Rooney unlikely to captain Manchester United, says Fergie

London, Sep 12 (ANI): Old Trafford Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said that ace striker Wayne Rooney is unlikely to captain Manchester United.

Rooney has spoken of his desire to be skipper, but Ferguson prefers defenders or midfielders to lead his side.

“It’s difficult for a forward to be captain. Eric Cantona was because he was such an influence to young players, they idolised him,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

“But normally you look at midfielders or defenders. Wayne will always take responsibility, he has a natural desire for that and will always give 100 per cent,” he said. Ferguson insists “we have yet to see the best of Rooney.”

“When players reach 25 they play with authority and bring calmness to their game,” he added. (ANI)

Pakistan to play Australia at Headingly and Lords in 2010

London, Sep.11 (ANI): Pakistan will take on Australia in a two-Test series in England in 2010.

The matches will be played at Headingley and Lord’s.

England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clark said that the selection of the two venues was made keeping the expatriate Pakistani population in mind. He said that England’s first test against Bangladesh would be shifted to Old Trafford. (ANI)

Abandoned by children, inmates of an old-age perform ‘Shraadh’ in Bhopal

Bhopal, Sep.10 (ANI): Abandoned by their own children, many elderly people at an old-age home in Bhopal, performed ‘Shraadh’ for themselves during the ongoing ‘Pitrapaksha’.

As per Hindu tradition, one’s children or family members perform the Shraadh, the ritual of remembering the deceased.

These elderly inmates took the unusual step, as they realised there was no one in their families to perform this ritual.

“They (children) will not do the salvation ritual for us after our death. We are doing it for ourselves. If today they are treating us in this manner, we don’t know what they will do after our death. What can we say?… There is no one to see us. There is no one to listen to our plight… We will die like this here one day,” said Murari Lal Saxena, inmate of Anand Dham old-age-home.

By performing their own ‘shraadh’ rituals, the elderly said they were preparing for their next life.

Parmanad Agrawal, whose family members have died, said in this age and time he couldn’t trust his relatives to do ‘Shraadh’ for him.

“I’m doing my own salvation ritual. So that I don’t suffer in my next life,” said Parmanad Agrawal, an inmate of Anand Dham, the old age home.

Meanwhile, the in-charge of the old-age home Madhuri Mishra said that the inmates did the rituals out of a sense of compulsion.

“All elderly members were worried and in a sad mood. They said since their children have left them in an old age home then why not do their own post-death ritual even if they were still alive. This will leave no burden on their sons after their death. The elderly performed the rituals in the early morning,” said Madhuri Mishra, In-charge, Anand Dham Old-Age-Home.

Hindus believe in reincarnation, or in the cycle of birth. They believe that the body changes with every birth but the soul remains the same.

According to the Hindu philosophy, this birth and death cycle can be broken and the soul can be liberated by performing “Pind Daan” (rituals for dead).

During ‘Pitrapaksha’, children perform the ceremony and pray that the souls of their ancestors should rest in peace. By Ram Chand Sahu(ANI)

White supremacist who planned to bomb Asians and blacks in Britain jailed indefinitely

London, Sep. 9 (ANI): A white supremacist was given an indefinite jail term by a British court after being found guilty of planning a bomb attack on Asians and blacks.

Pro-Nazi Neil Lewington, 43, was branded as “a dangerous man who exhibits emotional coldness and detachment”, The Sun reports.

Racist fanatic Lewington will have to serve a minimum of six years before even being considered for release.

Judge Peter Thornton said: “I accept that in ordinary language, you are an oddball – eccentric, dysfunctional and sometimes immature. But I do not accept you are no more than a pest. My assessment is that you are a dangerous man.”

Lewington was on the verge of launching a bomb blitz on those he considered “non-Britons” when he was arrested by chance for being drunk on a railway station.

Cops found two homemade firebombs in the jobless electrician’s bag.

And when they searched the home he shared with his parents in Reading, Berks, they discovered a bomb factory in his bedroom and plans to make shrapnel grenades from tennis balls and nuts.

They also found a notebook entitled “Waffen SS UK members’ handbook”.

Lewington wrote a chapter in it headed “Targeting or attacking Pakis.”

Lewington’s bedroom contained fascist propaganda including videos of Right-wing terrorists such as London nail bomber David Copeland and Oklahoma fiend Timothy McVeigh.

He was found guilty of five terrorism and two explosives charges at an earlier Old Bailey trial.

His parents, who were present in court, revealed that he had not spoken to his father for a decade. (ANI)

PM concerned over low conviction rate of cases under SC/ST Act

New Delhi, Sep.7 (ANI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday expressed concern over low conviction rate of persons involved in carrying out atrocities against schedule castes and schedule tribes.

Speaking during inauguration of a conference of state ministers of welfare and social justice at New Delhi on Monday, Prime Minister Dr. Singh said: “Reports of atrocities against SCs, STs and senior citizens continue to appear with disturbing regularity. I have in fact written to the Chief Ministers of all states recently to enforce the provisions of the SCs and STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. It is shocking that conviction rate for cases of atrocities against SCs and STs is less than 30 percent against the average of 42 per cent for all cognisable offences under IPC.”

“The state governments need to give more attention to this issue,” the PM said.

Singh told them to conduct meetings of state and district level vigilance committees on a regular basis and said that court cases should be pursued on priority.

Focussing on the need to change the general mindset towards disadvantaged groups, the Prime Minister said such people should be made equal partners in the developmental processes.

“We propose to amend the Persons with Disabilities Act in consultation with states so as to bring it in line with the UN Convention (on Rights of Persons with Disabilities),” Dr. Singh said.

Referring to the drought like situation prevailing in many parts of the country, Singh said, “the experience has been that weaker sections tend to be the worst affected by such natural calamities.

“We, therefore, need to step up monitoring and implementation of welfare schemes like NREGA, Annapurna and Old Age Pension Scheme, which target the weaker sections.” (ANI)

Peter Andre laughs off Jordan’s ‘Mysterious Girl’ claims

London, Sept 7 (ANI): Aussie singer Peter Andre has laughed off reports that he has a new girl in his life, insisting that he feels like a virgin.

The 36-year-old singer’s statement came after his estranged wife Kate Price, a.k.a. Jordan, went on TV to suggest that he had a new Mysterious Girl.

He even compared himself to the hero of the hit comedy ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’.

“OK 36 and not a V but feel like one at mo. Lol,” the Daily Star quoted him as having written on his Twitter page.

Meanwhile, Jordan has reportedly told son Harvey to call her boyfriend Alex Reid ‘Daddy’, a news which has upset Andre.

Rooney confident of handling intense pressure

London, Sep 4(ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed confidence about handling the intense pressure at Manchester United as well as handling responsibilities of the national squad.

At the club level, after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, his responsibility at Old Trafford has doubled, while hopes and aspirations of the nation are on him to lead England to World Cup success.

“I started playing when I was 16 and there has always been expectation and pressure. I have no problem with that. I see it as a challenge,” the Daily Express quoted Rooney, as saying.

“I hope I can be the main man. I am probably playing the best football I have played for England, certainly over the last year. I am really enjoying myself with Manchester United,” he added.

The 23-year-old also said that Man U reckons Cristiano and Tevez’s exit as a big challenge to retain the league title and, personally it is a better opportunity for him to score more goals.

“I want to score more goals. I should be scoring more goals,” Rooney said.

Rooney further said that the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, will definitely be the biggest challenge in his career. (ANI)

Man U’s anti-football tactics hurting the game: Wenger

London, Aug 31 (ANI): Manchester United has been accused of employing “anti-football” tactics during their 2-1 victory at Old Trafford by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who has reopened the hostilities between the two clubs in the new season.

Wenger is to receive an official apology for being banished from the dugout but he remains incensed by the standard of refereeing and his conviction that Sir Alex Ferguson’s players, predominantly Darren Fletcher, were guilty of systematic fouling.

The Old Trafford match in which Arsenal had six players booked, triggered an automatic 25,000 pounds fine from the Football Association, The Guardian reported.

The conduct of Arsenal players was also brought into question by Emmanuel Eboué being shown a yellow card for diving, a day after Eduardo da Silva had been charged by UEFA for “deceiving the referee” for a similar offence.

“There are other points than diving that, for me, are more urgent players who play only to make fouls and who are never punished; players who make repeated fouls and who get out of the game without a yellow card. That, for me, is more anti-football than a player who did what Eduardo did.”

Wenger also accused Ferguson’s players of using similar tactics in the past, most notably saying his team had been kicked off the pitch at Old Trafford during the 2004-05 season. (ANI)

Wenger to get Man U dug out sending off apology

London, Aug 31 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will receive an apology today from referees chief Keith Hackett over his dismissal during the Gunners’ 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

The Arsenal boss was forced to stand among Manchester United fans for the final 30 seconds after fourth official Lee Probert complained that he had kicked a water bottle.

Wenger was sent to the stands by referee Mike Dean in the dying moments of Saturday’s match at Old Trafford. Probert moaned to referee Mike Dean and he sent Wenger off to the delight of 75,000 United supporters.

League Managers Association chief Richard Bevan has been told by Hackett that Wenger will receive an apology.

Referees’ chief Keith Hackett admitted last night that Dean and Probert had goofed outrageously and promised furious League Managers’ Association chief Richard Bevan an apology was on its way.

“Although correct in law, it was completely out of context in the game and it was followed by the nonsense over where Wenger should sit,” The Sun quoted Bevan, as saying.

“I’ve spoken to Keith Hackett and he fully recognises the situation was an error and an apology will follow to Wenger. Lee Probert totally failed to manage the situation,” he added.enger, angry after Robin van Persie’s late effort was ruled offside, said: “It was weird, spectacular. London, Aug. 29 (ANI): Left back Manchester United Patrice Evra had thought Arsenal had taken out a contract out on him the last time he played them.

The left-back was the target for revenge in May after Manchester United swept aside the Gunners in the Champions League semi-finals.

Evra and Co put on a show to record an impressive 3-1 second-leg victory – 4-1 on aggregate – at The Emirates.

That prompted the Frenchman to suggest the Euro tie had been “men against boys”.

And that remark was still fresh in the memory when the two rivals met in a goalless draw in the league at Old Trafford just 11 days later.

Evra claims the challenges were so bad even referee Mike Dean warned him to be on his guard as it appeared Arsenal were targeting the United defender.

Now Evra is ready to face the Gunners again this evening.

And, according to The Sun, he said: “What Arsenal did that day was shameful. I was asked if it felt like there was a contract out on me and I had to say ‘yes, yes, yes’.”

Evra explained: “I particularly didn’t like the reaction Fabregas showed in that game when he knew full well we had a Champions League final to play that month. Yet he put in a bad tackle on me which could easily have robbed me of that final.”

“We’ll meet again one day, hopefully off the pitch, and I’ll be able to let my personality tell him what I think,” he said. (ANI)

Vidic vows to prove his commitment to Man U

London, Aug 25 (ANI): Star defender Nemanja Vidic has vowed that he will prove his commitment to Manchester United with his performances in the coming weeks.

Vidic’s advisor Paolo Fabbri was quoted last week as saying that the centre-back would welcome a switch to Barcelona.

It set alarm bells ringing at Old Trafford, as Vidic has become one of Europe’s top defenders since joining three years ago. His wife was also reported as being unhappy in Manchester.

But Vidic insists he is focused only on United’s title defence and Fabbri denied making the comments.

“I’ve never said anything about Barcelona, or Real Madrid or AC Milan – or any club. I never speak about my future so I don’t know why someone else does. I showed at Wigan on the pitch how happy I am at this club. Any fan of United only has to see how I played to know how committed I am,” The Sun quoted Vidic, as saying.

The 5-0 win at Wigan on Saturday was Vidic’s first game back after an ankle injury.

He spoke to Fabbri about the story to voice his concern at the timing of it, after United lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

“I don’t want it to have an impact. I’m here and committed. I’ll show that with how I play. It’s not true that my wife is not happy. I don’t know how that rumour came out; she’s not what you’d call a famous wife. She’s never spoken to a newspaper,” he added. (ANI)

Koran-bashing author warned of ‘severe consequences’ by British Muslim community

London, Aug. 25 (ANI): An Islamic leader in Britain has warned best selling author Sebastian Faulks of ‘severe consequences’ for his remarks that Koran is nothing more than “the rantings of a schizophrenic.”

The Sun quoted Ajmal Masroor, of the Islamic Society for Britain, as saying that Faulks’ comments could encourage hatred against Muslims.

“The consequences of saying things like this could be quite severe.”

Faulks, 56, had said that the words of Prophet Mohammed were “one-dimensional”, and had criticised the Koran for not telling stories, like the Old Testament.

The author, whose works include James Bond novel Devil May Care, read a translation of the Koran while researching his latest book, A Week In December.

“It’s a depressing book, it really is. It’s just the rantings of a schizophrenic,” he said while speaking in advance of the publication of his novel, ‘A Week in December.’

He also found Koran “very disappointing from a literary point of view”. (ANI)

New X-ray technique reveals buried image in N. C. Wyeth’s painting

Washington, August 20 (ANI): A new X-ray imaging technique has for the first time in a century revealed unprecedented details of a painting hidden beneath another painting by famed American illustrator Newell Convers Wyeth, who is regarded as the greatest American illustrator of the 20th century.

While making a presentation at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) on Wednesday, Dr. Jennifer Mass said that the non-destructive look-beneath-the-surface method could reveal hidden images in hundreds of Old Master paintings, and other prized works of art.

In the study paper, the researcher noted that many great artists re-used canvases or covered paintings with other paintings, in order to save money on materials or to let the colours and shapes of a prior composition influence the next one.

Art historians believe that several of Wyeth’s most valued illustrations have been lost from view in that way, and one of them, depicting a dramatic fist fight, was published in a 1919 Everybody’s Magazine article titled ‘The Mildest Mannered Man’.

X-ray techniques previously used by other scientists suggested that Wyeth had covered the fight scene with another painting called ‘Family Portrait’, but they had not shown the the true image except in black and white reproductions.

The new instrument, called a confocal X-ray fluorescence microscope, was developed at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) national X-ray facility.

The instrument reveals minute details in hidden paintings without removing paint samples. It shoots X-ray beams into a painting and then collects fluorescent X-ray “signals” given off by the chemicals in the various paint layers.

Scientists can link each signal to specific paint pigments.

In addition to revealing the original image, the method is providing new information on Wyeth’s materials and methods.

The same technique may ultimately reveal hidden images in paintings by other famed artists, the researchers say. (ANI)

Archaeologists discover world’s oldest tree sign in Prague

Prague (Czech Republic), August 13 (ANI): Archaeologists have uncovered a unique 1000-year-old mark engraved into an oak tree near Celakovice in Prague, Czech Republic, which is probably the oldest preserved sign of this kind in the world.

According to a report in the Prague Monitor, the real meaning of the 10-cm star-shaped mark on the oak trunk is not certain. Experts say it may have marked the territory or serve some iconic purposes.

This find is rare as so old engraved signs were not previously mapped and they are not systematically searched for either, said archaeologist Jana Marikova from the Academy of Sciences (AV)’s Archaeological Institute.

Geologist Radek Mikulas, from the AV’s Geological Institute, found the engraved sign by accident when he was searching for the actual age and state of the old oak trunks that were lifted near Celakovice during sand and gravel strip mining.

The mark was engraved into the trunk after the bark was removed from the spot, and this is why its traces were preserved.

Experts estimate that the oaks were standing near the Labe (Elbe) River between 600-800 A.D. and the engraved symbol must originate from the early Middle Ages.

Archaeologist Dagmar Dreslerova points out that the tradition of engraving signs and ornaments date back to the Palaeolithic Era (Old Stone Age).

However, only engravings made on stone, rocks and exceptionally on bones have been preserved, as wood and other organic material decompose with time.

The first written sources mentioning signs engraved into trees to mark land borders and paths come from antiquity. (ANI)

Ferguson backing Rooney to lead in post-Ronaldo era

London, Aug 8(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is backing striker Wayne Rooney to lead the Red Devils from the front in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo world, starting against Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Ferguson would bring Rooney from his selfless left-sided duties to fill the gap left by Ronaldo, who transferred to Real Madrid in an 80 million pound deal.

“Wayne is a totally different type of player to Ronaldo. I don’t think the responsibility of getting more goals will affect Wayne at all. He’s got the mental strength. He’s proved that time and time again” The Telegraph quoted Ferguson, as saying.

“He will be used as a central striker this season. He goes on these bursts of goals, but if he can do that more consistently over the season he will get to 25 and above,” he added.

The 67 year-old further said that Rooney was an exceptional player and it would be difficult for any player to fill his shoes at the Old Trafford, but believes that if a player has determination, nothing would be impossible.

“Any player, whether Wayne Rooney, Macheda, Welbeck, Nani, all the forwards, all have to say ‘well, this guy was exceptional,” said Ferguson, adding that only the most dedicated can follow in such productive footsteps by having the desire to improve themselves in every training session. (ANI)

Robinho says Tevez will have no regrets about joining Man City

London, July 16 (ANI): Brazilian football star Robinho has promised his Argentine counterpart Carlos Tevez that he will not regret snubbing Chelsea to join Manchester City.

The Brazilian forward, 25, is ideally placed to pass comment as he was pursued by the two clubs back in August last year before opting for Eastlands.

Tevez has been faced with a similar dilemma since deciding to quit Manchester United.

The former Old Trafford hero opted for City despite being courted by Chelsea and Robinho maintains he will soon realise it is the right choice.

He said: “What I can say to Carlos is that I had to make the same choice last season. And I don’t regret choosing City. I have not done since the moment I signed.

“We all feel like a big family at City and that’s another point that I would mention to him,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Robinho is also praying his close pal Elano will also stay. The midfielder is set for crunch talks with manager Mark Hughes in the next few days after helping Brazil win the Confederations Cup. (ANI)

Several Taliban insurgents killed as PAF pound Mehsud’s stronghold in South Waziristan

Islamabad, July 13 (ANI): The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) continued to pound suspected Taliban hideouts in South Waziristan killing scores of militants.

According to sources, fighter jets bombarded terror training centers and other suspected installations of the Taliban in Maulvi Khan Serai, Old Serwekai and Berwand areas considered to be Baitullah Mehsud’s stronghold.

Residents said at least eight extremists were killed in an attack on a training centre in Maulvi Khan Serai on Sunday.

It is believed that the sudden surge in air strikes is primarily aimed at dismantling the Taliban before the launch of a full scale military offensive in the region.

Meanwhile, security forces have reportedly started moving further inwards in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Troops backed by tanks were seen heading towards some areas in Bannu district and the adjacent Frontier Region where an operation had been carried out recently, The Dawn reports.

In yet another significant move, pro-government militant commander Turkistan Bhittani pulled his army out of the Tank city and has reportedly moved towards Jandola.

“Tank was practically controlled by Bhittani till Saturday. His people conducted raids in the city and outskirts in search of Baitullah’s people.

Soon after the arrival of army in Tank on Saturday, Bhittani’s people disappeared,” residents said, adding: “Baitullah’s men have either left Tank or gone underground.”

A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) claimed that security forces killed one insurgent and arrested 16 others in raids carried out on Saturday and Sunday. (ANI)

Sprint king Bolt gives Ronaldo tips on how to stay on his feet

London, July 8 (ANI): Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been given tips on how to stay on his feet by sprint king Usain Bolt.

The fastest man in the world struck up a friendship with Ronaldo after meeting the former Manchester United star at the club’s training ground in May.

According to The Sun, Bolt, a Red Devils fan, has been giving running advice to the world’s most expensive footballer.

Bolt said: “I explained that when he catches top speed he starts tipping over because he has a lot of back lift. So I said he has to run with his knees in front of him, then when he hits top speed he won’t topple over as he’ll continue at the same pace.”

Bolt admits he was disappointed to see Ronaldo quit Old Trafford for La Liga.

But he insists Michael Owen can spearhead the club’s pursuit of a record-breaking 19th league title next season. (ANI)

Remains of 11th Century dog found during archaeological dig in England

London, July 8 (ANI): An archaeological dig at the heart of Cambridge University, UK, has revealed Roman pottery, medieval remains and 11th Century dog bones.

According to a report by BBC News, the dig has been taking place beneath a tearoom in the university’s central offices, known as the Old Schools.

It was one of the events marking the 800th anniversary of the university.

Some material pre-dates its foundation in 1209 by over 150 years, and is said to be the first evidence the area was occupied by an Anglo-Saxon community.

Archaeologists have unearthed several animal bones, boundary markings and signs of quarrying, which a spokesman said suggested that in the final decades of the Saxon era, the foundations of Cambridge were being laid.

“The site has enabled us to prove what we previously had no proof for – that by the time of the Norman Conquest there was a thriving settlement in the middle of Cambridge,” said Richard Newman of the Cambridge Archaeological Unit.

The dig has reached what would have been ground level in ancient times, even before the Saxons arrived.

“In Anglo-Saxon times, a cluster of domestic properties began to emerge, and the dog, which appears to date back to that period, would have been a valuable ally for the family that owned it,” said Newman.

“It would have been a working animal,” he added.

“A dog would also have given people security, it was useful when it came to protecting your possessions and it was cheaper than a lock,” he explained. (ANI)

Tevez refuses to believe he has betrayed Man U

London, July 6 (ANI): Former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez is confident he will not be viewed as a traitor by the Old Trafford faithful if he completes a transfer to Manchester City.

According to The Sun, the Argentina star rejected a permanent Manchester United deal last month. He has since been linked with a lucrative move to wealthy Manchester City.helsea are also reportedly tracking the 25-year-old’s availability, but Eastlands is believed to be Tevez’s likely destination this summer.
