Federer to leave friendship aside against Wawrinka

No-one knows the importance of a killer instinct in tennis more than Roger Federer, but even the Swiss maestro accepts it will be tough to keep his feelings in check when he faces great friend Stanislas Wawrinka on Sunday.

The Olympic doubles champions and practice partners face each other across the net for the first time in a grand slam, and with Wawrinka boasting a rare clay victory over the world number one Federer knows he faces a formidable foe.

“We know it’s going to be a tough match, so I’m very happy about this challenge, because he’s a great player. I’ll have to play great tennis, also,” the top seed said after swatting aside German qualifier Julian Reister 6-4 6-0 6-4 on Friday.

Federer has throughout his career been something of a mentor for Wawrinka, at 25 three years his junior, offering him advice in the early stages of their friendship.

Yet Wawrinka, who won doubles gold alongside Federer for Switzerland in Beijing two years ago, scored a three-set win on clay in Monte Carlo last year and will likewise forget their friendship for what promises to be a captivating fourth-round battle.

“I’m not his coach, but at the beginning it’s like giving tips and advice. I saw him growing, and he had many problems with the indoors before on the hard or quick surfaces.

“I saw how he developed on these surfaces. It’s always very interesting to see how he can continue and make progress. He’s no longer asking for tips, which is a good sign.”

Like Federer, the softly spoken Wawrinka has yet to lose a set in his current Roland Garros campaign, and has reached the last 16 for the first time in Paris.

“I’ve never played against him during a grand slam, so that’s a bit of a difference,” Federer said. “He’s really fit, and we have the same physical trainer. We know what we do.”

Wawrinka needed no reminding of the influence Federer had had on his career.

“When I was young and I arrived on the tour, he was already top 10. Because of him, I have a gold medal in my house, so I’m very happy for that,” said Wawrinka after dispatching Italian Fabio Fognini in straight sets on Friday.

“It’s never easy because he’s really a good friend. We know each other so well, so it’s never easy to play him, especially here in French Open.

“But then when you go on court you try to do your job.”

Bolt delights home fans with fourth-fastest 200m

Triple Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt ran the fourth-fastest 200 metres of all-time with a blistering 19.56 second sprint in front of his home fans at the Jamaica International Invitational on Saturday.

Only Bolt (twice) and former world record holder Michael Johnson have ever clocked faster times.

The Jamaican’s world record stands at 19.19 seconds, which he set at last year’s world championships in Berlin, and his latest effort was all the more impressive as it was run into a headwind of 0.8 metres per second.

American world bronze medallist Wallace Spearmon also dipped under 20 seconds, running 19.98 seconds to finish a distant second.

Hooker out of Stawell Gift

Pole vault superstar Steve Hooker has withdrawn from the Stawell Gift semi-finals with a sore groin after being added to the field in a postscript to the mis-measuring fiasco.

Officials from the Victorian Athletic League (VAL) and the Stawell Athletic Club (SAC) were left red-faced after it was revealed that the track for the 129th edition of the Gift was 123.2 metres long, rather than the regulation 120m.

The track was re-surveyed on Sunday.

Hooker, the Olympic and world pole vault champion, had been run out in Saturday’s heats after fading late to finish third in 13.24 seconds off a 5.5m mark.

VAL stewards added three more runners to the 42-strong semi-final field late on Saturday because they had been disadvantaged by the overly long track.

And upon further review of all 20 heats on Sunday morning, Hooker and Stawell veteran Ryan Hoffman were also reinstated because they had been in winning positions at the 120m mark of their races.

But Hooker said he would be unable to front up for the semis on Monday.

“Obviously I was a bit surprised to learn that I had been added to the semi-final draw,” he said.

“When I woke up this morning my groin was inflamed and after what happened at the world championships and with the national titles just two weeks away, it’s not a risk I can afford to take.

“At the end of the day, I haven’t got that much hope either so I will be happy to sit in the stands and watch the real sprinters fight it out.”

Close friend and world championships long jump bronze medallist Mitchell Watt is through to the semis after finishing second in his heat off a tough mark of 2.5m.

The semi-finals and final will be held on Monday, with the winner pocketing $40,000.

Kalmadi confident about Commonwealth Games 2010 being held

New Delhi, Sep.16 (ANI): Indian Olympic Association (IOC) President Suresh Kalmadi on Wednesday expressed confidence about the Commonwealth Games being held successfully in 2010.

Addressing a press conference here, Kalmadi, who is the Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Commitee, said: “Sports Minister M S Gill, Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit are working as a team to deliver a great Game.”

“We have hired many international experts to ensure there are no slip-ups,” he added.

He also brushed aside Commonwealth Games Federation President Michael Fennell’s criticism on New Delhi’s ability to successfully hold the 2010 Commonwealth Games, adding that Fennell’s doubts would be cleared next month.

Fennell had written to Kalmadi criticising New Delhi’s preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and said that a meeting with the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, may be required to sort out all preparatory-related issues.

Union Sports Minister M S Gill on Tuesday summoned Kalmadi to take stock of the situation. IOA Secretary General Randhir Singh was also present at the meeting.

Gill has met Dikshit to discuss the Games and the progress being made. (ANI)

Olympians should face tests for hidden heart problems

London, Sep 14 (ANI): Athletes who participate in worldwide sports events like the Olympics should be screened for hidden heart problems – and potential disqualification if any are detected, claims a collection of studies, one of which was conducted by an Indian origin researcher.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) ordered to conduct the studies into the practicality and effectiveness of such tests.

There have been a number of seemingly healthy athletes, who have dropped dead from “sudden cardiac death”, including the Spanish footballer Antonio Puerta two years ago and British rower Scott Rennie in March this year.

Many of the heart problems that trigger such deaths can be detected through physical examination, electrocardiograms and by taking a medical history, as laid out in the “Lausanne recommendations” created under the auspices of the European Society of Cardiology.

The new studies have indicated that implementing these recommendations can help save lives.

In one such study, researchers applied the protocol to 371 Dutch athletes aged 12 to 35 over two years.

Of the 55 who were referred for additional testing, 10 had an underlying cardiovascular problem, and three were restricted from further participation in sport

“Everybody who plays sports needs to be aware that there are certain conditions that may be silent, that could result in a fatality,” New Scientist quoted Sanjay Sharma, a cardiologist at King’s College Hospital in London, who led one of the studies, as saying.

The study has been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. (ANI)

Joe Frazier thinks Wesley Snipes will be ‘good fit’ to portray his mentor

New York, September 3 (ANI): Former Olympic champion Joe Frazier may not be sure who should portray him a film on his life, but he does have some recommendation for the role of his uncle and mentor, Rock.

“Wesley Snipes would be a good fit,” the New York Post quoted him as saying.

Frazier is known for beating Muhammad Ali in their first bout, though he lost to the latter in twice later.

As regards any actors he would want to see portraying him in the film, the former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion said: “It would have to be someone that could accurately portray the struggles I went through to become heavyweight champ.” (ANI)

Lunar clock to be built by River Thames by 2012

London, September 3 (ANI): Scientists and artists are planning to build a 40m-wide lunar clock by the River Thames by the year 2012.

According to a report by BBC News, the aim is to create a new London landmark close to the proposed Olympic stadium as a monument to a more natural way of marking time.

The proposed site is at East India Dock, six miles along the river from Westminster Palace. It is currently a bedraggled nature reserve.

The designers of the clock hope that the instrument will become as iconic as Big Ben, which has been marking time for 150 years.

Laura Williams, an East London artist, explained that the clock would be powered by the tides from the Thames.

“There are three giant concentric rings made from recycled glass. Light shines through from the glass in time with the Moon’s cycles so the largest ring shows the lunar phase,” she said.

“Gradually, the light waxes on all the way around the ring and connects full circle when it’s full Moon,” she added.

“The second ring is like the big hand of the clock. It’s a marker of light that tracks the Moon around the globe so that’s the lunar day cycle,” said Williams.

“The third ring – the smallest – is the small hand that tracks the tide as it goes from high tide to low,” she said.

The clock has been called Aluna. It is a word from the Kogi indigenous people of Colombia.

“It means memory, possibility. It’s also being in tune with the planet’s rhythms and living in harmony with our planet,” said Williams.

According to Dr Usama Hasan, an astronomer, in this age of iPods and atomic clocks, there is a greater need than ever for an older way of measuring time.

“Aluna is a project which tries to connect us back to the cosmic cycle, with nature. I think that’s very important especially in the very technological age we live in,” said Hasan. (ANI)

British police fear rise in sex workers during 2012 London Olympics

London, July 15 (ANI): Police in Britain fear that the 2012 Olympics, which will be hosted in London, may spark a rise in sex workers.

With thousands of spectators, site workers and athletes around, there will be a huge demand for prostitutes, and the chances of sex workers being smuggled in, are huge.

Vice cops have already reported that more and more sex workers are plying their trade around the five Olympic host boroughs in London.

Lynne Abrams of the Met Police Authority said that women’s safety could be affected.

“The risk of damage to the reputation of London and the UK is considerable,” the Sun quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Its looks over ranking that decide which women play on Wimbledon’s Centre Court!

London, June 30 (ANI): Wimbledon tennis organizers have been accused of using looks rather than ranking to decide which women play on Centre Court.

According to Sky News, in the first week of the Championships, fans missed out on watching several top seeded players on the exclusive Centre Court.

On Wednesday, the number two seed Serena Williams played her second round game on Court One, while fourth seed Elena Dementieva appeared on Court Two.

Centre Court was allocated to the 24th seed Maria Sharapova and the unseeded Gisela Dulko in what was widely regarded as a ‘battle of the babes’.

The Times said some eyebrows were raised last Thursday, when the ninth seed played on Centre Court, leaving the top seed Dinara Safina on Court Two.

“There was a little bit of surprise in putting the Wozniacki-Kirilenko match on Centre Court – two beautiful blonde girls. You could argue there it was more box office, than whether they were deserving of a place on Centre Court,” the paper’s correspondent said.

On Friday, Serena Williams played on Court Two, while Centre Court saw action from the attractive, but lower ranked eighth seed Victoria Azarenka and 28th seeded Sorana Cirstea.

Some are now questioning the way Wimbledon allocates its most prestigious court – and asking whether it is based on looks.

Olympic Gold Medallist, and sports campaigner Tessa Sanderson CBE, described the situation as “laughable”.

“I can’t believe they’re doing this. You can’t judge people by the way they look. Women have been getting a lot better at raising their profile in sport. This is the most pathetic thing I’ve heard,” she was quoted, as saying.

All England Club spokesman Johnny Perkins said: “We don’t look at a player and say she is attractive or he is attractive, therefore they play on the big court. But if a player is deemed to be popular, for whatever reason, they are more likely to be on one of the bigger courts.” (ANI)

Saina Nehwal makes a triumphant return home

Hyderabad, June 28 (ANI): After winning her first ever super series badminton title in Indonesia, Saina Nehwal arrived in Hyderabad, her home city on Saturday.

Ranked number eight in the world, Nehwal won her first super series event in Indonesia on June 21, raising India’s hopes of a strong performance at the World Championships to be staged here in August.

Nehwal who is the world junior champion beat China’s Lin Wang 12-21 21-18 21-9, having lost to world number three at the Singapore Super Series the previous week.

However, her dream of pocketing back-to-back titles went up in smoke as Chinese qualifier Xin Wang stunned the second-seeded Indian in the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament at Johor Bahru on Friday (June 26).

“I don’t want to compare myself with players who have already won that. So I tried to compare with the Chinese but it is really great, fantastic. Now I think I will be able to win more super series event and I look forward to win some bigger events like All England Championship. (Q. What happened in Malaysia?) I was little bit tired because it was really tough tournament. I played all the top 20 players in the tournament from day one, it was really hectic,” said Nehwal.

Nehwal, 19, became the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic singles quarter-finals in Beijing last year. (ANI)

Jordan to host own polo event after last year’s ‘too chavvy’ snub

London, June 21 (ANI): Jordan is drawing plans to host her own polo tournament after she was reportedly banned from attending the highlight of the polo season last year for being “too chavvy”.

The glamour model spit fire over the “pure snobbery” of the organisers of the Cartier International last year after they reportedly told her manager that she was “not the sort of person they wanted” at the Guards Polo Club.

The keen horsewoman, who hopes to clinch Olympic gold by competing for in both the dressage and show jumping, said she was looking to break the fixed “elite” image of the sport.

“I would really like to shatter the image of polo as an elitist sport,” The Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“It does take an enormous amount of skill and courage to ride a polo pony in a competitive match, but it should be open to everyone to enjoy a great day like this, as well as raise a lot of money for charity,” she added.

The 31-year-old, who is presently locked in a bitter divorce battle with estranged hubby Peter Andre, will be the patron of the Duke of Essex Polo Trophy. (ANI)

Beijing Olympics generated China a profit of 146 million dollars

Beijing, June 20 (ANI): The Chinese Government has declared that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games generated a profit of more than one billion yuan (146 million dollars).

According to the National Audit Office (NAO) website, the total operating cost of the Games was 19.343 billion yuan and the operating revenue was 20.5 billion yuan.

China also spent 19.49 billion yuan on building 102 Olympic projects in Beijing and the five other cities that co-hosted the Games, the report said.

Thirty-six spots were competition venues and the rest were used for training.

The operating revenue came mainly from broadcasting rights and marketing programs.

The expenses included 5.092 billion yuan on broadcasting, accommodation, transport and medical services; 1.272 billion yuan on the opening and closing ceremonies, torch relay and other promotional activities; and 1.424 billion yuan on human resources.

China plans to use the earnings to set up special funds for the development of sports, improving sports facilities and organizing events for the common man.

“The scheme to set up the funds is under discussion,” China Daily quoted an official, as saying.

The cost of Beijing Games was lower than that of the Athens Games, which cost 2.4 billion dollars, and reportedly made a profit of 155 million dollars.

“According to fixed exchange rates, the cost of the Beijing Games was slightly lower than that of the 2004 Athens Olympics, and as we know the budget for the next Games is more than that for Beijing. So the Beijing Olympics was not the most expensive,” chinanews.com.cn quoted an NAO official as having said.

The website further said: “BOCOG controlled the expenditure, and its revenue was much more than the originally estimated 410 million yuan.” (ANI)

Commonwealth Games Federation satisfied with infrastructure in Delhi

New Delhi, May 20 (ANI): The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Suresh Kalmadi has said that the executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) expressed satisfaction with the games infrastructure coming up in the city.

“As you are all aware the CGF was here for the whole of last week. We went through a lot of preparations for them and we have satisfied them and we took them around to show the entire infrastructure and they liked the games village the best. They said they have not seen a games village like this anywhere,” said Kalmadi.

He also said that there were minor delays in construction of two venues but promised to have all infrastructure ready six months ahead of the event.

Preparations are in full swing in New Delhi for hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games at an estimated cost of 70 billion rupees.

Delhi had bagged the contract after beating the Canadian city Hamilton in the bid for the games.

The Games will be staged in India for the first time and in Asia for the second time. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, held the Commonwealth Games in 1998.

New Delhi hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and again in 1982. (ANI)

Shooting with Spielberg rids Shia La Beouf of stress

Washington, May 18 (ANI): Hollywood actor Shia La Beouf has revealed that he enjoys shooting a few rounds with filmmaker Steven Spielberg to get rid of stress.

LaBeouf says that rifle-range shooting helps him feel recharged, and doesn’t let him be forced to depend on drugs, drink and therapy to unwind.

“If I find I’m sinking, I’ll get out and paint toilet seats or ride dirt bikes or shoot. Firing shotguns really helps me,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

LaBeouf thinks that Steven, who introduced him to guns, is a perfect shooting partner.

“Steven Spielberg takes me when he goes… He’s an Olympic shot. The hand-eye co-ordination of that man is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. If he weren’t a great director, he could be one of our greatest snipers,” he said. (ANI)
