Drought for Pakistan cricket is over : PCB

Karachi, Sep.16 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed hope that the drought of international tournaments for the national squad would soon be over with several foreign tours and multi nation events scheduled for the next few months.

“The dry spell is finally over and that’s a good sign for our cricket,” PCB’s Chief Operating Office (COO) Wasim Bari said, adding, “A lot of positive developments are taking place. I must say that things are improving for Pakistan cricket.”

After virtually spending the last six months in hibernation, Pakistan has a packed cricket calendar in the forthcoming ten months.

Starting from the elite eight-nation ICC Champions Trophy beginning September 22, Pakistan would be touring three continents for a number of Test, one-day and twenty20 matches.

Pakistan is scheduled to ‘host’ New Zealand for four One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 matches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai next month. It will then fly to New Zealand to participate in a three match ‘home’ Test series against the Black Caps in November-December.

Then follows the tough tour of Australia, where they would be playing three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 game. Later, in 2010, Pakistan would be seen defending their ICC World T20 Champions title in the Carribeans.

Bari also expressed hope that international cricket would soon return to Pakistan and claimed that the security scenario was getting better in the country with time.

“Our players will get plenty of cricket in the coming months.

It’s now time that they prove their worth. The security situation (in Pakistan) is getting better every day which is why I’m hopeful for an early return of international cricket here,” The News quoted Bari, as saying. (ANI)

Pak-New Zealand ODI series to be held in UAE

Lahore, Sep 14 (ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ijaz Butt has said that he has had constructive talks with Emirates Cricket Board officials about holding a proposed ODI series against New Zealand there later this year.

Butt, who is in London, said that he would officially announce the venues for the four One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 matches on Monday after returning home.

“The venues, 90 per cent, would be Abu Dhabi and Dubai once again,” The News quoted Butt, as saying.

New Zealand has refused to tour Pakistan for the scheduled series in October this year because of the volatile security situation in the country.

However, it has agreed to play the matches at neutral venues and host the three Tests in New Zealand in November-December.

Pakistan has already played a one-day series with Australia in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in April-May this year.

Butt visit to the Emirates came after differences erupted over the hosting fees being demanded by the Abu Dhabi and Dubai cricket bodies.

After meeting with the Emirates board officials, Butt travelled to London where he held two rounds of talks with Giles Clarke who heads the Wales and English cricket Board and also leads the special task force of the International Cricket Council formed to explore possibilities for resumption of international cricket in Pakistan. Imran Farhat discontinues his ICL contract

Lahore, Sep.4 (ANI): Another Pakistan batsman Imran Farhat has parted ways with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL).

Farhat has handed over a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), saying he longer is affiliated with the ICL.

“Imran Farhat came to me to give ICL’s NOC and the PCB will adopt the same procedure, which has been applied in the case of the other ICL players,” The Dawn quoted PCB Chief Operating Officer (COO) Wasim Bari said.

Farhat, who has played 27 Test matches and 33 One-day Internationals for Pakistan had joined the ICL in 2007.

Farhat follows middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf and bowling all-rounders Abdul Razzaq and Rana Naved-ul-Hassan. (ANI)

‘Challenging’ Sri Lanka series awaits Pak players: Afridi

Lahore, July 3 (ANI): Pakistan all rounder Shahid Afridi has said that Sri Lanka Test series would be challenging for the players, as they would have to change gear from the Twenty20 format of the game to the five-day mode.

Afridi said players would also have to make adjustments due to the different and challenging weather conditions in Sri Lanka.

“The series in Sri Lanka would not be easy at all it will be a big challenge for our players to make successful adjustment from T20 cricket to Tests as well the different weather conditions,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

Afridi, who would not be featuring in the Test matches, said he decided to skip the three Test matches to focus more on the One-day and T20 game during the series.

“As it is I have not played too much Test cricket in the last few years so I wanted to take a rest and prepare for the one-dayers in Sri Lanka,” said Afridi.

Speculations are rife about Afridi captaining the team in the bang-bang version of the game after skipper Younis Khan’s retirement, but Afridi said he is focused on the game and not thinking about captaincy much.

“I have never run after the captaincy. Just playing for Pakistan and seeing it win is a big enough bonus for me. I am not thinking about the captaincy at this stage. I have just started training for the One-Day series in Sri Lanka,” he said. (ANI)

ICC T20 win to herald new era in Pakistan cricket : Alam

Karachi, June, 25 (ANI): Joyous by his team’s brilliant performance to win the ICC World Twenty20 Championship, Pakistan cricket coach Intikhab Alam has expressed the hope that the win would propel Pakistan on the international stage, and mark the start of a new era in the game’s history in the country.

Alam said the win has helped Pakistan regain the lost glory, and proved to be a shot in the arm for Pakistan cricket.

“The World Cup should be a beginning of a bright era in our cricket and we should translate that success into more such results in the future,” The News quoted Alam, as saying.

Alam said winning the coveted title has boosted the morale and confidence of the players, and hoped that Pakistan would continue its winning streak during the forthcoming Sri Lanka tour.

Pakistan is scheduled to play three Tests, five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 game against Sri Lanka during a six-wee-long tour.

The tour would be Pakistan’s first full overseas visit since the 2007 India series.

Alam admitted that Sri Lanka are a tough side to beat in their own backyard, but said that his players are ready to give the islanders a tough fight.

“It’s very important that we carry on winning. Sri Lanka is always a tough assignment. The playing conditions and the weather with all the heat and humidity can make things really difficult,” he said.

Referring to the return of experienced middle-order batsman Mohammad Yousuf in the national team, Alam said his return has ‘balanced’ the team.

“Yousuf’s return is certainly good news for us.He will strengthen our batting line-up,” he added. (ANI)

Pak to name ODI squad for Oz series after April 1

Karachi, Mar 24 (ANI): Pakistan is likely to name its 15-man squad for the one-day series against Australia after the conclusion of the National One-day Championship on April 1.

Coach Intikhab Alam said that after mutual consent it has been more or less decided that the selectors will wait till the end of the domestic one-day tournament before naming the squad for the ODI series to be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from April 22-May 7.

Pakistan will play five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 game against Australia, The Dawn reported.

Alam said the team management would give its input on the line-up for the series after assessing the performance of players in the domestic event.

“It is better to wait for a few days and see how the players perform in the domestic tournament before naming the national team,” said Alam. (ANI)

PCB awaiting Younis Khan’s inputs before finalizing team for Dubai series

Karachi, Mar.2o (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said the team for the Dubai series against Australia would only be announced after consulting captain Younis Khan.

“Younis is our captain and we will give his views due importance before finalising the squad,” The News quoted Chief Selector Abdul Qadir, as saying.

Qadir said the board is awaiting inputs from Khan.

Pakistan is slated to host Australia in the United Arab of Emirates (UAE), where both teams will play five One-day internationals and a Twenty-20 match.

he matches would be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from April 22 to May 7.

It may be re-called that right after being appointed captain of the national team, Younis Khan had said that he would like to have a say in selection process of the Pakistan team, if the Board wanted Pakistan to regain the top spot in the international rankings.

Qadir also proposed hosting the postponed Bangladesh series in Dubai.

“I believe that the cricket should go which is why if possible it would be great if we can have the series against Bangladesh in UAE before playing against Australia,” he added. (ANI)

IPL bound Brett Lee not scared by attack on Lankan players

Melbourne, Mar 5 (ANI): Less than 24 hours after world cricket descended into chaos in Lahore, Australian fast bowler Brett Lee defiantly said he would not bow to terrorism by withdrawing from the Indian Premier League.

Lee spent time relaxing in Sydney with son Preston on Wednesday, telling that he will not be scared off by the bloody attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Pakistan.

“At this stage I have no problem at all going ahead and playing IPL. What happened in Pakistan was obviously very sad, but we can’t let this stop us going about what we do with our lives. Obviously we will be guided by Cricket Australia and their cricket security experts,” The Courier Mail quoted Lee, as saying.

One-day stars Nathan Bracken, David Warner, Brad Hodge and David Hussey are also committed to play in India in April.

“From where I stand, it’s a tragic event and you have to soldier on. Bombs have gone off in London and we’ve toured there,” Hodge said.

Hussey agreed: “It’s probably a formality. I will go back, but I am monitoring events.”

Bracken said it was a concern that terrorism was impacting the sport. “But I’ll still be going,” he said.

However Test great Glenn McGrath is among those expressing grave reservations about his involvement in the Twenty20 competition.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting said his players are concerned about competing in the IPL.

“I think there would have been concerns about playing there after Mumbai. That’s still pretty fresh in everyone’s mind,” he said. (ANI)

Sudan to release 24 Darfur prisoners – minister

Sudan will free 24 Darfur prisoners as part of a goodwill agreement with rebels, Sudan’s justice minister said on Saturday.

Abdel Basit Sabderat said the release was linked to a deal signed in Qatar this week between Khartoum and the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), which is designed to pave the way to peace talks.

JEM released 21 government prisoners-of-war this week to hold up its end of the deal, a JEM commander said.

Many analysts have said Khartoum agreed to the Qatar deal as part of a diplomatic push to deflect a looming International Criminal Court war crimes case against Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

“The president has ordered the release of 24 prisoners related to Darfur cases,” Sabderat told reporters. He did not say which prisoners would be released or whether they would be JEM members.

The minister made the announcement at the end of a one-day visit to Khartoum by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.

At least 50 alleged JEM members are in prison in Khartoum, sentenced to death after being found guilty of taking part in the movement’s unprecedented attack on the capital in May.

“If the release takes place, then there is hope that we can all go back to Doha again for the next stage. If there is no release, there will be no Doha,” JEM commander Suleiman Sandal said.

During the Doha talks, both sides agreed to make peace negotiations a priority and adopt a series of confidence-building measures including a prisoner swap. They said they would meet again to negotiate a more formal “framework agreement” before considering a ceasefire and full peace talks.

Sudan’s army said 17 JEM fighters and 11 Sudanese soldiers were killed in clashes close to the north Darfur settlement of Donki on Thursday. Sandal confirmed the Donki fighting but said the rebels had routed the army.

Agbash said JEM forces had received supplies and support from the government of neighbouring Chad, repeating charges made by Sudanese government officials last month.

Relations between the oil-producing neighbours are on a knife-edge after Chad said last month that Sudan was backing a new insurgent coalition against the N’Djamena government.

Mostly non-Arab rebels took up arms against Sudan’s government in 2003, accusing Khartoum of neglecting the region’s development. Khartoum mobilised mostly Arab militias to crush the rebellion.

International experts say the fighting has killed 200,000 and uprooted 2.7 million people. Sudan’s government says 10,000 have been killed and accuses the Western media of exaggerating the conflict.

Sri Lankan cricket captain Jayawardene quits

Colombo, Feb.11 (ANI): Sri Lanka’s cricket captain Mahela Jayawardene resigned from the post on Wednesday.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board sources said Jayawardene decided to quit the captaincy from both forms of cricket after the Test series against Pakistan.

Sri Lanka was handed a 4-1 drubbing by India in the recently concluded One-day series during which Jayawardene’s lacklusture performance was criticised by top cricket officials, The Colombo Times reports.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Duleep Mendis said Jayawardene’s decision had been accepted and a new captain would be appointed for the one-day home series against Zimbabwe, which follows the Pakistan tour.

Jayawardene, who sat out Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 international against India on Tuesday, called for a meeting with the selectors on Wednesday morning and proposed that the time was right to hand over the captaincy, ensuring his successor had sufficient time to build the team for the 2011 World Cup. He was asked to reconsider but reiterated the time was right, given the heavy season ahead.

He then met Mendis and informed his teammates.

“This is something I have been considering for some time as it has been my long-held belief that my successor should have at least 18 months in the job to imprint his vision on the team for the 2011 World Cup,” Jayawardene said in a statement.

“I have concluded that the time has come for fresh leadership to takeover. It was not an easy decision to make because being the Sri Lanka captain has been the source of enormous pride. I hope to play a major part in the team’s success as a batsman,” he said.

Wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara, who is vice-captain of the squad, is likely to replace Jayawardene.

Jayawardene was appointed ODI captain in 2004 and took over the Test captaincy from Marvan Atapattu in 2006.

One of his major achievements was taking Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup where it was defeated by Australia. In 2008, Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup defeating India in the final.

Jayawardene led the side in 94 one-day internationals, winning 54 and losing 35.

He led the Lankan squad in 26 Tests, winning 15 and losing seven.

Despite his recent poor form in, he remains a prolific run-getter in the longer version of the game averaging 64.70 as captain. (ANI)

Sri Lanka cricket team to tour Pakistan from February 14

Lahore, Feb.10 (ANI): The Sri Lankan cricket team will return to Pakistan on February 14 to participate in the two match Test series starting February 21.

The islanders would be playing a two-day practice game from February 17 before taking on the home side in Karachi.

The second Test match scheduled to start on March 1 will be played in Lahore, the Nation reported.

Sri Lanka, after the 4-1 drubbing by India in the recently concluded One-day series, would be looking forward to putting up an improved show in the longer version of the game.

Pakistan, on the other hand would be donning the white clothes on a cricket field after more than a year, and is looking forward to the Test series to salvage some national pride. (ANI)

Younis Khan may replace Malik as captain

Karachi, Jan 27 (ANI): Pakistan batsman Younis Khan has emerged as the front-runner to replace Shoaib Malik as skipper ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka after they were thrashed badly by the Lankans in the just concluded ODI series.

Shoaib Malik’s is in the line of fire after being retained as Pakistan captain in December 2008, for an ‘indefinite’ period, after his team’s performance hit rock bottom against Sri Lanka on home soil, The News reported.

Malik came under fire for failing to unite the team and was also criticized for his inability to lead from the front when it mattered most.

According to sources, the PCB think-tank has reached the conclusion that Malik is unlikely to transform himself into a well-respected and able captain that Pakistan need at the moment, and it is now likely to turn to somebody with better credentials for what is regarded as one of the toughest jobs in world cricket.

That somebody, according to sources, is Younis Khan. The 31-year-old batter rejected offers to lead Pakistan after the 2007 World Cup fiasco, forcing the PCB to turn to a younger and less experienced Malik.

Younis was supposed to be an automatic choice to succeed Inzamam-ul-Haq as Pakistan captain, but he told the PCB that he was not ready to take the pressures of captaincy.

“Younis Khan is the only practice alternative we have in case Malik is sacked as captain,” said a PCB source.

“Younis is a well-respected senior player. Unlike Malik, he is an automatic choice for both Tests and one-dayers,” the source pointed out.
ounis is one of the most experienced cricketers in Pakistan, having scored 4816 runs from 58 Tests at 49.14 with 15 tons. He has also played 181 One-day Internationals, scoring 5306 runs.

Sources also said that Pakistan is also planning to carry out sweeping changes in the squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has refused to sack Malik as captain in spite of mounting criticism after Pakistan’s humiliating 234-run defeat in the ODI series decider against Sri Lanka last week.

Butt was quoted as saying in an interview on Monday that the board cannot take action against Malik on the basis of one or two results and will decide about its course of action after receiving a report from the team management. (ANI)

Special strategy to tackle Mendis, says Malik

Karachi, Jan.18 (ANI): Pakistan is fully prepared and raring to face Sri Lanka in the upcoming series, Captain Shoaib Malik has said.

Malik said the team has a definite strategy in place for the islanders for the nextthree-match One-day tournament commencing next week.

Commenting on the world-class spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, he said that his squad is fully ready to tackle the Lanka bowlers, and they have a comprehensive strategy to combat Mendis’s mysterious ‘carrom ball.’

“We have faced Murali on several occasions in the past and most of our batsmen have done well against him,” he said adding “Mendis is a relatively new bowler and we have prepared a strategy to tackle him.”

He hoped that the series would be exciting one with some close games between the two sides.

“Sri Lanka is one of the best teams in the world and the series is definitely going to be an interesting one,”the Nation quoted Malik, as saying.

He stressed that taking lead in the series will be important as the series has only three games.

“It’s a short series and winning the first match is going to be crucial in it,” Malik said.

About the services of Shoaib Akhtar, he said : “Akhtar is fully fit and is itching to take the field against Sri Lanka.”(ANI)

Dates for Pak-Sri Lanka one day internationals revised again

Karachi.Jan.14 (ANI): The itinerary of the Sri Lanka tour to Pakistan has been revised again.

According to the new schedule of the two – phased tour, the first two of the three one-day internationals will now be played in Karachi on January 20 and 21.

The third one-day will be in Lahore on January 24.

“The change has been made in the schedule on the request from Sri Lanka Cricket,” The News quoted a Pakistan Cricket Board official, as saying.

Earlier, the three One-day Internationals were scheduled to be played on January 21, 24 and 27.

The one day international which was to be played in Faisalabad on January 27, has been shifted to Karachi.
The PCB however, didn’t disclose whether there would be any change in the dates of the test matches which are to be played from February 14 in Lahore and Karachi in the second leg of the tour.(ANI)

PCB forced to award contract to pacer Abdul Rauf

Karachi, Jan 12 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was forced to review its central contracts’ list by including young fast bowler Abdul Rauf in it after the pacer complained in various television interviews that he was treated in an unjust manner.

A PCB spokesman said on Sunday that chief selector Abdul Qadir recommended a C-category contract for Rauf and later the Board chairman, Ijaz Butt, approved the player’s inclusion in the list.

Rauf’s inclusion in the elite list came just a day after the pacer complained of unfair treatment meted out to him by the PCB, The News reported.

“I am really sad at not being considered for the contract. I don’t understand why they ignored me,” Rauf said in one of the interviews.

Rauf made his One-day International debut last February against Zimbabwe. He has so far played four ODIs, collecting eight wickets at 26.50.

He was not the only one disappointed after seeing the 26-man list. A number of other talented cricketers were also ignored.

There were also reports that two of the three national selectors were not even consulted over the central contracts.

It was alleged that chief selector Qadir prepared the list all by himself without taking advice from fellow selectors Shoaib Mohammad and Saleem Jaffer.

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam, manager Yawar Saeed and Qadir were the three officials given the task to prepare the list.

Unlike the previous list that was based on performance, the new contracts were based on seniority and even cricketers who did not play a single match for Pakistan in 2008 were given A-category contracts. (ANI)

Hayden says he will not be pushed into retirement

Melbourne, Jan 9 (ANI): Out of form Australian opener Matthew Hayden has vowed that he will not be pushed into retirement, despite selectors appearing to have made the decision for him.

On a dramatic day when Hayden was dropped from the one-day team, chief selector Andrew Hilditch backtracked on an earlier pledge to take the batting veteran to the Ashes, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Hayden said he will not be forced into retiring from his 103-Test career, but conceded that the next fortnight could be decision time if he wants to go out on his terms.

“Ultimately it will be my call to look in the mirror and say, ‘Mate it is time to go’ . . . or it’s time to saddle up, pull your socks up and get on with South Africa and the Ashes,” Hayden said.

The Queenslander will play for his beloved Bulls in a Sheffield Shield game on January 30 in his only chance to stake a claim for next month’s Test series in South Africa.

“It is very difficult to take a breath and get your mind around what my future does hold. I am going to take the time to do that. It is a time to take stock,” he said.

“I think I’m supposed to have a miracle answer but I want to take my time and make a good decision moving forward. I want to enjoy what”s gone and try to refocus as I”ve done several times through my career.

“If I don”t feel like I’m contributing to that (Australian cricket) culture . . . then I will be knocking on their (selectors’) doors,” Hayden added.

Hayden knew the writing was on the wall for his glorious 161-match ODI career, but was still shattered when Hilditch delivered the news in Sydney on Wednesday night.

In a significant pointer that Hayden has now also played his final Test, Hilditch backed away from statements earlier this summer that he wanted the veteran to play through to the Ashes.

NSW young gun David Warner will be Australia’s new Twenty20 opener in Sunday’s tie South Africa while Queensland all-rounder James Hopes is likely to take Hayden’s opening slot in the one-day team. (ANI)

Vettori reclaims top spot in ICC rankings for ODI bowlers

Dubai, Jan 9 (ANI): New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has made a superb start to 2009 by becoming the number-one ranked ODI bowler in the world again.

The left-arm spinner, who turns 30 later this month, has taken six wickets in the first three matches of the current series against the West Indies at an impressive average of just 12.33 and a thrifty economy rate of 3.08.

In the process he has moved above Australia’s Nathan Bracken into top spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers.

It is not the first time Vettori has been at the summit, having spent much of the first half of last year in first position. But Bracken toppled him in June 2008, coincidentally also while playing against the West Indies, but now the 31-year-old New South Welshman has been consigned to second spot once again.

Nevertheless, Bracken has the perfect opportunity to retake number-one place having been named in Australia’s one-day squad for the upcoming five-ODI series against South Africa.

Things are continuing to go well for Vettori’s team-mate Kyle Mills as his four wickets claimed in the series so far have earned him another place and put him in fourth, just ahead of Mitchell Johnson of Australia.

West Indies fast bowler Daren Powell has managed to move up two places to 17th position in the bowling rankings following a good start to the ODI series in New Zealand for him.

The big mover is young Black Cap Tim Southee who has managed to gain 20 places to put him in 75th position.

Another top-class player who has not fired on all cylinders during this series to date is West Indies talisman Chris Gayle. The hard-hitting left-hander has lost one place in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen and has dropped out of the top five, into sixth position.

His place has been taken by India’s Yuvraj Singh, who returns to the top five after a brief spell occupying sixth place. Top spot is still reserved for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is closely followed by Michael Hussey of Australia in second place and Proteas’ captain Graeme Smith in third. (ANI)

Pietersen arrives back in the UK

London, Jan.8 (ANI): Ex-England cricket captain Kevin Pietersen has arrived back home following a winter holiday in South Africa.

Greeted by photographers and reporters, Pietersen refused to make a comment on the current crisis in England cricket, and was escorted to a waiting car by police.

Pietersen quit as England skipper after only five months on Wednesday in the wake of his rift with coach Peter Moores – who was sacked.

Wednesday”s tumultuous events leave England in disarray ahead of the tour to the West Indies and the Ashes series against Australia this summer.

England leave for the Caribbean on January 21, and the England and Wales Cricket Board will now begin its search for a new coach.

Andrew Strauss has been named as captain for the tour of the West Indies, although it is not known whether he will also take charge of the one-day and Twenty20 teams.

The ECB have announced a news conference for 3 p.m. GMT at Lord”s, where Strauss and Hugh Morris, the ECB”s managing director, will address the media.

Pietersen, who admitted last week his relationship with Moores was strained, has stated his desire to remain involved in the England set-up.

And former skipper Michael Vaughan, whose potential return to the England team led to a clash between Pietersen and Moores, has backed Pietersen to put the controversy behind him.

“What Kevin has to do now is go to the West Indies and score a hundred in the first Test, then it will be forgotten,” Vaughan .

Past skippers and players said that Pietersen got what he justily deserved after bringing his conflict with Moores into the public domain. (ANI)

Forgotten Phil Jaques declares he is ready to tour S.Africa

Sydney, Jan.8 (ANI): Forgotten Australian opener Phil Jaques has declared that he is available to return for next month”s tour of South Africa.

With Hayden showing no signs of retirement, Jaques, 29, declared his availability for the crunch tour as he tries to return from back surgery on a bulging disc.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the left-hander thinks he has the runs on the board after scoring 108 in his last Test against the West Indies in Barbados last year.

He will play club cricket next week and then return to the first-class scene when NSW play Tasmania in Newcastle on January 30.

If his back shows no signs of more problems, Jaques appears a must-have selection for South Africa after averaging 47 in his 11 Tests.

“I scored 100 in my last Test so hopefully they remember that,” Jaques told The Daily Telegraph yesterday. “I think I”ve got the runs on the board.

Australia will name the one-day and Twenty20 squads today and Hayden surely must exit for younger men. (ANI)

Flintoff, Strauss refusal forced Pietersen to resign

London, Jan 8 (ANI): Kevin Pietersen was forced into resigning as England Test and one-day captain after all rounder Andrew Flintoff and new skipper Andrew Strauss refused to back him and ECB’s Managing Director Hugh Morris hinted at divisions in the team.

The England and Wales Cricket Board could not forgive Pietersen who was demanding Moores to be axed for issuing his ‘back me or sack me’ ultimatum last week and Pietersen had no idea that several senior England players such as Flintoff and Strauss also refused to back him when asked to do so by England boss Morris.

The role of Andrew Flintoff in his downfall will be keenly discussed. Flintoff and Strauss — named KP’s replacement — are understood to have stuck the knife in.

And England boss Morris hinted at divisions in the team when he said: “Kevin recognised that, in the present situation, it was impossible to restore dressing-room unity.”

Pietersen’s fate was sealed during a conference call between the 12-man ECB management board on Tuesday evening when it was agreed he and coach Peter Moores must go, The Sun reported.

After a day of frantic negotiating on Wednesday, Pietersen was finally allowed to save some face by announcing that he had resigned.

Morris added: “Kevin Pietersen is highly valued as a senior and experienced player and we are delighted he has indicated he wishes to continue to represent England in all forthcoming matches.

“I have an extremely high regard for Kevin but this has become an impossible situation given the irretrievable breakdown of the relationship between captain and coach.”

Pietersen arrives back in England this morning from his holiday in Africa and he could scarcely conceal his fury. (ANI)
