‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ make it to Collins English Dictionary

London, Aug 31 (ANI): ‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ are among the 267 words that have been added to this year’s Collins English Dictionary, all thanks to teenagers who use such words on social networking websites.

With teenagers increasingly using these grunts and sighs in words on Twitter and other such websites, the need to find spellings for sounds that were traditionally used only in speech has also spawned “meh” (an expression of dissatisfaction) and “mwah” (the sound of a noisy kiss).

Users of social networking sites may also be responsible for the resurgence of “heigh-ho” or “hey-ho” – an exclamation of weariness, disappointment, surprise or happiness – that went out of fashion in the early 20th century.

In fact, Twitter-the microblogging site that allows people to communicate in messages of 140 characters or less-has also been accepted as a verb by the dictionary to describe the act of using Twitter.

Other internet-derived terms include “noob” (short for newbie, a term for someone unfamiliar with web etiquette) and “woot” (an expression of joy conveying a sense of achievement).

New abbreviations used for convenience in text messages such as “OMG” (short for “oh, my God”) “soz” (short for sorry) and wtf (short for “what the f***?”) are also included in the dictionary.

Some new words in the dictionary could make many traditionalists cringe in their seats-new portmanteau words purporting to describe a new trend include “staycation” (a combination of stay and vacation, meaning to take a holiday without going abroad) and “glamping” (glamorous camping).

“Buzzkillers” (someone who stops other people from enjoying themselves), and “beer o’clock” (a time considered appropriate to start drinking) may also take many traditionalists by surprise.

“English is very good at absorbing new words. [But] in three or four years a lot of these words may have fallen out of use and might well come out of the dictionary,” Times Online quoted Elaine Higgleton, the Editorial Director for Collins, as saying. (ANI)

Lily Allen rates English cricketers on who she’ll ‘shag’ or ‘snog’

London, August 22 (ANI): Pop star Lily Allen has apparently revealed who in the England cricket team she will “shag” or “snog”.

Along with her builder boyfriend Sam Cooper, she picked up a programme at the England versus Oz Ashes’ decider at The Oval.

And alongside the players’ names, the brash singer started scribbling what she would like to do with them.

Sam was sitting next to her when she rated Freddie Flintoff a “shag”, and Steve Harmison a “snog”.

“Lily was marking her favourites on the programme and rubbing her fella’s face in it,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“She likes Freddie the best so she scribbled shag next to his picture and snog next to Steve’s.

“She likes to wind her boyfriend up and make him jealous. It was doing the trick. She was clinging on to him all day. They were loved-up,” the source added.

Clad in a see-through top, Lily was shown on television as well as on the ground’s big screen several times during the opening day’s play.

Sources have revealed that Sam started to feel uncomfortable when they went to the players’ bar for a tipple at the end of play.

A source said: “He was taking it all in his stride until they went to the bar. It was then when he started to look really uncomfortable with the attention she was getting. She was the talk of the dressing room because of all the stuff she’s been saying about the team.”

Lily is also said to have turned her affections towards champion bowler Stuart Broad on Twitter.

She Twittered: “Stuart Broad is fast becoming my favourite England cricketer. OMG. Broad is a genius. And he doesn’t have a beer gut.”

Reports quoting her having stating that have also pointed out hat her current fella has a beer gut. (ANI)

Fans in shock over Jacko’s sudden death

London, June 26 (ANI): It doesn’t matter if you are black or white – King of Pop Michael Jackson’s death has shocked people world over.

The hospital in Los Angeles where Jackson was taken witnessed massive crowd mourning his death. The 50-year-old died of apparent heart attack.

The New York Square also stood still as the news flashed on a screen followed by a groan of disbelief, reports The Sun.

The news spread like wildfire with people messaging their friends, while those who could visit any place with memories associated to Jackson gathered there.

Hundreds gathered at the Hollywood Walk of Fame where Jackson’s name is immortalized.

In London’s West End, fans began gathering at the Lyric Theatre where the Jacko tribute show Thriller Live, was supposed to take place.

Jackson had been rehearsing ahead of a 50-date extravaganza at London’s O2.

William Tite, 19, of Putney, South London, said: “I loved Michael Jackson and just had to come here to pay my respects. “He was the greatest performer we have ever seen.”

It also shocked music lovers in Asia as they woke up, where the icon had a great fan following.

Actress Demi Moore tweeted on social network site Twitter: “I am greatly saddened for the loss of both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Especially for their children.”

While her husband, Ashton Kutcher posted: “RIP. Sending love and light to family and friend but especially his kids.”

A list of stars used the website TMZ to make a comment.

Actress Lindsay Lohan wrote: “NO OMG … sending my love and prayers out to Michael and his family … i feel sick..” (ANI)

“Hannah Montana” rocks North American box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – OMG! OMG!

Sixteen-year-old actress Miley Cyrus became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood on Sunday as her first nonconcert movie topped the North American box office, earning twice as much as Disney had forecast.

Walt Disney Co’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie” sold $34 million worth of tickets at the three-day Easter weekend, as fans of the perky starlet rushed to see the first big-screen adaptation of her hit Disney Channel TV series.

Cyrus returned the favor, turning up with her father and co-star, Billy Ray Cyrus, at theaters in Utah and Tennessee and blogging about her wild weekend on Twitter.

“omgomg! my fans rock! the movie is doing great you guys! omg AND its all cause of you!!!! I LOVE U ALL! IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT YET CHECK IT!,” she wrote, using the “omg” acronym as shorthand for “Oh, my God.”

As in her TV show, Cyrus plays a regular schoolgirl by day and a pop star by night. But her father (Billy Ray Cyrus) decides she needs to get back to her small-town roots, so takes her on a surprise trip to her old Tennessee home where love and other complications ensue.

Going into the weekend, Disney had hoped “Hannah Montana” would perform in the same range as 2003′s “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” a vehicle for Disney Channel star Hilary Duff. “Lizzie” opened to $17.3 million in 2003, and ended its domestic run with $42.7 million.

DISNEY SURPRISED

On Sunday, the studio denied that it had deliberately set a low target. “It caught us by surprise. No doubt about it,” said Chuck Viane, the studio’s president of domestic theatrical distribution. “Outside of Wow! what can you say?”

Exit polling showed that women made up 80 percent of moviegoers, and 60 percent of the audience was aged between two and 17, Viane said.

Cyrus’ previous big-screen outing, “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour,” opened with $31 million last year, ending up with $65 million to become the biggest concert movie of all time.

Disney will soon begin shooting another Cyrus movie, “The Last Song,” Viane said.

Cyrus is now a bigger draw than Oscar-winners like Julia Roberts and Jodie Foster, who each had $13 million openings with their last movies, “Duplicity” and “Nim’s Island,” respectively.

Last weekend’s champion “Fast and Furious” slipped to No. 2 with $28.8 million, taking the 10-day total for Universal Pictures’ race-car thriller to $118.0 million. The studio is a unit of General Electric Co’s NBC Universal.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc’s “Monsters vs. Aliens” was down one at No. 3 with $22.6 million in its third weekend; its total rose to $141 million.

Also new was the dark comedy “Observe and Report,” which opened at No. 4 with $11.1 million, falling short of the expectations of its distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures. The Time Warner Inc.-owned studio had hoped for an opening in the $14 million to $15 million range.

The Japanese-inspired fantasy “Dragonball Evolution” opened at No. 7 with $4.7 million, also a little lower than the modest forecasts of its distributor 20th Century Fox. But the News Corp-owned studio said the film is doing better internationally with sales to date of $37 million.
