Coming soon: Harry Potter theme park

London, Sep 16 (ANI): Harry Potter fans can soon experience the thrills of the adventures of the hugely popular boy wizard, for a new theme park based on the hit franchise is set to open next year.

The theme park, called ‘The Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter’, is set to open in spring 2010 at Universal Studios, the Orlando resort has announced.he park is being developed in coordination with J.K. Rowling, the author of the immensely successful books, which have been adapted into films.

Recreating the fabled Hogwarts school that Potter and his friends attend, as well as the nearby village of Hogsmeade, the theme park promises a “completely immersive environment” for visitors.

“All of the action and adventures of Harry Potter’s world will come to life here at Universal Orlando Resort,” the Telegraph quoted Tom Williams, chairman and CEO of Universal Parks and Resorts, as saying.

“The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be unlike any other experience on earth,” he added.

In fact, visitors at a replica of the Three Broomsticks, one of Hogsmeade’s popular pubs, will be treated to traditional British fare and have the chance to sip on Butterbeer – Potter’s tipple of choice.

The park will also feature theme rides, including the ‘Flight of the Hippogriff’, which will simulate a training flight on the magical, quick-to-offend creature.

Those who lobed the fast-paced wizard sport Quidditch, will also have a chance to participate in a simulated Triwizard Tournament, as well as examine Quidditch equipment and even the elusive Golden Snitch at several Hogsmeade shops.

“Harry Potter continues to spark the imaginations of fans of all ages and we really have seen the anticipation continue to build for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” said Brad Globe, president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products. (ANI)

When Kerr was sprayed in face with perfume on red carpet

London, Sept 1 (ANI): Aussie model Miranda Kerr was momentarily blinded after she was accidentally sprayed in the face with perfume on the red carpet.

The Victoria’s Secret beauty, 26, was at the launch of the lingerie brand’s Heavenly Enchanted fragrance at The Grove in LA.

As she walked the red carpet, Kerr got a face full of the scent.

“Miranda was momentarily blinded,” the Daily Star quoted one of the guests as saying.

Meanwhile, Kerr, who is currently dating actor Orlando Bloom, has confessed that it is no easy job to be a model and catwalk on the ramp.

“Every catwalk is different. Sometimes they are really slippery. Some have glitter that’s a couple of inches thick. It gets all up in your toes. It’s a little bit messy – glitter flying everywhere,” she said.

She added that modelling is a demanding job, as it is extremely difficult to look good at all times. (ANI)

New flick may make ‘Harry Potter’ one of the most successful franchises

London, July 8 (ANI): The latest instalment in the Harry Potter film could help make the franchise as one of the most successful franchises of all time, owing to the huge merchandising that comes with it.

The first five Harry Potter movies have been a massive source of revenue and profit for Warner Bros.

The franchise has earned a whopping 4.5 billion dollars, an average of 897 million dollars, at the box office alone, making it the most successful film franchise of all time, behind James Bond

And it is believed that the release of the new film, ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, could push the Bond franchise back into second place.

In addition, it has earned 2.7 billion dollars from DVD sales, which makes for 211 million units, reports the Telegraph.

Video games have sold 1 billion dollars, more than 40 million units, while Warner Bros also makes hundreds of millions of dollars from merchandise and other sales such as downloads on iTunes.

After the DVD released of the ‘Half-Blood Prince’ later this year, a Lego video game based on Harry, Ron and Hermione’s first four years at Hogwarts, is due in 2010.

A theme park ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ is due to open in Orlando, Florida in spring 2010.

There is also the inevitable toy and clothing ranges which produce products such as interactive wands, Harry Potter-style glasses, Gryffindor scarves and a raft of action figures.

Mattel are set to release a new version of their popular ‘Scene It?’ interactive boardgames.

Harry Potter lovers can also expect top trumps, sticker albums and costumes. (ANI)

Why prostate cancer returns in some patients

Washington, May 28 (ANI): A new study has shed new light on why prostate cancer returns in some men despite receiving surgery or radiation therapy.

While most men have an excellent outcome with such standard treatments for localized prostate cancer, there are some for whom the treatment isn’t really effective.

The study is a collaborative effort between researchers at the Josephine Ford Cancer Center at Henry Ford Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center.

And it found that men with a low oxygen supply to their tumour are at a higher risk of prostate cancer return, if the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were increased after treatment.

“After several years of research, we were able to show that low levels of oxygen to the tumour are highly related to a patient’s outcome. Those with lower oxygen levels to the prostate cancer did not respond as well to radiation therapy, and the cancer returned more often,” said Dr. Benjamin Movsas, senior study author.

Recent studies have shown that the same applies to patients treated with surgery.

Movsas said that oxygen delivery to a tumour is critical to the treatment for many cancers- for example, radiation therapy creates free radicals that damage DNA in tumours, and oxygen acts as the mediator that perpetuates the free radicals.

Thus, Movsas began his work nearly a decade ago to investigate low oxygen levels – also known as tumour hypoxia – in prostate cancer tumours while working at Fox Chase.

To measure the amount of oxygen being delivered to the tumours and surrounding areas, researchers used custom-made oxygen probes to test 57 patients with low or immediate risk of cancer prior to radiation therapy.

The probe was used prior to “radioactive seeds” which were implanted in the prostate.

The initial study found that it is possible for prostate cancer tumours to have low oxygen levels.

And now, they have revealed that a tumour’s oxygen supply can significantly predict a patient’s outcome following treatment, independent from tumour stage or Gleason score-a classification of the grade of prostate cancer.

Of the 57 patients, the study found that eight experienced an increase in their PSA levels about eight years following treatment.

The results from the study will be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Orlando. (ANI)

Star Trek-like scanners may soon be healing wounds with light

Washington, May 27 (ANI): If you thought that Star Trek scanners that fix injuries with beams of light was just a piece of fiction, just be ready for this-scientists have developed a new optical technology that could lead to better artificial tissues and wounds that heal faster with less scarring.

The new technology lines up living cells and controls their movements to effectively heal the wounds faster.

Scientists have long used the energy in laser light to drill microscopic holes or as tweezers or traps to direct and manoeuvre small pieces of matter.

However, guiding entire cells has proven difficult because the lasers used for manipulation tend to damage the structural units of living organisms.

But now, Aristide Dogariu and colleagues at the University of Central Florida in Orlando have developed an optical procedure that does not harm cells, but affects their skeletons – an ensemble of slender rods made out of an abundant protein called actin.

The actin rods are constantly growing and shrinking inside of cells, but the direction in which they grow changes the cell’s membrane shape and dictates where the cell moves.

The researchers used the polarization of optical waves to create a field around the cells in which the growing actin rods line up like a compass in the Earth’s magnetic field.

It is possible to use the optical fields to direct large groups of cells to line up and move in the same direction.

The technique could be useful for cancer assays, which test the motility of cells, or as a non-invasive, non-toxic boost for regenerative medicine.

The findings were presented at the 2009 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/International Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/IQEC) at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore. (ANI)

Program on body, mind and spirit may help women with breast cancer cope

Washington, May 17 (ANI): A program, called Pathfinders, created to take care of body, mind and spirit, could help women with terminal cancer cope and improve their quality of life, says a new study.

The study led by researchers in the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center revealed that Pathfinders focuses on the seven pillars of personal recovery- hope, balance, inner strengths, self care, support, spirit and life review.

“The program helped improve distress and despair during the initial three months and up to six months after diagnosis among women with metastatic breast cancer and a six month life expectancy,” said Amy Abernethy, M.D., an oncologist at Duke University Medical Center and lead investigator on the study.

She added: “Even though the women were getting sicker and experiencing more symptoms related to their cancer, they reported that they felt less distress and despair as a result of being able to better cope with the cancer.”

The program provides patient navigation, counselling, coping skills training, mind and body techniques and lifestyle advice.

“The goal of the program is to teach patients coping skills for dealing with their cancer. To reach this goal, we have created a common language between patients, nurses, physicians and Pathfinders for communicating coping skills,” said Tina Staley, director of Pathfinders.

To conduct this pilot study, the researchers enrolled 50 adult breast cancer patients with a prognosis of less than six months survival.

The women met with a Pathfinder, a trained social worker, at least monthly, and also consulted via telephone and e-mails.

The social workers helped the women identify inner strength, taught them coping skills and encouraged them to engage in complementary and alternative medical services.

“There is a growing body of data that shows cancer patients have unmet psychosocial needs, and with programs like Pathfinders we are able to care for the whole person. As a result, we found that this group of women reported a higher quality of life three months after being diagnosed than was expected,” said Abernethy.

The findings will be presented on a poster at the 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Orlando. (ANI)

Soon, a vaginal cream to fight against HIV

Washington, Apr 28 (ANI): While there are many methods to prevent transmission of HIV, scientists have now claimed that a new vaginal cream containing a reawakened protein could someday prevent the transfer of the deadly virus.

Researchers at the University of Central Florida in Orlando have revived a dormant gene found in humans and coaxed it to produce retrocyclin-a protein that resists HIV.

In the study, led by Alexander Cole, researchers used aminoglycosides- drugs commonly used to fight bacterial infections- to trigger the production of the sleeping protein expressed by the retrocyclin gene.

“It could make a huge difference in the fight against HIV. Much more work would be needed to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of this approach. We would certainly have to have human trials, but these findings represent a promising step in that direction,” said Cole. ole embarked on his three-year investigation while he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles, and discovered that similar retrocyclin proteins found in early primates appeared to prevent HIV infections in cell cultures.

Although the same gene exists in humans, but because of a mutation, it no longer produces the protein.

And now, Cole’s team has found that restoring the production of retrocyclins prevents HIV entry.

They found a way to get the gene to produce the retrocyclins and then showed that the retrocyclins appear to prevent the transmission of HIV.

They then applied aminoglycoside antibiotics to vaginal tissues and cervical cells in the lab and found that the antibiotic appears to stimulate those cells and tissues to produce retrocyclins on their own.

He is positive that the aminoglycoside antibiotics could be used in a cream or gel format that could someday be a simple way to prevent the transmission of HIV from men to women.

The findings of the study have been published in this month’s PLOS Biology, a well-respected scientific journal. (ANI)

Cleveland’s Mike Brown named NBA Coach of the Year

Los Angeles – Mike Brown, who guided the Cleveland Cavaliers to a league and franchise-best 66-win season, was named on Monday the recipient of the Red Auerbach Trophy, honouring the NBA Coach of the Year.

Brown received 355 points, including 55 first-place votes, from a panel of 122 sportswriters and broadcasters to easily outdistance Houston’s Rick Adelman (151), Orlando’s Stan Van Gundy (150) and Portland’s Nate McMillan (127 points).

“Mike Brown is a critical element as to why our franchise is growing into the kind of success we all envisioned and hoped to achieve,” Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert said.

“I believe I speak for the entire Cleveland Cavaliers organization from players, to Mike’s staff, to our front office, from the business side and the people that work the games themselves, in conveying how excited and thrilled we are for Mike and his family that he has been awarded ‘Coach of the Year’. There is no man more deserving and it proves to the world that, yes, nice guys can indeed, finish first.”

In his fourth season behind the bench, Brown directed the LeBron James-led Cavaliers to a 66-16 record, including 39-2 at home, making them the 12th team in league history to post that many victories.

The Cavs’ 21-game improvement matched the 1971-72 LA Lakers for the second biggest turnaround among teams with at least 45 wins (45- 37) the previous season.

The NBA Coach of the Year Award is named after legendary coach and Hall of Famer Red Auerbach, who took the Boston Celtics to nine NBA Championships in the
1950s and 1960s.

Brown and the top-seeded Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead over the eighth-seeded Detroit Pistons on Saturday in the opening round of their Eastern Conference best-of-seven playoff series.

Pierce propels Celtics past Heat for 60th win

BOSTON (Reuters) – Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined in a strong fourth quarter to lead the Boston Celtics to a 105-98 win over the Miami Heat Friday.

Pierce scored nine of his 28 points and Allen had seven of his 21 in the final seven minutes to help the Celtics post their sixth successive victory and 60th of the year.

The win gives the reigning NBA champions a two-game lead over the Orlando Magic for the second seed in the Eastern Conference with three games remaining.

“It takes a great amount of focus (to win 60),” Allen told reporters. “We have a bunch of selfless individuals and regardless of who was in there everybody focused on their job and what they needed to do to make this team better.”

Dwyane Wade led the Heat with 31 points and nine assists, while rookie Michael Beasley scored 23 points and 13 rebounds in a losing effort.

Despite the loss, Miami retained the fifth-seed position in the Eastern Conference.

Both teams entered the game missing several injured players.

Boston’s Kevin Garnett missed his 19th game in the last 23 while trying to recover from a knee injury before the post-season starts and power forward Leon Powe is still out with knee condition.

Miami returned second-year guard Daequan Cook, who missed the team’s last game with a sore shoulder, but forward Udonis Haslem is out for the rest of the regular season with a thumb injury.

Pierce tallied 21 second-half points to help settle a tight game. He made two free-throws to break a 95-95 tie with 1:37 left and, after a jumper by Glen Davis, added two more to give the Celtics a 101-95 lead with 32 seconds to go.

Davis finished with 22 points and eight rebounds while Pierce added eight rebounds to keep Boston in top form.

“We’re a team that really doesn’t make excuses,” said Pierce. “We feel like this is what we are supposed to do regardless of our injuries and the guys we throw out there.”

Even Disney cuts jobs as people skip theme parks

Los Angeles, April 5 (IANS) The US economic downturn has begun to take its toll on the entertainment industry, with giant Walt Disney Co. axing 1,900 jobs from its theme parks in California and Florida.

According to reports, the company’s Walt Disney World in Orlando, which is the world’s most visited recreational resort, has eliminated 1,400 jobs.

The original Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, will also axe 300 positions.

The rest of the jobs are being eliminated at the company’s corporate headquarters at Burbank near here, reports said.

Disney employs about 80,000 people in its parks and resorts which account for a quarter of its total business and revenue.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Disney is bracing for an extended downturn as people skip theme parks to save money.

‘The recession, and the recent decline, has really hit the theme park industry, but it has hit the destination parks more than the regional parks,’ the newspaper quoted Edward Shaw, an associate with travel industry consultant Economics Research Associates, as saying.

‘People are staying closer to home,’ added Shah.

The entertainment giant’s sprawling 25,000-acre Walt Disney World in Orlando has been particularly hard-hit by the recession, the report says.

According to it, traffic to Orlando International Airport – which transports visitors to and from Disney – was down 14 percent in February compared with the same period last year.

Hotel bookings at the Disney resorts were also falling sharply, with March figures down 20 percent from the same period last year, the newspaper said.

The original Disneyland at Anaheim near here has also seen its bookings shrink by 12 percent in January-February and 15 percent in March compared to the same period last year.

The number of passengers flying into Los Angeles International Airport fell by 4.6 million in January, down 11.2 percent from January 2008, the newspaper said quoting the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Over 50pct Brits use sex toys, webcams in bedroom

London, Mar 31 (ANI): Brits lead the way when it comes to getting steamy in the bed, according to a new survey.

In the study conducted by Cosmopolitan magazine more than half of the people admitted using a sex toy in the sack, while a quarter used a webcam.

Almost 20pct of the respondents agreed that they would even hook up with a stranger they met on the Internet for casual sex.

However, most of the Britons stay loyal to their partners, for only 24pct admitting to cheating on their partners during marriage.

The survey involving people from six different countries UK, USA, Germany, Finland, Russia and Sweden showed that those from Finland were most likely to indulge in-group sex, while 54pct of Germans admit to having an affair.

When asked about which celebrity would they most like to sleep with, Johnny Depp, 45, Brad Pitt, 45, and Orlando Bloom, 32, topped the women list.

When it comes to having safe sex, Britons top the survey with 72pct avoiding unprotected sex.owever, the Finns were the least responsible with only 56pct agreeing on having safe sex.

“While Brits may be conservative about some aspects of their sexual behaviour, it’s great to see that we set the standards when it comes to practising safe sex,” the Daily Star quoted Cosmopolitan.co.uk editor Kate Creasey as saying. (ANI)

Now, simple finger device to predict future heart attack, stroke

Washington, Mar 27 (ANI): People who are considered at low or moderate risk of cardiac problems can now use a simple, non-invasive finger sensor test to know their chances of future heart events, such as heart attack or stroke, according to researchers at Mayo Clinic.

EndoPAT, the noninvasive finger test device, developed by Itamar Medical, measures the health of endothelial cells by measuring blood flow.

EndoPAT consists of digital recording equipment and two finger probes that look like large thimbles.

Endothelial cells line the blood vessels and regulate normal blood flow. It’s already known that if the cells don’t function properly – a condition called endothelial dysfunction – it can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) causing major cardiovascular health problems.

Amir Lerman, M.D., a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic and the senior author of the study said that earlier, there wasn’t any simple test for endothelium function.

It was found that 49 percent of patients whose EndoPAT test indicated poor endothelial function had a cardiac event during the seven-year study.

The researchers used the device to test 270 patients between the ages of 42 and 66 and followed their progress from August 1999 to August 2007.

The patients already knew that they had low-to-medium risk of experiencing a major heart event, based on their Framingham Risk Score-the commonly used risk predictor developed from the Framingham Heart Study, a longitudinal study of heart disease.

Lerman claimed that some of their risk factors included high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and a family history of heart disease.

“The results of the study may help identify a discriminating tool beyond the Framingham Risk Score. And the results of these individual tests may help physicians change a patient’s medications or recommend other therapies, so they don’t have a heart attack or stroke later on,” he said.

Lerman also added that the test may be used in an individualized medicine model of risk assessment of the patients.

The study will be presented at the American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Session in Orlando. (ANI)

Delhi becomes popular destination for Brit tourists amid recession

London, February 23 (ANI): Delhi has experienced a significant growth in becoming a popular destination amongst Brit tourists, and recession is to take the credit, say reports.

According to Opodo.co.uk, an online travel service, flights from Britain to the Indian capital were up by as much as 165 per cent.

The reason was accorded to holidaymakers’ preference for a long-haul travel in place of short city breaks against the weakening pound.

Other destinations to have felt the increased bookings were Melbourne with 400 per cent, and Singapore with 219 per cent.

Caroline Noble, Opodo UK country director, revealed the booking patterns were a sign that vacationers were dumping cities for one longer holiday outside the country.

“Bookings to Africa, Asia and the South Pacific have dramatically increased for summer 2009 whereas European cities are struggling, with Paris, Athens and Florence all reporting negative growth year-on-year,” the Scotsman quoted her as saying.

“We are also noticing that our customers are booking short-haul much later this year with the economic uncertainty, so we expect to see bookings increase as they book short holidays later in the year to complement the longer one they have already booked for further afield,” she added.

Top 10 destinations with the biggest growth this year are:

1. Melbourne – up 400%

2. Singapore up 219%

3. Delhi – up 165%

4. Brisbane up 115%

5. Orlando – up 90%

6. Sydney – up 81%

7. Washington – up 68%

8. Johannesburg – up 56%

9. Hong Kong up 43%

10.Kuala Lumpur – 41% (ANI)
