One body found at charred Thai mall – agency

The body of a 24-year-old man was found on Friday at a shopping mall set on fire during riots in Bangkok, medical rescue workers said, denying earlier reports that nine bodies were retrieved.

An official at the Ruamkatanyu Foundation told Reuters only one body had been retrieved so far at Central World mall and it had stopped the search for the day.

A worker at another volunteer agency, the Poh Teck Tung foundation, also said only one body was found.

Bangkok’s state emergency centre had said it was looking into a report that nine bodies were found at Central World after the military dispersed protesters from their camp in the area in a crackdown on Wednesday that killed 15 and wounded nearly 100.

The Erawan Emergency Medical Centre said a total of 53 people had died and 413 were wounded in the latest wave of violence that began on May 14.

Famed Chinese general’s 1800-yr-old tomb found

New Delhi, May 19 (ANI): Archaeologists in central China”s Henan Province claim to have disinterred a tomb of Cao Xiu, a prominent general from the Three Kingdoms period (220 AD-280 AD), and a bronze seal found at the site that bore his name on it, confirmed that it was indeed his tomb.

The tomb, 50 meters long and 21 meters wide, held chinaware, copperware, liquor cups, and jars as well as some human bones, said Sun Yingmin, spokesman of the Henan provincial cultural heritage bureau, at a press conference Monday, the China Daily reports.

Tests suggested the bones belonged to a 50-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, he said.

Chinese history books describe Xiu as a fearless warrior of a high rank, and that Cao Cao, a king from the Three Kingdoms period took him as his own son, the China Daily reports.

Last year, Chinese archaeologists had unearthed Cao Cao’s tomb, and now they have found that the newly discovered Xiu tomb had similar architecture as Cao Cao’s.

However, last year’s sensational Cao Cao tomb discovery had been written off by some experts as a hoax. (ANI)

Self-perceived age of older Chinese consumers younger than actual age

Washington, May 19 (ANI): Older Chinese consumers perceive themselves younger than their actual age, an expert has found.

He also found that these perceptions affect marketing strategies aimed at these consumers.

Rui Yao, a University of Missouri assistant professor, recognized a trend wherein the average age of Chinese citizens has begun to get older quickly ever since the government enacted the one-child policy in 1978 as a form of population control.

“Someone who is 50 doesn’t think they are 50,” Yao said. “They see themselves as 45 or 40 years old.”

A survey of Chinese consumers above the age 50, was conducted across six cities in China. While almost 50 percent of the people surveyed were between the ages of 50 and 59, only about 33 percent perceived themselves as being that old. Overall, 52 percent of the total respondents perceived themselves to be younger than their actual age, among whom, about 20 percent perceived themselves to be at least 10 years younger and 6 percent had a self-perceived age that was at least 20 years younger than their life age.

“This study shows that when marketing products to this demographic, it is wise to avoid saying they are for older people,” Yao said. “Having a gray hair image, or using the term ‘silver’ isn’t going to be very well received by these consumers. Marketing professionals who hold the old belief that ‘the old man decays’ are challenged to re-evaluate and reposition the older consumer market. People live longer today. The ‘mid-life’ and ‘middle-age’ concepts are shifting. They used to describe those in their 30s and now it appears that the 50s may be the new 30s. Marketers should use more energetic and youthful campaigns. If a product makes them feel younger, they will be more likely to use it.”

Another interesting result was that women were more likely to perceive themselves as younger as compared to men.

Yao’s research included factors like financial risk tolerance, savings behavior and motives, retirement, debt management, and household consumption patterns.

This study was published in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues. (ANI)

N’Zogbia held over alleged driving test scam

Wigan Athletic’s French midfielder Charles N’Zogbia has been arrested over suspicion that he arranged for someone else to take part of his driving test for him, police said on Thursday.

N’Zogbia, who scored a last-minute winner for Wigan in their 3-2 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, was held by officers on Wednesday at a test centre in Greater Manchester, northern England.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said the player had been “badly advised”.

Newspapers said staff from the centre had become suspicious about a man who turned up to take the theory part of the driving test some weeks ago.

They reported that 23-year-old N’Zogbia was arrested as he was about to get into a car with an examiner for the practical test.

“At about 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, police working alongside the Driving Standards Agency arrested a 23-year-old man at Sale driving test centre on suspicion of fraud by false representation,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

The player has been released on police bail until June 3.

“The way I see the whole situation is that Charles has been badly advised, and he’s made a naive mistake,” Martinez told a reporters.

“We’re going to look into every single detail before I give my full side of the story but what is important is Charles has reacted in a very mature way.

“We’ll collaborate with the police and with Charles to make sure we get out of this situation in a positive way.”
