalist, who threw his shoes at former US President George W. Bush to vent his anger, has been flooded with offer of cars, wives and money as he prepares to get out of jail.

Millions of people have heaped praise at Muntazer al-Zaidi who believe his act of defiance did what their leaders had been scared to do.

His message to Bush “This is your farewell kiss, you dog. This is for the widows and orphans of Iraq” is still celebrated by the Iraqi people.

According to the Guardian, Muntazer’s former boss has built a new four-bedroom home.

A new car has also been promised.

His employer, the al-Baghdadia television channel, is inundated with pledges of harems, money and healthcare.

“One Iraqi who lived in Morocco called to offer to send his daughter to be Muntazer’s wife,” the Telegraph quoted editor Abdul Hamid al-Saij as saying.

“Another called from Saudi offering 10m dollars for his shoes, and another called from Morocco offering a gold-saddled horse.

“After the event, we had callers from Palestine and many women asking to marry him, but we didn’t take their names. Many of their reactions were emotional. We will see what happens when he is freed,” he added.

However, Muntazer has been prepared to be shot by Bush’s bodyguards when he threw the shoes, his brother Maitham al-Zaidi told the paper.

“He always thought he would die as a martyr, either by al-Qaeda or the Americans. More than once he was kidnapped by insurgents. He was surprised that Bush’s guards didn’t shoot him on the spot,” he added.

Muntazer has told Maitham, and another brother, Vergam, that he was planning to open an orphanage when he leaves prison and will not work again as a journalist. (ANI)

Mercy’s granny never wanted to give her to Madonna permanently

London, June 29 (ANI): Madonna’s adopted daughter Mercy’s grandmother claims that the little girl was to be returned to her family from the orphanage she was living in.

Lucy Chekechiwa, the maternal grandmother of the Malawian child, claims that the family never agreed to put the four-year-old up for adoption on a permanent basis.

She insists that she had long fought to keep Mercy, whom the southern African country”s highest court ruled that Madonna could adopt earlier this month, and that she had only recently given up her long battle to keep her.

“The initial agreement was that Mercy was to be kept in the orphanage for six years. After six years Mercy was supposed to be brought back here and then I would have taken care of her,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“At first I didn”t want her to go but as a family we had to sit down and reach an agreement and we agreed that Mercy should go.

“The men insisted that Mercy be adopted and I won”t resist anymore. I still love Mercy. She is my dearest,” she added.

Chekechiwa tells in the Channel 4 documentary ‘Madonna and Mercy: What Really Happened’, set for broadcast on Monday, that she had fought against the adoption for three years, but had finally agreed to let Mercy go.

She revealed that Madonna first saw Mercy at an orphanage during her first visit to Malawi in 2006 with her then husband Guy Ritchie, and decided that Mercy was “the one”.

However, Chekechiwa refused to let the little girl go at the time.

Madonna finally decided on returning home with David Banda.

Mercy”s mother Mwandida had fallen pregnant aged 14 to an older student at school, and died from complications of childbirth days after the girl was born.

Mercy”s father James Kambewa claims being told that his daughter had also died, and that he learnt the truth only after being tracked down by journalists in April.

He now wants his daughter back.

He told Channel 4: “I am not supporting the adoption because I am still alive. I don”t see any justification why the girl should be adopted. But on the other hand when I learnt that my daughter is still alive I was very happy and I think I still need to raise her. It”s true that a child needs both parents but that doesn”t stop me from taking care of Mercy. I know I”m capable. I can do that.”

The programme also investigates the links between the adoption and the Kabbalah-sponsored Raising Malawi charity, whose co-founder is Michael Berg, the co-director of the Kabbalah Centre. (ANI)

Madonna ‘to cocoon Mercy from the world’

London, June 22 (ANI): Madonna is reportedly looking to cocoon her newly adopted daughter from the world after the tot joined her new mum in London.

Little Mercy James was apparently flown 6,000 miles from Malawi to meet her new family after the singer won the child’s custody two weeks ago.

The four-year-old was whisked to Madonna’s luxury home where she joined her new siblings Lourdes, 12, Rocco, eight and adopted David, three.

The Queen of Pop, known to pals as Em, will cocoon the youngster at her Marylebone home, while she settles into her new life, according to pals.

“Em has been waiting for this moment for years, but realises that she shouldn’t over-stimulate Mercy by immediately smothering her with attention and things to do,” British tabloid The Sun quoted a family friend as saying.

“After all, she has been in this before when she brought David home from Malawi so she understands how confusing it must be.

“The next few days are all about cocooning Mercy from the world and getting her used to being around her new family. Em had hoped to have all the children together for the next few days.

“But David couldn’t contain his excitement and was tearing round the house like a runaway horse. He kept shouting, ‘I want to see my sister,” and endlessly hugging and tugging at her.

“In the end it was best to pack him off with Rocco to Guy’s place in Wiltshire. Guy has been here to meet Mercy too. Em has a gentle few days planned ahead, with lots of singing and reading to her new daughter.

“Mercy has already fallen in love with the 2,000-pound rocking horse Em has placed in her bedroom. She can’t take her eyes off it,” the friend added,

Madge ‘flies Mercy straight to Kabbalah meeting’

London, June 21 (ANI): Madonna’s new adopted daughter Mercy was reportedly flown 6,000 miles from Malawi to meet her new family in London and taken straight to a Kabbalah meeting.

The three-year-old was allegedly whisked to the Kabbalah centre for her first lesson in the controversial Jewish mysticism within hours of arriving.

Little Mercy along with her new mum and siblings Lourdes, 12, Rocco, eight and David, three, was said to have spent an hour at the meeting before heading for the Queen of Pop’s 15-million pound home in Mayfair.

And the reported move to deny Mercy the chance to settle into her new life immediately after her arrival has sparked criticism.

“Taking her to a Kabbalah meeting will be a complete culture shock. She should be kept safe from experiences in the spotlight that will not help with her development,” The Mirror quoted Child psychologist Katherine Fingleton as saying.

Mercy was jetted out of the poverty-stricken southern African country after Madonna won custody of the child two weeks ago.

The singer was previously denied the right to adopt the Malawian tot since she was not a resident of the state.

But the decision was overturned by Malawi Supreme Court, saying that the child, who had been living in an orphanage, would have a better life with the megastar.

Orphans crave motherly affection on Mother’s Day in Bodh Gaya

Gaya, May 10 (ANI): As several children in cosmopolitan cities celebrated the Mother’s Day by greeting their mothers or giving some gift to them on Sunday, children at an orphanage in Bodh Gaya city in Bihar missed their mothers.

About 250 children, who are being brought up at an orphanage in Bodh Gaya, remembered their mothers’ affection on Sunday, the Mother’s Day.

These children, who cannot express their personal feelings to their mothers, prayed that no matter where does she exist today, may God bless her.

“My mother was very nice. I am praying to god that if she has anyroblems, they should all go away. God should send her to heaven,” saidohammed Mehtab Aalam, a child student at the orphanage in Bodh Gaya.

eachers at the orphanage here always try to convince the children that there is nothing missing in their lives.

“The children pray together for their mothers. All teachers try toooperate with them. We make efforts that they do not feel sad. We cannot be their mothers. But we try that they do not feel that they are orphans,”aid Roshan Ali, a teacher at the orphanage.

The orphanage was established in 1917 by Jeanne Pere, a French lady, who had come to visit Bodhgaya as a tourist but felt moved after noticing the plight of children begging outside a temple. She decided to stay on and take care of these poor souls.

Jeanne Pere runs a school at her orphanage for these children and bringing them up in an affection-filled environment. The children fondly call ‘Mami’ (maternal aunt).

Apart from providing education to the children, Pere also teaches embroidery and other skills at the orphanage. By Surya Pratap Singh (ANI)

Malawian kid Mercy’s self-proclaimed dad dubbed ‘opportunist’ by kin

New York, May 5 (ANI): Uncle of Mercy James, the Malawian tot Madonna wants to adopt, has dubbed her self-proclaimed dad “an opportunist”.

“How can he claim he is the father when he hasn’t been around all this time?” uncle Peter Beneti said of James Kambewa, calling him “just an opportunist.”

Madonna’s mouthpiece Liz Rosenberg said she has seen no proof Kambewa is the girl’s father, reports The New York Daily News.

“All I know is that Mercy has been in an orphanage since the day she was born,” she said.

The reaction comes right after Kambewa surfaced with claims that he is Mercy’s daddy.

“I do not want my baby to be adopted,” the 24-year-old security guard told CBS News’ “The Early Show.”

“I want to take care of her,” he added.

Kambewa claimed he was in a far-off village when the girl’s 14-year-old mom, Mwandida Chekechiwa, gave birth and didn’t know about her until recently. (ANI)

Madonna’s lawyers ‘hopeful’ adoption appeal would succeed

London, May 5 (ANI): Madonna’s lawyers are confident that the singer would succeed in her appeal against a ruling that crushed her dreams of adopting Malawian tot Mercy James.

Yesterday, the African country’s highest court heard arguments from the singer’s legal team over her bid to adopt the four-year-old from an orphanage in the village of Bvumbwe, The Telegraph reported.

Following yesterday’s hearing, the 50-year-old’s Malawian lawyer, Alan Chinula, said he was “hopeful” the appeal would succeed.

The hearing took place as James Kambewa, 24, who claims to be the girl’s father, said he would fight to raise her himself.

Last month, a lower court had rejected Madonna’s request on the grounds that foreigners seeking to adopt in Malawi must have been resident in the country for at least 18 months.

The residency restriction was waived when Madonna adopted four-year-old David Banda, also from Malawi, in 2006. (ANI)

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 29 (ANI): The sole orphanage for Malay Sikh kids has received a donation of RM 40,000 from The Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers, which is also known as Bakti, and from Malaysian Punjabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Senator Daljit Singh.

Gurupuri currently depends on donations from well-wishers.

The Star online quoted Rosmah, the wife of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, as saying: “If there are other requests, we will definitely consider helping out as well.”

Addressing a press conference after attending Sikh New Year celebrations at the orphanage, Rosmah appreciated its efforts in providing decent shelter and education to orphans.

Gurpuri Foundation Principal Sukhdaiv Singh praised the association as “a beacon of hope for the poor and underprivileged.”
